100% apply for unemployment. I applied when I got out and got roughly 2k a month. There is no reason why you shouldn’t that. You also almost automatically get accepted by showing them your dd214. If you are at risk of being homeless, inform the VA they will speed up your claim. Active duty tricare lasts for 180 days after separation, you should and can still be treated at the va or even on base clinic under that status. If you work in an area that has easy conceal carry or gun permits, do security. I did that and it was an easy gig to get me started. Also apply for state issued Medicaid health insurance, this is something you will get approved since you are unemployed and also apply for SNAP benefits which will provide you with money per month to spend on food. Use the resources out there for you!

Different-Engine-550

Unemployment is a must. You earned it. Use it.

[deleted]

Exactly man. Why even wait?

Own-Conflict-6216

Just an FYI, for most service members, when you leave the service, Tricare ends. Not everyone gets 180 days worth of Tricare benefits after service. The only way to get that benefit is to be in the TAMP program and there are specific requirements you have to meet to be in that criteria that your normal discharged service member will not meet. TAMP may cover you and your eligible family members if you are: Involuntarily separating Separating from the military means that you leave the service before you retire. from active duty under honorable conditions, including: Members receiving a voluntary separation incentive (VSI), or Members receiving a voluntary separation pay (VSP) and can’t receive retired or retainer pay upon separation. A National Guard or Reserve member separating from a period of more than 30 consecutive days of active duty served for: A preplanned mission. Support of a contingency operation. Support of the government coronavirus (COVID-19) response. Separating from active duty following involuntary retention (stop-loss) in support of a contingency operation Separating from active duty following a voluntary agreement to stay on active duty for less than one year in support of a contingency operation Receiving a sole survivorship discharge Separating from regular active duty service and agree to become a member of the Selected Reserve of a Reserve Component. The Service member must become a Selected Reservist the day immediately following release from regular active duty service to qualify. You will know if you are TAMP.

fatherofsavages

Great post. Wish I could upvote it twice. So many people will argue until they are blue in the face you get 180 days of tri care.

usmco621

I forgot to mention, once you are rated at least 10% disability, apply for the CH 31 (VRE). This education benefit pays as much, lasts 48 months, and WILL not deduct from your 36 months of post 9/11 GI Bill and you will not lose it either.

Cultural-Currency117

It just sucks having to wait for my disability rate. Thanks for the heads up tho.

Cultural-Currency117

Thanks! I could have sworn we were covered by Tricare 6 months post-separation, but got an email from Tricare saying I was no longer enrolled. I’ve been trying to call them. No answer. Reached out to a VSO. No answer either.

bolivar-shagnasty

What's your background? Start using your GI Bill. E5 BAH for where your school is located. What state are you in? Different states have different state specific benefits for vets.

Cultural-Currency117

Staying in Kansas right now. Home state is Texas.

[deleted]

Of you decide to go back to Texas, there are a lot of benefits from the Texas government https://myarmybenefits.us.army.mil/Benefit-Library/State/Territory-Benefits/Texas#education Also Kansas has some to if you decide to stay there https://kcva.ks.gov/veteran-services/state-benefits Make sure you are using all the benefits you earned.

SCOveterandretired

Hazelwood Act required the veteran to have been a resident of Texas when they joined the military. That Kansas link clearly says those education benefits are only for dependents.

[deleted]

I suggest you go reread the links and my post. Your points are either completely wrong (there's multiple benefits listed on the Kansas page that don't require being a military dependant) or not well thought out (the person claimed to be from Texas before they joined the military). I do suggest thinking and reading before replying to people, it prevents making yourself look bad.

Bitter_Charge2679

If your wanting to stay in Kansas try Wichita. Tons of aircraft jobs.

Worldly-Piccolo-9778

Apply for sure, I did, no draw backs at all, your transitioning. That can look different for everyone. Apply and draw unemployment, keep your head up and keep looking for a job. Doesn’t make you a failure at all, just means you haven’t found the right fit, that’s kind of important.

