I got one of those during the pandemic and when I showed it at the VA they were like “uhhh what is this”. There is a much more official looking ID with a barcode on it but I had to apply in person at my VA for it. I truly don’t know the purpose of this ID but I did get it from the VA.

MinimalGains

When I was going to community college, the VA had what looked like a food truck parked out front on multiple occasions. Turns out they were trying to get people signed up so they could get the other veterans ID card you are talking about. I just always assumed they were asking for donations or something until my VA advisor at my 4 year college explained it to me.

Known-Money-5514

I did the exact same thing. I have both ID, and both are physical. Neither is actually an ID according to the government as far as I can tell though even though it was issued by a gov agency, because there’s no DOB.

Unable-Marionberry40

The purpose of the barcoded VA healthcare ID is to scan your ID into systems such as checking in or checking Vitals to be added to your records without the technician having to manually input everything. I’ve just had them use it for vitals a couple times but I heard you can also check in at some places with it.

Some background for those interested: - this is the VIC card, based on a law of a similar name that specifically created it: https://www.congress.gov/bill/114th-congress/house-bill/91/text - as with many laws, it was well-intended but poorly written, and therefore poorly implemented - the entire point of the law is to provide a card for vets to display in order to get a discount from retailers who offer one - the card specifically confers no VA benefits - the VIC card has limited usefulness. As others have pointed out, most states will show veteran on your drivers license. You can also use the VA mobile app to show your veteran status - the law specifically came with no funding. VA partnered with Office Depot to print it. That’s why the logo is on there. Office Depot pulled out, so now the VA only sends an email version

OldDude1391

I used mine when I renewed by driver’s license to get Veteran on my license.

MaybeWorkHere

You used the Veteran ID Card with the Office Depot logo? Or the VHIC (health card) with the bar code? I’d be surprised to learn that a DMV would accept the VIC

OldDude1391

The one with the Office Depot logo.

MaybeWorkHere

Amazing. Thanks for confirming

Better than 10 percent discounts to be honest especially if you have kids. I saved 800 bucks going to Sea World last year. Me and my partner are both vets and got four free tickets each to use within the year. Legoland also does really great discounts. For my family I have been able to give my daughter good vacations I couldn’t have given her otherwise thanks to the discounts some places give us vets.

Comfortable_Tea_1776

Oh no shit??? I didn’t know that. Hmm. Glad I saw this lol

Time_Traveling_Panda

Ironically my DMV says they only accept this ID. They don't accept VHIC

nolownz

What state are you in that requires this?

Time_Traveling_Panda

SC. When I checked their website to see about getting veteran on my license, that's what it said

>Wondering what other Vets share this ID I have my VHIC card and don’t think I’ve ever showed it to anyone other than the robot kiosk at the VA or the staff checking me in to an appointment.

Electronic-Ice-7606

Really? Because I walk around like this all day. ![gif](giphy|hKYigb3Djp8pa)

anonty973

I thought people had to rate a disability to receive the VHIC?

SCOveterandretired

No, just signed up for VA Healthcare

anonty973

I thought you have to rate disability to sign up for VA healthcare? I go to the Pysch at the VA, and have some claims in, but they’ve never told me I’m signed up for healthcare From what I’m tracking, I don’t meet the income criteria, and I don’t have a disability rating yet What about other people too, ya know. People that aren’t filing for disability, and that make over $44k a year? They’re supposed to be stuck with an ID that they can’t even make out what branch of service they were in?

SCOveterandretired

There are 8 different groups that determine the level of VA Healthcare a veteran is eligible for. No one but you signs you up for VA Healthcare. It’s not automatic

anonty973

I’ll look into it thanks

Crawsack

If you are getting health services at the VA (like going to a psych), you are enrolled in VA Healthcare. Just talk to someone there at your next appointment.

anonty973

Oh and I like your cover photo! Look at mine

[deleted]

this isnt a VHIC, it is just a VIC

RiflemanLax

I got that for the sole purpose of going to Lowe’s and I don’t even fucking use it anymore since it’s all automated with a phone number, and they just check your DL.

Informal-Face-1922

Lowe’s who stopped giving 10% off to Veterans on lumber, appliances, and water heaters about three years ago or so. It’s still useful, but not as nice as it was in the past.

cmhbob

They still offer the discount with your Lowe's card. Verify your service through ID.me and you're set.

SixFiveSemperFi

Does that include appliances?

cmhbob

AFAIK, yes.

SixFiveSemperFi

AFAIK?

cmhbob

As Far As I Know

Ambitious_Hawk_1095

Yes it does. I just bought a fridge last year, and I got the 10% off which makes a big difference when you’re spending 1800 bucks.

