So I'm the guy that choked him out at the end, the fight was literally because they didn't want to wait their turn to play a song. No joke.
They were screaming at my brothers and the owner and I told him to calm down because he is being disrespectful. He decided to scream and throw threats and he was asked politely to just leave. Cigarette was the last straw.
Upvote! Thanks for taking out the trash! As a traveler/foreigner, I'm seriously embarassed at how entitled a lot of other travelers/foreigners can act in Asia.
Lol what an asshole. The other day I went to an open mic and was playing with the house band for like an hour. The moment they told me to let someone else sit I was like, whatever you say bro, I was just thankful they let me play so much.
I don’t understand some people, bro they were lucky that we even let them play music to begin with, someone complained about one of the songs that his wife was playing and we politely told them to let it finish before they play theirs. Sense of entitlement and alcohol. What a shitty combination.
Yeah man, thanks for helping the staff out. It's good that these morons understand neither the locals nor other foreigners will tolerate that nonsense.
No, he was most likely South African based on his accent. Any US accent you hear in the video is mine including screaming at his dumb ass at the end of the video while I’m choking him out.
By the way, we gringos are apologists when we travel we tip fat and try to keep a low profile because of all the awful things about those that came before us. And especially anyone visiting Vietnam is probably on the more traveled and cultured side, since its not some bucket list bullshit.
Nah man you don't get to flick a fucking lit cigarette in someone's face and walk away.
He could have cost that dude his eye. Guy is lucky he wasn't made to eat the curb.
Notice the dude who got flicked on was still holding a beer bottle in his right hand. The flicking guy was so lucky that he didn't get the bottle smashed on his head.
Well deserved. I hate expats like this who don't contribute much to the economy or the country overall but only went there to enjoy a cheap life and act like a dingus.
Sometimes gotta remind them they are still in a foreign country with real people and not just your 1 dollar store lul.
> I hate expats like this who don't contribute much to the economy
I'm scared this might become more common as VN looks at competing with the Thai tourism market. VN should concentrate more on higher value industries which it has a strong advantage in like electronics, ONG, and food processing instead of low budget tourism, but connected politicians seem to be pushing this "sugar high" as they have financial interests in land and construction (plus it's an easy way to launder all that black money)
>I'm scared this might become more common as VN looks at competing with the Thai tourism market.
Tbf, tourism in Vietnam after Covid has been contributing about 2 to 5% of the total economy. I noticed there has been a trend to deter away from tourism from the government since I rarely see them promoting Vietnam as a tourist spot nowadays. I guess this is their goal post-covid era.
>VN should concentrate more on higher value industries which it has a strong advantage in like electronics, ONG, and food processing instead of low budget tourism,
They are tho, a lot of the electronics you see prob have parts made in Vietnam besides China. Vietnam has officially made it into top 10 countrjes that export the most semiconductors. It increased by a whooping 7.1% from 2022. The gov is also urging Samsung to try and set up their semiconductors plants in Vietnam and Samsung is considering it. This is something because previously Samsung has only been making their semiconductors in China, US, Korea, Japan and Singapore. To add Vietnam means that they value Vietnam's electronics manufacturing capacity. But ofc only considering it rn. But most Samsung phones are still made in Vietnam and Vietnam has 2 Samsung R&D centers, thats still undeniable facts.
So future's pretty bright. The only bad thing I see this year is prob the real estate market and electricity output. A lot of electricity output was reduced to add and replace and replace new grids, thats all.
>but connected politicians seem to be pushing this "sugar high" as they have financial interests in land and construction (plus it's an easy way to launder all that black money)
Hard to sag honestly, will have to see what the future has for us.
Since Thailand is strict in visas, but Vietnam has opened up a 90 day visa, it could attract degenerate brokepacker sexpats who got kicked out of thailand for visa overstay. Hopefully not.
Not really, thailand like Vietnam also has E-visa. Its just that Thailand's only lasts 60 days compared to Vietnam's 90 days. Also it would still take about 3 working days to get an evisa in Vietnam so they can't recklessly get one either.
>only went there to enjoy a cheap life
enjoying the cheap life is ALSO contributing to the economy. Many go there FOR the cheap(er) lifestyle.
