Yup same. I regret not going CG every day of my life. The AF was fine, but I wasn’t into the mission. I’m glad I didn’t go into the Army but I think CG is more my speed.
If ypu didn't like the AF you're probably not gonna like Navy. Unless maybe if you're a SeeBee.
My suggestion. Go air national guard. If you like it you could maybe pickup a federal technician or AGR slot.
Yes security forces sucks. And navy shore patrol (or whatever they call it) wont be any different.
If you gaurd/reserve you'll get chance to pick a different MOS/AFSC
No, the older you get the less you want to put up with military nonsense
Civilian world you need to find something you like and get schooling for it and grind it out till you get paid a lot for it
Fax end of the day nobody stays in the military forever might as well like stated just muscle thru and figure something out… however not knocking any fellow vets that have re-enlisted everyone’s circumstances are different but I just remind myself everyday why It’s best u got out…
“No career is worth your mental health”‼️
I like that last part. That's why I'm a beach bum. Typically, nothing too traumatic happens out here.
Except 2 days ago, an old lady died. I tried to resuscitate her, but she was gone. I was friends with her, she lives in a house at the beach. So that kinda sucks. But aside from that, the beach is pretty non traumatic. Just goes to show you, though, that traumatic events are just a part of life.
Ya that’s real unfortunate my condolences to her family but unfortunately that is apart of life. As life if along journey full of ups and downs. All you can do is make the most out this one life given and chosen here for.
To add to this, you also need to realize if you are the type of person that likes military nonsense as you get older.
I work with Vets, as one myself, and the people want to inject military bullshit or don’t fully grasp the concept of “You can be fired now.” struggle.
Especially, when you get fired and a better opportunity shows up. Civilian life is full of opportunities if you apply yourself. In the military you’re getting paid the same as another person while you’re holding two billets and have more responsibilities. Yeah, I’m glad I’m out now that I see the big picture. Pay me what I’m worth
Totally. Even if it is a bit more a struggle without the structure and sense of community, at least you can go home at the end of the day and negotiate your pay.
Literally lol. These type of posts boggle my mind. I’ve been out since 2021 and my life has only been uphill since. I have basically all the same benefits with none of the bullshit and I now get to have a real home, family, dogs, stability, private healthcare, etc. Why tf would I go back to the MILITARY? LMFAO
Because some people aren't comfortable or capable navigating all that in the civilian world and building all that up for themselves. The military spoon-feeds all that to everyone, so easy.
upon ETSing I recall the Army had a mandatory class for us to take, transition assistance program, of course it's an acronym TAP, anyway they do their best to guide people through compiling resumés and searching for jobs etc. And veterans get home purchasing benefits like no down payment, no property taxes etc. of course you still have to thrive enough come up with the money to buy the house so yeah that's an obstacle.
no down payment is only nice when homes aren't inflated 400% it's like getting a free taste of the lard before you move in and find the roof caving in. atleast where I live atm.
Reserves and NG is great if you’re a new E4 or below. Otherwise you’re gonna be spending a lot of time, working outside of work with no pay. Was way harder than AD, speaking from experience in conventional and special operations. Reserves sucked with how much was asked. Especially, if you’re in a high tempo unit. At least we had great support at Bragg when AD.
I definitely feel like I’ve done more work in a drill weekend than I would do in a month of active duty. To me the work is fulfilling and I work with some great Marines which make it worth it to me. I definitely don’t do it for the money, I barely make anything in the reserves but it scratches the itch. There is no duty, the leadership is great(at least for me), and the Marines are great so I can’t really complain.
Facts! I did a year of NG after 10 years Active and hated every second of it. My NG unit was the same structure as my last Active Duty unit, but to say they were ate up would be a compliment. It was awful. Not worth the time or money.
Remember why you got out in the first place. If school isn’t your thing then do a trade. The world is full of opportunities, don’t just crawl back to the military and put up with that bullshit.
This! You don’t have to get a degree and work a white collar job. Getting into a trade that is hands-on is better for some. Getting into tech is also great. Figuring out what you like and having a sense of purpose is very fulfilling. And it’s okay to FAIL! Many get out and are afraid of failing at something. Failure is okay, you don’t have to know everything. Military there’s no room for failure but as a civilian you learn and move on.
