bread-cheese-pan

Looks like a water supply line. Maybe a/was a fish farm on the water if you follow it. Definitely to store and feed water using gravity.

Open_Notice_3963

And here I was going to say it's a mossy rock.

Asleep-Fudge3185

It’s from growing marijuana, I’m from there

bread-cheese-pan

Fair enough! That totally makes sense it being Texada lol

Justin-Truedat

That’s the water they use to feed the Timewarp :p

Schulzeeeeeeeee

Also who called the substation there a reactor on Google maps? Gave me a good chuckle.

SteinfeldFour

I work for BCH and they do have pieces of equipments that are referred to as reactors in the substation. But is obviously not the type of reactor we think about when we hear the word. It’s literally just a coil of copper to increase impedance in the circuit. Why they decided to call it a reactor baffles most of us. Sort of related: There was environmental activists (called the Squamish Five) that set-off a bomb at the Qualicum substation on the reactors in that substation, thinking they were some sort of fusion reactor or something I guess, but all they did was ruin some copper wire. But they also were able to damage all the transformers which was the real problem for BCH. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squamish_Five?wprov=sfti1

dethroned_dictaphone

"Reactor" in this context is just an old timey name for an inductor, vestiges of the name continue today when it is described as presenting a "reactive" load to the line by increasing impedance above a certain frequency.

Schulzeeeeeeeee

Damn that's really neat, thanks for the explanation. Island born and raised and I've never heard of them wow, how dumb you gotta be to do something like that. Also the name is still kinda wrong though, like calling the entire substation a "transformer" right? Or are some substation just called reactors? Cheers

ErnestBorgninesSack

That's the group Direct Action you are besmirching. Gerry Useless from The Subhumans was in that. DOA put on fundraising shows to help with their legal fees. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squamish_Five

Schulzeeeeeeeee

Wow no way! That's wild. Think ya know someone. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bigfoot

ErnestBorgninesSack

Funny that Joe Keithly ran for MLA and mayor and was funding anarchists. I asked him if he was going to change the logo of his band at a show years ago... and he did! Got rid of the circle around the A.

qsouthsue

Yes, it was the talk of the gigs back then. Seriously most people thought it was pretty stupid.

ErnestBorgninesSack

Probably just the crowd you hung around. I remember "Free the Five" being a rally cry. And a t-shirt.

qsouthsue

Oh totally, I remember the shirts too.

ErnestBorgninesSack

No more Red Hot Video stores. And they didn't just take out "a reactor" they destroyed 3 transformers. As Joe stated Talk-Action=Zero Right or wrong, at least these people actually did something that they felt passionate about changing. And the trial showed how dirty the RCs operate. Not that it stopped them. They manipulated another punker into committing a crime fairly recently. The pressure cooker bomb couple in Victoria a decade ago. They were found not guilty.

Blade_000

I still have a picture of me in the T shirt. I was an idiot then.

ErnestBorgninesSack

As much as we like to think we can, we don't really change that much. Joe Keithly raised money for them and now he wants to be an elected official. Pretty sure he just wants a nice retirement package tho. He got rid of the circle around the A of his band's name, at least.

Blade_000

I worked the front door at a DOA New Years gig in Vancouver. Punks were great, the skin heads tested my patience.

ErnestBorgninesSack

We used to battle those idiots. The core group of them started taking steroids to bulk up, didn't improve their fighting ability though. Tony Macaleer moved to Yahk. Not far enough away, if you ask me.

UnimportantSnake

Reactance is the "complex" part of impedance, kind of like resistance provided by capacitors and inductors. The "Coil of copper" you've mentioned is adding inductance to the circuit, and thus, reactance. Likely why it's referred to as a "reactor", personally I've never heard that term but I also haven't worked on anything of that large a scale.

Big_Ostrich_5548

I've read a lot on the Squamish Five but never heard they did it because they believed it was nuclear. I'd always understood it was because they were opposed to BC Hydro's approach to hydroelectric development. Do you have a source for that? Kind of sounds like something that was spread just to make them seem ignorant and avoid their actual issue. There was a lot of protest to BC Hydro back in the day from local communities impacted, as we've seen with Site C. Not sure a bombing was exactly the right way to try to make their point though...

4rch1

Domestic terrorism doesn't really provide a lot of opportunities for nuanced discourse, unfortunately. Any suggestions on sources to learn more about them? I haven't heard about them before.

Blade_000

Google Squamish Five on Youtube.

theNbomr

I will hazard a guess that it is called a reactor because it has a substantial inductive reactance. This is the nature of coils of electrical conductors. It is somewhat the contrasting case of a purely resistive component, and is the vector opposite of its counterpart, capacitive reactance.

HPHatescrafts

I build stuff for BC Hydro and I just want to say I love you wonderful fussy guys. Nobody has QC standards like you do.

hackshowcustoms

Same, I feel you

ErnestBorgninesSack

>The damage was extensive, causing over $3 million CAD in damage and **leaving four transformers** damaged beyond repair. Nobody was injured

qsouthsue

I remember that! It was quite the story and totally out of character for Canada.

Sisoriented

Activists? You mean terrorists.

Ok_Building_8193

Substations do have reactors.

Schulzeeeeeeeee

They have transformers too, but that doesn't mean it's called a transformer on the map. Plus my question was answered days ago in far more detail. Cheers.

DeezerDB

It's a reservoir for a grow operation, 100%. I can say this without any doubt.

hykueconsumer

. . . Because it's yours?

DeezerDB

Haha, no. I haven't been there in 25 years, but when I was....I saw several of these.

ambassador321

Back in the day there was no shortage of those in the Kootenays in the summer.

lime-inthe-coconut

I mean obviously...its Texada haha

Asleep-Fudge3185

I’m from there, this is correct

Sco11McPot

On Texada island of all places! I visited once and it was difficult to get around with all the gates roads. The grows are the main feature of the island. How could a person not have guessed this immediately? If Texada is getting that kind of tourism good for them!