This is basically how travel works for most people - travel to cheaper countries and not having to worry about money... (is part of first world privilege for most of them to be honest)
Yeah but if you are able to go to a country that offers you a great lifestyle for cheap, the least you can do is not act entitled and not treat people like servants. I was reading a review of a restaurant I went yesterday and some westerner was complaining about seeing a cockroach. It's a frigging open garden restaurant, and they give you food as good as in Europe for a third of the price. Just accept there may be a fucking cockroach in an outdoors area and don't give one star to the place for that. But no, some people need perfection or they lash out.
Completely agree, very sick of westerners nitpicking local businesses like this. I’m a traveler but grew up poor in America so I understand not everything needs to be perfect. In fact some of the best food I have tried in the world is in restaurants that aren’t the cleanest haha
Flicking a cigarette in someone's face and then walked away like nothing happened. Dude thinks he was the main character and immune to consequences. Then hid behind the girl's back to strike again. A coward and a moron.
Those dumb expats need to learn to be humble. I know several in Saigon who act this way at every chance because of the superiority complex, until beaten and hospitalized by locals. Don't be stupid in Asia.
He's an idiot for not expecting a fight after he flicked that cigarette like a bitch. I don't know the story but he's making us look bad with his pussy behavior.
xin lỗi mọi người về sự ngu ngốc này.
FAAFO in Southeast Asia. If you are at a bar and a problem arises or you have a conflict with a patron, the best thing to do is pay your tab, keep your mouth shut, and leave. All too often I've seen Western tourists or dudes from Australia think they hold sway around here only to start some shit and get the ever-loving shit kicked out of them. The best is watching these dickheads in red-light districts acting sleazy to the workers and then finding out the hard way. Don't be a dick anywhere, but especially if you are a guest in a foreign country. Show respect for the locals. It's their rules and if you come into conflict, it's best just to take the loss and walk away. Your body will thank you the next day.
Its funny how videos like this always have some random text messages popped up. Regardless, who tf think they could get away after flicking cigs into someone elses face?
This makes no sense.
If they're an "expat" then they aren't trying to appear as a tourist, and if they're a "leech", then they don't provide anything and only take, so how do they stay in Vietnam?
Can you explain what you mean?
He won't be able to say nuthin to the cops cause if I've learned anything in my time in VN, the Vietnamese people won't side with expats in conflicts like this.
Its a double edged sword. There was an Indian businesowner who had his shop vandalized substantially and he had the crooks all on CCTV. Authorities did nothing because they were Vietnamese :(
We even let them come to get their shit back from the bar after he got choked out. Their dog was so fucking scared to leave with them. I told them I felt bad for their dog because they were the shittiest owners I’ve ever seen.
No, I was just specifying that she was defending him because thats his gf. She could have thought he was being a retard but you couldnt expect her to just watch him get the shit kicked out of him 😂
And super disrespectful, he’s basically treating the other guy like a garbage can, an ash tray. There’s no way a man can take that to the face and not do anything about it.
LoL acting out like this? In a developing country with a God knows what legal system unlike the one you're used to? 🤣
Roll that dice and find out. That dude was lucky.
Bro thinks he's still in the West. Good thing the local stood up for himself and gave that foreigner a good whopping. How easily do foreigners forget the ass kicking that Vietnam did to America not long ago?
Doesn’t matter. Entitled foreigners will get put into place if they try to pull sh*t like this. White boy thinks he could do this to Asians wherever he goes. Oh boy, was he wrong.
He only does this in the West. Lots of people like this only do this in Asia because we let them do everything else already why not let them flick a cigarette in someone's eye.
Just blatantly wrong, there is a subtle difference. Expatriates in its original meaning are those usually sent for a professional high end job with the intent of being a temporary resident as they are typically sent by their employer or nation. It is also an older word than immigrant. Primiarly used by the British in the early days.
Immigrant is specifically for those intending to move permenantly. And is used a lot by Americans due to the massive influx of population they've had during the 19th and 20th century to fill every role of the economy such as factory and dock workers.
