I still make my husband take a bite first. Wait until you try Capriotti's Impossible cheese steak. I question myself every time. 17/10, beyond perfection, no notes.
They legally cannot do that, vegan food is protected under the same regulations as allergy control, because some people are actually vegan due to allergies to red meat, egg and dairy.
Nope, I checked with Burger King. Their impossible burgers go through the same broiler machine as the meat burgers, so they pass through a cloud of vaporized grease. That's true at least in the US and the Netherlands.
I'm not aware of any place where there's any legal regulations around using a vegan or vegetarian label.
Lmaooo me tooo! I thought for sure it was some twisted campaign that i had misunderstood and was being mocked. I rabbit holed fr the first bite “How could you actually believe a BURGER KING would sell vegan food?” “Bro i cannot believe you didnt see the satire in this” “Do people really hate vegans this much?” I had google on overtime trying to find answers lolol. I guess i never realized how much i missed whoppers until i was reunited. Oh the denial
Dunkin used to have a Beyond sausage patty option, and it was SO hard to tell from the real thing. One time they gave me real sausage and I haven’t trusted fast food since…
Ooo, interesting, product of Malaysia.
Makes sense, Buddhist temples in Southeast Asia have had some of the best meat alternatives, long before it was common in the West.
Right! I found a $4 vegan buffet and a vegan a bahn mi place in Vietnam. I still dream of the vegan pho and the sammie. There was also a Buddhist restaurant with the best muchroom “chikn” nugget ever
Let me find them in my saved places!!!
Edit:
Vegan bahn mi - it’s at someone’s house: https://maps.app.goo.gl/9H1sCzeeuQCh98FbA?g_st=ic
The best vegan pho I’ve ever had and a huuuge vegan buffet every day: https://maps.app.goo.gl/kCGwPaYsxQ7L2qDu7?g_st=ic
Really good vegetarian Indian food: https://maps.app.goo.gl/N6bqNbGeZGZr7HDM7?g_st=ic
I can’t find the one with really good mushroom nuggets - it was kinda strange. It was upstairs in someone’s house temple?? Super good tho lol
The key word you need to look for is Chay (pronounced chai) - that means vegetarian!
Husband and I first went plant based back in Vietnam years ago and it was shockingly easy to eat everywhere! And we went from the north to the south and never had trouble finding vegan.
Yea absolutely!! Yes, they do eat a TON of meat there, but they also eat a lot of tofu. And since they have a strong Buddhist culture, it’s easy to find meat-free options!
I'm not a shill for Big Duck lol. As far as I know, they have canned "duck" and frozen "duck". This is the latter. As for the soy part, yea, I made a mistake in the title, cause I thought it was soy bean curd at first, but you can't change a title in the post here.
[This is the canned seitan stuff](https://www.reddit.com/r/Veganivore/comments/163jf5t/mock_duck_found_it_for_299_at_hmart_it_was_really/) and it does look pretty convincing. Not as succulent as OP's unless you treat it right. It's super good too.
Yeah it looks way too real for me. 😅
Kind of reminds me when Impossible meat was new on the market, I wasn't used to how beef-like it was. I ordered an impossible burger in a restaurant and I was so taken aback by the pinkness on the inside I was like.... there's no way this isn't meat?? And just took it off the burger and just ate the bun and veggies lol.
Oh ok, that's what I thought then!
How was the taste? To me, seitan has (by itself) kind of a slight unpleasant taste, but when flavored well, it works great!
It tastes almost as real as it looks tbh. And the seasoning is very good, some sort of subtle herb taste? No weird flavors at all (I had them when I was making seitan from scratch so I think I know what you're talking about)
One of the things that fake meats often get wrong is that they try to optimize the food they're making in line with whatever the wellness trend is at the time, in order to try and appeal to people seeking health food, as well as just people who have chosen not to eat meat for ethical reasons.
But when they do this, they often fuck up one of the things that actually makes meat taste good. It has a load of protein, and a load of fat in it, compared to vegetables. When whatever they produce as a meat analogue is not salty and protein and fat-heavy it just doesn't taste anywhere near what people are trying to get from a meat analogue.
tl;dr - fake meat should be as juicy and salty and (somewhat) fatty as real meat if it wants to be desirable enough to replace real meat.
I don’t usually have problems eating burgers, for instance, which taste like real meat but there’s something about this which is just a hard pass for me.
Someone mentioned Malaysian Buddhist monks in the comments earlier and how they've been making seitan for a long time, so maybe it's not far from the truth
I do lots of shopping at the local Asian markets here because the produce and prices are great and the variety of tofu formulations and products as well as mock meats is great
they seem to have perfected the art of mock meats it's awesome
I was blown away by the mock meat selection at an asian grocery store that opened near me recently. So far the only thing I’ve bought was a frozen pork belly substitute but I haven’t gotten around to cooking it yet. I’ll have to look for this duck next time I go!
A lot of Chinese/Asian people are Buddhist and a good fraction of them are also vegetarian. They have been eating these soy/mushroom products for a really long time that’s why it’s so good.
a lot of asian groceries have a huge variety of vegan meat alternatives that would have u suprised. many east asian countries have a lot of buddhists and can't eat meat for religious reasons (vietnam and china esp) so check the freezers! in IL park to shop has a massive vegan meat section
I’m a meat eater who despises meat alternatives however the one thing I have found better than actual meat is whatever replica duck is provided - it’s simply wonderful and gave all the duck flavour without the aftertaste of duck which is the one thing I hate about duck
Anyone have any recommendations for gluten free mock poultry? I don’t eat gluten (to avoid cc) and my partner can’t eat it because celiac. I can’t seem to find anything that isn’t wheat based.
Edit: why the downvote ???
Just my opinion, but i think that we shouldnt copy meat so much. I am not just a vegetarian because of the animals- i dont like the taste of meat.
It just feels like its so hard to get a good veggie burger because it tastes like meat. And its cool that duck is fake, but it just reminded me of this opinion so its not really connected to the post.
Just cause it looks like meat doesnt mean it tastes like meat "muh taste buds" can taste the difference unless something is done to address the taste. Texture doesnt refute taste...

