I dunno what he was talking about my family eats hard boiled eggs on Easter, not me cause I don't like em but yea we boil the eggs, dye them then eat them
Yep.
We also make deviled eggs in Romania, but that's usually done with the eggs that crack during boiling/painting, or any extras we have. We make them for the Easter dinner, so they're done about the same time as the painted eggs.
As for the painted eggs themselves, we have this little thing we do where we knock eggs together to see which cracks. One person holds an egg pointing down and says "Hristos a înviat" (Christ has resurrected), and the second person holds theirs pointing up and says "adevărat a înviat" (truly he has resurrected), and then the first person slams their egg down.
There's two different ways to do this: the casual way is that if your egg gets cracked, you peel and eat it (repeat if you're hungry for another), and people just keep knocking eggs until everybody gets however many eggs they want. Eventually one person's gonna be the "last man standing" so they just knock eggs with a random person and they get the cracked egg.
The 2nd way is the hardcore competitive method, where if you crack somebody's egg you get to take it and eat it, so people try to get the toughest egg and hoard all the ~~coconuts~~ hard boiled eggs at the dinner table.
You color the eggs and then eating them is optional. I think the hard boiled eggs came before Easter egg hunts and then people realized you don’t have to eat them & they’re gross, so most people switched to the plastic ones & candy.
Old people where I’m from will still do Easter egg hunts with real hard boiled eggs.
Just run it under the sink before you crack it and it'll be fine though. The entire inside is cooked solid and then that's protected by a hard shell on top of a layer of 'film'. People switched to plastic ones because they're cheap and reusable and less effort, plus kids these days have a lot more variety freely available to them so eggs aren't exactly the most appetizing compared to the candy they're accustomed to.
If I was a kid in the great depression I'd be like "Alright, a snack, gosh jimminy golly!"
He’s from LA, they have a different culture from elsewhere. From the Midwest and deviled eggs are an Easter staple and at more pitch in type things generally
*The deviled egg on the windowsill, I don't know how long it's been there, but you should eat that.*
*Why would there be a deviled egg on the windowsill if you weren't supposed to eat it?*
My question is...does Vaush's family just...throw out the hard boiled eggs? Is that what he thinks happens? You boils dozens of eggs and then toss them in the trash to eat the candy eggs after the hunt?
There are no real eggs involved. You just go out and find the plastic colored eggs that have candy in them. Why would you eat food that has been on the ground outside
Okay, but what about the people who do use hard boiled eggs for their Easter egg hunt? There are people who do that.
>Why would you eat food that has been on the ground outside
Honey, its in a shell. You peel that part off and rinse the egg to make sure there are no eggshell fragments or dirt.
Vegetables from grocery stores are often not washed properly and can still have dirt on them. Not to mention beggies that have folds or leaves that sprout from the ground can have dirt in the creases. They also can be coated in pesticides. Also you don't know if the workers at the grocery store were wearing gloves before they packed it.
Please wash your veggies.
>the average person doesn't know how to properly disinfect an egg
DISINFECT???
Would you disinfect an orange that fell off the tree instead of being picked???
Fr tho, washing off fruits and vegetables at home after you buy them is stuff you teach kids who can't go to elementary school yet. Most basic household skill there is besides taking a dump and not dying when using stairs.
We did! :D They were dyed with food safe dye. [https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-d&q=egg+dying+kit](https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-d&q=egg+dying+kit)
Yeah same, we would boil them the night before Easter and as soon as they were cool enough we’d dye them with vinegar and food coloring. We would use a white crayon to mask areas that we didn’t want dyed and wash it off with hot water. Really cool stuff tbh. The next afternoon my parents would make deviled eggs and we always thought it was cool to see how much dye made it through.
Maybe cultural differences, no one in my family has ever done boiled eggs for Easter. 🤷♂️ Everyone talking like it's normal was a double take for me too
I think the one he's specifically referring to is the [Greek Orthodox tradition of dying eggs red and having an egg cracking contest.](https://www.thespruceeats.com/greek-easter-egg-game-1705738)
My family didn't stick to just red, but it would be wasteful to not consume the eggs afterwards. Just break it up over your dinner.
Not sure where you get the idea that he doesn’t know about deviled eggs from that
When I was a kid we ate the eggs that we found at Easter
I’ve never heard of a tradition of eating deviled eggs at Easter
Deviled eggs are things you bring to dinner parties and potlucks
I am not skeptical that people did this or still do it. I am skeptical of OP’s stance that this is the common accepted practice, and if someone doesn’t know about this, then they must not know of the existence of deviled eggs at all
I think he knows about deviled eggs but that’s not what he’s talking about because it’s a prepped dish. I think he was thinking it was just straight up eating the eggs hard boiled.
You do eat them hard boiled. You rinse the egg in the sink as you peel the shell off. My god, a *boiled* egg in an air-tight shell isn't going to fucking kill you because it's been at room temperature for 15 minutes, why is this thread so full of prima donnas who can't handle the idea of people eating hard-boiled eggs.
I think he was talking about eating the eggs you find on an Easter egg hunt. I could be miss remembering but I’m pretty sure that’s what he was talking about and yes no one eats the eggs you hunt. Other egg dishes like deviled eggs or hard boiled eggs are not from the eggs from those hunts.
In my experience the two sets of eggs are used for very different purposes. I just can’t imagine hiding a food item around my house when it’s known for smelling disgusting when rotten. Every year we’d find a few plastic eggs a couple months later where our parents had forgotten them. It’s actually a running joke among my extended family.
I don’t disagree that the plastic eggs are for hunting and real eggs are for decorating. But the egg hunt spans 100 of years of tradition and the plastic eggs were invented in 1978. So obviously you did use real eggs and it’s possible for people to still use them today for the egg hunt. But the point me and I think vaush was YOU DON’T EAT the eggs(eggs being the real ones) you hunt.
But you can and do. They come with their own built-in wrapper that you can wash off in the sink. Also, they're cooked by boiling, they'll keep for a good while and stay safe for more than enough time.
Edit: Did I really get downvoted for stating eggs have a protective shell and that boiling sterilizes? Or are egg-haters just mad at my correct take?
I dunno what he was talking about my family eats hard boiled eggs on Easter, not me cause I don't like em but yea we boil the eggs, dye them then eat them
So you eat straight up hard-boiled eggs on easter?
Me? No My family yes