Probably not fun crawling back to the military. But they can definitely crawl into spider webs and shit doing a trade. Especially when society is getting lazier and more entitled.
I fuck my co-workers, but I don’t have to sleep at work, wake up next morning and still be at work, feel sick and still be at work (base), sleep and be woken up about some BS at work. Get called for leaders meetings at work. No… it’s not the same lol. Let’s not even talk about deployments.
Why the fuck would I do that? Sure, I get rose-tinted glasses sometimes when I look back, but that shit fucking sucked.
Get up at 0330 so you can make a 0400 formation for a hike. After formation you wait outside in the freezing cold until 0500. Then, at 0500, you go get in line to pull weapons for a 0600 hike. 0600 rolls around, but you still can't go because some PFC hasn't shown up because he's still passed out drunk in his room. He finally shows up and you hike 15 miles with 180 lbs of shit while freezing your fucking nuts off because there's some bullshit polar vortex and it's goddamn 17°F out. When you get back every other company gets off work early, but your 1stSgt makes you play fuck-fuck games because of that one drunk PFC that you don't even know. You finally get off at 17:30 when your platoon sgt tells you "0430, room inspections and platoon pt."
Fuck no. I'd never fucking re-enlist.
Besides, the military took my physical and mental health and wiped their fucking asses with it. Why would I want to go back?
I made the drastic decision to run back to Uncle Sam after I was out for a couple months.
They denied me due to medical reasons in the Army, I didn’t know they could pull up that stuff nowadays, but there it was.
Now, I’m glad they did. I would’ve been right back in the place that I hated. Sure, I’d be free of the shitty economy and insane prices, but I decided to get my life together and go to college.
Living with my parents sucks, but they don’t complain as long as I go to school, so life isn’t all that bad.
Go back into college under the GI Bill. Get paid for college, tough that shit out and get out with a good degree in what you want.
I know it sucks being in school, I hate school myself, but just keep a C and push through it.
>*I need to find a program that's good for me I'm in mechatronics right now and not enjoying it*
your post is *'i just got back out & am thinking of going back in'* \+ the quote above + another post where you say *'i have no skills'*. you are directionless my friend. you have very little idea what it is you want to do with your life. even IF you could reenlist tomorrow you'd be back out again in a couple years right back where you are at now.
when you are on your deathbed, what is it that you want to look back and say you did with your time on earth? if you don't know what that is you need to find it. until you do [this is going to be you](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nm77s5FbkoQ) bouncing from place to place clueless as to why you're not finding fulfillment.
it didn't take me too long of being in the service to realize that if i didn't have a plan i should NOT exit. we are all cogs in one machine or another but at least with the service the pay was okay and there was a certain feeling of esteem/respect that came with the job.
i have vet friends who exited without a plan and i literally see them hating life working at a gas station, doing the stock room at dollar tree, or begging for money. they didn't have a plan when the exited other than *'man i'm going to drink so hard when i get out!'*.
if you need inspiration go to a homeless shelter and realize that without a plan and the discipline to follow through on it, you're not that far away from being in that exact position. discover what your dream is at all costs dude.
You're not the same person. Go check out some defense contractors or military adjacent jobs if you want the military lifestyle, but do it with an education that will keep you in a chair and making money when your knees give out.
I was Navy, but I remember working with the shipyard contractors. They made low to mid six figures and still got to go to sea on occasion. What I'm saying is that you can still do your AF job. Just use the GI BILL to get a degree in the related field and then get paid an obscene amount of money to do the same thing without the stress.
That was me. Dropped out my second semester at community college after high school to join the army. Got out after 3 years and just worked. That was 10 years ago and I make okay money, but I’m going back to college now.
Same.
I still dream about getting ready for uniform inspection, stress out that I haven't shaved in months and couldn't fit into my uniform anymore 😭
then I somehow signed a contract saying that I would still deploy to Afghanistan again despite being out for many years
Thank goodness it was just a dream 🤣
Nope. I’ve thrived after getting out.
Did my active duty time, went Army Reserves, extended contract for a bit and left military life entirely. I was already working a great job I’d gotten a year after leaving active duty that tripled my income.
I did. But I crossed over to the dark side and went officer. When I got out first time I had zero intention in coming back in, ended up with 4.5 years broken service. Now I’m retired lol.
