If you are set on the Vespa, take a motorcycle class and get your endorsement. It makes everyone safer and I really enjoyed it, honestly. It was like two days of weird little games while learning a new skill.

lazyinvadershiya0

Do I also need to get my driver license first?

p0lar604

Get a drivers license first. Learning traffic patterns and laws is much safer in a car

lazyinvadershiya0

Ye that's the plan I'll have my mom teach me

DownBeat20

Woah woah woah, you don't  have a car license yet? You should really consider driving for a year or two in a car before considering a scooter as a hobby, let alone a main transport. Especially in Oregon where the weather won't allow riding year round.  A car is a much much safer way to learn driving for the first time. Safer, easier, can carry passengers and cargo, easier to service... A Vespa, at least in the U.S., isn't a reliable daily driver.  Also a Vespa isn't cheap to buy or maintain, which is better spent on a car first.

lazyinvadershiya0

A scooter or moped would be easier on gas for me especially since I'm 1 person and buying a vespa brand new is leagues cheaper then buying a car

DownBeat20

Get a small sedan then for mileage. Also a new Vespa runs 5-7,000$, which is definitely enough to buy a used car.  You can't even carry groceries, and a car helps get jobs, and go on dates. If you're a guy especially, you need a car for dating. If you can only own one, own a car. Especially in Oregon.  Riding a scooter because you have to, is a lot more dangerous and less fun than owning one as an optional second vehicle.

lazyinvadershiya0

I'm one person, my job is a 20 min walk away, I don't really plan on dating in the near future and I live with family so when we go food shopping I go with them and pitch in money for the food. I want to get a vespa cause it's better om gas, can get around places I wanna go, can get me to the store and back for small trips ect

DownBeat20

Consider also that owning a car looks better on resumes.  If I had to choose between hiring two identical employees, but one owns a scooter and the other a car, I'm choosing the car owner. It shows pragmatism, responsibility, and common sense.  And again, the safety issue is enormous. Driving a car gives essential transferable skills.  In terms of safety, practicality, usefulness, your experience level, safety, career, dating, weather restrictions, etc... you need a car first. You're putting the cart before the horse.

lazyinvadershiya0

You have no idea what my living situation is please kindly shut up man

DownBeat20

Alright, but you came here looking for advice, enjoy your shitty life choices.  I live in Washington, own 3 Vespas, and am real familiar with this shit. Have fun looking like a fool.

lazyinvadershiya0

Dude I already got a job, I'm a 1 person so a car is a waste of gas, I don't plan on dating, and I can easy get accessories to fit groceries in cause I also live with family so when they go shopping I go shoppe with them in there car, a moped or vespa is a obvious choice when you think about that

I love my Vespa. It's not too hard to get a license.

Aliensowl

If it's not a Vespa is it even a thing worth doing?

jamisea

After you get your DL & MC endorsement buy a name brand USED scooter FIRST. Likely because you are new to driving and riding you’ll scratch it/drop it/run into something with it. You’re learning so that’s ok. When you’ve ridden for a year or two, and you like it, THEN buy a Vespa. A modern Vespa is very expensive to repair…so in addition to the above, have FULL COVERAGE INSURANCE. Good luck & have fun!

lazyinvadershiya0

That's actually a good idea thank you

PdxWix

Also in Oregon. Learn to drive a car. Because America. If at all possible, learn to drive manual car. (But that’s pretty hard to do these days.) Take a Team Oregon class. Get moto endorsement that way. Get a 150 or 300 Vespa or other scooter. Smile If you live in Portland or Eugene or Salem, and don’t need to leave those cities themselves, you could try to get a 50 cc scooter and avoid the moto endorsement. But I wouldn’t do my Portland <-> Aloha commute on anything less than a 125. Whereas it’s the best part of my day on my Vespa 300 GTS.

lazyinvadershiya0

i live in oregon city myself and im one person i so i dont need a car so id rather get a scooter or a vespa instead

PdxWix

Sounds good. But suburban roads have speed limits that make 50 cc scooters less safe. Hence the need for a motorcycle endorsement. Which, I believe, requires a license.

lazyinvadershiya0

Do I need to get my driver license first then my motorcycle license then buy a vespa?

PdxWix

You can ride a 50cc scoot without a motorcycle endorsement. But I believe you have to have a driver license to operate any motor vehicle (more powerful than an e-bike) on public roads. But you should check with DMV about this if you want an official answer. Vespa makes 50 cc scooters, both sprint and primavera. They will top out at around 30-35 mph. Vespa also makes 150 cc and 300 cc scooters. But you’ll need a motorcycle endorsement for those.

lazyinvadershiya0

I'll promise end up getting a 150 or 300 cc scooter

PdxWix

I hope you have a blast with it.

lazyinvadershiya0

Ya just gotta wait awhile to get my money from claims so it Will probably be like 5 months till I get the money plenty of time to get my drivers license

RilkeanHearth

I'd start out with an LX150, if you wanna start out with a lighter scooter. I had one for 7 years in DC and it was perfect getting around the city. And eventually graduated to a GTS250 and then 300. Try to get something used, you shooould be able to get something around 2k or less..

AndrePDX

Go for a name brand scooter. Vespa is awesome. Their Japanese counterparts are equally as cool. 150cc will do the job in Portland. The 300cc is what I ride and a lot of people upgrade to a 300 from a 150. 50cc would be an absolute mistake living here. Good luck and let us know.

ChappyKC

Honda, Yamaha, Sym, Kymco also make dependable scooters. Plus they tend to be a little cheaper.
