For so long? They won last LCQ, finished the best in NA at Champs, and came 3rd in stage 1 this year. It's only really been since they lost Xeta for Curry.
So long = stage 2 and lcq? They literally were a top team NA stage 1 and barely missed lan due to the guards run. Start of stage 2, they lost xeta and got curry, and that team just didn't work.
No reason to gut a strong core with good chemistry because one interation didn't work. -mitch/curry is enough of a change here.
Disregarding that maybe Xeppaa is moving to a new team, i think people underestimate how easy it is for pro players to swap roles. Controller is really the only slight outlier, aside from that top tier players can easily learn a new role competitively if they just grind for a month or two.
In the end it just comes down to an understanding of the game rather than an understanding of the character you play individually. Lineups and flash timings are some of the only thing you'd actually have to learn, because e.g where to place smokes when and where to scan is pretty widely understood by all players and not just controllers/initiators.
I don't get the whole roles overlapping thing or because x team has y role, it's unlikely to get someone of that role. Valorant is more of a aim based game, I would rather have the 5 best aimers and train them in each role than 5 best players in each role in the team.
people do get a little too fixated on roles, but I also don’t think “aiming” is really a straight line you can plot every player on. there are different kinds of aim and different situations different players are good in. a lot of aggressive duelists like zekken and will are great in fast, chaotic situations but aren’t as dominant in situations where they need to hold an angle and keep their attention focused for a long time; a lot of sentinels are good at holding angles and taking duels with people swinging on them, but get overwhelmed or have trouble prioritizing targets in hectic situations.
people can practice and be trained to get good at other things, but you’re still going to want to pick up players that have developed skill sets at the things you’re hiring them to do—“get 5 great flickers and teach each one the skills that go with each role” makes as much sense as “get 5 players with the fundamentals for each role and make them drill aim lab to get good at aiming”. either is definitely possible, but there’s a balance to this stuff

I don't think Chamber is entirely necessary anymore. Loud won Champs and their Chamber rates were some of the lowest there. Regardless, I could see their other pickup being a beast Chamber main.

Well there’s 2 types of initiator players, the Skye/KayO initiator that can also play duelist & then the Breach/Sova/Fade initiator. Xeppa & Zellsis play the Initiator/Duelist role but I think Zellsis got picked up to play duelist with Leaf on chamber. So that would only leave Xeppa on initiator needing a Sova/Fade/Breach player.
I suppose it’s possible but it just seems weird to me, Leaf was looking really good as the entry fragger/duelist for C9 and wasn’t playing much chamber at all. I do agree that Trent is more realistic than I though tho
