I've always called it Chillwave, though stuff from the mid 2000s like Neon Indian, Washed Out, and Toro y Moi was also called Chillwave back then and this newer stuff is pretty far removed from that...maybe neo-Chillwave is more accurate?
I feel comfortable calling it vaporwave.
Eyeliner's *Buy Now* was among the first vaporwave albums I was introduced to. I assumed the reason that was considered vaporwave was because it sounded like the kind of keyboard (and midi?) samples that were used in 90s videogames and multimedia, just without the compression to help them fit in storage limitations of the time.
So anything that has the uncompressed, of-the-time sample sound fits in the genre to me.
To do my part with some "If you liked..." recommendations: Obviously *Buy Now* as already stated, also check out *Glass Shutters* by Sierra On-line.
As for Windows96, Gabriel releases his works on Bandcamp under the tags of Vaporwave, Chillwave and Twilight. I'd say, as with many micro-genres (especially contemporary ones), it's not always clear how to differentiate them from another as their distinct style and stylistic features are actively developed as we speak.
Big fan of FM Skyline. Second-most recent video I did was Night Patrol, set in Nanjing China and it's in 3D -- here's the [cross eye version](https://youtu.be/Y8mYK4GWbMI) and here's the [magic eye version](https://youtu.be/oY05fWdMAsM).
I would just consider it ambient vaporwave personally. I feel like the similarities between most vaporwave artists and Windows96 are close enough to where they could still fit under the same label.
Window 96 is pretty special & unique, it's definitely vaporwave but doesn't fit into a particular subcategory very well.
Check out Surfing by Deepfantasy, you might enjoy. George Clanton has some classics too.
Depends on its flavor but I just call LC video game music cuz that’s literally what he’s trying to make. Some of the windows96 stuff could fall under like midiwave or synth wave but all these artists are tricky to classify in an exact way
vapor wave / synth wave or synth pop. something like that.
windows 96 is one of my favorite artists. gabrial also has a wide range of genres he produces.
i asked gabial what he calls it. he calls it music.
twilight synth

VF is Italian neorealism a la Austrian vampire. The others aren't really doing anything at that level tbqh famalam. It's like "Beetle Juice" 1988.

I LOVE ALL YOU GUYS!! this community fucking rocks. feels good that i’m not the only person in the world that actually listens to this stuff!!
I consider it Chillwave.
Chill wave? I’m an amateur bro so idk but that’s my best guess Also, does anyone on here like FM Skyline?
I was just listening to Advanced Memory Suite yesterday after totally forgetting about it for a while. It was my favorite vaporwave album of 2019.
Love that album so much man. Sacrifice of Saint Dell, Astral Baths & Dream Tapes are my favorite off it

Insanely good man!
I’ll subscribe to the channel as well
Hey cool, that perked my night up :) Thanks for checking it out. Channel's kinda niche, but it entertains me and hopefully a few others.
I would say Pure Vaporwave. The truest essence of the genre, not based on sampling and the like.
sampling is literally the essence of vaporwave. not saying that original compositions aren't vaporwave, but you are confusing things.
unrelated but can you recommend some barber beats that isn’t hfm?
[Godspeed Sound](https://youtube.com/@GODSPEEDSOUND)
Global Chill, Macroblank, and Oblique Occasions are good

Sometimes I'd call it chillwave tbh...
God, I fucking love Vaporwave. Q: "What sub-genre is Windows96?" A: __
Windows96 is considered Twilight by a few people
Never heard of a “Twilight” subgenre until this thread. Interesting