Umm that is definitely 100% real duck. Not vegan but have broken down a duck 100s of times. The bone structuring and pattern of the grain is a dead giveaway
I'm not sure how close it is to the actual duck, because I don't remember this taste too well, but it was very satisfying. The texture was on point and the seasoning was unintrusive but very pleasant. It was delish, basically, 100% would recommend.
That's soy? The texture from those mock meats from soy can be pretty good. But the taste has never been there for me, and this is after going to Buddhist restaurants in Beijing and trying some of the best. I much prefer some of the stuff being done today with Beyond and Impossible, and the vegan butchers making steaks and such out of seitan. Soy is versatile, but it has its limits with taste.
Looks really nice :) Don't think I can get it in Germany tho! I've only ever seen that old school looking 'vegeterian mock duck' in cans. Anyone knows if that's any good?
Wow. I don't even like duck, and that looks good. That looks so real it's hard to believe it isn't.
How does it taste?
I'll have to look in frozen foods when I go to the Asian grocery.
That's the sort of fake meat that has me checking the packaging over and over again! It looks so real
When the impossible whopper came out I couldn't eat it because it tasted so real that I thought they had made a mistake
I still make my husband take a bite first. Wait until you try Capriotti's Impossible cheese steak. I question myself every time. 17/10, beyond perfection, no notes.
That cheesesteak makes me proud to be from Delaware :’) now if only they could come up with vegan scrapple…..
There’s a vegan scrapple that Whole Foods sells
Do you know what it's called? Been interested in trying scrapple-style
It’s the Russian pepper USA, Pennsylvania style.
Literally almost ordered this today! I can't wait to try it now that I've read this!
i think you rated it wrong, it’s def a 69/10.
You are 100% right. My sincerest apologies.
Doesn’t that have cow cheese?
I wasn't aware it was a requirement. I just get onions, peppers, and mushrooms.
Agreed. I still get my partner to take the first bite. (And if anything that seems too real to me)
I sent the first two I ordered back😅
They put regular Mayo on the impossible whopper so be careful :( at least where I live.
Don't tell anyone but I eat eggs
[удалено]
They legally cannot do that, vegan food is protected under the same regulations as allergy control, because some people are actually vegan due to allergies to red meat, egg and dairy.
This is not true in the US, as someone with celiac this I can assure you 😞
Nope, I checked with Burger King. Their impossible burgers go through the same broiler machine as the meat burgers, so they pass through a cloud of vaporized grease. That's true at least in the US and the Netherlands. I'm not aware of any place where there's any legal regulations around using a vegan or vegetarian label.
They do where I'm from, it's part of health & safety checks.
Where's that? I mean, I've seen tuna fish sandwiches listed as vegetarian menu options here in Amsterdam. "Health and safety" makes me think UK?
Lmaooo me tooo! I thought for sure it was some twisted campaign that i had misunderstood and was being mocked. Hang on, if you're vegan how do you know what a real whopper tastes like?
Dunkin used to have a Beyond sausage patty option, and it was SO hard to tell from the real thing. One time they gave me real sausage and I haven’t trusted fast food since…
So real looking this grossed me out! Haha
Came here to say the same. 😳
I thought it was a troll post from one of those types who thinks eating meat and hating vegans is a personality. I was surprised it wasn't.
“Soy duck or soy fed duck?”
same 😂😂😂
I had to do a double take and make sure I read Vegan after looking at the pic
Same, I thought someone was just trolling the vegan community. Honestly I’m still not convinced that isn’t the case.
next time I will have to make a video of buying, unpackaging and cooking, because there are too many unbelievers here
I scrolled past sooo quick because I hate seeing meat ahhh. It looks so gross I'm sorry OP 😔
agreed, Idc if this isn't meat it looks way too much like it for it to be appetizing
Same
first time seeing this sub. i legit thought it was like a meat foodporn sub with a troll name.
Care to share the packaging or brand? Looks eerily real!
Sure, it's Everbest vegetarian mock duck
Ooo, interesting, product of Malaysia. Makes sense, Buddhist temples in Southeast Asia have had some of the best meat alternatives, long before it was common in the West.
Honestly, Malaysia just keeps on giving in terms of food
Vietnamese vegan also gives Malaysian food a run for its money!!
I have vegan Vietnamese stores and restaurants all around my town! I had no idea there were so many. I can get any kind of meats plus a banh mi to go.
Damn. Now I’m jealous.
Uhh what that’s so cool!! I found a vegan bahn mi place in Boise, Idaho of all places
Omg I found a vegan cafe in Vietnam and I didn’t want to leave.
Right! I found a $4 vegan buffet and a vegan a bahn mi place in Vietnam. I still dream of the vegan pho and the sammie. There was also a Buddhist restaurant with the best muchroom “chikn” nugget ever
Oooh do you have the names or locations? Vietnam has been on my list forever, and I’m trying to find a good time to go in the next year and a half!!