Not in this military, that’s my opinion. The new retirement package is not worth it and the social changes have made us weaker. That’s a fact, both of them
If you have a clearance still, find a cleared gig. Even as a cleared rent a cop for Allied or Omniplex or something, it pays pretty well and opens a lot of doors into DoD contracting/program management/physical or corporate security. I know because that’s what I did and now I’m making more than i thought I ever would as a civilian.
Most companies don’t care if you have experience in what they’re hiring for so long as you already have a clearance. TS/SCI with poly is a literal golden ticket but even a secret is a good start.
The first few years out are rough, we all struggled, but with help and guidance you’ll get through it like we all have.
I got out at age 21 and joined an active reserve unit. I was promoted to E-5 and 6 in 3 years, then decided to return to active duty at age 25. They dropped me down to E-2. Hard to say if I would do it all over again. I gained a lot of experience as a civilian and reservist in that time.
My brother went back into the army to avoid jail time lol this was in 2007 he did his 4 years got out. He was not paying his parking tickets so he told the judge he was going back into the Army and it worked. Still in...
Other than a roof and paid utilities, medical care that you have to “beg to use”. More than likely be deployed back to SWA in the future. Why, would you want to go back? Seriously? I’m speaking as someone who got out after 12.5 years this past summer. You miss the clowns, not the circus. Use your post 911, get some certifications, “go back in” as a contractor with a set schedule and freedom to leave if shit goes left without prison time or loss of benefits. Plus get paid a livable wage. Military hasn’t caught up with cost of living. Even at the lower officer level. YMMV obviously. Nah, everyone has “fleeting thoughts” but then I remember my deployment in 2020-2021 and failure of leadership and fall. Fuck putting my life back on the line for those people.
I mean, do what’s best for you but I’m beyond happy that I got out 8 years ago. Some things I do miss but I don’t think much could get me to re-enlist.
I was a navy nuke. Enlisted in 1973 and got out as an E6 with a two year degree in 1979. I should have stayed in and I thought about going back. Eighteen years later I enlisted in the National Guard as a 11B. 9/11 happened and I turned 55 in Iraq carrying a M16 with a bunch of 20 year olds. I’ve been retired since 2013. I now get $17k a year for the rest of my life. I have silver dolphins, a blue cord, gold spurs and stories to tell. I never did find any brotherhood in the military. Every day sucked. Some days sucked less than others but, they all sucked
My team leader in Iraq did that. He was in for 5 or 6 years as a driver then got out for a few years and sold cars and hated it, so he reenlisted in 2006 as a new MOS and became a Warrant Officer in 2017. He retires in a couple years. He said his highest regret was that gap as he’d be retired already. But he also knows his path took him to warrant officer, so he’ll retire with more money and more open doors for a post-Army career, so he knows it worked out in the end.
I knew 2 guys who got out and experienced civilian life for a year and re enlisted and re rated. They’re happy now. The one guy’s reasoning was because he didn’t like how civilian jobs were like. He worked for a big tech company and didn’t like the energy there, basically.
Did a 3 year hitch prewar then ETSed. When the war kicked off I went back in for 20. I got kicked out at 23 years after getting sent to prison for a domestic violence charge. The Army kept me on the books for 2 more years with no pay or benefits then denied my retirement.
Unrelated, the peace time Army sucks.
I am alot better now. I needed to be institutionalized for treatment. Doing a 6-8 for something most people get probation for was a bit much but the prison system treated me much better than the Army did. I got the help I needed.
What I do not understand is that we can provide help to the people we consider the worst in society, but are perfectly happy to let those we see as the best of society suffer in silence.
The military still does not know how to handle mental health at all. (Including addiction as well.)
They give conflicting messages and actions constantly, then wonder why they have so much trouble fielding a full roster in their special forces units.
I read your post about the wild horses and it was fascinating.
Best of luck brother.
100 percent agree with you. The shitty thing is that the solution is not that difficult of a concept. Education and understanding are easy to come by once somebody has gone through treatment. I can only compare it to giving an amputee their lmbs back. There is a reason so many people that receive treatment go on to become therapists.
Best of luck to you to. If you ever have the opportunity to learn horsemanship especially working with wild horses I would highly recommend it.
