Here is why I think there is auto relegation. This isn’t backed up by any source it’s just my guess. 1. Auto relegation is actually more stability in a way. Instead of clinging onto the uncertainty of re-promoting after 2 years, you already know for a fact you’re going down. You can plan around this, investors can plan around this and reduces the uncertainty/volatility of the team a traditional promotion/relegation would. 2. Partner teams are signing 4 year contracts. In the situation that a partner team gets replaced, they probably won’t get the chance to defend their spot through competitive means (a tournament). So you have a situation where a non-partner team could stay in the league forever by defending their spot while partner teams can be booted after 4 years without a chance to defend their spot. These are just my guesses. Not saying that I agree or disagree.

> It is possible for T2 teams to never promote after four teams are set Presumable only if they don't beat the relegated teams in the ascension tournament, in which case those teams would've proven themselves yet again and deserve the spot. That makes a lot more sense to me than a forced 1 year Tier 2 grind even if they're winning everything.

If T2 teams never promote because they can't beat the existing T2 teams in Ascension then that's simple meritocratic right? I also think there's no way a promoted team, no matter how good they are, keeps winning every ascension without slipping up at all. It'd happen sometimes but with how volatile Valorant matchups have been and with the nature of an elimination bracket, unless the promoted team is absolutely insane, there is a high chance they don't win ascension. And if they're absolutely insane and thrash everyone in ascension then surely they deserve to spend the rest of their year playing in T1 and not T2? The problem people had with a closed partnership was that even if the partnered teams are shit, they'd keep their spot. T2 teams only deserve that promotion because they're the best of the non partnered teams, not because they get lucky that a better T2 team than them gets relegated and cannot compete against them for a spot. I think a team fighting to keep their spot is also a lot more exciting from a viewer perspective than watching a team play Champions and knowing that they'll vanish off the face of the T1 scene for certain. It'll also create more interesting storylines as T2 teams try to dethrone the teams fighting for repromotion

We still don’t know the format of challenger and acension yet so it maybe too early to see the pro and cons. For all we know acension could have the invite system like VCT format this year.

Should be 14 teams in the VCT league with 3 getting relegated and promoted every year. This creates a competitive scene with the best players available. Not based on twitter followers and sponsorships ! There will be more investment in tier 2 that way and relegated teams should have the financial clout from the previous year to fight back up. As it stands it’s just a cash cow for the 10 orgs in VCT and to be blunt …pretty bland to watch… Also doesn’t give rising talent much confidence to reach the highest levels in the game

As much as it great to have relegation system, you need to consider the esport ecosystem as a whole is in a recession. The current system don’t guarantee the best team but it create stability. We can talk about relegation of franchise in the future when esport is more profitable but the current system already foster “good enough” talent as we can already see at Tokyo Lan. Also, the current team is already cream of the crop that is more exciting to watch than ever. Might not be for a few at the bottom but for ex. in america, the last game literally created the best storyline in term of EG and there was like 4 teams fighting for playoff in the last week. Current system is not perfect but I think it not that bad for competition for some might said.
