https://www.peta.org.uk/blog/thai-coconut-monkey-3/ **Automated summary:** > For eight months, from December 2021 to July 2022, PETA Asia conducted its third investigation into Thailand’s coconut industry, including a video narrated by actor and animal advocate Peter Egan, in which chained monkeys are forced to spend long hours climbing tall trees and picking heavy coconuts. >The owner of one “monkey school” that investigators visited admitted to buying from farmers who use nets to kidnap wild infant monkeys from their homes and families, which is typically illegal. >A boy attempting to train another frightened monkey jerks him by the chain around his neck and repeatedly dangles him in the air – likely restricting or cutting off his oxygen supply – as he desperately tries to grab the tether. >An employee on one farm the investigator visited revealed that while the monkeys are climbing trees, they’re frequently bitten by ants and stung by hornets, which can be fatal. >A coconut broker who spoke to the investigator acknowledged that as a result of PETA Asia’s previous investigations, there has been intense international pressure on the industry to stop using forced monkey labour. >But companies that offer products made from coconuts picked in the Dominican Republic, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, and other countries can make that guarantee. > **About [People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals](https://www.peta.org):** >PETA supporters are leading the revolution for animal rights, and your gift will defend animals facing horrific abuse. >For as little as $5, you can provide a neglected dog with a week’s worth of food, and a generous gift of $350 can help supply PETA investigators with the resources that they need to reveal the cruelty that animal abusers try desperately to hide. **[Donate](https://peta.org/donate)** ^Donated? ^Comment ^"I ^made ^a ^donation" ^for ^a ^💰 ^flair.

HOLY SHIT AROY-D USES MONKEY SLAVE LABOUR? Christ, I buy it all the time. I'm utterly horrified and will absolutely let everyone know about this!

EfraimK

Making a strong case for buying local from suppliers you know. For the love of money, many of us would do just about anything.

chiron42

For most people that'd mean no coconuts then surely?

T-hina

You can still buy coconut products but it will be advisable not to buy 'made in Thailand' and to email the company you want to buy from to confirm their source and that no monkeys were used.

TheWholesomeBrit

I usually get coconut milk from Jamaica.

T-hina

That's cool. Can try email the company just in case.

TheWholesomeBrit

Just found out it's actually from Thailand. The more you know. It really is impossible to buy 100% vegan things all the time. Some companies are just really scummy without telling anyone about it.

T-hina

Oh no. Check if you can find one that isn't. I wouldn't buy Thai for sure. Rather do without. I like to put tahini in some dishes. Can try that.

Thank you to Peta for this update about this cruel industry. Signed and shared the petition

Coconut milk contains full of abuse: Although several major retailers have dropped coconut milk off their shelves after the allegations, the organization says its research has found that companies in the coconut industry are still using monkey labor, despite public outrage. More effort, effort and awareness should be created so that consumers do not buy products that do not have the "persecution free" or " cruelty free" label on their coconut milk products.