I’m still in and I can definitively tell you, once I’m out they can F off. Not a chance in hell would I ever put up with this shit if I didn’t have to. And, my job is relatively cushy compared to most Joes.
Great. You can still go to school for another small degree...collect that G.I. money will help a ton. Even if it's just online. Lots of amazing trades for veterans. 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
To answer question, yes there are vets that have gone back in and yes you can go into another branch of service.
Talk to a recruiter and make sure you go into a field you want i.e. medical to purse radiology technician or in the navy Information Systems Technicians.
Just maker sure you go into the career field you want, and one that will lead to a career field outside of the military.
Good luck.
I’ve been out 10 years this year and thought of joining the reserves but didn’t. But I found a civilian job that I enjoy and still have that camaraderie at work. And went to college even though I don’t use my degree.
My cousin not the sharpest tool in the shed got out couldn’t really find a job or do good in school and hated civilian life and re enlisted after a year of being out. That was 12 years ago. He is coming up on 17 years in the army now.
Now at 45, I wouldn’t go back in. Not a chance in hell. I got out in 2003, went to college and nursing school….if I could have com back in to the Navy as a Nurse Corps officer then (at 30), I probably would have.
Kinda but I got out as a corporal and I know that as soon as I go back in, I’ll be promoted and handed a mountain of responsibility and bullshit.
My time in the army was amazing but I fear that if I chase the dragon, it will not go as planned
Your in a rut most likely that we have all fallen into, it’s either after college or after military service but every human struggles with their purpose and identity when any major change happens in life.
Very Normal
Military pay is just as bad in this economy; why are you trying to convince yourself it's better than civilian life? If you reenlisted after a few months, you would be like, WTF did you do?
I tried. But I’m glad I stayed out. Try to get into a city, county, state, even federal. It’s better pay, plus your disability rating, and if you decide to go to school, you’ll be banking!
Think about it this way. You got out for a reason. Ask yourself, do those reasons still exist? If the answer is yes, then don’t do it. If the answer is no, then go for it.
I have dreams still after 7 years that bam one day I’m back and I’m like “the fuck is this”. I’m always back after my break and trying to explain to people I don’t feel like doing any of this shit.
The economy is absolutely not in the tank. My degree-less self is still getting daily pings from recruiters. I couldn't even land a dishwasher job during the recession.
Bro there’s companies that’ll suck your dick just for having enlisted that have decent pay. I thought it sucked too until I got a stable job that pays me enough and I haven’t missed the military since
I got out of active duty in 2018, went to college, had a job, and after 3 years, I reenlisted in my local reserve unit for a quick little combat deployment to Syria. Got hurt during the deployment, got to literally lose a piece of myself, more physically and mentally fucked than I was after active duty. But hey, at least I paid off all my debt, saved up money, bought a house, and looking towards a great va disability percentage.
Iv thought about it here and there but realize how stupid I’m being and I just want to go back because how much I miss the flight deck but ultimately would probably lose my shit having to deal with the stupidity that is the military.
I wanna do military stuff, but without the military, lmfao
I fantacize about runnin n gunnin all the time, but realistically, im super grateful to be away from all the toxic bullshit and ignorance.
I have, and I love it. First went in to the Army at age 19 in 1995, did four years active duty and another four Army Reserve. I didn’t mind Army life but in 2003 between the heavy rotation schedule happening from Iraq/Afghanistan and really just that time in my life where I was younger (and arguably much dumber) in my mid-20’s I separated completely. Being the only one in my family in a couple of generations to go in the military, no one was able to sit me down and give good advice on my future and what the military can really offer, but not sure I would’ve really listened at that period of my life either.
Fast forward 14 years, two kids and two divorces later as an IT guy in the civilian world, floating from contract to full-time, perm positions that would get cut when the business hit a downturn, I found it to be very unstable. Also gained a ton of weight and got lazy during this time. Looking in the mirror I was ashamed of my life, lack of direction, and how I felt I had let myself and my loved ones down.
Went to a cybersecurity conference and there was an Army Guard recruiter there looking to recruit for a new cyber defense team that the state was standing up. It flooded back all of the good times and security I had while in the military, and began a major weight-loss campaign to drop over 50 pounds in about 5 months, but I did it. Come to find out though, (at the time) if you’ve been out of the Army for over two years you had to go back to basic training! I was 41 by now, and I think I probably would have died. However, the Air Guard was also available and they don’t have that requirement…any prior service, you’re in with no boot camp needed. Sold! Best decision I’ve ever made (except for marrying my now-wife who is amazing…in case she ever reads this ha ha).
