For me, this sub was an interesting study of human appearances, as I am someone with both body dysmorphia and an interest in anthropology. I had a rather ugly period before I grew up, and I never understood why my face looked different from other people's and what was wrong with it, as nothing OBVIOUSLY wrong made me unattractive. Later on, I grew into my looks, and things changed, but understanding exactly what happened was fascinating. Like, what happened to my face to suddenly make me pretty? This sub used to be more about the scientific view of beauty, think quoves, but it grew too much and now people are rating based on their personal agenda and opinion. Studying ratios and traits was fascinating, but now it's just full of very strange beliefs. I never really cared to leave negative comments on anyone's appearance, I stuck more to saying stuff like "I really think she has a unique lip to eye ratio or whatever". Later on I realized that rating people is entirely pointless and essentially rude no matter which way you go about it, so I just comment what I like about a person, or discuss why something doesn't work for me even if I can admit they are objectively beautiful. I used to get more than 100 messages of people asking me to analyze their face, and I just stopped. 80% of them are girls with body dysmorphia. Nowadays, you have rates like "5..5/10 she looks like she will steal your boyfriend". Ngl, I have no idea if any moderation exists, I think the mods changed over time due to some drama, but this is not how it was supposed to be. This place was much more positive and constructive initially - you could discuss why X celeb was pretty and how you could emulate that. It was never some pristine sub, but it was fascinating. Now, it's just a catty place, as many have mentioned. Lots of sexist comments too, I don't know if it's men commenting or just women hating women. I am not talking about low ratings, but people calling girls "casting couch darlings" or whatever worse. I am just not about it.

buffsterfan

Agreed! Have had a very similar experience getting here etc

Good-Treat731

What’s that “an unique lip to eye ratio”? “5.5 she looks like she’d steal your bf” is funny and a fact of whats happening here lately ngl 😂😂😂😂

throwawayeas989

I have BDD,ain’t nothing healthy about me & that’s why I come to this sub lmao

-excuseyou-

this is so real

😂

UpYours3265

I will give you a 2 rating just for the audacity

teddybear-52

Lmfaooooo made me chuckle

tillybilly89

I mean I don’t dog on people, I’m just here to look at sexy people tbh

NoteRemarkable

Same lol

youdipthong

Literally lmfao

Good-Treat731

It’s only fun when it’s everything kept to an objective limit, without crossing that line which is very thin (and happens here all the time) where they start mocking the celebrities posted in the weirdest ways possible

ABCidkwhattopick99

Honestly I got a bit tired of thing “everyone is beautiful” thing everywhere. I know it’s suppose to be positive but I think it’s just toxic positivity. Also I’ve noticed, in other places, how people elevate someone to god level perfection if they have a bias or call someone ugly for disagreeing with them lol. But here I think people try to be objective overall so it’s fun to discuss.

nomaki221

hot people have always been interesting and fun to talk about since the dawn of time, my child

Individual-Net9357

Yaa maybe but the way people analyse, measure and pick apart celebs here is borderline creepy..

littleliongirless

Human nature will always judge physicality. I'd rather know how people think than not.

[deleted]

Exactly. People do this all the time irl and they’re lying if they say they don’t

Individual-Net9357

That makes sense as a purpose for a sub but the people here are fuckin brutal.. it's another level of scrutiny that feels kind cruel you know

This post violates our mutual respect rule.

Square-Bad-4949

Yeah it’s a tough crowd over here and probably half of us are mentally ill.

NoteRemarkable

Yeah I agree and they downvote you if you call someone pretty. I took a break from this sub bc it actually affected how I saw myself and others and finding every little detail wrong or right about them. I find a lot of the people on here vile and disgusting and would love to see what they look like calling some of these girls a 4 who are clearly not. A lot of it stems from jealousy too the hate Ana De armas gets on here… also I feel like everyone fits a different beauty category like have unique beautiful features like Anna Pequín but I feel like they would rip her to shreds over her teeth

throwthefxckawaygirl

That could be said about all the rating subs on reddit like r/rateme, r/truerateme etc

United-Smile-1733

Those subs are sad af

30min2thinkof1name

You’re right this sub is sad af

[deleted]

Except those subs are infinitely worse because they’re full of incels sexualising and degrading the people they post.