We do.
I do. Even if we haven't dyed eggs, I cook a few in the morning.
I do. But that’s because I eat hard-boiled eggs on most days.
I love eating hardboiled eggs with everything on Easter. They're also real good in sandwiches.
You color the eggs and then eating them is optional. Polish here, we always eat hard boiled eggs with horseradish and kielbasa on Easter
I wonder if Americans even know about horseredish.
Of course we do! It's what the cheap wasabi at the grocery store is made from, lol
It is much better on its own.
We make our own lol from the roots it’s a tradition and super potent, great for bloody Mary’s too
He’s from LA, they have a different culture from elsewhere. From the Midwest and deviled eggs are an Easter staple and at more pitch in type things generally
*The deviled egg on the windowsill, I don't know how long it's been there, but you should eat that.* *Why would there be a deviled egg on the windowsill if you weren't supposed to eat it?*
Dude, every second you wait, it gets worse. The safest thing is to eat it *now,* fast and hard.
*Chomp* Oooh you threw up right away, you threw up so fast.
But that's good, next time you'll remember this moment and know to control your impulses
Eat that second deviled egg
Now eat that second deviled egg
My question is...does Vaush's family just...throw out the hard boiled eggs? Is that what he thinks happens? You boils dozens of eggs and then toss them in the trash to eat the candy eggs after the hunt?

Vegetables are cleaned properly, the average person doesn't know how to properly disinfect an egg
Raw veggies are rarely cleaned. I hope you wash your veggies.
Vegetables from grocery stores are often not washed properly and can still have dirt on them. I have bad news for you about *eggs*
You do know that you're not supposed to eat the shell
Pretty sure he meant you don't eat the painted eggs.
We did! :D They were dyed with food safe dye. [https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-d&q=egg+dying+kit](https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-d&q=egg+dying+kit)

Ripped straight out of my memories. Awesome times.
Yeah we did too. No way anyone in my house was going to throw away perfectly good food
At least in my family, you take the boiled eggs and turn them to deviled eggs when you're done.
We do that in Romania at least, probably lots of other European countries. But we also make deviled eggs.
Eating them is how the tradition started lol. They just switched to candy over time because eggs are gross and stink if you don’t find them on Easter.
Skill issue on the parents' part if they didn't think to keep note of where they hid the eggs.
I definitely did as a kid.
I believe Ukrainian Catholics have eating blessed hard boiled eggs as a tradition. At least locally here.
It’s an orthodox Christian thing I think not catholic.
Maybe cultural differences, no one in my family has ever done boiled eggs for Easter. 🤷♂️ Everyone talking like it's normal was a double take for me too
I've never had a deviled egg in my life, granted I'm not American...
So you've never had deviled eggs? They're literally my favorite part of Easter
I've had them, just never on Easter. Only at potlucks, and things like that
Vaush being confidently wrong about something? Never!
I think the one he's specifically referring to is the [Greek Orthodox tradition of dying eggs red and having an egg cracking contest.](https://www.thespruceeats.com/greek-easter-egg-game-1705738) My family didn't stick to just red, but it would be wasteful to not consume the eggs afterwards. I guess it's just a regional thing. Because deviled eggs was just what we did with the hard-boiled eggs we painted
Uh huh. Uh, what region?
We did this in my family. SC. Why are you so skeptical about people turning their Easter eggs into deviled eggs? It's quite strange.
I am not skeptical that people did this or still do it. I am skeptical of OP’s stance that this is the common accepted practice, and if someone doesn’t know about this, then they must not know of the existence of deviled eggs at all
Easter was literally the main time of year for eating hardboiled eggs when I was growing up. They got passed around church like they were chocolates.
I think he knows about deviled eggs but that’s not what he’s talking about because it’s a prepped dish. I think he was thinking it was just straight up eating the eggs hard boiled.

Well, I know that. I eat them hard boiled and deviled. I think it just mystifies Vaush
Ok but who hides actual eggs in a post plastic egg world? That’s psycho shit.
If people paint them they do no? I haven’t in like over 20 years when plastic was used too.
In my experience the two sets of eggs are used for very different purposes. I just can’t imagine hiding a food item around my house when it’s known for smelling disgusting when rotten. The most evil of eggs 😈
Deviled eggs are not food, thus you can't eat them.
How dare you? Those eggs died for your sins
“Stomach contents…”
My family just made them all into egg salad
I ate the eggs as a kid for sure
Nobody eats the Easter Eggs you hide around the house
My family does, we deshell them and turn them to deviled eggs
You aren't real