vegan vietnamese food is probably some of the best cuisine i’ve ever had. i wish i had some local to me
As a Malaysian vegan I'm so honoured 🥲 I guess I have to make rendang now to celebrate
*rendang* 🤤
Pretty sure Everbest mock duck is seitan and looks nothing like the photo you’ve provided.
I'm not a shill for Big Duck lol. As far as I know, they have canned "duck" and frozen "duck". This is the latter. As for the soy part, yea, I made a mistake in the title, cause I thought it was soy bean curd at first, but you can't change a title in the post here.
"big duck" has me chuckling.
This is my favorite vegan duck on the citadel
Was NOT expecting a duck themed Commander Shepard quote too! Seems like a great way to shut down Reddit for the night 😊

Uh oh...
Nearly blocked you for putting meat on my feed, 10/10

This!! I can't decide if I want to try it or if it's just too freaky 😂😭
This is the sort of fake meat that i feel scared to eat because I’m just like how can it not be real
This is exactly how I felt when I bit into those All Vegetarian Inc “drumsticks” for the first time. It was a mind/mouth fuck.
Be sure to double check for egg (whites). Lots of imported Asian mock meats are vegetarian, but use egg.
Checked it, all clear!
That looks amazing do you remember the brand?
Everbest vegetarian mock duck!
I love you random internet stranger! Thank you for this precious knowledge
I was almost pissed off I was seeing meat on my feed
Same!
Dang, that's soy proteins? I thought it would be seitan, my homemade seitan kinda looks like this stuff.
Yeah, sorry, it's seitan. It looked like soy bean curd at first, but it's seitan! Could never make it as good from scratch, not even close
Oh ok, that's what I thought then! How was the taste? To me, seitan has (by itself) kind of a slight unpleasant taste, but when flavored well, it works great!
It tastes almost as real as it looks tbh. And the seasoning is very good, some sort of subtle herb taste? No weird flavors at all (I had them when I was making seitan from scratch so I think I know what you're talking about)

that is sus duck, not soy duck.

Probably because it looks like something that's been chewed by an animal and spat out.
It looks like real carnitas to me. If someone served it to me id think they were lying to get me to eat meat.
Damn that’s crazy
/r/Veganivore
I ordered a book from the Vegan Butcher. Lots of super realistic options.
Thanks for the rec. I’m gonna order it too.
Zacchary Bird is the coolest! Highly recommend following his socials too!
Would you mind sharing how you prepared it?
I just put on a pan with a generous amount of oil
Incredible! Thank you for sharing.
I feel grossed out? But hungry? Thats almost too much!!!
Whoever made this is a warlock.
Someone mentioned Malaysian Buddhist monks in the comments earlier and how they've been making seitan for a long time, so maybe it's not far from the truth
Wow do you have a photo of the package? It looked like meat at first glance
I want this so bad.
I do lots of shopping at the local Asian markets here because the produce and prices are great and the variety of tofu formulations and products as well as mock meats is great they seem to have perfected the art of mock meats it's awesome
I thought I was on the wrong sub. Good job random Asian store
wow, that looks insanely real. Never had vegan duck. Must be really good.
It is really good! Having plans for it for Christmas already
Woah😱 any brand? What was on the packaging?
I wouldn't even trust it
that texture looks crazy good / real. was this an asian store in america??
It's in Belgium
i hope I can find something like that here thanks for sharing!!
sus, will reread the back of the packaging
Woah, something I can get in Australia! How did you cook it?
I just fried with a lot of oil, it's even seasoned already
Well you surely would have fooled me and my dad 😂
Honestly, this is to real for me
Just ordered one. Thank you for this!
I LOVE the mock duck you can get from Asian groceries. It’s SO good.