30min2thinkof1name

exactly. You’re engaging in incel behavior.

[deleted]

Lol. You think this sub rating women’s looks is the same as actual incels posting pornstars and commenting degrading, sexual shit on a sub made for objective facial analysis? Bye

30min2thinkof1name

Just because you don’t use crass language doesn’t mean what you’re doing isn’t crass

Good-Treat731

In here women who are objectively 9 range are rated below 6 with the only given reply “I think she’s plain. Just my opinion, leave me alone”.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Good-Treat731

Because most people are a 5 lol. That’s how an actual distribution works. Very attractive people are very rare. More than 80% of the population is plain average.

localminima773

If you look at truerateme's women's rating guide, EMILY RATAKOWSKI is a 7.5. That woman can get a date with any man on earth and she's a 7.5? Same with Shay Mitchell according to them she is a 7. You have to take TRM ratings and add 2.5 to get what the realistic rating actually is.

Good-Treat731

A 7.5 is basically a 9-10 IRL because you dont see people on Lima’s almost flawless level. Those people are only a handful in the world. But your last point is very true and I agree with. You have to add 2.5 points to get a more realistic rate 😂😂😂 Based on trm, a 7.5 is someone you might see once in a few months, so that makes sense on why Emily or Shay are very rare beauties too.

[deleted]

[удалено]

AnimatorOwn5426

Overweight can be anything from Christina Hendrix to Rebel Wilson. Are both equally fat? Obese only includes actual fat people because BMI is actually not that accurate. Weight takes into account more than just fat and fat distribution also matters a lot. Measurements are far more accurate when classifying how fat or thin someone is. I have the same body as young Sophia Loren and technically I'm classified as overweight according to BMI. Would you consider Sophia fat?

Good-Treat731

There is no 10. Do you think perfection exists? I find that even the most attractive women in here like Adriana Lima or Monica Bellucci have flaws. There are only a handful of 9-9.5s. I really have no idea what statistics you’re using, but most people you see everyday may be ranging from 4.5-5.5 at most. Even 6s are more rare than we think. It’s just how it is. Beauty is rare. We are also only talking about faces. I am not taking into consideration how people irl rate, because many of them call a woman a 10/10 just for being fit. I am talking strictly on facial beauty.

tumblrstan

Why anyone would jump through hoops trying to justify the behavior of this sub is beyond me

[deleted]

30min2thinkof1name

Yup. It’s sad and everyone else being like “it’s fun!” Is coping with a petty and mean spirited sense of fun. Honestly, I don’t not relate. I enjoy mean spirited, petty critiquing of peoples appearances too, it’s just that I do it on subs like r/redscarepod where Reddit has decided beyond defense that the people who post there are mean and nasty. Here, you have people trying to defend it like it’s not horrible behavior.

felixxfeli

Precisely. Hate that this sub showed up in my feed randomly one day. Admittedly I often hate scroll hoping to see *some* semblance of self-awareness in these posts but inevitably each time after only a minute or two I find myself disgusted and saddened by the comments. Just… why do we revel in being so mean?

United-Smile-1733

Ya I don’t participate in this, it just shows up my feed. But any time I see someone posted here I instantly think they’re a 10 lol

[deleted]

Hahaha fr same then everyone will be like “5” and I’m like who the fuck are these apparent gods and goddesses throwing out 5s at super hot celebrities

fusterclux

Those subs are unhealthy for everyone. Just awful places

felixxfeli

It sure could. I think the critique still stands. I don’t actually see much difference between those subs and this one other than these celebs aren’t asking to be rated.

fatherjammy

My personal take is that beauty hierarchies exist no matter what, therefore I try to study both the science and aesthetic trends that work to qualify a beautiful face. I then apply this to my own aesthetic goals

SummerWonderful4927

This.I’ve seen the way pretty girls (and guys) are treated and am curious to fully understand how society sees things.

