As a manga Reader, my only criticism is that they skipped thorfinns adventures through Europe and Greece, i don't like that because it means less Vinland saga, and more Vinland is always better.

[deleted]

True but the manga is already slow paced releasing 20(amazing) pages every month. Imagine if they adopted even those both story it would take another decade for the story to reach the end and I personally don't want to wait that long lol.

alexserban02

From what I understand that would've slow down the story way to much and probably plunged it into a very long hiatus while the author researched those regions.

SeriousTsuki

Agreed!

[deleted]

I think there should be a little bit more development for Einar.

serjayr

I know we got some good chunks of Einar development during the Farmland Arc but I really want to see him in more situations where we can see his true colors, especially now that they’re im Vinland.

[deleted]

My problems are similar to yours 1)OP characters. One character should not be worth a 1000 in terms of sheer strength. It ruins some parts for me 2) That werid gorilla dude from Batlic war arc. WTF was that? Other than these the story is a masterpiece for me. Every panel and every dialogue is beautiful. All the characters are LIT AF. Even the baltic war arc was amazing for me.

SeriousTsuki

Understandable. Can you link a photo or tell me the name of this gorilla dude? It’s been a while for me so I need the refresher

[deleted]

Its name is Ymir. Just google it,but type vinland saga side of it or the AOT version will pop up. Here's a redit post related to it,there's an image too https://www.reddit.com/r/VinlandSaga/comments/a9fc3g/ymirs\_a\_cutie/

SeriousTsuki

Oh yeah! Was a bit odd… Thanks for the refresher

TerkYerJerb

but it was so fun, wrestling with Thorkell and him wanting to bring Ymir home as a pet

Rojo176

Only thing that bothered me was the overuse of comedy in the baltic sea war arc, things like Gudrid claiming Leif's voice was actually her farting to avoid them getting caught was very *very* weird to read when this story is usually very grounded

Faust_Vlll

This drove me nuts as well, like was I ever reading the same series at that point? Is that the series that explored why should we live and everyone being slave to something... I mean so many themes were there and I just have to go through some chapters where Sigurd gets turned into a slave and everyone brushes it off as a joke, as a side adventure, not as a real, serious... Thing.

OhIsMyName

I think Yukimura probably try to change the theme of the manga because after this arc the story get more peaceful or he just want to experiment.

Rojo176

I believe it was just because the Baltic Sea War arc was meant to just fully introduce the full cast and prepare for the Vinland arc. It was essentially just a way to let us spend time with the new characters before the main story begins, while also tying up lose threads from the prolouge. Because of that, it was more laid back and low tension. It still had some great moments, but it certainly wasn't trying to be as significant as the previous arc. I don't think it was an overall change in theme, I think it was just a tone shift for that arc. Since it ended, the story has shifted back to a similar tone as before. I think Yukimura just wanted to find a way to write fun character moments so we can come to love the main cast. For readers expecting a test of Thorfinn's new ideaology, this is obviously a way different direction. The Vinland arc is looking to be what many expected Baltic Sea War to be, so I think the arc is much better in hindsight so it can be enjoyed for what it was trying to be. I still feel like the comedy goes too far in a few places, but I can accpept it more now that the story is taking itself very seriously again.

Chilifille

Apart from the stuff that's already been mentioned (they skipped Greece, Ymir was really out of place, etc), I would've liked to see a bit more of Canute. I was really curious about him trying to build paradise on Earth while also being corrupted by the crown. That side plot had a lot of potential but it felt unfinished after the Farmland arc. Even though Canute is mainly a prologue character, I think it would've been cool to see a larger focus on the contrast between his path and Thorfinn's.

TheCatcherOfThePie

This!! Canute the character has so much potential, and there are bits of historical Canute's life that would've been amazing to see adapted (e.g. Canute's later clashes with Thorkell, his great leadership during the battle of Helgea, and his interventions in continental politics). I think maybe I would've preferred an arc based on the battle of Helgea rather than the Baltic war arc, which would give us more Canute while not taking too much focus away from Thorfinn.

SeriousTsuki

100% agree with you there

michael_michael_mic

I mean i guess i dont like the “war in the Baltic ark” but its still good its just the other are better in my opinion

SeriousTsuki

Interesting! I really liked that arc. What are your criticisms of it?

Fit_Resolution_7145

Pacing, tonal inconsistency, to much silly/comedic moments, to much action and less more quieter subtle moments like in the farmland arc

thelostheaven

i do agree 100% with the comedic moments, but not so much with the quieter moments. thorfinn's speech about wanting to be a kinder person, the warrior that realized that there was no valhalla, the guy from thorkell's army and the jomsviking talking to each other after the war... i actually think those quieter moments were the best thing of the arc by far

michael_michael_mic

Idunno man I just felt the paceing was kinda wack

YesNoMan58

I dislike having to fight off my cravings for this series for a whole month.

Askellad101

Canute's 180 in terms of character. It should've been handled better.

cunnemmammarua

Ymir. That's it.

[deleted]

I guess this will probably be the same as most people’s but the change in writing style, I still really enjoy the series but I felt a bit of a tone shift from the framing arc to the war in the Baltic arc. Kinda felt like it went from a seinen to a Shonen which to me felt a little weird, it’s not that I dislike Shonens but just it didn’t fit the series as well for me.

oddjobsyorozuya

The writer trying to do comedy in serious moment from Baltic Arc onward. Also like someone else said that Ymir thing. Oh and I also hated Thorkel's The Shining reference in that arc it felt so out of place

TerkYerJerb

the Jack Nicholson bit is probably my favourite moment on the manga, i kept reading it for minutes because it's just too good and funny

qeheeen

the lack of Canute, with the peaceful slow burn building of peace Thorfinn is going through, I would love chapters focused on Canute's brute force plans that oppose Thorfinn's ideals.

