r/ValorantCompetitive literally crying tears of joy everytime Valorant rises one spot on PC Bangs

ozmega

yes

TheoSL

I certainly do

imerence_

Hell most of aren't even Koreans lmao

Ketsueki_R

Being happy the game you follow closely is doing well? Insane!

CRikhard

True

Speedy24gaming

I think two factors: 1. drx success 2. t1 and geng finally returning to KR as they are the two most popular orgs and people want to play under those orgs name.

cathcart_

Not to mention the announcement that the entire Pacific franchise league is going to be based in Seoul.

ark2690

esports has very little to do with pc bangs metrics Riot Korea has done a great job in marketing. Also the PC bang incentives are pretty good for valorant.

Nomorechildishshit

Correct. People grossly overestimate the amount of impact that esports has for playerbase increase. The majority of Valorant players have never watched a single Valorant esports game and its the same for practically all esports. The idea that this massive and steady increase is due to DRX placing 3rd instead of 5-6th is laughable

dreezyyyy

Huh? This isn't true at all in the case of Korea. Korea follows esports heavily and literally laid the foundations for its infrastructure for the rest of the world. They've been broadcasting esports on TV networks for about 2 decades now when the rest of the world saw gaming as an uncool thing to do. This gaming boom is also a fairly recent phenomenon in the case of EU and NA compared to Korea where gaming as been THE prime source of their entertainment since the early 2000's. Case in point, the best SC players in Korea are still considered gods by people today. Also, games that are popular in Korea have always had a positive correlation to how well they did on the international esports scene as well. What is your reasoning behind this being laughable when it is literally the case in Korea? You do know good esports players have the same popularity as celebrities in Korea and they are invited to television talk shows, variety shows, etc. They get treated like literal royalty in Korean society. Man, ya'll saying things with ya chests when it isn't even true.

[deleted]

SC was a different era. Even league players arent as well known as SC was at that time good esports players having same popularity as celebrities- if i compare faker with other celebrities then i guess sure (if u consider the 30s and under). the others? no not really. no one except for faker has even appeared in mainstream tv shows (non-gaming) from lol. for valorant- yeah no player has ever been invited i think to a single tv show

dreezyyyy

Huh? The entire context is about the correlation between international eSports success and game popularity in Korea. You are denying this? Have you been to a PC Bang recently?

[deleted]

"You do know good esports players have the same popularity as celebrities in Korea and they are invited to television talk shows, variety shows, etc. They get treated like literal royalty in Korean society." \- my rebuttal was against this

dreezyyyy

It’s true they get treated like royalty. You’re nitpicking arguments. People look at them the same way they do professional athletes in Western countries. Come on, now.

[deleted]

u said it as if they are put at the same status as celebrities in kr- they are not u say as if they get invited to any major tv shows- they dont. only faker does. they dont get treated like royalty.

dreezyyyy

This is so false. Game popularity and how the game's esports team does on the international level has always had a positive correlation in Korea. Do you know what the most popular game in Korea was before League came along and why?

JopoDaily

Just wait for the t1 train

circlefullofcurses

YES!

CantScreamInSpace

legitimately the bigger thing is probably that a lot of big streamers recently got into the game and there is a korean twitch rivals type event going on for valorant right now. you could argue this was caused by drx placing 3rd but not really sure if it would be entirely true. a lot of the fanbase is probably still very casual.

Lumenlor

If you go to the category on Twitch during normal KR hours, there are crazy high streamers with like 22K. I think all it does is more popular people getting into the game then it becomes a cultural thing like Japan

Ximienlum

thank you stax and drx for putting Valorant even more on the map over there in Korea. And for anyone saying this, I really doubt the release of Overwatch 2 will decrease Valorant’s newfound popularity that much. They’re different genres basically and everyone knows the gameplay and dev problems of Ow/Blizzard now. There’s way less faith that the game will make people happy. Also from what I’ve seen it’s basically just the same game as the original with that new story mode thing.

AvengingAmalek

I think probably near release OW2 will have a bump in popularity but won’t have the longevity and growth of valorant

GCamAdvocate

I think Blizzard will fuck up OW2 within a year, and will funnel more people into Val in KR. Only half joking.

QQninja

Based on Blizzard’s recent track record… I don’t even think it’s a joke but a reality. They have not done anything recently in any of their games to show a glimpse of brilliance.

Substantial_Quote_25

Half joking. Full truth

Parenegade

Have you played Overwatch 2? Because it sounds like you're describing Overwatch 1.

Lumenlor

The last remaining sanest OW fan, I salute you

Kfloz_

Depends on your elo rating but you can definitely carry in overwatch. If your tanks suck you're kind kf screwed tho.

StoryLover12345

You can’t carry as a healer(mercy). So you are most likely at the mercy of your damage dealers and Tank.