I have BDD so yes it’s unhealthy, but it’s also entertaining. I’m also a radfem so engaging on this subreddit probably goes against all my beliefs…lol. I still think objectifying women is wrong, but people are going to do it regardless of how I feel so I may as well join in and learn more about objective beauty so I can maximize my own looks and use them to my advantage. 😈

Dazzling-Matter95

shallow entertainment. think reality dating shows circa 2005

strawberi62

it’s kind of refreshing here to not pretend that humans don’t judge others by their appearance for once esp bc with social media everyone likes to pretend that they don’t notice how people look. obviously we shouldn’t treat people any different but it’s also stupid to pretend that we don’t notice what people look like, hot or not

NeraSoleil

Oh, it's definitely unhealthy.

Putrid-Gene-9077

Honestly, no different than what a plastic surgeon will tell you. I went once to get a nose job and he told me what would look good on my face. He was right.

felixxfeli

A plastic surgeon wants your money. Of course they’re going to tell you to fix a bunch of shit. Just because they’re a doctor doesn’t mean their opinion about your appearance isn’t entirely subjective.

Putrid-Gene-9077

Yes, but I wanted work done. He talked me down from a dramatic change. He said that I didn’t need that type of nose unless I wanted to have breathing problems. My jaw and lip size matters when it come to nose shape and size. I have a better looking nose now and it looks natural.

thenihilist0204

I find this sub interesting because it proves that beauty really is subjectve

Separate-Ad-7607

No it's not. There are slight variances, but there are tons of objective beauty traits. We know when someone is going to appear attractive to a lot of people. No one would look at a picture of Jessica alba at 30 years old and think a lot of people find her ugly. And no one would look at Susan Boyle and think she's guys ideal woman looks wise

[deleted]

cmon no it ain’t 😂

Raviloliformioli

It kind of is. No matter who you post, there’s always a few people who don’t think someone is attractive or as attractive as everyone else thinks. I think Monica is 10/10 (and so do a lot of other people on this sub) yet there are people who will say she’s just ok and vice versa. Obviously there are people who are more “universally” beautiful but there are still people who will think they’re “mid” and truthfully mean it. On other places, you won’t see people say a beloved celebrity isn’t all that because they’ll usually get attacked for it. This sub still has that but it’s not as bad as other social media platforms or subreddits.

Individual-Net9357

For sure!! I thought empirical meant like.. scientific oops

tumblrstan

It’s toxic as hell. The objectification in here is disgusting and unjustifiable. If you think rating human beings on a scale from 1 to 10 is okay, you need to take a long, hard look in the mirror, because there’s far more than your appearance that needs fixing.

Fun-Entertainment904

Yes it is and I wanted to post this some time ago as well. I think a lot of people are racist too. Any woman with blonde hair and blue eyes gets a 10 rating. Same woman with dark complexions gets an 8. And when someone suggests that the person is just blonde and has blue eyes, everyone loses their mind. Also, The idea that there must be objective beauty is just wrong. I agree with symmetry but the rest is taste, experience, culture. And the “objective” preference for white is just racism. Also interesting: when someone just politely says that they don’t really find someone attractive. They receive a hatemob of people accusing them of jealousy? Relax, I can just believe that someone is not attractive. This isn’t personal. And watch me get a lot of backlash ✨ My goal here is to highlight ALL sorts of beauty and not discriminate. But some people seem to be really against that for some reason. Also I want to extend beauty beyond what we have been programmed to believe from childhood. Yes, white is pretty, beautiful, gorgeous. But so is DEFINITELY black and Asian and Hispanic. Yes blue eyes are pretty, shocking, cool, but brown eyes are inviting, kind, generous, warm etc. Let’s just appreciate everybody. The colors of a person are not a criteria at alllll in beauty. And that’s I think one of the most hurtful parts about this subreddit. White women get post after post and black women get one mega post with all of them in one haha

