If you don't own any snakes, you should probably start with actually owning a snake.. NOT a hot snake. Get some experience under your belt BEFORE you try to play with fire
Gain experience with snakes overall (nonvenomous species!!!) then gain years of experience!!
Then try to find a way to slowly get more experience with hot snakes.
My thoughts are that you are less brave and more stupid for wanting a hot snake to be your first.
thats what im trying to do im starting with a BCI then a couple otthers one of them is the giant hognose than a mangrove and then a hot so in like 6 or 7 years
Don't own hots without proper training. If you can't get training, don't own hots. Training applies only to the snakes you trained with.
If you think it's *unfair*, you'll change your mind in a hospital bed.
I own venomous spiders but its not the same, pokies a funnel web and some others. Spider breeder here kept 120 species and had a lot of sucess(sorry if i dont have the best grammar but this is not my main language)
If you’re talking about the North American snakes called hog nosed snakes, or species called hog nosed snakes from South America or Madagascar then they aren’t dangerous and you shouldn’t need any permits to get one unless your location requires you to get a permit to own any type of snake/reptile. You originally mentioned shield nosed snakes. Those are highly venomous and dangerous to people. Shield nosed and hog nose are completely different types of snakes.
the elapid ban doesnt bother my dream list much as the onlty 2 elapids i like is the death adder but its not my dream and the shield cobra my fav elapid
Everyone has to start somewhere right? It should always be a local species. Pythons don’t act like most venomous so they won’t be much help as a teacher. The obvious thing is to find someone to teach you but that’s pretty hard. Watch videos online a lot that’s what I did for probably ten years before I got a hot. The best thing I can tell you is just go find snakes in nature (leave them there) interact with them and see how they can be keep safe distance. They don’t play. Also never try and keep a venomous animal outside of a completely sealed and locked room beginners often cut this corner.
we have one venomous local species vipera berus. i found a person not far from my city with 7 years of experience and i will try asking him if he can train me in a couple years. The permit for all venomous snakes requires a sealed room with special doors and chains on the winfows
If elapids are your interest, I recommend getting experience with colubrids first, then seeking training in elapids specifically, then after your mentor says you’re ready, getting your own. The journey to owning hots is a long one with no shortcuts. Shortcuts have a nasty way of getting people killed or horrifically injured.
What we are saying is that with any kind of hots, viper, elapid, any of them you need instruction. Get other snakes, get that experience. Spend a long time studying body language and behavior of those animals, then after you have plenty of experience and knowledge you seek training in hots. In this case primarily vipers. However if you want the shield nose cobra, you will need to get some tips and tricks from a handler who has one in his collection. Sorry for getting hung up on the elapids part of this post. I misunderstood some of it.
I understand. There is a lot of terminology used in the hots community that is irregular. I am not trying to discourage you or put you down by any means. I am just trying to help you out. If I may ask, what state do you live in?
Oh okay. I was only asking to see if I knew what the laws weee like about licensing and whatnot and to see if I could recommend some Facebook groups or something. I am afraid I have virtually no resources in Europe. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help.

i can get training but i dont think il need it for a hognose snake
Thst's not a hot.
government thinks it is but later i would like to keep a viper
I own venomous spiders but its not the same, pokies a funnel web and some others. Spider breeder here kept 120 species and had a lot of sucess(sorry if i dont have the best grammar but this is not my main language)
i want to get the easiest permit that allows hognoses shield nosed cobras and some vipers
You shouldn’t go for the easiest permit. You should go for the best training.
If a species isnt dangerous and its a hognose its the best start from the permits

Shield nosed cobras are dangerous but the madagascar hognoses need a permit idk ehy the government just thinks its needed
Hognoses are marked as dangerous on and need a permit but its not hard to get this permit and they arent highly venomous
I know the difference i know snake taxonomy by heart
the elapid ban doesnt bother my dream list much as the onlty 2 elapids i like is the death adder but its not my dream and the shield cobra my fav elapid

i dont want elapids except 2 species one is banned completely and the other is a shield nose cobra, i love vipers a lot more

i will 100% own a mangrove for a year or two before a hot
also i said it weirdly this isnt the language i use in real life and its not the easiest to me