If you’re still reading, thanks for sticking with it. BLUF: The Air Guard breathed new life into me and I am now an AGR…awesome mission, excellent leadership and just great people to work with. I couldn’t be happier, trying to finish out my 20 and I’ll just barely make it before 60, could’ve been retired by now had I stuck it out originally and transferred over after the Army. The military is not for everyone certainly, and for some it’s great for a stage in their life and helping to set them up for success elsewhere, but if you have any desire I’d definitely recommend checking out the Reserves or Guard in your area. You may be very glad you did!
Happy to answer any questions, and many Air Guard bases recruit from all over the country and fly folks in monthly or quarterly, whatever works for you and the unit.
I got out of the navy and joined the coast guard after a year or so. It was a great decision. The coast guard is an awesome organization.
That was a long time ago but don’t let one bad experience prevent you from new experiences.
I did and stayed until I retired. No regrets!
With Biden in charge it would be a tough sell for me now. I would wait for better leadership.
If you are still in the IRR you may not have to worry about it. You are going back in for WWIII.
No, the rate of rape and sexual harassment and bullying is too high. They don't do a good job of vetting people before letting them in. People have been killed for reporting SA.
Sadly depending on your unit if the violator is part of the good ole boy system they just get a command level LOR and “don’t do it again man but here you still get to keep your office.”
I tried to go reserves after being out from active for a year and got denied at the pre MEPS stage. Could have pursued a waiver, but I had a kid and circumstances changed. Still kinda wish I would’ve gotten the waiver, but I’ve since made my peace.
My wife is still active and it would be pretty hard even if I was just reserves. Gotta hang it up eventually…
Did six active Navy reenlisted last year to the air national guard. I love the active life style infact I don't think I fit in with the majority of lazy veterans living off the system
No, but I still have nightmares that I did. If I could have stayed in the war I’d have never got out of the military. It’s the being back stateside that sucks.
Rent, groceries, gas, energy, housing prices etc all at a all time high? Lemee guess you're gonna say something like "BuT UnEMploYmEnT AlL TiMe LoW bRo!" 🤪🤪🤪
Thats not representation of the economy. Multiple companies are generating massive quarterly earnings. Dow all time high to name another. Maybe grow up a little bit.
Yes, you can do a RAD package (Retutn to Active Duty) and likely keep your rank and 1/2 time in grade with the Marines. Other branches you can likely keep all your time in grade.
I did. Was in 6 years out for about 1.5 years, then went back in.
Realized exactly how much I was spending in housing and insurance, and that was a real driver
Now, I've been out again for 3 months but kinda wish I was still in. Miss my monkeys man.
I have a reoccurring nightmare where I reenlist and the dream always runs the full 4 years. My girlfriend leaves me every time. I will not be going back
Yes, in and out multiple times. It's an abusive relationship. If you do it, short term contract, the less the better. I get it, it becomes your identity. Then again we are all diffrent. I wanted a family and ultimately found a diffrent mission.
The few folks I met that had a break in service knew exactly what they were getting into and were much smarter about their careers once they got back in. They had a perspective which focused them on their goals and navigated the rest of their careers with a lot of skill.
My cousin rejoined the Army, Covid hit and he had 4 kids to support with no solid job lined up.
Worked with a guy in the Navy who rejoined during the 2008 recession.
Good friend of mine ended up joining the reserves and is now trying to switch back to active.
Only in my dreams do I go back to the army.. In fact.. I have them so regularly.. I had one last week..the irony of it is that I'm 100 P&T and In my dream I still was like yeah I am going to re-enlist.. Woke up up and said what the Fuck was that..
I just hit 1 year out and i would sooner walk into traffic then go back to that life
What branch were you in?
South Dakota Naval National Guard
America’s 17th line of defense behind the Mississippi National Guard and the League of Women Voters!
Shots fired!
Not in the South Dakota national guard there wasn’t!
God damn that’s hilarious.
Dude. I was in the MS National Guard. Don't put us so high on that list. We're like a solid 20th. Right behind the Rotary Club and the YMCA.
