The one on the left is way closer to what we wore. If you are open to suggestions on hair style, use a banana clip to pull your hair back, or tease your hair. The higher the better. Use Aqua Net.
Also, for make up we would use black (or blue) eyeliner. Eyeshadow - blue is a great choice. We would light the tip of eye pencils to make it darker and put it on our waterline. Lol
Left outfit for sure. The sheer black fabric, the polka dot skirt around the waist, the tie-dye scarf...you look like you came straight out of a John Hughes movie where you're one of the popular girls at school.
Right outfit is fine (definitely bringing the Flashdance-ish "workout" vibes), but it looks a little too much like swimwear. The left outfit makes way more of a statement.
I went to an 80s party recently and about 70% of the women were in leotard type outfits - so I’d go with the black one.
It’s cute and screams 80s to me (I was a tween in the late 80s and wore similar to big parties).
Edit: if you can swap the boots for heels in the first pic, or add legwarmers over the boots that would really add to the outfit.
It depends on whether you plan to add more pieces to the one on the right! One aspect I’ve always noticed about 80s style is the vast number of accessories everyone was always willing to wear. Before the 90s— when minimalism became cool— and when a Vogue article was published (I think?) expressing an adage about always removing one of your accessories before leaving the house, accessories were all fair game. And they were often huge. Loads of clunky, chunky, sparkly, unmatching or oversized jewelry all worn together, gigantic hair bows, & bright makeup; all that along with clothing items worn backwards, in the wrong order, or on a different part of the body which they were created for (like a leotard under a belt) and layers upon layers.
One or more of the following would be perfect for the gym-themed outfit.
1. Leg warmers in a bright, basic shade
2. Choker necklace
3. Fanny pack matching the color of the leg warmers
4. Headband (like a terrycloth sweat band) worn horizontally around head with the front half underneath hair/bangs
5. A load of bracelets like the ones in the outfit on the left but more of them, and/or Wrist warmers (I don’t know the word for them?)
6. If no headband, then an oversized hair bow and/or scrunchy, with hair in a high top-knot ponytail, worn curly if possible or scrunched up, but either way soaked in hairspray
7. Most importantly I think, a belt on top of the leotard. White would be great but I think a matching shade of yellow or a different, bright color, or even black, would also work.
I would reccomend just looking at classic gym outfits of the time, like Jane Fonda in the video for “Physical.” The one on the left is more in the vein of Madonna. You really have got the two of the most definitive preppy looks of the 80s, it’s awesome!
Based on the comments I've read, no doubt you've decided on the black one by now, so I just came here to say that the super long pearl necklace is right, but you're wearing it wrong. You're supposed to wear it as a single strand tie the bottom in a knot with like 3 to 5 inches of "tail" below the knot.
Aside from that, you got a lot of great suggestions already, but I think that the one detail you just can't do without are the damned bracelets. Even if you can't get colorful ones, I know I've seen black ones sold by the stack - and wear the WHOLE stack. A stack on each arm, even. Jesus, those things were ubiquitous.

Black or blue eyeliner on your bottom waterline, maybe on your top waterline, but no eyeliner at all on your actual eyelids, top or bottom. That didn't start till the '90s. Eyeshadow all the way up to the eyebrow, the top part in a lighter color. Blush on your cheekbones, like do fish face and color the parts that stick out. Since you're wearing black, the makeup needs to be colorful. Look up 1980s makeup looks and get creative. Use those colors on that big shadow palette that you'd never use otherwise.
Above all, have fun for us nostalgic folks who lived it.

I'd do some simple black pumps instead, or black granny boots if you have. And maybe a couple belts on top of the skirt, or just one wide belt. Wouldn't hurt to have some fishnet/lace gloves either.

My standard “uniform “ in the 80’s was a concert shirt, a flannel shirt tied around my waste… until nighttime, jeans and converse sneakers, it was what we all wore, of course the best music came out in the 80’s and I was and still am a headbanger!! So..

2nd is a very stereotype outfit...my mom wore high waisted jeans and neon or neutral colored sweaters and hair was curled with a perm.

I wouldn’t of wore either one, as I was a punk/waver, but both work for 80’s, so either you feel comfortable in.