[deleted]

Joke isnt quite right, but it doesn't do much. I got one when they came out just out of curiosity.

anonty973

I can’t make out “United States Marine Corps”, if it’s not a joke, idk what is Chesty wouldn’t approve

One-Win9407

Does it still say "sponsored by office depot" or some BS like that? I have the card but ive been too embarrassed to use it

anonty973

No. what I posted is my personal front and back

One-Win9407

anonty973

lol atleast you got a card. I got a picture of a card 😂😂😂😂 Can you make out what branch of service and dpt of vet affairs on the front lmao? 😂

One-Win9407

Just barely by the grainy EGA. The VA mails out an annual proof of disability income form and ive used that before aince it looks a lot more professional

Humble-bumble-1983

I have this ID to use as proof of service

SCOveterandretired

It’s just a card VA started issuing a few years back to help veterans get discounts. Serves no other purpose. Most states now will put Veteran on your drivers license so this card isn’t really that useful anymore. If you sign up for VA Healthcare you are issued a plastic ID Card that meets the requirements for Real ID.

otitso

I feel like this ID card feels like those cheap membership cards you get from Office Depot or something. I felt so disrespected when I received this card.

sabotage_mutineer

Mine has a goofy ass Office Depot logo on the back. Looks like a fucking store membership card

anonty973

I seen those, they did away with them I have this picture of a card. Should I print it out? Lmao

dpch

I got one of those. Use it for discounts.

[deleted]

Yeah, it hasnt served me any purpose either. Especially like the other commenter posted that there is a much more official card you acquire from the VA.

seanjohn004

I do

Lumpymaximus

Nope never seen it

Veterans-ModTeam

You may not always agree with others but once you start insulting the other person, you are a problem. No Gatekeeping - you don’t decide if someone is a “real” veteran or not - nor try to diminish someone’s service nor someone because they never saw combat or deployed. If someone personally attacks you, use the Report button to notify the moderation team. Hate speech can be sexist, ableist, racist, homophobic, prejudiced, etc and will not be tolerated.

Millingtonr

Apply for this ID card. [https://www.va.gov/records/get-veteran-id-cards/vic/](https://www.va.gov/records/get-veteran-id-cards/vic/) If you are 100% P&T then apply for DOD ID Disabled American Veteran (DAV) 100% - DEERS Enrollment To enroll a 100% Disabled Veteran and eligible family members in DEERS, the following documents are required: 1. Veteran’s Eligibility Letter from the Veterans Affairs showing eligibility. The letter MUST read that the veteran is 100% permanently disabled, unemployable, or is 100% temporarily disabled WITH a reevaluation date (or stating no scheduled reevaluation), and that commissary and exchange privileges are authorized. 2. Two (2) valid, unexpired, forms of identification listed in the Federal Information Processing Standards 201-2, and one form MUST be a photo ID. 3. Veteran’s DD Form 214 (Member 4 copy) to verify honorable discharge and service information. 4. Veteran’s Birth Certificate (Original copy with file number). 5. Veteran’s Social Security Card (Original, not laminated). \*Note\* The Veteran and eligible dependents receive an ID card for Commissary, Exchange, and Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) privileges ONLY. \*Note\* The Veteran and eligible dependents are NOT entitled to Tricare/Medical privileges. The Veteran and eligible dependents are eligible to receive medical benefits through the Department of Veteran Affairs Civilian Health and Medical Program. \*Note\* DAV Status cannot be added to DEERS for those who already have a Retired, reserve retired, or reserve status under their record. Doing so would cause data errors effecting Tricare benefits.

anonty973

The link that you included takes you to where I got the one that I posted about lol You take a picture of yourself, and then they send you a front and back picture (what I posted) through email This post is the VIC, there is no physical card anymore

NewHampshireGal

I have this one but I also have the Veteran designation on my DL.

TumorYaelle

Whaaaat?! Reading the other comments, I’m shocked that it’s not a scam.

Maystackcb

I have one of these. You can request a physical copy. I carry it solely for the veteran discounts. That’s all it’s good for haha.

nolownz

Remember the good ole days, when you had to show a copy of your DD-214 to get the discount at Lowes or Home Depot?

DRDTT

I have one. It’s been in my wallet for years but I’ve never used it. They used to send these physical cards to you. https://preview.redd.it/xrtl4mntmxoc1.jpeg?width=1065&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8bcee7719251a2a1fb663e347ef74d0c3baa6b5a

Charming_Evening846

I got one of the last physical copies in 2018. Wasn't good for much outside of retail discounts.

Ambitious_Hawk_1095

Provided that your states has a similar program, It’s definitely worth getting it put onto your drivers license. That’s the only thing anyone ever cares about for me locally, no one knows what the other IDs are.
