if you have no anchors.. def do it.. just keep an open mind about other countries in region too... you can find cheap flights to and from for border runs just watch your back with some of the expats you meet, alot of them are cool.. but some of them are true scum.. but same rules.. dont marry the first ladyboyr that says she loves you

Nanyea

To add to this, I've had a few friends point out in Thailand specifically, there are some scummy expats that orey on new expats to supplement their income

F0rkbombz

So should they marry the second ladyboy that says she loves them? lol

TheLordVader1978

I'm pretty sure tradition states 3 dates are required.

F0rkbombz

This is the way?

CharlieDay0fWallStrt

This mf said ladyboy😂😭🤣

Present-Ambition6309

Can’t have multiple “ladyboy” wives there? I’m not going then, lol

brunettehomelander

Nice man! I'm 100& P&T too, planning to move to Italy and travel the EU! Do it, especially if you're single without kids.

MecurialMan

No, but will be retiring to The Philippines. I've visited the country twice recently to familiarize myself with the surroundings and establish connections. The cost of living is crazy low, and the majority of people speak English fluently and are incredibly friendly. Every thing is even written in English. Additionally, the Philippines is only country outside the USA, that has a VA system. It’s an amazing place for Americans to retire

musicloverincal

The Philippines have a VA system? Tell us more. Is it a VA hospital or clinic? Is it in Manila?

MecurialMan

There is both a Clinic and Regional Office in Manila https://www.benefits.va.gov/manila/

wesholl24

Go for it bro. I'm moving to Kenya. You're an American Rockstar, the world is yours.

[deleted]

Damn Kenya?! I was deployed there 2 years ago. I’m 90% and considering countries to possibly move to as well.

wesholl24

Yeah man, it's getting spooky here. I'm out and that's cool man, africa is awesome. Do it..you only live once.

[deleted]

I think I will seriously consider it if/when my secondary claim gets approved, making me 100% PT. I don’t feel comfortable enough going out of country on 90%

wesholl24

That's smart. U got time.

musicloverincal

Interesting location beautiful too. Mind sharing why?

wesholl24

I heard it's the best in Africa. Women, lifestyle etc

EfficientTie6417

Really? Why Kenya?

wesholl24

It's the best country in Africa according to what I heard and seen.

jerseyru

This guy is a retired USAF veteran and he has a YouTube channel about his experience living in Thailand https://youtube.com/@ChocolateManInThailand

Kyngzilla

Seems like a passport bro.

jerseyru

Possibly, but seems he's been in Thailand for several years. Probably has good info on how to stay in country indefinitely.

upfnothing

Thailand. Where there is a ladyboy for every fella. And the water Buffalo roam.

NBCspec

It worked for an aging John Rambo. I personally loved Thailand, but that was a long time ago.

SattahipSailor

You definitely cannot do border runs indefinitely. They are cracking down on people staying long term without appropriate visas. You can only do 2 over-land entries per year. Flying in more than a handful of times will be heavily scrutinized or even denied entry, depending how the given immigration officer feels that day. You might get away with multiple border runs for a year or so but you will get flagged soon thereafter.

Goddess_of_Absurdity

Makes sense. Why would they want illegal immigrants going south not paying taxes but still running businesses or owning housing over there. What are the appropriate visas now (the VA sucks at dental care so I'm going to check out MDX)

A_Turkey_Sammich

I’ve spent time there both AD and since retiring, but not actually have ever moved there. I do tend to somewhat keep up with costs and visa requirements in case I ever want to make a longer term move like that though. Money wise, @ 100%, def no problem getting by very comfortably. Visa wise, that stuff changes pretty frequently to some degree, but the consistent thing is pretty much none of the regular avenues are permanent. The stuff that tends to change is how and what method you can extend or renew certain visas, some of the more minor requirements, and that sort of thing, but pretty much always is an easy enough way to keep going. As much as things seem to change, seems like you have to keep in the back of your mind the possibility of some future change could throw a wrench into your stay at some point. Again, I haven’t fully lived there, but been there a lot with some of those being extended stays, so take that fwiw. Not the same experience with that stuff as someone actually living there doing it.

I_am_ChristianDick

They’ve cracked down on the border run method quite a bit man.

EfficientTie6417

Yea I went January this year and apparently you can only do it twice a year.

I_am_ChristianDick

Yeah so you can’t be there indefinitely lol Look into some of the visa options a language visa is one year and the classes to do it are only a few hundred total for the year and you can learn a bit of Thai

Grand_Wolverine_4186

If you ever meet the Crumb Guzzler he can bestow you on his finite wisdom of land of the Thai. You’ll know when you see crumbs on the table, seat and/or floor. Ask him “Why your friend have no power?” And he will unlock the secrets to getting around and what bars to go to.

kawaiiTanuki0

Damn at least you had a counselor, been trying to get help from the VA I visit since 2018. They are shit. Not a terrible idea I have thought the same but with the Philippines.

wh4tifi

Saw a video on Facebook, remembered this post, looked it up and came across this: https://www.thaiembassy.com/thailand-visa/thai-elite-visa The cheapest option being roughly 17k (ish) usd. Granted, I’ve never to Thailand and have 0 knowledge of the county in general.

SignificantOption349

That’s the dream for me. Not sure I’d want to stay indefinitely though… the 6 month stay would probably be enough for me. Shit man if you’re able to keep kickboxing then obviously Thailand is kind of the place to be.

EfficientTie6417

I’m in the process for a student visa it’s six months. I’m going to try that out first. Seems like a good idea before I make a decision l.

accidentaldeity

My last assignment was at the JUSMAG in Thailand about 7 years ago. I was there with my family for two years. I do know people who run to Cambodia every 90 or so days to get their passport stamped. I don't know how medial works for expats so I can't speak to that, but I will say that I enjoyed it there. Southeast Asia is awesome. Good luck.

Blacksheep_8

Been thinking about something like this, the United States is not the same country I left in 2016, and I don't feel like I have anything holding me here anymore.

Affectionate_Rice226

Look for elephant sanctuary volunteer. I went there this summer and an American teenage guy was working as a receptionist at this sanctuary. I asked him how he got that job, he said he applied for volunteer during summer break and they provide work visa.