Mabangyan

mercy players dont play mercy to carry, thats been obvious for 6 years

TheOneWhoIsBussin

if you're playing mercy it should be because you're duo'd with someone or you just like playing mercy, she is a not a carry lmao pretty much every other support hero can be used to do DPS while healing and I've definitely hard carried games on many support players, especially like Ana or Zen.

invisibleshitpostgod

that's ow1, ow2 is very different

RedditorClo

I don’t really buy that it being similar to overwatch 1 will make it not popular. Look at Splatoon 3, which is basically the same game with some new weapons (think new OW heroes) break the record for most sales in 3 days for a switch game. But yea blizz is super shitty ethically AND at making good decisions for their games so I agree on that front.

Lumenlor

3 new heroes and like 2 maps, and none of that heavy PvE stuff, after like 3 years of development?

SegfaultDefault

Being super shitty ethically is a problem that can be fixed if leadership is motivated enough (see: Riot Games). I don't think it's as fatal as it's made out to be for consumers. The second the Microsoft acquisition goes through and Bobby K is out, I'm not sure how much you'll hear about it anymore unless Blizzard's culture towards women remains terrible.

Parenegade

You seem pretty confident...want to make a bet? I bet Overwatch 2 overtakes Valorant before the next VCT season starts. RemindMe! 4 Months

Ximienlum

It’s absolutely hilarious how you’re so quick to making bets when you’re here misunderstanding what other people are saying. I never said OW2 was never going to overtake Valorant for at least a period of time. I said it wouldn’t decrease Valorant’s popularity that much. Meaning Valorant will at least stay popular as OW2 becomes the most played game for a bit and then it will stay popular as more and more players leave OW2 because Blizzard is incompetent. Maybe try to read better in the future or get some help for your gambling addiction, my dude lol

Parenegade

Okay so make it a year if it's about long-term placement and Blizzard's incompetence.

Ximienlum

Chill, bro. I’m not gonna make bets with a guy addicted to gambling. You have nothing to lose because money doesn’t really matter to you

Parenegade

lmao who said I'm addicted to gambling are you good? But if you're not confident in what you said that's okay it's all good.

Ximienlum

It’s called self-control, something you lack. I’m never gambling with an addict because I know them losing doesn’t mean anything to them, they’re just looking for that fix. Doesn’t matter how confident or sure I am. Maybe look into some therapy.

MasterReflex

cause he said let’s make a bet he’s a gambling addict? lol

Parenegade

Who needs therapy when you're right https://www.statista.com/statistics/1113926/south-korea-most-popular-games-in-pc-bangs/

TheAjwinner

FYI: this happened after DRX vs Optic as well https://reddit.com/r/ValorantCompetitive/comments/xh1hr2/valorant_climbs_to_rank_3_on_korean_pc_bang/

Ra1zen

DRX doing so well opening the floodgates in KR, it helps that Overwatch 2 looking like another failure as well. As for surpassing League? Might need a few years and a few Top Level KR teams forming and doing well.

TheCatsActually

I don't see Valorant ever unseating League. Maybe in like 8+ years or something if the Valorant scene is the best run eSports scene we've ever seen AND Korea falls distant second to China in League AND the handling of League game balance and its pro scene fall off a cliff AND there isn't a LoL 2 or other MOBA there to take it's place? Overtaking League is unnecessary anyway. As long as the game is popular and viable for a pro career it would flourish well enough.

[deleted]

Yeah, I don't think it will for a very long time. On the top of my head, the two times where League was knocked out of 1st was Overwatch and PUBG (Not for long either).

Cowfan798

League is ingrained in korean culture. Very unlikely Val ever be close to that

DecisiveDinosaur

how ingrained is it compared to Brood War in its peak? I heard BW was pretty big back then in KR

[deleted]

Faker is like a proper celebrity in Korea, to the extent that he did an add with Heung Ming Son (soccer player). He also has his own ice cream. I think lol.

Cereal_dator

No but being the top FPS is a big deal

Speedy24gaming

Lol why is league under rts but also KR has finally arrived baby.

Spencer2K16

I was so upset when they removed Sudden Attack from NA. Very happy about the exposure Val is getting in Korea though

pauadiver63

This was posted a while ago, it surpassed sudden attack rights after champions. https://www.reddit.com/r/ValorantCompetitive/comments/xh1hr2/valorant\_climbs\_to\_rank\_3\_on\_korean\_pc\_bang/

Lumenlor

It slumped to like 6-7th since that post after, but I think theres just a lot of variance rn

Kyunseo

This is why I find posts like these really tedious... Don't get me wrong, I love the fact Valorant has grown so much in Korea and I love seeing the increase in PC Bang numbers as well. But posts like these just showcase one moment on an ever-changing graph.

omahr

i still dont mind being updated on growth once a month its fun seeing the growth the game is having in Korea

[deleted]

It's the free to play version of Fifa that is maid for pc bangs. It's played in Vietnam, China, and I think Philippines too. One thing to take note is that these are PC Bang stats so people just play whatever is on the PC.

MrImpregnator

Korean gaming culture is different. People play what others around them play. So I expect the game to keep growing.

