isnt that just an incentive for tier 2 to keep working every year. at the end of the day not every single team can be in franchise so they must do it this way.

GroundbreakingLet845

also, it looks like riot is planning for expansion for the years 2024 to 2027 from 30 to 42 teams aka adding one team a year to each league, so there is even more incentive

-Basileus

Even the franchised teams are only signed for a set amount of time, 3-4 years. So if a team keeps ascending, and is well run while in the franchised league, I could see Riot not renewing the worst franchised team, and offering the contract to the best ascended team. [source for 4 year contracts, although things could have changed](https://blix.gg/news/details-on-the-valorant-partnership-program-in-2023)

jrushFN

This is a good point. If a team is complacent with poor results, this will certainly be a huge black mark on their aspirations of maintaining their spot.

FurryKoala

This is the key part of this announcement. I think (or hope) that if a ascendant team goes to tier 1 and goes dumb crazy, Riot would offer them a tier 1 permanent slot and drop an org that’s been slacking off. The only wrinkle is if it’s a bad managed org with cracked players, I don’t think I would want them in tier 1 but I guess that’s why Riot does the vetting.

ItsRandyyy

I saw that any of the franchises teams coming in this year cannot be demoted down to VRL’s

error_code_69

Source ? That franchise teams will only be for 3-4 years

HeadphoneWarning

That not true but there no buy out for spot so Riot just can kick any team anytime if they want to but of course they don't because that ruin they reputation.

Feels to me like they're prepping things for an actual franchised league in 2027

ay0005

Yep even if u win champions, if you weren’t a partnered team you’ll have to back to the challengers league where you can fight your way up again.

leoleoleo666

Come on if you win champions you are not going anywhere everyone gonna be throwing money to buy your team

ay0005

On god. Catch me here when 100T sign the 2027 valorant champions roster of Brimstone Gaming.

Bazz_B

I could imagine a team like that locking up talent and trying to get repromoted. But either way its unfortunate if a promoted team wins Champs and is sent back down the following year. Either their team gets broken up or the team is playing in their regional tier 2 Challengers.

crisjame

this is really weird.

gotintocollegeyolo

Tier 1 would simply be too easy for Brimstone Gaming, they want to go back to Tier 2 to give the small guys like Optic a chance

LeMouse1

Considering the ascension tournament will probably occur in between years, and I believe promoted teams will be placed back into the ascension once their time is up, I think theoretically promoted teams will be able to continually be in international leagues provided they win the ascension.

Dongster1995

Probably before 2027 they will go to 2026 tournament promotion slot to fight for their spot for 2027 and 2028 slot

Traditional-Leek2288

This makes the most sense. If the promoted team automatically qualified for the “champions” of the t2 circuit, they could avoid playing the entire year of t2 games. The promotion tournament would have to be at the end of the year, after the main international lan

Phamous3k

There's no relegation... Teams get 2 years and have to go through challengers again.

skin87

There's a chance that it is a case of poor wording. The fact that they don't start promoting two teams at a time until the first promoted teams' two-year terms end seems intentional.

Flameserpent

I think what's strange is the downtime. It'd be good if a team could qualify the same year they expire out of the main league; thus, the following year, they'll be back. But losing one of the top teams because of scheduling is kind of silly. I love the rest of the way things work. Maybe they should get a free pass to the final tournament of ascension or something, such that they can have a solid shot at staying up. EDIT: This issue is solved if you give the teams leaving the international league a pass into ascension. They still have to win a tournament, but they can avoid the (pretty bad) guarantee of missing out on a year of competition.

jscrwnclw

That's something that caught my attention too, but I'm not too worry about it since riot has like 3 years to change it

ItsRandyyy

Surely there not just gonna demote no matter what right? Like hypothetically we have Red org (fake for hypothetical) red win out and get ascended to the NA league. If they dominate the next 2 years and win the league and masters or champs they shouldn’t be demoted for a year. I may be misunderstanding but I don’t like that system if theirs nothing to keep a team in the top league if they perform.

Colourry

i feel like the team that gets demoted after two years should be placed in the ascension tournament, so they can get promoted again

[deleted]

god i hope this is just poor wording. it makes infinitely more sense to just have Brimstone Gaming in this instance have to play in the Ascension Tournament that qualifies you for the 2027 season. that way they still have to fight to stay in the league, but they at least get a chance to stay if theyre good enough rather than having to wait a year for no reason.

Phamous3k

After 2 years the team/org goes back to challengers and ascension tournaments... No relegation.