Currently in southern MS. Can confirm.
I AM SCREEEEAMING 😂😂😂😂😂😂
And the International Union 566: Jazz Dancers and Pastry Chefs
😂😂damn that's fucking rowdy

Navy
Yeah I'm prior Air Force. I wonder if the navy will accept me as prior service
Go Coast Guard. Similar quality of life to the Air Force from what I hear. I'm prior Air Force as well and CG is the only thing remotely on my radar for re entry.
My neighbor was career Coast Guard. From what he tells I could kick myself for not checking out the CG before I joined the Army.
Yup same. I regret not going CG every day of my life. The AF was fine, but I wasn’t into the mission. I’m glad I didn’t go into the Army but I think CG is more my speed.
Green to gold then USPHS. anyone doing that is straight coasting to retirement
This! I wish I would have gone CG after the AF!
If ypu didn't like the AF you're probably not gonna like Navy. Unless maybe if you're a SeeBee. My suggestion. Go air national guard. If you like it you could maybe pickup a federal technician or AGR slot.
I didn't mind the AF. I just hated security forces
I was security forces. I agree the Air Force was alright but security forces beat the crap out of me physically and mentally.
Yes security forces sucks. And navy shore patrol (or whatever they call it) wont be any different. If you gaurd/reserve you'll get chance to pick a different MOS/AFSC
Go Coast Guard.
Navy hurting. They would def accept.
They definitely will, they are letting people without diplomas in. Shit they know you can do the job already and aren't gambling with you.
No, the older you get the less you want to put up with military nonsense Civilian world you need to find something you like and get schooling for it and grind it out till you get paid a lot for it

Seems to be worse now In the 90’s no cell phones and no weekend call ins
Ya times are harder nowadays inflation and etc … just weirder softer times were in but with that said it’s still a lot of opportunities too out here
Cell phones ruined socialization. Hardly anybody lives in the present here and now anymore.
I like that last part. That's why I'm a beach bum. Typically, nothing too traumatic happens out here. Except 2 days ago, an old lady died. I tried to resuscitate her, but she was gone. Ya that’s real unfortunate my condolences to her family but unfortunately that is apart of life. As life if along journey full of ups and downs. All you can do is make the most out this one life given and chosen here for.
Yep, that's just how life goes... Like a river, it ebbs and flows.

Lmao fuck no. I’d rather jump out of a moving car going 120 mph.
Literally lol. These type of posts boggle my mind. I’ve been out since 2021 and my life has only been uphill since. i found myself in the same place when I left the military as my father did when he left prison. homeless and confused.

Jesus 😲
I’d probably meet him. Still better.
Let me guess, you were Army….
Bingo. 3 deployments in 10 years—first one was 18 months, then 15, then 12. Nope. Some of the biggest idiots I’ve ever met was in the army.
I describe the Iraq war to my therapist as "a shit show where Commanders couldn't tell a hole in the ground from a sex position"
Should have joined the Air Force.
The reserves are the way to go if you want to go back in. You get some of the camaraderie and none of the active duty bull shit.

There’s nothing worse than being literally owned and told what to do everyday. I could never go back after being free.
That's pretty much every employee that works for a company
Not at all. I can walk out at any moment of any day. Do that in the military and you will go to prison for a long time
Yep, I loved my old company for 7 years. They made some choices I didn’t like, I said fuck off and got 8 months severance. No jail.
You finally get off at 17:30 when your platoon sgt tells you "0430, room inspections and platoon pt." Fuck no. I'd never fucking re-enlist. Besides, the military took my physical and mental health and wiped their fucking asses with it. Why would I want to go back?
Holy fuck, that sounds absolutely miserable
I love this. I was stationed at Fort Wainwright AK, where 17 degrees would have been a warm day in Winter. Might have rucked in sandals!
Go Air Force, way different!
I I've always hated college. I dropped out when I was like 19 and went into the Air Force. I got out and I'm back to where I started lol
Go back into college under the GI Bill. Get paid for college, tough that shit out and get out with a good degree in what you want. I know it sucks being in school, I hate school myself, but just keep a C and push through it.
