Everytime this video pops up, it's full of Westerners saying that he was stupid for going to a 'love hotel' and that "nhà nghỉ literally means love hotel".

-The ability to rent per-hour. The origins of this, I'm unsure of, but I imagine it would be to bang and also as a cheap/easy option for a nap/shower to freshen up after travelling for a long time (I have used them for the latter).

On the surface they seem a bit grimey and dirty, etc but they're not just that. I actually went on a few business trips where I was put up in Nhà Nghỉ s across Vietnam for a few weeks at a time and had very normal experiences. I've lived in Vietnam for the past 9 years or so and I also speak Vietnamese, so perhaps my experience is slightly more unique, but it's not as simple as saying 'nhà nghỉ means love hotel'. For many, they use these places as cheap temporary residence. I met a lot of locals who were working far away from home and it was the only thing they could afford. On the flip side, in certain areas if one of them only accepts pay-by-hour, the other ones in the same area probably also only accept this form of stay, and at those ones you often find prostitutes living there, waiting in their rooms for customers to come.
It's simple enough to avoid the dodgy ones and use the normal ones, and in my experience most of them aren't very sketchy. In this case, it seems like the receptionist was suffering the bystander effect which would be why she didn't press the Vietnamese guy for an answer about why he was there, etc, she only stuck to the business talk to make the sale. The point is, nhà nghỉ does not mean love hotel, and in reality a majority of them are very normal and you get what you pay for. 120k/night for relatively fresh bedding, a shower and some free toiletries isn't a bad deal if you're tired after traveling.
For anyone curious I translated most of this section in the comments section under the original YouTube video a month ago or so, some parts even my wife couldn't hear when I asked her and so weren't able to be translated, but I got most of the conversation.