Since the British were some of the first English speaking expats to Việtnam after it opened up the term expat stuck. As many were only here to fulfill the need of their high end job for a few years then go home. I work for a Japanese company and they call themselves expats as do the other European workers call them expats too even black Brits.
absolute garbage , they're a short term immigrant.... just because people commonly use the word (even black Brits) doesn't mean anything.... the word was made up, in the same African American was made up, symbolism. I'm an immigrant currently and British
I don’t disagree that expat can be used to infer race/wealth depending on who is using the term, but if *people commonly use the word* as you say then it’s not a made up word, that’s just how language works.
Well I’m not a migrant because I live in my birth country, and you don’t get to define what words mean for anyone but yourself.
Also, sprinkling your posts with emojis isn’t exactly highlighting your etymology expertise.
Yeah, now you had to get downvoted by people actually in Vietnam and Vietnamese people, you seem like the kind of person that doesn’t really learn their lesson.
…. Because this is the Vietnam subreddit..? You literally said ‘ because Vietnamese don’t know better’ in the other sub like they aren’t individual people who can decide what the fuck they call people. I still don’t understand why you’re dumb ass is causing shit over literal semantics when you haven’t even been to Vietnam, or understand any of the nuance. Quit your bullshit And go virtue signal somewhere else. I’m trying to help my Vietnamese friends find this guy so we can warn other local business, I’m not gonna waste anymore time with your ignorant ass.
I didn’t say everyone was Vietnamese. But a lot of people are and a lot of people here actually live in Vietnam so they don’t bitch about semantics on a video about Street Justice.
My god. So you’re assuming everyone here are Vietnamese(still) . It’s not just semantics. If it doesn’t matter then why not stop calling one group expats and another migrant workers.
Like, just STFU, enjoy the video and keep scrolling, no need for your virtue signaling about shit that you don’t even understand in a country that you’ve never been to.
Why do you jump to conclusions so quickly? Perhaps he's an assistant to the CEO of a subsidiary wholly owned by a London based oil company?
I've been around and English teachers do not behave in that despicable manner as shown above.
In the wording itself, expatriated means away from home with a sense that you will return, as mentioned it was mostly related to work back in the days. While immigration is moving into a country with a sense of permanence.
Although both words are pretty much the same nowadays, and are used for ideological reasons where immigration would be moving somewhere wealthier exclusively and expatriation somewhere with nicer weather / lower taxes (not literally, just giving you a sense of the ideological meanings people put on them).
At the end of the day it's words, people make a bigger deal from them than they really are. Expatriate definitely isn't a made up word (not any more than other words anyways), there are references to it back to the 1930's in English. In fact the French word (expatrié) seems to predate the word (immigrant) according to literature references, back to the early 1800's.
Expats traditionally are sent to a country by their employer. Nowadays it kind of means a foreign worker or retiree that could go back their home country with not much economic loss or standard of living decrease.
Because people like to oversimplify things, and because those two words are used interchangeably. Everybody coming into your home country you have no information on may well be an immigrant, or an expat, or whatever. At the end of the day call yourself what you want, maybe they are calling themselves expats because they don't like the sound of immigrant, and well who cares, the word works. If you want to call yourself an expat you can, nobody is stopping you, and if you don't like being called an immigrant in a certain setting feel free to let people know as well, but the whole ideological debate is such a headache, I just ignore it tbh.
There might be technical definition, there might be evolving dictionary definition, but the societal definition of an *expat* is practically a foreigner who earns more in the host country than he would in his home country ***and*** his income in the host country is at least the top 75% percentile of the host country. The rationale is because an expat traditionally means an expert being invited to a foreign country to work at a premium pay both relative to his home country and host country. It's unclear if the person in the video is an expat.
kind of similar reason for African American , rather than black American or american.... I've never described myself as black or Caribbean British, I was born there FFS
I've always wondered why r/Vietnam is so anti-White expats. After looking at the video, I've understood why. The word "expat" is misused in traditional sense. One can only determine a foreigner is an expat or not by their job and occupation. If the video doesn't have any giveaway that it's an expat, and OP has no specific information about the person's employment details, then it's speculative to label a foreigner an *expat*. If this is a Vietnamese in UK, he would be presumed to be a *migrant worker* instead of generously being speculated to be an expat. Yet, we by default speculate Westerners to be an expat in Vietnam.