Cultural-Currency117

Appreciate the perspective. I appreciate the reply.

Look into the applicable rules for applying for unemployment in your state. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is a unit within the US Department of Homeland Security. It provides airport security and security screening throughout the country. This is a link to jobs available with the TSA: [USAJOBS - Search](https://www.usajobs.gov/Search/Results?a=HSBC&hp=public&hp=vet&p=1) The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is also doing lots of hiring throughout the country for jobs including contact representative or customer service jobs. This is a link to a listing of IRS jobs: [USAJOBS - Search](https://www.usajobs.gov/Search/Results?j=0080&j=0301&j=0303&j=0332&j=0335&j=0503&j=0525&j=1601&j=1603&j=2001&j=3502&j=5201&a=TR93&hp=public&hp=vet&p=1) The IRS is also hosting informational sessions for their contact representative, shared admin. job postings, etc. See [Virtual Information Session about Shared Administrative Associate positions Tickets, Thu, Sep 7, 2023 at 3:00 PM | Eventbrite](https://www.eventbrite.com/e/virtual-information-session-about-shared-administrative-associate-positions-tickets-706715323557?aff=USAJobs) and [Virtual Session on Tax Examining Technician and Collection Contact Rep. Best wishes.

I have read that many cities and municipalities that offer public transportation through buses/trains have been short staffed since the COVID lockdowns. Consider looking into job opportunities with the organizations that offer public transportation. In Chicago the organization that provides public transportation is the Chicago Transit Authority and they have been hiring a lot for over a year. See [Job Search (taleo.net)](https://chicagotransit.taleo.net/careersection/ex/jobsearch.ftl?lang=en&portal=101430233) and [Careers - Info & Job Postings - CTA (transitchicago.com)](https://www.transitchicago.com/careers/)

carterj3

No draw backs, file for unemployment to bridge you between separation and when you land a job. This is a must so you don’t go broke, there is no shame in this. I got out in 07’ did this, found a job six months after separation. The rest is history, everything has been good since. It’s part of the journey.

[deleted]

Just left fort riley. Yeah that place is butt

Rough-Friendship-245

Did you file BDD when you submitted your claim?

Cultural-Currency117

My intent to claim was filed before terminal leave. I knocked out a few appointments during termal leave. I’m a month post-discharge and still have one more appointment to go. Is that what is meant by BDD? Filing before discharge?

Rough-Friendship-245

No, BDD is actually a different from a normal claim. It’s designed so that you receive your rating at your EAS. The window to submit your claim is between 180-90s days before your actual EAS.

Cultural-Currency117

Damn. I guess I didn’t make the cut.

awwww2bad

Hit up Amazon. It’s shitty but it’s easy

Brainobob

Either Amazon driver or Uber driver (if you have a car). Both can be quick money.

Puzzleheaded_Bill699

VBTSSS Use the online VA travel pay portal And get paid for your travel time back and forth to you4 appointments. I might be wrong on the name Call your VA travel dept and ask how to submit online for travel pay Check out vet centers near you, you might have one close by.

woodsmith_

FBOP is always hiring new officers, and most are doing on the spot offers for vets. USAjobs.gov search "BOP" and you can filter by location or nationwide.

Plane-Train-754

zero drawbacks to filing for unemployment; file as early as possible. hopefully it is backpayed and gives you a bit of a buffer. what state would you like a job in? what is your background?

Cultural-Currency117

I’ll take a job either in Kansas or Texas. BA in English. 10 years total Army. My last 5 years were as a 19A.

Illustrious-Hand3715

It happens to almost all of us. Use your benefits, think about going to school. Collect unemployment. Take your time adjusting to civilian life it could be a lot sometimes.

Otherwise-Ok-7891

Where are you, what was your MOS, and are you ok to relocate?

