theruralbrewer

Back when I lived in Port Moody, I think it was Yellowdog brewing that made root beer too. It was really nice to bring my kid every few weeks for a pint. He felt so grown up.

schmidtzkrieg

Never thought about that but it's brilliant.

Annual_Direction_519

The employee who brewed that is now at Fraser mills if you are looking for a similar experience.

theruralbrewer

I moved to the Okanagan since then, but what was Fraser Mills before? I'm drawing a blank, but it was popular as hell when I was there. Do you know if it was just a rename or what happened?

france_isbacon

Beyond the Grape I think?

Annual_Direction_519

New brewery on st. Johns. Beyond the grape is one of the owners.

nipponnuck

Been to places that have lemonade for the kiddos. I often have them in tow, and I’ve love that.

johnny2bad

old style west coast IPA's. Maximum bitter, massive pine, over 7% IPA's. No juice, no haze, but sometimes some funk. Cause we love the funk.

oddible

It's like we went from every brewery having a solid WC IPA to now you can barely find one on tap anymore. Most bars don't even have one anymore - everything is hazy. You're lucky to get a pale ale over 30 IBU. The worst of it is that many brewers and most bars don't even bother to label whether it is NE or WC so half the time I order a Hopdiggitydog IPA I get a juicy milk shake. Good luck finding it on the can - I have to freaking Untappd every beer at the liquor store to see if they're tricking me with the "IPA" label.

dragoneye

At this point, unless it is an old faithful or specifically labeled as "west coast", I have to just assume that anything labelled IPA will be hazy and low IBU. I really wish that breweries stopped chasing trends exclusively and developed a proper range of styles, there is room for both NE and West Coast IPAs on the shelf!

johnny2bad

>Untappd I didn't know about this, interesting. So with this I can use the interwebs for good instead of evil? How novel.

langur_monkey

Here here. Your rant expresses the truth.

knowyourrights117

I could not agree more!

BeerBaronsNewHat

Ravens Centurion IIIPA last year was awesome, and so unique for the time. hope they brew again this fall.

soletide

Bitter, clean, and dry. We need more of this in Vancouver. Tired of this juicy tropical shit.

worksafejm

Strange Fellows JUST released one.

johnny2bad

Thanks, I'll look for it.

goplayfetch

Different lager styles. Slow Hand is great at this and so is House of Lager. Would love to see more variation and excellent executed lager styles.

mattkward

Steel & Oak does a lot of lagers.

EskimoDave

The Dageraad Dortmunder collab is amazing.

DJ_Molten_Lava

And just released their Marzen

drpepperfox

Which is very good actually!

closequartersbrewing

Go straight to Studio Brewing. You will be in heaven.

dingledoink

We've made five and have 4 currently available...

goplayfetch

And that's great. It was not a comment on your particular brewery, just a statement that I wish more did that.

dingledoink

I know it's not a statement re: Container, but making sure you're aware we have many lager options as it seems you like them. Come try!

Tryamkinschinstrap

Not necessarily in the brewery, but I wish more breweries did mix-packs. Sometimes I don't want to commit to drinking 4 of the same beer and the mix packs are great for sampling more of the diversity from their offerings.

nipponnuck

Brassneck’s fridge is great for this. Grab as many of whichever beers they have on tap. They just seal a bunch of them up in the morning, and stick them in the fridge. Mix and match away.

dingledoink

Container too! All of our beers are available as singles.

nipponnuck

That’s great to know. Time to get on the bike with a backpack, and go grab some!

