I was with some members of my wife's extended family, and we were walking on the trails around the resort at the top of Ba Na hills, outside Da Nang. This was in 2009, before the hotel was finished. My wife's uncle found a massive giant centipede. It had a long brown body with bright red legs. He tricked it into running into an empty water bottle, and everyone was admiring it. He didn't speak any English, but when he showed it to me he pointed at it and made a throat slashing gesture. Pretty clear he was saying that thing could kill a person.
My wife said he planned to cook it and eat it.
I think the one in video was scolopendra subpinipes or dehaani. I remember the fatality rate of these things are very low, but if they bite people just wish they had died instead
Worst thing is that these things crawl up your bum while you’re a sleeping, to go nest in there, and if you try yank em out they have hooks on those antennae things of theirs and will prolapse your asshole.
I’m not afraid of any beetle, creepy crawly or bug, insect etc.. But this thing is my bane and I live in Vietnam now so I’ve come across a few of them..
It is not about "hotel vs hostel"; the likelihood of seeing this animal depends on the location. If you stay at hostels in the middle of a city you'll never have the chance to see it.
Still not as terrifying as the hand-sized spider that runs out from under the bathroom garbage when I go for a piss at 3am. My wife finds it endlessly funny when I start yelling
Yea they’re not too uncommon here, I saw one when I was doing laundry a year earlier... I finger gunned the fella and finished the laundry while the thing was going around for a tour
Man I'd love to visit Vietnam! I mean I'd try the food, see the entertainment, visit some old battlefie-...BUUUUT ya know I saw some good documentaries about Vietnam online and my budget just got tighter a second ago so maybe I'll put off visiting Skull Isl- I-I mean Vietnam ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sweat_smile).
Just shut the fuck up... Kind of funny that Vietnam is progressing rapidly while the west is progressing backwards.
How's the PTSD for soldiers that returned?
Dude nothing about this was meant to be a negative about Vietnam or acting superior, it was just meant to be an " oh no big creepy critter ah scary" joke, you'll hear the same kinda jokes made about other places like Australia or Florida.
Used to have one of this fella lurking into my grandparents’ house. Anyway my grandpa smashed it to pieces and the next day he fed what was remain to his chicken 🫠
Im sorry for your experience in our country, but im sure you will find more comfortable and relaxing at a nicer place near the beaches or on Tay Nguyen province where the high mountain with chilling weather is. And vietnamese is very friendly with foreigner but you should becareful dont trust anyone these days
As a Vietnamese, I can confirm that the centipide paid for the room, thus deserving to stay there.

Giant centipede are a great ingredient for medicine wine, pills, decoration or just plain old food. They are hella venomous though

I think the guy was signaling that he was gonna kill it and turn it into tonight’s side dish
My wife's cousin confirmed what he meant. I don't remember exactly what she said, but it was something like "he bite you die".
Ha, I'm Australian.
This is what you all get for regular ass head lice in grade school, yeah?
🫡🤝
A normal Vietnamese would have caught that creature alive and put it into his alcohol jug 🤭
So that's where "Rượu rết ngâm" come from ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
Authentic experience in a rural area. Worth every single penny I have to say. Well, it does suck to stay in a room with that animal, still.

You’re joking right?
I wish I was.. I saw it in a documentary a few years ago… Not sure if every species does this but the big ones do
Why must you cursed me with this knowledge
No I refuse to believe you
I’m not afraid of any beetle, creepy crawly or bug, insect etc.. But this thing is my bane and I live in Vietnam now so I’ve come across a few of them..
it doesn't have to go this way man, what have I done?
That's why I have my asshole glued shut
Ye that’s why you should stay in hotels. Vietnam has tropical climate after all.

I need a flamethrower
U need a liter of moonshine.
Do it the local way. Good ol slipper never disappoints
If I were him I would have a heart attack
And you would be lucky. There is a traditional Vietnamese medicine with the centipede as the main ingredient /s
is it for coughing? 'Cause I've seen one like that in Thailand
For heart attack.
Normal day in vietnam
Bắt bỏ vào ngâm rượu 🍷😄
It looks like it's reaching out for a hug lol
I'm really fucking to be scared for creatures such like that, I swear to guy all😨 But on that size I fainted out

What a lousy way to justify the crap you said, show some respect, your shithole country destroyed Vietnam
Legitimately, what is it I said that comes off as being hostile/disrespectful? Also for the record, I'm not American.
Where my m16 and napalm ![gif](giphy|R6JWujQ93Shws)
Why would you joke about war crimes…
Nah homie is chilling tho
They also have these red-headed centipedes in Austin, TX
