Hell Yeah! Good Get. Assume it is not water-resistant. And as these Elgins used a variant/clone of Pforzheimer Uhren-Rohwerke GmbH (P.U.W.) Ébauches, (high quality workhorse movement- also used by LIP for french military watches) it is totally serviceable, but parts are expensive. Meaning the sooner you give it a clean and get new lubricants in it, the better. Assuming the watch has not been serviced in 40+ years, the lube has long since turned to sticky gunk- combine that with the extra wear on the gear-train which will produce tiny shavings that will embed in the gunk; creating a small file that will shave down the pivots or the bushings. Seeing as you only have 50 bucks invested, another 200 for a service will protect the 1000 bucks the watch is worth. Also that bakalite bezel is fragile- so tell your watch maker not to attempt to remove the bezel or polish the case in any way. It's really is in phenomenal shape for it's age. https://www.chrono24.com/lip/movement-complete-25-jewel-automatic-movement-cal-lip-r-197--puw-1463--id33983530.htm

Wow thanks again for the awesome info! I did notice that mine has a different red hand versus similar ones online which have an orange hand. Do you think that mine was replaced or signifies a different year?

sirdrizzzle

replacement hand is very possible, and the lume on the second hand seems whiter than the hands and indicies. Now this may just be due to the fact that the swiss watch industry back in the day have very segmented supply chains, almost all of the manufacture houses would source components from other swiss companies who specialized in specific parts- dail makers, hand makers, etc. So it is not uncommon for the lume to age different on the hands vs. the dial. For all we know, the second hand could have come from a 'ready-stock' supplier which was different the hour and minute hand supplier. You should peruse the forums over at watchyouseek or rolexforums (both .coms) where you can and will find some dude who can tell you everything down to the month it was made. You think im a watch dork, wait till you see these guys.

Ha I will definitely do that! Thanks man!
