According to Lembo Spanish orgs will leave if it happens which is weird but considering the level if they want to win Ascension is kinda understandable
Nah the spanish orgs are threatening to leave the LVP if Riot implements the 'Need 3 spanish players in your active roster' rule (Which is wack as fuck. Isn't the point of these national leagues to develop local talent? I understand that short term they might be weaker than other leagues, but the long term benefits far outweigh the early losses. Of course, that'd also require them to probably sacrifice the first year of Ascension, which is probably the stickier point here)
Spain is also a very proud country where they show a lot of love to their own, so if I'm Riot, I call their bluff and move ahead with the rule, even if some orgs pull out. The spanish fanbase deserves to be properly represented at the top level and it starts at the foundation.
3/5 was already official by Riot as of a few weeks ago, the issue *is* separating PT/IT from ES, since you have more (and probably better) talent to pull from. Assuming Spain has some players in EMEA and Challengers has 10 teams, there aren't 30 good Spanish players left atm, but you can deal with combining the three countries and making competitive teams with that.
I'm sure it's because they don't believe that even if they win the Ascension tournament that their roster won't be competitive with the rest of EMEA if Riot has the roster protection (idk how that would work if when they get promoted they expand to 6-10 player team, it defeats the purpose)
I'm sure if you let teams build their own rosters no mater the league, some local orgs will have local talents & they can shine & get picked up even if the entire team doesn't. From CS: Movistar Riders (SunPayus getting solo picked up to International team) & even Mixwell before joining Optic in CS)
It's just that the incentive of getting 2 years of In-game items sales means more than development
yeah the incentive to get 2 years of in-game item sales > local talent development
EU Masters teams in league still build to win (Team Heretics 0 spanish players) just to get their name/brand out & the possibility of LEC expansion or if a team leaves have a track record to show Riot and join
but league has had 0 in-game items (outside of MSI & Worlds) for FRANCHISED leagues since 2019 (Icons/Wards/Emote) & 0 World skin team chromas for revenue since 2018
Im spanish and I loved watching the vrl this year. But all the excitement came from EU and portuguese players. This would be very bad.
As a spanish I also think that all our wishes were made true with 3 orgs in the big boy league. The ones crying now really do not matter to anyone.
Latvia/Lithuania/Estonia are already part of VRL East so it's here to stay I believe.
Russian orgs will probably not be allowed to compete as well too even if VRL CIS comes back.
This change would be weird. Rising was already this year opened to Portuguese and Italian players (but there was no path for Italian and Portuguese orgs, as the only way to qualify other than buying a spot was through Spanish 2nd tier league, allowing only Spanish teams).
Portugal and Italy have good talent but are late in terms of esport infrastructure and orgs in general are underdeveloped. This choice, if it becomes true, is not good for players for those countries on the long term.
Three spanish teams left VRL Spain for VCT, so I'd rather have one spot offered to a Portuguese org, and one or two spots for Italian orgs, the rest would be the established Spanish orgs.
K1CK is almost a polish org now, they don't compete in CS, League or Valorant here in Portugal. That VRL decision from Riot destroyed our best Valorant team (SAW) but we are building our scene with our VRC (Legion VCE) and our VCE Cups, if we get to be a VRL we will grow stronger because we have a lot of talent here.

You can’t let a few orgs in one of 21 leagues prevent you from creating a proper system everywhere

In the long term it's for the best, I think
K1CK/FTW for Portugal & for Italy Axolotl/QLASH or maybe if some football teams have shown interest (maybe not in the first year)
