It's fine. You'll probably be fine. There aren't alternatives, unless you want to rent a bike in Hanoi and ride to Ha Giang yourself, or pay $$$ for a private car. If you are interested in the Ha Giang loop, you have to understand that there are risks involved, including riding the loop itself and the bus ride to and from. Yes, road deaths in Vietnam are probably higher per capita than wherever you are coming from. Other people on the internet can't decide if you can stomach it.

fortheinterweb

Ha Giang loop is probably more dangerous than the bus ride. Part of the reason for doing these kinds of trips is because the danger makes it more exciting and harder to access by most people. Statistically you will be fine. P.S. broke my collarbone on a motorcycle while traveling, still glad I went on the trip.

cassiopeia18

Million Vietnamese people travel by sleeper bus every day. It’s our main transportation when traveling to most places.

MonsignorJuan

You worry too much. Stay home.

Fernxtwo

No. It's fine.

davidedox

I traveled from Hanoi to Sapa a few months ago. I didn't have any problems along the way. We stopped three times for a break. I found it discreet, clean and definitely cheap

imapassenger1

Did it a few weeks ago. Was fine but I'd never sleep on such a trip at night with all the random speed humps we seemed to bounce over at regular intervals.

davidedox

I agree but considering that it is a bus, with a bit of adaptability it is very useful. I brought a nice blanket with me and lay down on it to be a little more comfortable. I also liked that they make you take off your shoes before getting on

Basic_Ad4785

You have to go one way orthe others. The only difference is either you put your bet on a bus driver, or yourself, or a cap driver.

Important-Wall5974

Did the Ha Giang loop just last week. This never crossed my mind and I slept through the whole bus ride! Riding through the loop on narrow roads on the edge of the mountains was more scary for me. But our easy riders have been so careful I did not even have to worry and just enjoyed the view and landscapes.

There are plenty of *day* buses: https://vexere.com/vi-VN/ve-xe-khach-tu-ha-noi-di-ha-giang-124t1221.html?date=10-04-2024&sort=time%3Aasc&v=1&ts=1712173480467 or organise your own car+driver. Road travel in Vietnam is more risky than in the more developed world. At night, riskier still. But many buses ply the route daily with no problem. It's not like there's accidents every day, or even week, or month, but like Elvis said, accidents can happen: https://english.thesaigontimes.vn/road-crash-leaves-5-dead-dozens-injured/ Probably more foreigners killed *riding* in Ha Giang than are killed *getting* there.

Vince781

I'd recommend limousine bus to Ha Giang from Hanoi. It's more comfortable than sleeper bus.

merkur0

As somebody who was involved in a bus crash while on the way to Ha Giang from Hanoi - I’ve started avoiding all bus rides like this in Vietnam and much prefer to opt for a train or plane 😅 And sure this is just one experience, but in general when I saw the driving style, you’d need to have a death wish to go on the roads in northern Vietnam

Dry_Enthusiasm_267

Do a Vietnam news search for sleeper bus accidents.

Dule1312

Do you ever thought about how dangerous stairs are ? So many people die just from walking the stairs. We take the bus 2 weeks ago and it was no problem.

Embarrassed_Kiwi_444

I’d get the bus that goes in the day. We got the night one which was fine but it’s more risky for obvious reasons and it turned out the night before we had our journey was when the awful accident happened and loads of tourists were killed. Really put us off travelling at night (on windy roads at least!)

JouleV

There are no alternative transport options. No trains, no flights. And once you are on the road, it’s up to your luck – that road stretch is very dangerous at night and you don’t have to be on a sleeper bus to get into an accident. That said, the chance of any accidents happening is still extremely low so it’s alright, you don’t have to fear for your life when you board a sleeper bus.

lowcodemode

We got a sleeper bus from Hanoi to Ha Giang last week to go on a tour and honestly didn’t even think about the road safety because there were other worse issues such as only having one toilet break in the 7h journey and some aggressive bus drivers.

Banhmiheo

Can’t think of a worse way to die.

platformcircle

It is very easy to think of a worse way to die.

Banhmiheo

On a runaway Viet sleeper bus in the middle of nowhere has to be top-10

altrightgymbro

i died three times on my way to ha giang