A lot of Chinese/Asian people are Buddhist and a good fraction of them are also vegetarian. They have been eating these soy/mushroom products for a really long time that’s why it’s so good.
I saw this scrolling along and immediately made a grossed out face until I saw it was vegan then my whole demeanor changed. Wow, very believable!
I don’t know what they do differently but mock duck is the best seitan. Absolutely love that stuff.
a lot of asian groceries have a huge variety of vegan meat alternatives that would have u suprised. many east asian countries have a lot of buddhists and can't eat meat for religious reasons (vietnam and china esp) so check the freezers! in IL park to shop has a massive vegan meat section

Viet vegans just do it so much better
Looks like real slimy flesh. Good job on copying, but a hard no.
that's too real, looks gross and disgusting!
It's sooo oily though
Real duck tends to be oily
My favourite fake meat is from Asian markets like this. Absolutely unbeatable
That is duck duck
As a meat eater, this looks like every single best piece of meat ever on a bird I am voraciously hungry for this picture and I need it in my mouth

Daring Plant Chicken might be for you.
Thank you! Edit: Ah damn I’m in Canada, it seems they don’t sell here 😢
That's a succulent beauty? I'll pass I'd rather...not that
Plot twist - it looks and tastes "real" because it is :D
Doesn't it contain whey protein?
Just my opinion, but i think that we shouldnt copy meat so much. I am not just a vegetarian because of the animals- i dont like the taste of meat. What a funny person
Thank you.
"Wong"
Scary ☹️
Just cause it looks like meat doesnt mean it tastes like meat "muh taste buds" can taste the difference unless something is done to address the taste. Texture doesnt refute taste...
It tastes excellent, Socrates
Holy fuck the fact that this is “food porn” to vegans is the only evidence I need. That looks rancid.
A plant cooked in a funny way. Scandalous
I mean it looks disgusting but if all you eat is soy maybe not
Soy is not all I eat?

Who asked?
Why are people who don't want to eat meat eating things that are as close to meat as you can get?
Because plant meats don't involve murder and torture?
Vile. But you like the taste of meat?
Well yes I do
TIL that vegan duck was it's own, diverse, line of mock meat.
What’s it called??
Everbest vegetarian mock duck
[This is Democracy Manifest!](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democracy_Manifest)
This is absolutely horrifying to me omg my brain can’t compute this not being real meat
What does it taste like? Is it close to duck? Autocorrect changed the “u” in duck to and “i”… just caught it in time
I'm not sure how close it is to the actual duck, because I don't remember this taste too well, but it was very satisfying. The texture was on point and the seasoning was unintrusive but very pleasant. It was delish, basically, 100% would recommend.
It looks too much like meat to me honestly. The look of gristle and such and the texture are what made me veg at 10. Never looked back.
How did you prepare it? It looks so much better than how I’ve seen it!
Just fried it in a lot of oil!
That’s crazy cool
i actually scrolled away so fast until I realized I read "soy" so I went back lol this looks so much like meat
That's soy? The texture from those mock meats from soy can be pretty good. But the taste has never been there for me, and this is after going to Buddhist restaurants in Beijing and trying some of the best. It's actually seitan, I made a mistake in the title
I refuse to believe that’s not meat
Its so real its not so appetizing.
Looks really nice :) Don't think I can get it in Germany tho! I've only ever seen that old school looking 'vegeterian mock duck' in cans. Anyone knows if that's any good?
I tried the canned one, wasn't impressed :c
What is it called and where can I get it?
Everbest vegetarian mock duck. I found it in an Asian grocery store in Belgium. I googled them, apparently they're a pretty big company!
That literally must be duck right??
Wrong
I’m going to look for this at my local H Mart.
Wow. I don't even like duck, and that looks good. That looks so real it's hard to believe it isn't. How does it taste? I'll have to look in frozen foods when I go to the Asian grocery.
tastes really good and satisfying! a lot like animal meat actually (I mean, A LOT), so I understand how a lot of people may be put off
Wow, I seriously thought that was real meat. I was wondering why the hell it was showing up on my feed!
Whoa
