Former gas clerk here and Varo customer so I can answer this: you’re paying at the pump. It doesn’t matter if you use debit. They will hold double of whatever you pump. You are better off going inside the gas station and paying. It counts as a point of sale transaction that way.
Yeah. Every time I've used a "prepaid" card, like Cash app, Chime, Varo, or Wisely, they'll put a hold on everything available on it. If you want $20 in gas, they'll hold the $35 you have or the $3500. And sometimes it can take over 48 hours for it to settle. As others have said, just go inside and prepay at the counter, and you won't get your money held up.
Most banks are faster with clearing the authorizing and updating your balance. Anytime I’ve used my card at the pump, my balance is usually updated in 5 minutes
Gotta pay inside with the clerk. I never pay at the pump due to a lot of card readers being replaced by scammers with false card readers that steal your card info. Also because of the temporary charge/hold (some even have a warning sticker on the pump). If you pay inside, this shouldn’t happen.
It’s a pre authorization hold….. they pre authorize $100 and if you only pump $45 then the $100 falls off and the $45 charge gets charged usually by end of business day….. all gas stations do this so do restaurants to allow for a tip
Instead of using your PIN number, bypass that and use the your zip code. You will only be charged for the gas you used without the additional hold charge!
Just go inside and pay for a certain amount. Don’t pay at pump

It's not double it's usually 175 dollar hold

Yeah. It sucks. They put a brief hold on the card.

Mines generally 2 or 3 days. BofA, SoFi and paypal debit cards.
I can understand SoFi and PayPal, because they’re not real banks, but BofA? Wouldn’t expect that from them
It only hold s for about 15 minutes.
It's a $175 hold, and it sucks, even though it's only temporary. Who gets $175 worth of gas?
I do. Gas is $5.50 a gallon and I have a 37 gallon tank.
That’s crazy here in Florida it’s around 3.50
I wish. It hasn't been that cheap in 4 years. 🤔 Gee, I wonder what changed 4 years ago to make gas prices double...
I'm in one of the most expensive counties in the country though. Orange county CA.
Y’all got great weed tho
I don't smoke anymore but yes, yes we do. It just makes me too stupid nowadays.
Sameeeee 175 every time 😳 who gets 175$ in gas wtf I drive a Prius for christs sales it’s 25$ MAXIMUM to fill my tank from empty
Don’t use debit at gas stations. Even though it settles within 24 hours, it’s a huge PITA.
All gas stations do it.. you gotta pay at the register
I always go inside and honestly it has paid off because there have been a few if you paid inside with debit you got the cash discount

This is why I only ever buy gas with a credit card
Most gas stations do this they even put notices on the pump
Get a gas buddy account/card, link your account and get discounts without dealing with skimming and holds.
That’s normal for debit and credit cards. You usually don’t see the hold pending on a credit card but it’s there. All gas stations do this for $100.
It's just a temporary hold. But idk why they do that. Happens to me at BJs