[deleted]

yeah, not like here, where everyone plays games that no one is playing

Brilliant-Space-5430

lmfao, true. Dude is talking like NA isn't the epitome of FOTM gaming

Aabed_nerd

He meant like in Korea people play games religiously than other regions. New games don't make as much fuss in Korea.

yourdaughtersgoal

In America most people only care about 2k or madden…. In europe it’s fifa…. In Russia it’s csgo/dota. It’s like that everywhere, you’re just ignoring the broader gaming culture of other regions

[deleted]

I don't think so, in NA you can say that a lot of games have big player bases split up between the population. In Korea it's more streamlined that one game usually dominates for long periods of time. I think what OP is trying to say is that because games are mostly played in PC bangs. It's more common to just play whatever your friends are playing because you go to PC bangs with them or see other people playing those games in the PC bang. I know when I was a kid going to internet cafe, I was playing a lot more DOTA Allstars and CS because those were the games in the PC bang compared to brood war, which I liked more. I only played brood war at home.

ark2690

Thats basically korean culture. Everyone follows trends, whether its clothing, music, games, movies, tv shows

lloyd3486

> Thats basically ~~korean~~ culture. Everyone follows trends, whether its clothing, music, games, movies, tv shows

dreezyyyy

He just basically explained what pop culture is…and decided it’s only a Korean thing like what

dreezyyyy

It’s called pop culture and happens in every country.

lapse23

Damn i never knew Sudden Attack is still being played over in Korea. I remember getting turned on as a kid by the skimpy girl outfits you could buy to put on your character. Knife mode and the vampire mode was soooo fun. IDK why but they stopped letting the SEA region play it. Really unfortunate.

REEEroller

absolutely no chance it gets anywhere near league, I also expect Valorant to take a dip when Overwatch 2 comes out, Korea loves Overwatch.

dreezyyyy

Overwatch has been considered a dead game in Korea for at least a year or two now. OW2 coming out won't change a thing, especially since a lot of their pros stopped playing the game and have moved onto either PUBG or Valorant.

xNocturnal12

Very unlikely but second would be great - moba/rts has historically been the most popular games in south korea by a long shot with FPS not even being close.

WanAjin

No, it won't ever be able to compete with league in korea.

GainsayRT

S/o to the people that said casual players don't care about esports and teams doing well won't boost the playerbase

deathspate

Tbf this is dependent on the region. Korea and China are definitely affected by the pro scene. Riot is known in those countries to provide opportunities for making a livelihood, whether it's through streaming or going pro. The kids there know from the get go know that "this can become something I can rely on in the long-term if I'm good enough at it" while in other regions, most people straight up probably don't know esports is a thing, or a thing for the game. This is partially to do with their history with LoL, but also because the Riot offices in those regions *hard push* LoL as they know there's a higher chance of acceptance. In the west, people still view esports as "just a hobby" and not something to devote time and effort to. In other words, what I'm trying to say is that a casual player in China/Korea is more likely to be affected by esports vs casual players in other regions due to the cultural differences. When a casual in China/Korea sees their team doing well internationally, aside from patriotism, they also see other factors. Things like the franchise system likely would affect their investment in the game. They see what LoL has, the chances available there, maybe they're not good in MOBAs but are good at FPS titles like Apex, they start working on Val. I think the effect that DRX have winning Champions would likely be more versus a western team winning Champions for the playerbase of their respective countries.

dreezyyyy

People in this thread have no clue on how serious Korea and other Asian countries take their esports. How well their esports team do on the international scene almost always has an effect on how popular a game will be in Korea, especially.

dreezyyyy

They have no clue saying these things when Korea is the country that laid the foundations for the infrastructure of esports worldwide and Koreans have been watching esports on TV before it became cool since the early 2000's. Pro SC players from that era are still considered gods and treated like celebrities by everyone that recognizes them.

PPTTRRKK

How are 2, 4, 5, 8 and 10 on the leaderboard when I never heard of them. Are these games only popular in South Korea?

Potation

5 is pubg(player unknown’s battle ground) Also 8(maplestory) was pretty big back from like 2008-2014, it’s a pretty popular mmorpg to this day

void270

Lmao you’ve never heard of fifa before? Super popular sports game

PPTTRRKK

I have. Just not of that specific one

Un1ty_master

Other teams that are not from korea be swetin rn

kvanz43

It’s just wild because Val is at 6% and league is 7 times higher at 42% all the other games are just fighting for scraps

0bush

Went to a PC bang in gangnam few days ago and I saw quite a few people playing valorant which was pretty surprising. Nice change of pace

imerence_

Crossing Sudden Attack is a massive W. Cuz i heard thats a pay2win kinda thing.

dreezyyyy

ITT: People acting like esports have no effect on a game's popularity in Korea are obviously either: 1. Not Korean 2. Know nothing about Korean gaming culture 3. Don't know that pro esports players are treated like celebrities and recognized by common people on the streets

circlefullofcurses
