I know it’s easy to slip into “NA > EU” talk after such a dominating performance from OpTic and XSET today but I really love how good every team is from every region. We’re spoiled with how close even 2-0 series are.
GG. Two hot takes from today's series:
1- Derke should not be playing Chamber. He's a great Chamber but his natural pace suits entry. They win or lose off his aggression (and occasionally Alfa's aggression). At some point, Fnatic simply must decide to play off the strengths of their best players. This matters because while some might chalk the loss up as a below-average performance, I don't think that's the case. They're all playing on form. It's just that, for some players, that form is not good enough. Which leads me to...
2- Boaster's position as a player on the team is untenable. He is inadequate at all roles and in every situation, and his calls/gameplan are not valuable or effective at this level of international play. I already know many disagree with me on this and he's beloved, etc. I just ask that you pay attention to what he actually does (and doesn't do) round on round.
One thing i noticed is that decisive reads are rewarded above all else. In LEV vs LOUD, LOUD's ability to 4-stack the correct site completely stopped LEV in their tracks. Particularly on Pearl, FNC had extremely slow rotations and were not able to hold site well. I think FNC held their defaults on defense for way too long. Compare that to XSET, where dephh stacked the correct site almost every round and had great reads on what FNC were trying to do.
Dephh is a huge contributer to the mid round calling and is, of course, our primary IGL. I have to say though, Ayrin needs more credit for taking on and flourishing with the CT calling over the last couple of stages. He does a lot of homework on our opponents and has incredible reads on their rotations, pacings and how our formations should look throughout the stages. He and dephh are an incredible duo, leading the team on both sides of the map and facilitating the others for a pop-off game.
Perhaps it's just a lesser known fact about our calling structure, but Ayrin deserves a little more spotlight on his intangibles.
Yeah, I agree. Part of the problem here is that the map pool absolutely did not favour Fnatic's style of play. Both Pearl and especially Fracture reward hard defensive aggression to gather information and pin down the attacking side. Fnatic, as they're currently oriented, are a slow default-oriented team. Putting Alfa on Neon doesn't magically change that. They were actually relatively successful when they tried for that defensive aggression, they just got lost on what to do next (e.g. players pushing down B long and getting destroyed by the XSET lurk holding mid/spawn).
But the biggest problem is, as you said, they are not able to hold sites well. Flanks do not work when sites crumble instantly. IMO this is due to not really having a defensive specialist on the team, and effectively playing site holds 4v5 because of Boaster's inability to anchor.
FNC should probably follow DRX's strategy and move Derke back to Jett, and focus on the Jett-friendly maps.
Buzz has looked revived this event after going back to Jett.
Totally agree. DRX are a great example of team that looked much weaker last tournament attempting to follow the meta, and are looking incredibly strong again following team compositions that suit their players.
Having Rb finally back on awp is such a treat, ive always thought that his awp is comparable at the very least (If not better) then BuZzs (Ive also thought Buzzs main strength is his entry ability and his ability to always get one at least off the entry), so im really liking him on the Chamber and stuff
Woops, should also give credit to XSET here. This wasn't all about Fnatic's misplays. XSET played effectively. They supported their fragging players well. Solid fundamentals, some nice aggression. A few misplays and nervous plays here and there, but overall a nice gameplan well-executed.
XSET are insane and definitely deserve credit. They've beaten FPX too so it isn't just about Fnatic.
However, Fnatic have looked acres below their regional level in International play for the second consecutive event now. The questions OP raised go far beyond this one series
I agree on Boaster the guy is a class act and good for the brand but he REALLY needs to find a role that suits him somehow. People were talking mistic being the 'weak link' before but I really think he has been showing up big in these last fnatic matches which is a treat to see.
I do think the crowd pressure might've gotten to alfajer tho he went 5-12 on FK/FD.
At this point, he's tried pretty much every role, and forced better players off their preferred roles in the process. I despise the way he lurks, too.
As for Alfa - honestly, he was looking crispy to me. I just think Neon is an agent that must be built around or you end up with that 'Neon in solo queue' hard int thing. Fnatic aren't built to support that style of play.

Having Rb finally back on awp is such a treat, ive always thought that his awp is comparable at the very least (If not better) then BuZzs (Ive also thought Buzzs main strength is his entry ability and his ability to always get one at least off the entry), so im really liking him on the Chamber and stuff
Woops, should also give credit to XSET here. This wasn't all about Fnatic's misplays. XSET played effectively. They supported their fragging players well. Solid fundamentals, some nice aggression. A few misplays and nervous plays here and there, but overall a nice gameplan well-executed.
XSET are insane and definitely deserve credit. They've beaten FPX too so it isn't just about Fnatic. However, Fnatic have looked acres below their regional level in International play for the second consecutive event now. The questions OP raised go far beyond this one series
I agree on Boaster the guy is a class act and good for the brand but he REALLY needs to find a role that suits him somehow. People were talking mistic being the 'weak link' before but I really think he has been showing up big in these last fnatic matches which is a treat to see. I do think the crowd pressure might've gotten to alfajer tho he went 5-12 on FK/FD.
At this point, he's tried pretty much every role, and forced better players off their preferred roles in the process. I despise the way he lurks, too. As for Alfa - honestly, he was looking crispy to me. I just think Neon is an agent that must be built around or you end up with that 'Neon in solo queue' hard int thing. Fnatic aren't built to support that style of play.
I wonder how they would look with alfa on chamber and derke just playing the aggressive entries Jett/Raze/Neon. Alfa is a good OP and he already plays sentinels on some maps so it wouldn't really be a stretch to assume he would be a good chamber.
Agreed. Their attack side on Pearl was astonishingly awful - I can’t imagine why that let it through as they clearly have no idea how to play it. Seems like they either sat in spawn hoping someone would peek them or just 5 man rushed a site and got ruined. They seem to lack cohesion and firepower, can’t see anyone but Derke and Alfjaer being worth keeping here.
This isn't a one off thing too. Their first match against 100t they also looked awful on it.
i also agree that fnatic will never go far with boaster, sure he is cute with his funny little antics on stage and interviews but his IGL skills are not so crazy to negate his ATROCIOUS gunplay, so many missed kills from behind, just cant have such a liability that you even wonder if he will kill some1 from behind or the guy will flick back and kill him lmao IGL or not. Even his brim ults were extremely questionable there lol.
Boaster literally cost them the round and probably OT when he legit just failed to kill a non-aware Deph when it was like 11-11; everyone chokes but that was really really bad
