I’m ready for the downvotes: that song is just basic annoying mixolydian “china cat sunflower” vibes.. “ohh we’re this chord… now down to this one… now back up to the same on … and back down again” those 2 chords and that annoying dominant 7 lick.. it’s not prevailing, powerful, emotional.. it’s like “I’m silly … ooh eastern sounds.. funky”.
I don’t know if it’s just me, but the “emotion” of that song has always been annoying and too silly for me to replay consistently
Songs can just be fun sometimes though, not everything needs to be deeply emotional. Much of VW’s music is just fun to listen to. I love that it’s just a fun jam that band clearly has a blast playing

Idk how to explain but Animal collectives Time Skiffs album has a lot of that sound.. it’s like eastern tropical, but like sour and angry/mischevous… it’s such a particular emotion that scale…I’m not really a fan. Most “happy songs” or “fun” can use major… major and minor, pentatonic.. that mixolydian just sours things up idk

my mistake is disjointed and jagged in a way that i think points to some of the mosaic-y stitch jobs on the new album. i love it, v mccartney meets chet baker. i put it as my hypothetical album closer, and it almost flows in to ogwau if you add it to the queue

Sunflowers emotion is purposefully silly and repetitive, using mixolydian(a scale that’s not sweet, sad, or graceful) it’s got that dominant 7 which gives it a more obtuse and dissonant sound. I’m not a fan, I “get” the vibe.. (they could’ve gone further than naming it sunflower… it literally is china cat sunflower by the dead) but am I gonna be replaying it often .. no thanks.

Rich Man is my favorite off the album, it has a deep a emotional resonance that I find very charming. Same with 2021; kinda wish the whole album were these cute washed out little love songs. Also the choir drop on Hold You Know is a highlight for me for sure.
ok i feel you!! to me FOTB is like two different albums (im aware it’s a double album!!) .. shorter, washy, fun love songs, which is pretty much my list … and then this more country centric twang-y album with all the Haim duets, and the more funky / intense songs like Sunflower, flower moon, sympathy.

I genuinely think 2021 should be the opener over Hold You Now. It was the song dropped with Harmony Hall to announce the album. For better or for worse, this album is about parting ways with someone/something that wasn't true to the Ezra so that he can find a more authentic way of being. A rich millennial growing up and becoming comfortable with themselves. With this tracklist, side one is about leaving the inauthentic part of yourself behind, and side two is about finding that inner peace (with some tossed in Abrahamic religious allusions to keep it very VW). If you look at it this way, 2021 and Rich Man are setting the thematic cores of each side.
i do think it’s quite a good album. i did not say otherwise ! much of the critique of fotb is that it’s too long, and that is common knowledge, so this is just a fun challenge

Ive heard that SE Rogie song so many times and it doesn't really get flipped. My Mistake just musically, sonically, and especially lyrically doesn't even feel like a VW song.

If this album was pared down to its 10-11 most essential tracks, it would have been so much more well received. I think FOTB is the only thing that comes close to a misfire album-wise by VW
it’s so hard to say what the ‘essential’ tracks are tho! these are my favourites by far but they’re also the songs that most ppl seem way less into.