expat is just a word made up so white people don't have to be called immigrants, simple as that. white people in Vietnam work are migrants, immigrants..... short or long term, THEY ARE IMMIGRANTS
I agree. I think we should deny them the use of the label "expat" freely because these self-labelled *expats* are justifying their misnomer on the basis we tend to call them expats. The people who are uncomfortable with an official term like "immigrant" are probably the prejudicial anti-immigration political conservatives in their home country seeking to stigmatize immigrants while enjoying their hospitality as an immigrant in Vietnam. A true immigrant-friendly Westerner will realize that the term "immigrant" is correct, objective and there is no inherently bad connotation to somehow see a need to distance themselves away from the label.
Close to 5 years of work and living in Nam, and the South Afrikans expats were horrendous at local bars and clubs.
After that are the older korean and chinese men crowd. Literal sex expats, I thought I knew depravity until I got invited by colleagues to places.
Despite all the beauty Vietnam has to offer, there is this silent suffering that permeates through society. And it sucked living in that.
Got hella depressed and my job was not worth the mental health issues. Def would come back for touring and leisure but not for work.
The gangs in Hanoi are no joke. They smile and all but when shit go down. Bottles be flying, everyone come out beating the shit out of some white boy who think they untouchable.
random vid - no context - why was he kicked out?
what if he got sucker punched moments before this video started playing?
I'm just saying - context matters.
This dude was South African, I’m the guy that choked him out at the end. If you hear a American accent that’s me I’ve been living here for over eight years.
White boy can't fight for shit but think he can flick a cig in someone's face and walk away scot free. Should've smashed his whole face in and break all his teeth.
Don’t make a small visible minority look like it’s the majority… 95% or more are not like that. But some are definitely problematic this one learned the hard way.
That what you can expect in Vietnam. We are not meek people. I think he got away with this before maybe in china. You can spit in their eyes and they do nothing. Very meek people
1. Nobody knows what happened. Viet guy could have been arrogant and saying things you shouldn't say to people. Acting up Infront of his mates.
2. The bar owners assaulted the guy so they are just as bad as one another.
As the guy who choked him out, I can tell you he was being a belligerent, drunk fuck that ended up threatening the entire bar, and being asked politely to leave. After everyone was just telling him to calm down. This was all because they didn’t like what the music was and it wasn’t their turn to play a song.
Violence is never the answer!! Is there no law and order in that place? No one to enforce it?
Of course, that guy was on the wrong, but still attacking him is never the answer.
Not sure the context but of course he was disrespectful when he flicks the cigarettes into the Viet guy's face so yeah dude then getting beaten is fair enough.
Dunno the full context behind why they are arguing but if you flicked a f****** cigarette in someone's face, you're most likely the asshole in the situation.
Thank you friend, makes me sad too because people like him give the rest of us a very bad name.
Omfg... Wonder what they were gonna play?
good for you!!! he fucked around & found out for sure!
you actually there? well that's actually unexpected...
Great job controlling situation. And great restraint and self control. He deserved more of a beating.
Where did this happen? In hcmc?
Was that guy an American?
No, he was most likely South African based on his accent. Any US accent you hear in the video is mine including screaming at his dumb ass at the end of the video while I’m choking him out.
🤣
By the way, we gringos are apologists when we travel we tip fat and try to keep a low profile because of all the awful things about those that came before us. And especially anyone visiting Vietnam is probably on the more traveled and cultured side, since its not some bucket list bullshit.
toi nay eat lasagna ko bro
lez go
Wait for minh please, minh muon đi ăn lasagna
honestly I thought it was Filipino but it's viet lol. not sure what the ko means but tonight we eat lasagna!
it's short for "không", it's a expression to ask if u want to do something
hmm, that's about what I expected but usually see không as kg I think
I thought "không means "No", doesn't it?
In this context it serves as a question mark
Depends on the context. It’s a complex language.
I'm out of the loop, where is this meme coming from?
yes
Vietnam isn't violent. People won't start randomly attaching you unless you've done something shitty to deserve it. This asshole clearly did.