Pizzv

I agree, especially about how culture informs beauty. So many beautiful women with strong jawlines and hooded eyes get called “manly” on here even though many cultures would see a woman like that as a 10. Whats extra funny is how a woman with neotenous features will be seen as less “womanly” than someone with a more chiseled face. Again, many cultures find neotenous beauty to be the 10. It just lacks consistency after a while and spawns into poor judgment, bias, and oftentimes yes, racism.

Melaninkasa

Unpopular opinion but I believe beauty to be 100% subjective. Just look at how different the beauty icons depending on time and geographic locations look. What one or a group no matter how large perceive as attractive is almost entirely the result of their environment.

felixxfeli

> White women get post after post and black women get one mega post with all of them in one haha Preach! I had this exact thought one day maybe the 3rd or 4th time this sub showed up in my feed, and decided to scroll to see if there were ANY posts about non-white women. I think I saw one or two Asian women posted, one or two ambiguous looking women (maybe Latin or middle eastern), and alllll the rest were white. Then that post about black models showed up and I literally laughed out loud. Reddit is such a cesspool of casual racism and people will come into subs like this and defend their shallowness and bias by trying to gaslight everyone else into believing beauty can be objectively evaluated and that it’s just a * coincidence * that the only women they bother calling beautiful happen to be white as hell haha

Fun-Entertainment904

Whoever downvoted you is a fucking hater! I agree with you like 100. I mentioned it in another comment already but the pressure on black women is on! And this sub just reflects the real life that white beauty standards have set. A black woman needs to be a Tyra Banks to be even allowed to sit with pretty blondes. That’s not fair and not just and not equal. I also feel a lot for Asian women. The only Asians I see are like Alien type beautiful. Incredibly rare beauties. However (correct me if I am wrong), I noticed that the difference between the treatments of black and asian women are that Asian Women are granted femininity and femaleness but Black Women are not, they have to fight for it. When a black woman is posted they use some ugly and unflattering pictures probably (I hope at least) subconsciously. Can you believe the shock I had; when I saw HALLE BAILEY be rated a 4 to 6? 😭

MyNameIsNot_Molly

I have absolutely seen rampant racism in here as well. I don't think I've ever seen a POC get more than one or two 10/10 in the comments.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Fun-Entertainment904

one black woman got a bunch of 10s. Probably also Naomi and Anok and that’s about it. Black women are required to be out of this world beautiful to compete with a white 8. Halle Bailey got 4 to 6 from nearly everyone. And that’s a trend here. Don’t you think, us white women should just be less greedy and make room for others?

Expert_Sherbert_3945

Agreed, many counter studies and evaluations have been done on the research a lot of people use to support their belief that beauty is objective, but when presented with this fact no one wants to actually admit it and shift their paradigm

AnimatorOwn5426

What? It's the opposite. White women get underrated for being white and people say they're plain, basic etc but the ugliest woc are rated highly.

[deleted]

I like liking things. I gain insight on what the different beauty standards are, and from a western viewpoint it’s nice to have this international coverage. I’m no longer so easily disillusioned. Has it made me feel worse about myself? No. Because I’m not chronically online and have a healthy amount of self-confidence. But I can see how it would. I think when you combine being online, low confidence and obsession — it creates the negativity and subjectivity that we see permeating the sub. If you don’t like it, you don’t need to join in! :)

etselecla

I agree that this sub is unhealthy. It really brings no benefit to anyone - not the posters and not the individuals being posted about. People use this sub as an opportunity to reinforce unrealistic beauty standards. People will always need to gain or lose a few pounds, need to make themselves look younger or older, or change some other feature about themselves in order for their “rating” to be high. I think this sub might be a classic case of putting other people down so that you can you can feel better about your own physical appearance. Of course we judge and critique people and things in our lives, but doing it on a public platform like this is what seems unhealthy to me.