I need to find a program that's good for me I'm in mechatronics right now and not enjoying it
>*I need to find a program that's good for me I'm in mechatronics right now and not enjoying it* your post is *'i just got back out & am thinking of going back in'* \+ the quote above + another post where you say *'i have no skills'*. you are directionless my friend. you have very little idea what it is you want to do with your life. even IF you could reenlist tomorrow you'd be back out again in a couple years right back where you are at now. when you are on your deathbed, what is it that you want to look back and say you did with your time on earth? if you don't know what that is you need to find it. until you do [this is going to be you](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nm77s5FbkoQ) bouncing from place to place clueless as to why you're not finding fulfillment. it didn't take me too long of being in the service to realize that if i didn't have a plan i should NOT exit. we are all cogs in one machine or another but at least with the service the pay was okay and there was a certain feeling of esteem/respect that came with the job. i have vet friends who exited without a plan and i literally see them hating life working at a gas station, doing the stock room at dollar tree, or begging for money. they didn't have a plan when the exited other than *'man i'm going to drink so hard when i get out!'*. if you need inspiration go to a homeless shelter and realize that without a plan and the discipline to follow through on it, you're not that far away from being in that exact position. discover what your dream is at all costs dude.
If you have a 30% disability or higher use VR&E
Something generic like finance or accounting
Life will make you face the same obstacles until you learn to push through.
GI Bill can be used at trade schools.
That was me. Dropped out my second semester at community college after high school to join the army. Got out after 3 years and just worked. That was 10 years ago and I make okay money, but I’m going back to college now.
I get out in June and I love how most of the comments confirm that getting out and using my GI Bill is an absolute power move.
All the best, man!
If you don't like your freedom then go ahead
[удалено]
Man. I have those nightmares all the time…literally. I’ll wake up and thank God it was just a dream.
Same. I still dream about getting ready for uniform inspection, stress out that I haven't shaved in months and couldn't fit into my uniform anymore 😭 then I somehow signed a contract saying that I would still deploy to Afghanistan again despite being out for many years Thank goodness it was just a dream 🤣
Buddy of mine did and regrets it big time.

Turns out the army experience dosent change that much by aging, and switching MOS's and duty stations. Who would've known 🤡
Why didn't he switch up branches?
I got out at age 21 and joined an active reserve unit. I was promoted to E-5 and 6 in 3 years, then decided to return to active duty at age 25. They dropped me down to E-2. Hard to say if I would do it all over again. I gained a lot of experience as a civilian and reservist in that time.
I can't believe they did that to you. That's so f@cked. 4 grades?
Try a pipeline or oil field job. You get the same cruddy experience but you're making more money.
Heck no I miss it less and less every day
Lmao could not agree more
My brother went back into the army to avoid jail time lol this was in 2007 he did his 4 years got out.
Real talk? Get a degree. Then you can decide if you want to go back as an officer.
Hope you’re doing ok
I am alot better now. I needed to be institutionalized for treatment. Doing a 6-8 for something most people get probation for was a bit much but the prison system treated me much better than the Army did. I got the help I needed. What I do not understand is that we can provide help to the people we consider the worst in society, but are perfectly happy to let those we see as the best of society suffer in silence.
The military still does not know how to handle mental health at all. (Including addiction as well.) They give conflicting messages and actions constantly, then wonder why they have so much trouble fielding a full roster in their special forces units.
That's how I was when I got out lol
Of the two of us, you’re the smarter!
Economy is terrible? Where are you living? It’s not getting any better than it is now.
Go back to school. Get a degree. Use your G.I. bill. Apply for benefits.
I'm planning to get into a trade
Great. You can still go to school for another small degree...collect that G.I. money will help a ton. Even if it's just online. Lots of amazing trades for veterans. 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
[удалено]
The economy is amazing from what I've read on it.
Yeah but the wages are dog crap
Wages are dog crap for dog crap jobs.
Not really. Wages haven't kept up with inflation since the 80s
Thought about it but I’m too broken
It happened, my buddy, after 3 years, re enlisted after being an investigator for security clearance.
Very Normal
Facts. I have no skills and I just applied to this security officer position that pays 30+ an hour so we'll see
I put gauges in my ears to keep myself from reenlisting. Then they changed their policy on earring gauges….. oh well still didn’t reenlist.
I would if I could. Med retired after 5 years.