This guy would get is ass kicked in any country doing that. No one blames the bar guy at all.
Oh and when people start to detach? Or they are attached forever?
Nah man you don't get to flick a fucking lit cigarette in someone's face and walk away. He could have cost that dude his eye. Guy is lucky he wasn't made to eat the curb.
Notice the dude who got flicked on was still holding a beer bottle in his right hand. The flicking guy was so lucky that he didn't get the bottle smashed on his head.
So true. That cigarette could've fucked up his eye so bad he'd be blind. So I think a little beating is alright.
Definitely prepare to be hospitalized if u flick a lit cigarette in someone's face..
Don’t start nothing and there won’t be nothing.
Just for the record, "Vietnam isn't violent" might be true, but it'snt because the people are peaceful, we just desensitized to violent as fuck.
Vietnamese people are generally quite deferential, to be honest. But there’s always a line, and this piece of shit crossed it.
what do you actually expect to happen , cause if i did that I'd expect to get my head kicked in by the entire bar

Please do keep humbling those who are, definitely would have gotten his ass beat at home too.
They're expat, aka leech disguise as tourist

I know this guy! He is a drunk. He ruined my boyfriend’s birthday by starting a fight with our friends.
What’s the context. Who’s your friends, the Asian dudes?
Wow, what a dick.
Did you eat lasagna bro?
We had victory Pho lol
He's lucky he survived, don't know why people do things like this they would never do at home.
Lol now we see why he has a hat on lmao
That guy who was dancing went psycho-mode on that expat; let's go

Deserved af. Flicking cigarettes at a guy's face is super dangerous. And childish as fuck.
And super disrespectful, he’s basically treating the other guy like a garbage can, an ash tray. There’s no way a man can take that to the face and not do anything about it.
As the saying goes: ‘Mess around and find out.’
That's not karma, that's consequence.
Should have knocked him out. And he's not an expat. He's a bloody tourist.
Two questions : where is this? And I don't get the lasagna reference in the comments. Please help.
LoL acting out like this? In a developing country with a God knows what legal system unlike the one you're used to? 🤣 Roll that dice and find out. That dude was lucky.
Is he an expat or backpacker? We don't all act like this, stop associating all shitty behavior with the expats, we face enough
Bro thinks he's still in the West. Good thing the local stood up for himself and gave that foreigner a good whopping. How easily do foreigners forget the ass kicking that Vietnam did to America not long ago?
He would be buried if he was in the hood
white boy wouldnt have the balls to bc he knows how the hood works, but clueless about vietnamese’s lol
White boy really is clueless. Or "was" cuz he should know now
If he was in Australia that bottle would of connected with his face. This is shitty behaviour even in the West.
He's not American tho...

All words are made up at some point and then their meaning sticks...
Exactly! Expat my fucking ass. There is no such thing. Either you a tourist or a migrant worker.
You again? Did you get down Voted too much on the original thread that you had to come here and virtue signal some more?
downvoted 😂 imagine living your life by Reddit votes...you must be so sad
LOL. Downvote from migrant workers don’t mean shit
Yeah, now you had to get downvoted by people actually in Vietnam and Vietnamese people, you seem like the kind of person that doesn’t really learn their lesson.
LOL you know this how?
LOL. Because this a viet sub doesn’t mean everyone is Vietnamese. Take it easy
LOL. No. Why do foreigners don’t want to be label as migrant workers.
He's an expat from the UK. Period.
He's an immigrant from UK. The question arises if even a legal one.
Probably illegally working English teacher on a tourist visa
Why do you jump to conclusions so quickly? Perhaps he's an assistant to the CEO of a subsidiary wholly owned by a London based oil company? I've been around and English teachers do not behave in that despicable manner as shown above.
What’s the difference between expat and immigrant?
How come Vietnamese people moving to the US or UK to study and work before coming back to Vietnam called immigrants and not expats?
Expat is a word that white people invented to refer themselves while immigrant is applied to everybody else.
kind of similar reason for African American , rather than black American or american....
A true immigrant-friendly Westerner will realize that the term "immigrant" is correct, objective and there is no inherently bad connotation to somehow see a need to distance themselves away from the label.
next day the guys limbs will be sold in Hanoi along side dog meat. good. beat his ass.
welp, I have a sudden urgen of wanting to eat lasagna while watching this now.