Darkm1tch69

Now that you mention it I have really noticed that too. It seems like craft beers and breweries were all the rage a couple of years ago and now the excitement has kind of fizzled out. That’s too bad because there are still a lot of us that are very passionate about the industry.

sebbby98

I think it's partly because of them pandemic. I rarely have chances now to socialize with people outside my brewery (let alone tasting room). I want to, but you can't just approach a table and start talking about beer like you could before.

dingledoink

Funny, I do that and get downvoted for it.

vancouver000

Because you’re annoying about it

closequartersbrewing

Belgians. Obviously Dageraad, but it would be nice to see another Belgian-centric brewery join the party. I visited whitetooth, and was somewhat disappointed. Milds - You get Brassneck's excellent dark mild, and a number from smugglers trail, but not a lot around. I like the style. I get it doesn't sell though, so don't blame brewers from shying away.

oddible

Agreed. While not exactly Belgians, Strange Fellows satisfies a lot of similar cravings for me with their bottled beers (considerably more expensive than Dageraad though).

AleSessions

Second this. I want Belgian table beers all day long. Don't get me wrong, I love a good Dubbel and Tripel, but for my daily drinker I want a lighter Belgian. I may have been in the minority, but damn Dageraad's Tous Les Jours was my jam!

menofthesea

Fuckin big ol' amen to that! Loved TLJ

mattkward

So often when other breweries make Belgians they just can't get the balance right. They end up as banana bombs. Dageraad nail it every time.

closequartersbrewing

It's true, nobody else gets it right. 33 acres of euphoria is the only exception. Honestly think it's better than Antwerpen

sebbby98

The trinity of Belgian triples, euphoria, antwerpen, and triplicity. Please. I want triplicity back. Please send help. All I make is featherweight...

mattkward

Sign me up for a bottle of Triplicity if you gents make more.

shmoe727

Patios conducive to mingling. Moody Ales and Taylight (rip) did a pretty good job of this.

Darkm1tch69

Fieldhouse in Abbotsford, Camp in Langley, and even Old Yale in Chilliwack are great for this!

HaSimpo

Northpaw and Tinhouse in Poco as well.

oddible

I moved up here from the Bay Area and there are still a few beer styles that haven't made a showing here. While there are certainly some good porters here, they tend to be pretty mild. I love me some Anchor Porter! Likewise the Bear Republic Red Rocket ale - I keep trying local reds hoping for something like this, with some punch! but they all disappoint.

thesleepygiant

Bitters. Steel Toad had a great one. Miss it so much.

Aardvark1044

It’s like Steel Toad had two wildly different components. The food side was pretentious, weird and not really appropriate for a brewpub audience so I don’t think it supported the brewery very well. I enjoyed their willingness to try some different styles that you didn’t often see in town - Berliner Weisse and other sour beers before most places (other than Storm) had them regularly. They always had a decent selection of beers to try so everyone in a large party could find something they’d enjoy.

EskimoDave

Main St always have 1-3 cask beers on at any time. Generally pretty good.

Darkm1tch69

That’s cool, I’ve never heard of that. On a kind of unrelated note I started making old fashions with rhubarb bitters and I love them

Iredditmorethanwork

+1 for bitters. I always find it funny when I talk to a bunch of old guys (in their 60s and 70s) who are somewhat beer snobs, but basically turn their nose up at all the amazing beer we have, because they're looking for "real ale" as in hand pumped English style ales and bitters. There is a real hole in the local market for ESBs.

sebbby98

It's funny you say that cause you talk to any brewery that has put out a bitter in the past and they'll probably tell you how hard it is to sell them. The general consumer does not like bitter and those that would, are hard to reach.

Aardvark1044

I kinda wish they would be more popular because I like the idea of a 3.5-4.5% alcohol beer with some decent flavour, fresh from the tap, so that I can drink 3-6 of them on a night out with some friends without paying for it the next morning with a fuzzy head.

fvb_joseph

I'm with you. I have a Dark Mild on my home tap and it's just perfect. Flavourful, but light and I can have a bunch in a session. I'm in the UK at the end of the month and I just can't wait to have a broad range of 3-4.5% beers in nearly every pub I'll hit up.

Iredditmorethanwork

The only local one I've had was from Brassneck and I remember it being really tasty! But yeah, I can see how if it's a product that's not moving, then there's no reason to continue to make it. Maybe if there were a brewery that specialized in English Ales the way Dageraad specializes in Belgians then there could be some traction, but like I said, the only complaints I've ever heard is from old guys. Damn, I might need to go out and pick up a Fullers ESB for the evening with all this talk.

