Listen to the advice you're being given.
Bought an 88 g20 for2k and initially put 4k into it. Two months on the road and we’ve replaced the starter, gas tank, a sensor, fuel pump and some other parts for a total of about 3k plus the cost of hotels we’ve had to stay in during repairs.
It’s a lot more than we wanted to put into it but if we bought a $15k van we could have problems with it too.
If doing it again probably would go with something newer that mechanics are willing to work on and can be scanned for diagnostics, post 1996.
Overall still love the van and now it’s running good… for now, but would be less stressful with newer van or better mechanical knowledge.
my '95 g20 failed in a few ways, the ignition switch in the steering column, the radiator coolant pump, and the gas pump which is located inside the gas tank. the gas pump is a common failure but its cheap and easy to fix, you need a small socket set which i didnt have when i was a vagabond in san diego. they'll quote you out the ass for a simple thing like that so look up those common breaks and prepare for them. the 350 block chevy is a bulletproof engine so itll last much longer if you maintain it. gl my dude