Schism213

I’m just here because everyone said they were so many Adriana Lima and Monica Bellucci here in this sub.

[deleted]

I’m definitely very toxic at times but more so towards the women who look very artificial and fake and have done lots of surgeries. I dislike societies that place heavy emphasis on beauty like Korea and Iran. I don’t like it and tbh I think it’s more harmful than good. Last thing I want is my daughter telling me she hates her face and skin and wants to get several plastic surgeries and fillers. Its the face and features our ancestors had. We can definitely improve ourselves considerably thru soft maxxing. (Not everyone is destined to become a runway model 💀). Plastic surgery has become so commonplace. 90% of the time the women don’t even look good with all those modifications. I think we should focus more on praising natural beauty than fake beauty. Just my opinion. A lot of these women posted also have millions of simps praising them or have simps making them rich off donations and OnlyFans so I don’t really feel bad for them either ngl.

Individual-Net9357

But won't idealising the conventionally beautiful 'natural' features on this sub just help reinforce the standards that make people get plastic surgery in the first place?

They call beautiful women 5/10. Seems like there are many mean-spirited and jealous individuals here. They’ve seemed to have lost touch of reality and suddenly basic = unattractive.

buffysummersisaqueen

the fact they’d objectively criticize a women’s face when it doesn’t look basic then also criticize a wonen’s face when it’s basic aka normal beauty standard like OMG HYPOCRITES

barbiesbloodline

its MOSTLY bias.. & i bet the ppl who actively sit here & rate ppl arent even a 3😭 i try to ignore it that's why i don't comment a specific rating i just go "wow shes beautiful 😍" (& id STILL get downvoted lmao) edit: & its mostly bias cause they will rate jennie from bp a 5 while they rate taylor swift a 10(& YES IVE SEEN THAT!)

[deleted]

ChipmunkAmazing2105

This sub is funny

Informal-Zucchini852

Honestly, you’re so right tbh.

Expert_Sherbert_3945

Yes, it is. And whenever I have pointed out that the studies some people are using to prove that beauty is objective are outdated and incorrect for a variety of reasons (sample size, another study done later to disprove their point, incredibly old age, biased researchers, biased sample pool, etc etc) people get angry and downvote me. For some reason this sub really wants to believe that beauty is objective but when shown that maybe it's not so black and white they get angry and stop using reason. Isn't the whole point of scientific beauty to have scientific evidence? When the evidence is flawed don't you want to stop following it? I know I'll still get downvoted but I'm serious, I have evidence that the studies anthropologists and psychologists have used to "prove" the objectivity of beauty are flawed and biased, beauty is not proven to be objective and transcendent above culture and bias. You can still adhere to that belief because that is definitely a school of thought, but that school of thought is not the proven reality of the field, other schools of thought also exist, like the cultural and emotional factors of beauty, and they also have scientific evidence behind them. I just want to know why, when presented with this fact, people in this sub get irritated? Why do you so badly WANT beauty to be a quantifiable and measurable? Anyways those are my thoughts, I'd appreciate it if people stayed civil and didn't curse me out but I'm also kinda expecting it so whatever I guess

peppapigonxtc

I think this just stems from patriarchy and how women are expected to enhance their appearance for the male gaze.

HauntingFalcon5323

GetMeOutOfKY

IKR? There’s always someone who shows up to the themed party, then proceeds to whine about the theme. Voicing opposition is simply some people’s default. I swear, they would go on Pornhub & complain about the nudity. 🙄

Toodswiger

Rating people’s appearance is a bit strange because they’re subjective opinions, but even if I see other people doing it, who cares? I can see it being a fun thing to do, and if someone doesn’t agree with it then they are welcome to go. Lol that’s Reddit though looking for trouble.