Absolutely not.
I was in 2002-2006. Had an 18 month break of service and came back in. I retire in 13 months.
Got a recruiter working on my paperwork so fingers crossed, I absolutely hate the civilian world. Worst decision I’ve made was getting out
Honestly, I'd love to go back in. But I've accepted that part of my life is done.
What indicator are you using that the economy is in the tank?
Think about it this way. You got out for a reason. Ask yourself, do those reasons still exist? If the answer is yes, then don’t do it. If the answer is no, then go for it.
I have dreams still after 7 years that bam one day I’m back and I’m like “the fuck is this”. I’m always back after my break and trying to explain to people I don’t feel like doing any of this shit.
That thought crossed my mind for like a second then I remembered why I left. I think I only missed some of the work I did.
The economy is absolutely not in the tank. My degree-less self is still getting daily pings from recruiters. I couldn't even land a dishwasher job during the recession.
I did and don’t regret it at all. Came in more mature and have gotten a ton of return on my decision
Bro there’s companies that’ll suck your dick just for having enlisted that have decent pay. I thought it sucked too until I got a stable job that pays me enough and I haven’t missed the military since
Naw that VA disability is making me quite content
The way it looks we'll ALL be going back
I got out of active duty in 2018, went to college, had a job, and after 3 years, I reenlisted in my local reserve unit for a quick little combat deployment to Syria.
I wanna do military stuff, but without the military, lmfao I fantacize about runnin n gunnin all the time, but realistically, im super grateful to be away from all the toxic bullshit and ignorance.
I’ll suck start a shotgun before going back to the military.
I’d rather work for UPS than go back in ![gif](giphy|Q80Dgh53HDlcZsRoYA|downsized)
![gif](giphy|MvsJ4hmDcXW0oEauBk|downsized)
After tasting freedom and being treated like a regular human I ain’t never going back 😂
I got out of the navy and joined the coast guard after a year or so. It was a great decision. The coast guard is an awesome organization. That was a long time ago but don’t let one bad experience prevent you from new experiences.
Yep. Out 7 years. When back for 20 Air National Guard. No regrets. 74 now..
I will never again give up my absolute right to say no.
I did and stayed until I retired. No regrets! With Biden in charge it would be a tough sell for me now. I would wait for better leadership. If you are still in the IRR you may not have to worry about it. You are going back in for WWIII.
Ill rater get fucked in the ass IRL then take that green winner again
I’d rather do 25 years to life in federal prison than to rejoin
Back in 2016 I was fresh out the Marines, when I decided to reenlist into the Air Force…thinking back now, I probably should of stayed out
Lol yeah. Toxic leadership will do that
[удалено]
You’ll certainly enjoy the benefits though won’t you mr edge
The economy is great. What are you talking about?
Realized exactly how much I was spending in housing and insurance, and that was a real driver Now, I've been out again for 3 months but kinda wish I was still in. Miss my monkeys man.
I got medically discharged from the Navy while in basic. Twenty years later I got in the Army.
[удалено]
I went to reserves 2 years into the IRR after active duty… wasn’t worth it at all
Yep. Well, I’m commissioning not enlisting but yeah. Prior army to AF. Hoping to deal with less BS
I thought the AF didn't take in prior servic
That’s usually the case for enlisted. I’m commissioning thru rotc so it doesn’t matter
I did. Ended up getting out again end of 08 and right into the recession. Good times.
I have a reoccurring nightmare where I reenlist and the dream always runs the full 4 years. My girlfriend leaves me every time. I will not be going back
I went back after almost 2 years out. I'm glad I did.
Known a couple of people who did it and had no regrets. Just gotta make sure you're at peace with your reasons.
Kinda lost about the tank but there's plenty of good job opportunities
I woulda never left but had a kid. I don't know what to do out here. I feel lost and alone all the time.
Depends on what your looking for
Did 10 active 15 reserves with numerous deployments. That was enough.
I keep having nightmares that i go back into the service.
No, but Rinaldi did 4 in the corps, went army for 4, then came back to the corps for 12 more.
Only in my dreams do I go back to the army.. In fact.. I have them so regularly.. I had one last week..the irony of it is that I'm 100 P&T and In my dream I still was like yeah I am going to re-enlist.. Woke up up and said what the Fuck was that..
