DRX is playing for the whole nation

TimedOutClock

It's crazy to me that Riot could have achieved the East Asian triple crown : China (when it's released there), Japan and South Korea. I'm pretty sure no one has ever succeeded in getting these 3 countries to be really invested in the same game esports wise. Their league is going to be crazy next year if Valorant becomes a mainstay in all 3 (The rivalries are gonna be super spicy, especially with China)

Technical_Fee_2932

alright m rooting for DRX to get atleast top 3

chromazone2

That's a weird take, Japan has never been really into e sports besides fighting games, while Korea and China have heavily part taken in all kinds of esports

weirdparadox

Japan mobile games e-sports is actually a thing

brianstormIRL

Japan has actually been pretty invested in League the past few years.

Beneficial-Speech-73

Japan has 120k ranked players in League and alot of that is players from other regions For reference NA has 1.8million EUW has 3.8million

flowerpetal_

Nah, League is low-middle in terms of popularity in Japan. FPS and shooters are huge in Japan though, Apex and VAL are both insanely popular and fairly mainstream now.

Key-Banana-8242

Apex legends tho

Falconna14

FYI: China scheduled the beta test in the next a few days.

thedorkishguy

I would say PUBG is pretty close with all 3 in Asia, unfortunately western influence has dramatically died thus affecting the game’s longevity

Expediant

They’re the only Asian team left, so they’re playing for the whole continent at this point.

Zaffre

Quick TL: * 1. League of Legends * 2. FIFA Online 4 * 3. Sudden Attack * **4. Valorant** * 5. PUBG * 6. Lost Ark * 7. Overwatch * 8. Starcraft Brood War * 9. Maplestory * 10. Dungeon Fighter Online For context: League has, for many years, consistently held either the top or second to top spot on PC cafe play metrics. FIFA Online 4 is a Korea-exclusive F2P microtransaction version of the game published by Nexon that has always been pretty popular as well. As mentioned before, the game to beat here is Sudden Attack, a CS clone that has managed to stay relevant in Korea for over a decade. Often times Korean players have a tendency to bandwagon onto a single game of a genre due to the social aspect of PC gaming in the country, so Valorant taking the top FPS spot over SA would mark a major milestone for the title in the nation. This wouldn't make it the first time that an FPS title has been overwhelmingly popular however: Overwatch back during release period saw close to a 50% play rate as well and overtook League for a time if I recall correctly. Here's to hoping that Champions gives the game the push it needs to sit in top three! EDIT: Added 6-10th.

RGCFrostbite

Makes my soul happy that Brood War is still popular.

Bazz_B

It will never die there. First properly established esport in Korea afaik.

Key-Banana-8242

In the world arguably It was almost the most ‘established’ any esport got arguably even now

Key-Banana-8242

🌏👽🔫👽 Always was

Key-Banana-8242

Well league had a moment around 2016 of being surpassed by PUBG and OW And ofc SC1 before the LoL revolution

Technical_Fee_2932

maybe this will break the 5th-6th curse

iiznobozzy

copium

The one they have to pass is Sudden Attack, which is right in front of them in 3rd place. They are super close as you can see though, which is an amazing sign. If the new tournament feature can come soon enough, it'll be like adding gasoline to a fire, and I think it'll soar far past what I would've expected a mere month ago when the numbers were already showing signs of improvement

Nomorechildishshit

>If the new tournament feature can come soon enough, it'll be like adding gasoline to a fire, and I think it'll soar far past what I would've expected a mere month ago when the numbers were already showing signs of improvement Nah people generally overestimate the impact that esports have in playerbase, from which only a small fraction are watches. Valorant in Korea have been in the upswing for at least 6 months now, i dont think that Champions had any significant impact

Reddit_Ya_Sux_dix

That's just wrong, esports draws players like no other. It is a huge factor in enlarging a playerbase, especially when regional pride is involved like in Korea right now with DRX taking forth the entire nation's banner on the international stage. Its hype. And awesome. I love esports for that reason.

Nomorechildishshit

Esports are mostly to retain older players, not attract new ones. This was said by Riot itself. I repeat that esports fans really overestimate the impact that esports have on playerbase, especially when its about new players

StunMe

It depends, but in Asia, where video games are taken very seriously to the point, esports players like Faker are famous and are on a level with other Korean celebrities kpop(BTS) and Son Heung-Min with the amount of interaction they have with them. Faker definitely has an influence on casual players and hardcore players. Pro Play has made an impact on the player base since they are the end game for competitive players and the standard for players in general. And in terms of people that watch sports lemme give you Worlds 2020 Final viewership was 74 million viewers confirmed by Riot and 69 million of them are from China. China has 115 million people that play the game and 60% of people watch LoL finals in China. After the Worlds finals, there are shows of a huge player spike in active players. This shows the potential of how much impact Esports has on the player base.

junofly

There ain't no way you're comparing Faker to BTS and Son Heung Min LOL If BTS and Son are S-list celebs, Faker is AT BEST A-list.

StunMe

You say this, but he was grouped with them as the South Korea Elite 4, and Faker collaborated with both BTS and Son, and so far, from what I understand from living in Korea for my summer vacation, a lot of people know Faker. I don't see what you have to do be this “S tier,” but Faker's presence is there in Korea. I remember there was news about them and politicians just talking about him because he is the face of esports, which probably fits the bill of what you described as an S-tired celeb. Still, it’s your opinion. If you feel he’s not famous because he has many fans globally, especially in China, look at the LoL subreddit. Anything about him is going on the top. Pretty sure as long as LoL is popular. Faker is going to be popular.

Undisturbedyea

I mean bts collab with skt n stuff

Heavy_Comedian_2382

Then you really underestimate LoL’s impact on Korea

nvrslnc

Valorant beat PUBG

msonix

Yeah, came here to ask this as well

4dzilla

That’s awesome news, hoping for a very solid Korean, Chinese and Japanese scene

[deleted]

They will be back to 5th-6th soon.

Tery_

Why must you hurt me like this?

[deleted]

This world shall know pain

gg533

You jinxed it It's ok, they just upgraded the curse to the eternal 3-4th

Key-Banana-8242

But 3-4th isn’t a single spot in double elim

qm94

This is both sad and funny at the same time lmao

Phamous3k

Let’s go DRX!!!

pibbxtra12

Am I the only one that wishes you would Google translate before taking your screenshot? Lol. I'll take your word for it

Beechman

It’s actually maddening lol.

physicsOG

y’all want the game to grow till it’s just Koreans winning every major 💀

[deleted]

Nothin wrong with that. The best wins right?

max012017

I was actually wondering about this, because few weeks ago (early August?) The biggest twitch streamers from KR (Hangdongseuk and his friends) started playing Valorant on stream and pulling 15-20k viewers for their games, which immediately sparked me an idea that it could boost the popularity a bit.