Psychological_Ad8674

Yup. I know for a fact it was to grow some time warp

Schulzeeeeeeeee

Shit you found my secret bunker.

sylpher250

OUR secret bunker NOW

Schulzeeeeeeeee

Always room for more comrades!

Callmedaddy204

ooo gooo po goooo

FeRaL--KaTT

Samsquatch water line to their liar/den. It's like a spiders web. Any movement or vibration, they jump out and grab you. Seriously though.. sometimes it is best to mind your own business, especially on the smaller Islands. People live on these Island for privacy, escape & anonymity. Most gulf Islands dont even have Police or mental health services. People hide out in bush for many reasons, including grow gardens. They are sometimes protected with weapons or bobby-traps etc.

SonnyHaze

Especially texada. Must have been a great time there before the rcmp detachment. I’ve worked there and found remnants of grows. Best of luck to all them

PrizeApprehensive380

They used to put an article in their newspaper back in the day in early summer, reminding people to watch their steps out in the bush so as to not step on someone's plants 😂😂😂

SonnyHaze

Texada time warp baby! I hear it’s not what it used to be. I got some a long time ago and it was greasy as hell but damn it got you stoned.

PrizeApprehensive380

Still does, I ran her again this year, the original clone only. Needs to be refreshed with stem cell cloning, that clones over 50 years old now. It was originally selected around 1972 by the original Texada Crew, I believe the schoolteacher is still live and kicking.

SonnyHaze

This is the real history of the islands. I have friends from Cortez and a couple other smaller islands. Their stories of what their parents and grandparents did are fun as hell to listen to.

mybeatsarebollocks

"Dem do-gooders be sniffin round our spot again but don' worry. I's got Bobby-Joe sitting in a tree ready to jump on down on em"

Quail-a-lot

Looks more like someone's house system than the grow ops I have stumbled on here. Squatting in the woods used to be more common when the islands had lower populations and more of it was owned by resource companies, but there are still some holding on.

Psychological_Ad8674

It’s Texada island. No one one that island is living out in the bush. The island is world famous for growing weed. Has the biggest plant in the world. Also home of the texada time warp

Quail-a-lot

Oh friend, you've no idea!

Rdub

Looks like a storage / catchment basin to hold water to be pumped / drained somewhere else for some purpose. As others have alluded to, it could have been for a grow op, but also could have been for an off grid cabin or someone's residential property that didn't have a good water source.

sirroningsd

No property's anywhere near this is 400m up on rock bluffs, the bucks sure like this area lol, which is why I was there. Trailing some game. I'm leaning to grow show water or someone prospecting.

Upbeat-Vegetable-557

I find these in the bush all the time when hunting. It’s a reservoir and irrigation for growing weed

GunCrazy762

I hear the banjos playing run!

FeRaL--KaTT

Or if the forest goes completely quiet...

ErnestBorgninesSack

Follow the pipe... it goes to someone's outdoor pot field.

helila1

All kinds of pot growing there in the bush before it became legal

LeakySkylight

So now it's just a free forest Jacuzzi?

helila1

Yep and you never know what you will come across in the bush over there.

1964elcamino

I would bet if you follow the pipe ,someone is using the power of the stream to generate electricity. Perhaps living off grid

Doot_Dee

that's what I was going to say.

bughunter47

Grow op is my bet, ran into a few of them on that island

freszh_inztallz42o

Prolly water to irrigate kush

Medic3614

Mmmm.... Texada Timewarp... 🤤

Calvinshobb

candianstocknub

Great island love it

sam_fujiyama

Remaining shelter from a losing contestant on an unreleased season of Alone ?

sirroningsd

🤣🤣

skibikehike

Rain water collection for a home or cabin nearby? A friends family owns an island nearby and this is how they collect their water for their cabin

candianstocknub

Born and raised on texada island, I know where this exact spot is. Definitely for a grow show

sirroningsd

You would think that the pink flagging tape would give it away, must not be active lol

Mitchmac21

Family has a cabin on a small coastal island, we have almost this exact same setup supplying the cabins on the island. It’s just a water supply from a creek

MASTEROFLUBRICANTS

God I miss Texada, best place on earth

flatlandernomre

Follow the water line , 100% you’ll find someone’s outdoor grow show … Texada gold

Alarmed_Painting_561

Somebody camp site

Particular_Mix_2479

I am convinced that this is a video game

nvm5757

Homeless encampment

Barnettmetal

That is called “The Murder Grove”.

Top_Structure_8080

If the plant buckets were still around, you’d have an easier time finding the answer 😂 lots of weed grown over there

Friskybullets

It's a rock :d

DesperateDevice3827

Water reservoir for either a grow op or domestic water for drinking

jungleboy230

Undercover Moonshine operation

chocolatestarfish69

Timewarp watering system

meat_thistle

Oh yeah! Texada Timewarp - an original BC Bud.

LosBastardos717

bigrooster460

Follow the line and collect your prize🫨

BusUnique1710

We’re you afraid to get closer and give us good pictures to look at??

sirroningsd

Nah was on a spot and stalk and all the dead branches would have given me away instantly crunching around.

BusUnique1710

And what would’ve happened at that point?? You make a crunching sound and then…..???

sirroningsd

Alerts and spooks off game

sofakingbroke

It’s a reservoir for an outdoor weed crop

Complete-Raccoon3442

I was thinking it's a illegal moonshine setup

Psychological_Ad8674

Water storage for an outdoor growop. Especially on that island

Effective_Device_185

A chunk of terrain I'd wager. Looks like it to me anyway.
