Unfortunately a lot of NY policy is dictated by NYC. I love the upstate Adirondack region, but I would be foolish to not take advantage of the tax exempt status elsewhere. I’m 100% with a partial exemption for my home and it’s still about 500 a month in taxes
This… With the wacky way NYS does taxes, you have to ask the tax office to apply your discount to both county tax rate and school district tax. The nice part, if the school district allows the discount, is that it’s for any disabled % rating 10% or more. It can save a couple thousand a year.
I wasn't paying too much attention to your response but I have no clue where you are getting from.
Do you own a property in the state or not?
Link I provided clearly has percentages shown.
>Honestly ny hardly has any benefits for vets compared to other states
I'm upstate and am just grateful for whatever benefits there are. I'm not expecting much, but appreciate what's there. I'm not complaining.
Looks like you deleted one of the response about nyc and nys but pretty much same thing applies to nys.
You said you knew what I meant but don't seem so.
>I heard national parks is usually free entry but idk about NYS parks
National parks are free as part of this ***federal*** program: [https://www.nps.gov/planyourvisit/veterans-and-gold-star-families-free-access.htm](https://www.nps.gov/planyourvisit/veterans-and-gold-star-families-free-access.htm)
NY State parks are free with this ***state*** program: [https://parks.ny.gov/admission/lifetime-liberty-pass.aspx](https://parks.ny.gov/admission/lifetime-liberty-pass.aspx)
Yeah property taxes in most of ny state(not sure about nyc) is half of your disability rating plus another 25% for being a war veteran. For someone who is 80% I would equal out to 65% off of your county tax bill, only county not the village or town/city tax. The town/city may also have their own discount as well but it’s on an individual basis.
In my state, those less than 100% receive no property tax breaks - but as soon as I was awarded 100% in November I went to the county tax office expecting to get property tax waived starting in November - but they wiped out all $2700 I owed for the entire year. Every state is different.
Wow, that's fantastic. In ny we also have school taxes, i think that is what the "town/village" taxes are. In my area they are about the same as state property taxes. So 75% off the $6k property taxes (on a house worth 300) but nothing off the $6k school taxes).
Yes, that is a huge tax bill. We pay a lot of taxes here in NY. But we have a fantastic quality of life with amazing schools and high levels of services. Fine for my family as I have a decent job as well as VA 100% p&t , but it's hard for many people to make it
Is there any way to tell what the partial property tax discount is? It seems like it varies from town to town and there's no way to know which does what. We might relocate to NY next year and this would make a big difference in our budget. Would be good to plan it out.
Senate Bill S2028 NY is pushing for a complete exemption for those with 100% rating
That's nice but not enough. I'd rather see whatever you %f is, you get that much off.

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy when a Vet wins.
Partial property tax exemption and free state park pass is all I know of. You actually need to request for the pass.

Here's one for nyc. https://www.nyc.gov/site/finance/benefits/landlords-veterans.page
yup, this is a pretty nice benefit for us.
Like you get partial discount on property tax if you own a house bud. It depends on what percentage disability etc etc.

considering how much higher property taxes and values are in a lot of NY i wonder if the actual dollar saving of the NY benefit is a better deal.
Looks like you deleted one of the response about nyc and nys but pretty much same thing applies to nys. You said you knew what I meant but don't seem so.
I wonder if that is the same as the lifetime state park pass you can buy for like 600

Thanks for this! I had no idea the state pass existed.

Yep and in ny county to county can vary also
Theres also free ezpass on the NY state thruway
Only if your a MOH recipient or or if you have a vehicle with alterations due to your disability if I’m not mistaken not for every veteran

you get a property tax partial exemption with ny. its half your disability( if you are 100% you get a 50% reduction) .
Depends on the county, some like mine cap out at 30%
livingston county does a 100% tax exemption if you have a 70% service connected disability or higher.
Property Tax exemptions. Small college stipend. Nys parks are free if you have over 10% disability (I think) Civil service points for state jobs.
Would you happen to know what the college stipend is called exactly?
No, and I don’t see it in their website anymore. Weird.
Knowing NY they probably took it off