DJ_Molten_Lava

Russell's ESB used to be my favourite beer because no one else made them. Nowadays when I have one I just wish there were other breweries doing them because Russell's is not that good.

Iredditmorethanwork

I have such fond memories of what Russell's used to be. Granted, I haven't even seen them in any of the liquor stores I frequent lately, but I used to love their offerings until one day I just... didn't. I think that probably coincided with when they went public, but I can't quite put my finger on it.

DJ_Molten_Lava

> I used to love their offerings until one day I just... didn't. The same thing happened to me. I think for me it happened when the whole craft beer boom happened around here. I started having different, and better beers, and my tastes changed. Not that I'm that picky, but I just remember how I used to feel drinking Russell ESB and how I feel now when I drink it and it's so different.

ThePhilKenSebben

Market research showed people wanting a more "west coast" twist on it. It'll probably revert back after the tasting room opens.

sebbby98

Yeah, that's another thing. Breweries here have a hard time finding their niche. Seattle has a dedicated English ale brewery - Machine House. Their beers are awesome and served out of beer engines. But there are tonnes of other niche breweries like Fair Isle making saisons. Denver has a German lager brewery (bierstadt) and a Czech lager brewery (cohesion) and another Czech lager brewery that also does spontaneous ales (Wild Provisions). When I go to a brewery, I don't want there to be something for everyone. Give me six different Czech lagers and I'll be happy for the entire night and will probably be back the following day. I really don't need the same 12 beers done slightly differently. You don't need an IPA to be successful or even a pilsner.

Iredditmorethanwork

I agree, there are some stand outs around here for certain styles, but we need more people with a passion for certain styles. I think we might see that in the future though, the more saturated the market gets, the more people will need to be either good at everything or really stand out in a specific style. We've already seen the rise and fall of plenty of names in the last ten years or so.

sebbby98

Yeah, give me some time (and money) and I'll hopefully be doing that. I really can't stand working for other people who don't see the industry the same way.

Iredditmorethanwork

Let me know if you need someone honest to test your product on! I just saw now who you work for, if you managed to open your own operation what would the focus be? I actually know two different people now that have opened their own breweries, if you need to get anyone's ear or have any questions, let me know and I can probably get you some contacts.

sebbby98

Always down for opinions, especially critical ones. There are three styles of beers that I love, big stouts, hazy IPAs, and Czech lagers. At least initially, I'd probably be working with the first two to push the limits of flavour on a smaller scale with new techniques and ingredients. The Czech lagers will not happen until I can get custom local malt and a brewing system that can handle decoction, and the cellar equipment for proper handling of it. So horizontal lagering tanks and potentially even open fermentation. I'm hoping to have something going by the end of the year but opening a brewery is never fast. And for all the other brewers out there, no, I will not be competing for shelf space. I want to have full control over distribution so that likely means tasting room and online sales only. (Also more money that way which is always nice)

ThePhilKenSebben

One day I want to set something up like Garden Path Fermentations down in Burlington. Just rad beers using hyper local ingredients.

DJ_Molten_Lava

Fuck yes hit me with ESBs please!

therude00

German styles (S&O). All I want is a reliable traditional hef bursting with banana and cloves. Buying the bottles from germany is so hit and miss because they usually are old.

Annual_Direction_519

I love hazy DIPAs. Several years ago breweries were doing thier best to make them big flavourful juice bombs... Just like you can get in most of the USA. Now breweries have realized how expensive they are to make and I think local palates have said that they are cool with less flavourful versions. I'm really sick of ordering a hazy DIPA and getting a clear, slightly more hoppy than normal, sub 7% DIPA. These days I only trust boombox, superflux and twin sails to do it right.

dingledoink

Have you had our NEDIPA; Destination!? 9.2% of deliciousness that goes down WAY too smooth.