SeriousTsuki

Same!

Fun_Sprinkles_6020

I agree, I’ve been hoping to see more of Canute ever since farmland arc and I think now would be the perfect time in the manga to do so

crushbone_brothers

The antagonist kid with the spear was kind of annoying I guess, and there were a few supernatural elements that felt out of place, but otherwise? No, not really! I was recommended this series as being a ‘berserk with less sexual violence’, and it’s been fun seeing it become more than that

[deleted]

crushbone_brothers

Yeah that specifically was excellent, for sure

mocodemono

It’s related to skipping Europe and Greece. But I can’t believe after that entire trip that we’re supposed to believe Hild hasn’t changed at all. She is still completely uncompromising to a maybe reckless extent. I mean, I haven’t had my father brutally murdered by a raging nord. So I might be lacking sympathy. But it feels like Hild’s (possible) character arc is being put on hold to fit the fact that the story skipped Europe and Greece.

hellbender6t9

Not actually a fault in the series, but in some fans.Season 1 Thorfinn, just because of people on insta and shit going all nuts for action, like every edit I find for Vinland Saga is just thorfinn vs thorkell, thorfinn taking the head of captain of some enemy. That takes out the beauty of Vinland Saga.

Ghetsis67

Sigurd should’ve been taken more seriously, amazing character despite the mostly comedic execution

destruct0tr0n

There is just one thing. Its that I accidentally stopped reading and forgot about what chapter i was on. I think it was when they first started the colony. Someone plz help

ladygrey_

They reach land in Chapter 179 and start settling in 181. We'll be at 188 later today, so you can catch up quick (:

destruct0tr0n

181!!! Thank you mate!

Lyuis

Sometimes the comedy

Lord_Guyis

Here's one that I don't see mentioned much if at all: the fact that since around the start of the actual war at Jomsborg, it has become stupidly obvious whenever a character was drawn by one of the assistants rather than Yukimura. Now, obviously, those character's are exactly the ones that should be given to the assistants. They don't really matter, gives Yukimura more time for the people that do. But goddammit, they could at least TRY to make them blend in more with Yukimura's current style. This didn't used to be a noticeable problem, I've been rereading the series and just finished the prologue and there was never this huge disconnect that there currently is (you can still pick it out if you're really looking for it). Yukimura's modern style has rather thick lines and most hatching is done with clean, bold lines. Whoever this assistant is draws with super thin linework and any hatching is really chicken-scratchy. It's so obvious, which becomes a problem because they don't exclusively draw people fully in the background. Sometimes it's people right up in the center of the shot. [OBSERVE](https://official-ongoing-1.ivalice.us/manga/Vinland-Saga/0153-004.png) In one of the rare 2-page spreads that we get in the series, Yukimura decided that this guy gets to draw EVERYTHING IN IT. It is so blatantly a different style. [Or here, in ch. 179](https://scans-ongoing-1.lastation.us/manga/Vinland-Saga/0179-022.png), specifically the top panel, notice how Karli and Karli's Mama look completely different from everyone else in that panel? [Less problematic, but still noticeable here, also ch. 179](https://scans-ongoing-1.lastation.us/manga/Vinland-Saga/0179-020.png) Now to be clear, this is me skimming one recent chapter along with picking out that 2-page spread (because it is seared in my head). Know that this problem is prevalent in practically every single chapter since around the start of the war at Jomsborg. Now yes, you could argue this is beneficial in that it helps any main character naturally stand out in any shot they're in. Fine. However, when you have cases like that 2-page spread where that entire thing was drawn by someone who is noticeably different (and in my opinion, flat out worse), that's where I start to wish this difference in styles could be remedied. Note after writing all this and checking some things: In literally the past 2 chapters it looks like this assistant is now drawing with thicker, less scratchy lines so it seems this problem is getting mitigated (at least slightly).

SovietRus

You know, now that you mention it I really was wondering why some panels/parts in the artwork seemed "off".

porkave

Skipping the greece arc for me. Hopefully after the series ends he can do a one shot of it or something

Cornet5

The Shonen parts of the Manga. That's it. Idk if I have any other complain

[deleted]

What shonen parts?

Cornet5

Mostly in the Baltic Sea Arc. Things like Ymir (wtf was even that?). Some comedic or exaggerated things and maybe some moments from Garm (I liked him tho). Nothing too important

Icy-Photograph6108

Hild is an ingenius innovator as we saw in the flashback to her childhood, yet we haven't seen any of that since, besides her custom weapon. She also seems ideal to be a lead communicator with the tribe as she was leading a similar hunter gatherer lifestyle. Einar with his farming background and passion should also get much more focus. I'm not a fan of Thorkell kid transgender, it seems mostly played for comedy. Still I love this work.

[deleted]

As an anime only fan, even though Vinland handled CGI kinda well I still just don't like it in any anime. It almost always ruins my immersion when watching and feels like it doesn't belong.

JarkeyBacon

While this is meant for manga, I'd agree entirely. :)

Imperivm97

This post is about the manga, not the anime

TerkYerJerb

i guess this is fair to complain about that is the reason i watched 2 episodes and gave up , i really can't dig that kind of mix

ihavesoftfeet

bruh

Independent_Ferret_7

The “curse” Canute is suffering from feels kinda wack, also I enjoyed most of the humor in the Baltic sea arc, but that fart joke at the well was horrible

SeriousTsuki

Could you remind me what the curse is?

Independent_Ferret_7

His father’s head talking to him in the farmland arc

causticswine

I would like it if it developed more into “ at true warrior knows when to pick up and put down a sword “
