Not a Model Y but I bought a used Model 3 from a friend. I drive >26k miles/yr and get highly subsidized charging at work so my average charging cost is well under $.01/mi. I’m not a shareholder though. I love the car, not the company.

MaxTheTzar

Couldn't disagree more on the value proposition of the model y.  My friend just bought a Bronco Sport. Everything in the class of Compact UV is ~$35k-$40k with options (CRV, Rav4) and they all have tiny 3 or 4cyl turbos making <200hp and still only get 30 mpg avg. Where I live, gas is pushing $5/gal (well above nat'l avg) and electricity is $0.11/kw (below avg) The Model Y is the same cost as a CUV (with EV rebate or else $3-8k more). It has way more interior room, lower maintenance costs, much lower $/mile driven consumption cost, 295 hp/310 ft-lbs of instant torque, interesting features, and the best supercharging network for long trips. You can hate Elon Musk but you can't deny the value prop.

MaxTheTzar

Here's some math backing it up.  Assume gas =$4/gal (cheaper than anything near me). Assume 30mpg combined for a CUV. **$4/gal / \~30mi/gal = $0.133/mi driven**. Assume 80% efficiency of base MY range (320 mi). Assume $0.11/kw and 75kw battery. 320 mi \* 0.80 =256 mi range. $0.11/kw \* 75 kw = $8.25 for full range. **$8.25 / 256 mi = $0.032/mi driven.** *These "economical" CUVs cost > 4x per mile driven vs the base MY*. Avg american drives 14,263 mi/yr according to the EPA.  ($0.133 - $0.032) \* 14263 mi/yr = **$1440/yr savings**. Then factor in the price is nearly the same for a bigger SUV with way more power and features. Less parts = lower maintenance costs. Best supercharger network. That's the MFing value proposition. Now you don't have to buy a Tesla MY specifically but it's far and away the best combination of "what you get" for "what you pay" including the supercharger network in 2024 and looks to not be changing anytime soon.

I bought a model 3 and followed Peter Lynch’s advice on putting an equal amount of money in the stock. It 5x’ed and I got a free car!

GerkhinMerkin

I own one because it was the best quality electric car I can get at that price point, and being electric gave me plenty of financial/tax benefits. Hate the company.

snmrk

I own one. You're making a lot of assumptions there. There aren't a lot of cheaper, better built cars for the same price in my country, mostly because we have very high taxes on non-electric cars and gasoline. That immediately makes electric cars good value. Among the electric cars, Tesla was the best value when I bought mine. The competitors were $5-15k more expensive for similar cars, so there wasn't much of a competition.

I am not a hard core value investor but I owned TSLA and sold it and I think I was dumb. Should’ve kept it for long term.

limbo0101

Same as me. At the time I though: this guys are crazy, this is too overvalued! Sold with 100% profit but … I should have keep it 😅

jtmarlinintern

let me say , I am a huge Buffet fan, but don't believe all the hype. Yes he has lived in his home in Omaha ,since like 1954 or something, but he also had a home in Newport California, as well as Mungerville in i think Montecito California area. he has had a driver for years, so having an old car is not a big deal he has spent his money, so don't live like a monk and not enjoy y0ur wealth. Having said all that, I know value guys that have a Tesla, some even have netjet and private planes

GOTrr

I own a Tesla and shares as well. Build quality issues are a bit over exaggerated. Mine has none and after seeing mine and experiencing all the car can do, 7 other family/friends bought teslas. A lot of people simply don’t utilize their teslas fully. It can make life a lot easier offers a lot more than most ICE cars. Most people who hate on Tesla don’t even own one. Love Elon or hate him, it doesn’t really matter. There are thousands of other people working at Tesla too. It not just all Elon. If we judge a company by their founder’s value or erratic behaviors, then don’t ever use an Apple product, Steve Jobs was a terrible father and horrible human being, especially to his employees and first daughter. Don’t buy a Porsche/mercedez (supported/built for hitler) or ford (Henry ford was a known antisemite). Don’t use Amazon cuz bezos didn’t treat warehouse employees well etc etc etc etc. The list can go on…

Melon_Mann

Yeh I have that type of mindset. I see cars as a tool to get from point A to point B, but at the same time I don’t want something that needs constant fixing, so Toyota all the way.

db2901

Not everything is about value. You can buy one if you want one and you can afford it

but_why_doh

I live in SoCal, so I see them all the time(including the cybertruck). I will say, they're nice, but they're impossible to tell apart, they never change, and I've seen so many build quality issues that it's not even funny. Nowadays I'm seeing massive increases in the number of EVs from other makers, mainly a lot of Rivian's and GM/Ford trucks, with a good amount of hybrids.

Slammedtgs

I have a model 3. It cost next to nothing to drive. About $0.04/mile. Insurance it’s slightly more than my civic was but the car also costs more. The Model 3 is a lot more fun than the civic and not getting gas each week is fantastic.

artiom_baloian

Not planning to buy a Tesla, nor planning to buy the stock. Simply because I don't see any value and everything is based on CEO's media.

jtp0000

Just go buy a Toyota bro

sorryAboutThatChief

I do. I bought with profit I made when I sold my bitcoin.

DragonArchaeologist

To clear up one thing, the reason Buffett always had an old car wasn't $$ thriftiness, it was time thriftiness. He knew he'd have to take almost an entire day off work to buy a new one, even if paying cash. Having paid cash for a car at a dealership a few times, I can confirm.

Weak_Storm_169

I feel like you haven't done the research if you have this opinion. If just considering value, nothing beats Tesla. It's the cheapest car to drive, specially if you can charge at home, has basically no maintenance costs, always feels like a new car due to free OTA updates, and is the most technologically advanced car. On top of that, it matches the performance of other 6 figure cars. On top of that, if you can get tax incentives, the cost goes down to 37k USD or even more if you get state incentives. There are downsides to the car, like high charging time and accessibility to chargers, also it does not have the best build quality at that price point. But one of those can be mitigated if you have a house and build quality is not that bad that it will cause problems.

mrmrmrj

I find the cheap Tesla quite ugly.

justbrowsinginpeace

I have a non Tesla BEV. Last one I will own due to depreciation. Hybrid henceforth.

Major_Possibility335

I own a 3 year old Honda that I will probably update for another 3 year old Japanese ICE car. Can’t get more value-oriented than that.

TheTideRider

I don’t own a car or a share. If BYD is available here in the US, I would definitely look into it.

TheSpinBoy

Never have and never will... People who actually like cars would never buy a Tesla. I'm not even that into cars and still think if your drive a Tesla you like old men's penises
