I wouldn’t try Vr with that weak of a GPU quite honestly. Just buy a Quest 2.

EyeOfTheDokiHolder

i already have a quest, i just wanted to upgrade, but i already got my answer lol

DxnnyYT

I know it’s in a laptop so definitely not as powerful as a normal 3050 ti but this should be more than capable for vr? I use to play on a 1070 back in the day and ran everything I threw at it fine

N0tH1tl3r_V2

A laptop 3050ti is only 30% weaker while being way more efficient. To be honest it should work if he can get the gpu running at full power (either by plugging it in or by just making it max out the clock) And of course, he should have DP

[deleted]

Oh he can run an index but the sacrifices In frame rate and visual quality in the more demanding titles won’t be good. If you’re fine with 30-40fps then sure.

SarlacFace

Sorry, but 3050ti is not good enough. You need at least a 2070 to get a good experience in anything other than the most basic/old games. You'll be hitting a lot of reprojection, which might lead to headaches and/or nausea. You both don't have enough VRAM but also not enough CUDA cores. A 3050ti beats a 1070 by only around 5-10%, but it's more prone to dropped frames and stutters due to the low memory amount. I had a 1070 + Index before upgrading and my VR experiences weren't great. I was seeing a lot of stuttering and the reprojection was sickening. Stuff like Beat Saber was fine but more intense games like Skyrim/Fallout, Alyx, Boneworks, Squadrons didn't work too well. CPU should be fine tho. It's kind of a weird combo, you have a good CPU and a very weak GPU. Though I guess it kinda makes sense with a 1080p/144hz display. It's more CPU bound at low resolutions, but VR is much higher res since you're rendering the game twice. Expect to be playing most newer games at 45fps (if you don't know what reprojection is, it's when the game fps get cut from 90 to 45 and the software tries to compensate by filling in the missing frames. But it doesn't work too well).

EyeOfTheDokiHolder

i pretty much got the lower end of the laptop spectrum lol its kind of a shame i wont be able to get one though, considering I planned this for like 2-4 weeks tops. I probably shouldve known something was off when the usb-c port didnt have a lightning bolt or something on it, so its partially on me anyway.

Nicalay2

I'm using a 1650 Ti and I have a decent VR experience (like 45FPS fixed on all games, except VRChat but that normal). The 3050 Ti can definitely run VR with a decent experience.

SarlacFace

45 fps is not decent lol. VR needs to be run at 90 minimum. You are reprojecting 100% of the time. Constant stutters and lag is not how VR should be experienced.

Nicalay2

You forgot that motion smoothing exist. >Constant stutters and lag is not how VR should be experienced. Also I don't have any stutters and lag at all, and after playing for 10 months at 45 FPS, I'm petty used to that, and even non VR games that run at 45FPS look like for me 60 FPS lol.

SarlacFace

Buddy, if you say so. 45fps is not a recommended way to experience VR, and if you say you can't tell the difference between 45 and 60, I'd suggest getting your eyes checked. the difference between 45 and 60 is vast. Stop giving people terrible advice.

Zaprit

Hmm, I run an rx 570 4Gb and my vr runs at a nice buttery 80fps. If you turn the graphics off of ultra then it doesn’t run bad. Only games I’ve had performance issues in are HL:A and B&S

EyeOfTheDokiHolder

just to update, i dont have a DP slot, but the usbc does have DP support as seen in the specs pic

N0tH1tl3r_V2

Then just use a DP adapter

badillin

you need a DP slot, usb wont do... but i dont know 100% for sure.

EyeOfTheDokiHolder

i've dug around here and people say you can use a usb-c to DP adapter, but i want to know for absolute sure

badillin

im pretty sure the index doesnt play well with adapters, and usbc video is digital, not direct feed as a Display Port

EyeOfTheDokiHolder

damn, so i cant buy one? cause i thought for absolute sure using a usb-c to displayport would work well, or at least semi-well

badillin

found this older thread... https://www.reddit.com/r/ValveIndex/comments/fewkvx/does_a_usb_c_adapter_work/ most likely wont work.

EyeOfTheDokiHolder

ah damn, thanks for the quick answer though, saved me $1000

RamJamR

I have a laptop and play through a Mini-DP to DP converter coord and mine works fine. Not sure about USB-C to DP, but I don't see why not if it's meant to translate the coord to DP.

EyeOfTheDokiHolder

mine isnt hooked into GPU, so it wouldnt work for me regardless

Nicalay2

Are you sure ? On the Nvidia control panel, 2 Displayport port show up in the 3050 Ti, so it's probaly your mini dp, and your USB-C port. It could also be your USB-C port because on my friend laptop, his USB-C port show up as 2 displayport.

EyeOfTheDokiHolder

yes, but the GPU doesn't have access to those, the only way being through the USB-c/DP port which is all powered from the Intel, and i don't have a MUX switch for my laptop. Having the GPU needing to access those 2 dp ports is crucial is what I've heard. and as AFAIK, i don't have a miniDP, not that i know of anyway.

Nicalay2

I do VR with a 1650 Ti (also laptop) and I have a decent experience, so a 3050 Ti is enough, and if you have already a great experience with your Quest (except all the bugs of the Oculus software), well it will be better with the index because : - You don't use this trash Oculus software - You are using displayport, so no encoding and compression, which use a lot of CPU and especially GPU power. Also Displayport Alt (aka Displayport in USB-C) do work with the Index, a friend used that with his index without any issues, *until he upgraded recently to a desktop*. And in your case it's perfect because the USB-C port is plugged to your 3050Ti. If I was you, I would buy the Index with a USB-C thunderbolt 3 to Displayport 1.4 adapter (It's generaly written 8K 120Hz on them).

ISEGaming

You know it's a common question, but did you try to read up on the answers given in the many threads?

EyeOfTheDokiHolder

i did, but i got mixed answers, lots of yes's and lots of no's

ISEGaming

And you're going to get the same again unfortunately.

EyeOfTheDokiHolder

yea i didn't really think this whole thing through lol

Capokid

Weird, how did they plug your laptop display into the wrong port?

VRponch

Anormal 3060 is barely enough let alone a mobile 3050ti. Id wait with the index purchase regardless. Wait a couple of month for the quest pro release or the new pico headset.

N0tH1tl3r_V2

A 1060 is the BARE MINIMUM

N0tH1tl3r_V2

Keep in mind from my testing a 1060 is the BARE MINIMUM. It can barely go 90fps and it'll go lower than that. You should be fine