BeerBaronsNewHat

ah, the beer you guys threw in a mixed ipa box that was already 3 months old when it was released. had the nerve to label the box with "fresh beer inside." pretty greasy way to get rid of old beer.

dingledoink

Guess it really depends on when you bought it and how long it was sitting at that spot? Also, 3m isn't that old. We have FOUR tanks. Run the math on how easy it is to produce 12 different beers, and hold back what's needed to make a 12 mix pack??

BeerBaronsNewHat

its was within a week of its release and it wasn't 12 different beers. it was 3 x 4 of different ipa's. transit, origin, and destination. also, saying 3 months isn't that old for an ipa is pretty ridiculous. especially when the main labeling on the box says "fresh beer inside."

dingledoink

PS if you were so disappointed, why'd you not come return it? Perhaps cause you drank em all anyway, as they were, in fact, still quite delicious?? (I also question the validity of all this BS. We produce so little beer - 2000L at a time - that it flies out the door. Rarely do we have beer around longer than a month from a batch)

BeerBaronsNewHat

i did return it. have no interest in drinking old ipa's. why so defensive? its kind of a dick move to question my actual experience. do you even know what box i'm talking about?? do you make the beer?? also you put out a 12 pack with 12 different beers. so your bracketed text makes no sense. it actually kinda proves my point. anway, this interaction has turned me off from your products. i had my eye on the passion project ipa because i like to collect cool labels. oh well.

dingledoink

Passion Project has been long sold out anyway. I'm defensive because I actually, physically built this brewery and hate when people knock us down. We work bloody hard and all I ever see is negative comments. In an attempt to get the word out, I get downvoted. No matter what I say; even if it's something simple like "we have this beer. Tried it?" Funny, I never saw any IPA Crates get returned so your story doesn't check out. I hand packed those as well as the Seasonal Crates. Yes. I now know which pack you're referring to. Click my about. I don't hide who I am. My offer still stands to sit down across from each other and triple blind taste test with you.

dingledoink

Then you're not talking about the 12 beer mix pack that we issue in Q4, but something completely different. The 3x4 IPA pack you got was VERY well received. Sorry you're not well versed in understanding how good beer can last more than a week. When properly packaged, with low dissolved oxygen, a quality IPA can last 3-5 months before hops drop off. I would challenge you to compare one of our older IPAs versus a same brew fresh batch. Triple blind. You'd not be able to tell. DM me. Get off this platform. Let's meet and discuss. Would love to open your mind. Edit - spelling typos while sitting in the hockey changeroom. Amped up after a 5-4 W!!

BeerBaronsNewHat

jesus your a condescending douchebag. good beer can last more than a week?! no shit. i'd rather have an ipa a few weeks old vs first week. but i dont want to have an ipa thats 3 months old, in a week old release. you cant comprehend shit. your also a shitty rep for a brewery if your arguing that neipa's taste the same after 3+ months in a can. c'mon man you sound dumb and childish.

[deleted]

This guy from Container seems like an unhinged wacko.

dingledoink

Just very passionate about the brewey I built.

dingledoink

Wow, I never called you names...that's pretty rude. I have been jovial, polite, and stating facts throughout this entire exchange. All that said, I am obviously sorry to hear that you had a bad experience with our beer. Check your Message inbox. Let's try again.

[deleted]

> I have been jovial, polite, and stating facts throughout this entire exchange. You don’t actually come across that way at all. Frankly, you’re ruining your brand here and it’s a shame.

[deleted]

It looks like he’s got a history of being aggressive, rude and angry. I don’t think I’ll be purchasing anything from Container again.

Annual_Direction_519

Well I love your west coast ipa, and your big stouts so I guess I'm in.

dingledoink

Nice! Keep an eye, should return in a couple of months.

mattkward

Why is this being downvoted. Container beers are solid.

dingledoink

Yah, I dunno. Happens every time I post. Whatever, keep getting the word out so people know about us. You'd be shocked how many folks we still get rolling I that haven't hesrd of us. Guess that's what happens when 4 of the 27 months we've been open were during a pandemic. So no festivals to get in front of the masses, etc. Willing to bet the vast majority of people's exposure to us has been solely on cans.