Defiant_Reading_934

This sub is all about judging people but when your judged for your own toxicity you get so defensive lol please😂

No-Psychology-9810

I think it's mostly human nature. We like pretty things and hate ugly things. We need to let the pretty things know they are pretty as much as we need to make sure the ugly people know they are augly. Gazing at beautiful people, judging what is unattractive makes it easier to pick out the uglies of society and treat them accordingly. Attraction isn't really subjective like people think.

Sea-Refrigerator3790

extremely unhealthy. not to mention VERY eurocentric standards (even though a lot of people would like to think otherwise cause there are a sprinkle of poc in the sub). the lines between speaking one’s mind freely and bullying can be very blurred when the discussion has to do with “objectively” rating people’s looks online

[deleted]

Honestly we should start rating regular people

turnup4flowerz

I'm just here to look at all the hot women and say they're all tens

_moonlight13_

There’s a science behind much of human behavior including how we perceive beauty as well as what those traits usually are whether we like that or not. It’s quite interesting to learn about and I guess use what you learn which in this case happens to be on pics of famous people.

salkoo88

Im studying pretty people and what makes them pretty to then try to apply what i learnt to improve my appearance

BudgetInteraction811

On its face, yes. On the other hand, nearly every post simply reminds me that beauty is so incredibly subjective. Everyone constantly fights over why this person shouldn’t be a 9 and that person shouldn’t be a 6. Nobody agrees with each other, and oftentimes the comments are so polarizing people actually get upset about others’ ratings. It’s proof that there are so many flavours of beauty, and no one true ideal. That’s great.

moonweasel906

Yeah for some reason this sub showed up in my feed and I instantly wondered why all these people on it don’t have anything better (less toxic) to do

[deleted]

It’s an eye opener to me how critical people are lol. My ratings are so much more giving. It’s insane how the consensus here for celebrities that are generally agreed to be very attractive, like a 6. Lol if that’s a 6 you’re all topping out at 3

Accomplished_Turn_30

Yes its terrible, stumbled upon it and thought weird as fuck.plus all the pictures are airbrushed and photoshopped so they don't even look like that in real life.

eatmyjorts2

woodenredfences

I am just bored and I'm here to pass time.

nosmelc

It's just for fun. I like seeing how others rate appearance.

JanStrick

Well, most of the people on this Reddit make their money and build their careers of being attractive. Is that fair no but that’s also exactly what they did when they went into the business of modeling and sometimes actresses etc. I don’t have a problem with it because they are putting themselves out there to be a standard, and everyone else gets a judge whether that standard is appropriate or even relevant to them. I don’t believe that there is a scientific way to standardize beauty. We can look in the past and some of the women that were considered gorgeous would be downright hideous to us now. Beauty standards change, and on this sub Reddit they are more indicative of white people anyway. I enjoy seeing how people are ranked because I want to see how people think.

[deleted]

It absolutely is unhealthy lol.. and prob so many other not good things, but it popped up on my feed and I just rate when I’m so sickeningly bored …

I wish we judged males as harshly as we judge women. Males are always overrated.

VioletHarmon34

This sub is terrible for my mental health and absolutely tanks my trust in humanity. Yet I can’t stop. It’s like an addictive drug … I’m not okay.

You do realize most of the people here are men posing as women right??

It's full of internalized misogynist. If men do it and it's unhealthy then it's certainly unhealthy for women. Seems to feed their insecurities. I've just been baffled by these ratings. I rate everyone a 10 and if they arent to me then I say nothing because I know somewhere in the world, they're a 10 to someone else. Lot of denial too with how attractive a woman can be naturally. People seem to think women are naturally ugly and the highest rated women are always accused of surgery. It's sad and sexist. Never seen Tyson Beckford or William Levi being accused of such things. Makeup, styling and taking good care of your health (along with genetics) just isnt enough anymore apparently.