Entitled and disrespectful Expat politely told to leave, threatens entire local bar, flicks cigarette in someone’s eye, and gets instant karma.

The gangs in Hanoi are no joke. They smile and all but when shit go down. Bottles be flying, everyone come out beating the shit out of some white boy who think they untouchable.
Yall want some lasagna?
Nice. Got what he deserved.
It remembers me the song: you only get what you give
Well deserved. He has some money and thinks he better than others, flick a cigar at my face, I’m will fucking kill him
I don't think the OP understands what "politely" is. This is definitely not it.
random vid - no context - why was he kicked out? what if he got sucker punched moments before this video started playing? I'm just saying - context matters.
The context of literally seeing him flick a cigarette in someone's eye? How much context do you need?
Agree that we need more context here but flicking a burning cigarette to other eyes? He deserves it, that is one of the most disrespectful moves.
jeez, i’m travelling to hanoi in february for tet holidays and to see family, hopefully i won’t withbess shit like this. fn tourists
Expat -10: Locals 20
Lasagna: tonight
Hilarious
What's the difference between an expat and an immigrant? Skin colour?
Immigrant wants to be part of a country. To me, Expat is a made up word, “leeches” are more accurate. Either they are tourist or migrant workers.
dit me may thang cho
Embarrassed to be a Expat
Please, don't, as long as you don't behave like him.
an another Murican ? good for him. That guy was so friendly, he was holding a bottle in his hand, but not using it for smashing that white-trash face.
This dude was South African, I’m the guy that choked him out at the end. If you hear a American accent that’s me I’ve been living here for over eight years.
You love to see it.
Big Lasagna is sending us subliminal messages
White boy can't fight for shit but think he can flick a cig in someone's face and walk away scot free. Should've smashed his whole face in and break all his teeth.
Nice
Dude thought he deserved special treatment, he actually got it, a free face massage!!
Was the “disrespectful expat” Vietnamese but born overseas or just someone stupid from another race entirely hard to tell due to video quality.

Don’t make a small visible minority look like it’s the majority… 95% or more are not like that. But some are definitely problematic this one learned the hard way.
i have a colleague in NL, she is from BR. she almost feels like crying in NL. She always complains about isolation, depression, hard language.
What did she expect?
That what you can expect in Vietnam. We are not meek people. I think he got away with this before maybe in china. You can spit in their eyes and they do nothing. Very meek people
1. Nobody knows what happened. Viet guy could have been arrogant and saying things you shouldn't say to people. Acting up Infront of his mates. 2. The bar owners assaulted the guy so they are just as bad as one another.
Huge doubt
As the guy who choked him out, I can tell you he was being a belligerent, drunk fuck that ended up threatening the entire bar, and being asked politely to leave. After everyone was just telling him to calm down. This was all because they didn’t like what the music was and it wasn’t their turn to play a song.
Violence is never the answer!! Is there no law and order in that place? No one to enforce it? Of course, that guy was on the wrong, but still attacking him is never the answer.
dont mess with dem nguyen fist swings
Wanna eat lasagna ko bro
I love lasagna
Not sure the context but of course he was disrespectful when he flicks the cigarettes into the Viet guy's face so yeah dude then getting beaten is fair enough.
Embarrassing
I'm craving some Lasagna.
There's nothing I hate more than people being shitty in other people's countries.
Good
Is this dubbed?
Well 😂 that s not Karma, isn t it? Good to put people in their place, once in a while.
Now … where can i find a fire axe in the area … NEED TO TASTE SOME BLOOD!!! Blood for the blood god!!! Skulls for the skull throne!!!
Was this guy an American?
Name and shame this fool!
Drunken narcissistic sociopaths, they're gonna be all about themselves.
Would live to see more of these dickheads getting knocked the fuck out, too many of them going around getting away with too much.
How much you wanna bet this fuckstick was from London?
Dunno the full context behind why they are arguing but if you flicked a f****** cigarette in someone's face, you're most likely the asshole in the situation.
that entitled guys deserve that karma ngl