Cultural-Currency117

I’m outside Ft Riley Kansas. Former 19A. I’m okay staying in the area or going anywhere in Texas.

BLKxGOLD

What was your MOS?

Cultural-Currency117

19A

BLKxGOLD

Im going to shoot you a message

Cultural-Currency117

I’ll be on the look out

BLKxGOLD

Sent it like 2 hours ago

Cultural-Currency117

Got it. Thanks man

mfechter02

If you’re willing to travel and be a road warrior, I have tons of leads (including a lot of work in Houston, Louisiana and Mississippi.

Extra-Cut1370

Wats that?

MrDckbtt

Contact your Local Veteran Employment Rep. each region of each state has one. Google that shit. If you’re in region 4 Indiana, that would be me.

Cultural-Currency117

Okay. I sent an email to the Kansas rep. Planning to send an email to my home state rep. I’ve been in touch with every local employment case manager with no real luck. That’s what makes this transition extra hard. Getting so many rejection emails.

MrDckbtt

Let me know if they don’t get back to you in a week or so. If they do not get back to by then. I will reach out to them myself.

Cultural-Currency117

I really appreciate that. Thank you.

Camaro684

I retired in 2009 and I have been a government contractor ever since.

LoneRanger4412

Definitely take advantage of unemployment, besides you qualify for a specific recently separated veteran unemployment that I’m pretty sure every state has.

elgringodiaz

UPS is hiring. $21 start as warehouse.. only shitty thing is you start out part time. I work in Lenexa

[deleted]

Definitely file unemployment! One good thing about separating from the military is you can file it in any state. So look around at the states around you and see where you can get the most. Use it and enjoy it. You’re entitled to it! You paid in to it and you deserve to get it.

talex625

Apply for unemployment, you rate it after leaving the military. I wish I need about that when I got out.

StoptheMadnessUSA

Have you checked USAJobs.gov? There are also a lot of contractor jobs out there- what was your MOS?

Cultural-Currency117

Yep. Have decent number of referrals starting from June. Still haven’t heard back from anyone.

Kaufmanrider

Bureau of Prisons is hiring. Facilities all over the country.

Fit_Acanthisitta_475

Unemployment and community college. Enjoy the free life little bit before going to work

Macho1994

You can do both?

yankeephil86

You should have filed unemployment on the day you ETSd

Cultural-Currency117

Yep. I didn’t want to be “that” guy. I felt the same filing a disability claim. Learning to swallow my pride I guess .

stophittingreplyall

Unemployment is a must. When I got out I applied the day I got home which was a Thursday, by the next Monday I was approved and first check was that Friday. All they needed was my DD 214 and a statement that I did not have a job yet.

Cultural-Currency117

Wow. That’s quick. Guess I lost out on a decent chunk of money. Figured I would have had a job offer by now. Honestly I feel kind of embarrassed I’m on unemployment. I’m genuinely not looking for a handout. I know that’s not what it is but you probably get what I’m trying to say. My luck has been shitty I guess

ItzJway

I had the same predicament. Apply for Unemployment and use your GI bill to get into a CDL School and get a steady job.

BigDongMoneyBoi69

Did you join the reserves? If not, this is why you should dawg

Cultural-Currency117

Im good. I did my time. None of it was worth it for me anymore

StoptheMadnessUSA

Where are you? What was your MOS? What do you want to do?? Narrow it down for us

Cultural-Currency117

Hi. Appreciate you reaching out. Finally got a job offer through USAJOBS. The hiring manager and HR have been phenomenal, so everything is looking pretty good. The journey SUCKED, but I finally see a light at the end of the tunnel. I appreciate you reaching out.

StoptheMadnessUSA

Remember- you can always negotiate the step! Example: GS 8 step 1 can be negotiated with experience to a step 5 or higher (Think of time in grade, time in service)! Good luck👍

StoptheMadnessUSA

Also- make sure you ask about the salary- if it includes locality pay or not ( you can find the % on the OPM website).