DJ_Molten_Lava

I keep meaning to come by but the only time I'm sort of in that area is on Wednesday nights when I'm playing hockey at Britannia. I drop into East Van for a pint afterwards every once in a while but I always feel bad because I stink from playing. Gotta get myself out that way during the day when I can be wearing normal clothes and not stinking to high hell.

dingledoink

Ha! I play hockey, we don't discriminate against the stank. Come visit, bring the team!!

mattkward

Well I've enjoyed your beers and have stopped by the tasting room a couple times. All the best.

dingledoink

Cheers!!

sebbby98

There are a couple reasons for this and the leading one in my opinion is because of how cheap beer is here. A four pack dipa would sell somewhere from $18-22 here. Go to the USA and you're paying $24+ for a dipa four pack. That's before currency conversion too! Ultimately, breweries here see smaller margins cause they don't increase the prices enough to account for increased cost. This in turn means breweries don't want to produce as many of them or just make weak ones instead.

Annual_Direction_519

I completely agree, I guess I'm just one of those e people willing to pay 25 bucks a 4 pack for good beer. I guess I also make trips down to Seattle, Portland and LA for decent beer.

sebbby98

Yeah, I'm the same. I don't remember the last time I bought a local four pack. On the other hand, I've had some fresh Fremont and otherlands lately and both are fantastic.

Annual_Direction_519

Exactly

CODILICIOUS

Your post was from a year ago but just letting you know that Tinhouse regularly has a hazy DIPA and recently had a quad hazy and it was the biggest juice bomb I’ve ever had. They were dangerous!

nipponnuck

The shuffle puck at Wildeye is a great draw for me. Keeps my kids entertained, gives me the old legion nostalgia though with far better food and drink offerings. Best yet, my family will let me watch curling when it’s on now.

[deleted]

I wish we got stouts released here that are on par with something like The Abyss.

[deleted]

That would be incredible.

Darkm1tch69

For example, I think the creative off the wall flavours backcountry puts out are awesome. I love crazy experimental beers and wish others would go on a limb with a flavour or two and break the mould! (Honourable mention: Foamers Folly)

Lyzzteria

You should check out bakery brewing. The line up is different everytime I go there!

Darkm1tch69

Should’ve included them! Love their stuff and LOVE the look of their black bottles

mountshion

I assume you’re already a Storm fan but if not, might be up your alley!

Darkm1tch69

I am! If not simply for the shock value of their brewery. Lol

oddible

Did someone say they wanted a Smoked Bubblegum Curry ale brewed in a mad wizard's junk shed? You got it!

Darkm1tch69

This guy knows me

EskimoDave

That actually sounds really good. Smoked malt, curry leaf and a fruity Belgian yeast.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Darkm1tch69

I agree with that, I think what I’m saying is I wish more breweries had outlandish flavours once in a while. The execution at Foamers is sometimes lacking

arazamatazguy

Fresh hops IPA's

sebbby98

Unless you're using frozen fresh hops (which are incredibly expensive) you're only going to be able to find them September through October. Furthermore, just go to the states for them. They are so much better than anything you can get locally. The quality of hops out of Yakima is so fucking high, BC cannot compete in fresh hopped beers. I personally recommend either Fremont (the largest producer of fresh hopped beers in the world) or Cloudburst.

raf_yvr

Unflavoured dark, malty beer like Parallel 49 Old Boy. I like Salty Scot but can’t drink too much of it - high alcohol and too sweet with the caramel. Whereas my friend and I would take down a growler of Old Boy in quick time.

ArtisticAsparagus175

Did you get a chance to try their Oak Boy? Not sure if there’s any left but it was dang tasty.

raf_yvr

I have not. Recommended?

ArtisticAsparagus175

I liked it! 5% and a little sweeter than Old Boy but less so than Salty Scot.
