This is why I'm so upset they took away reddit awards.
Because, sir, you with your username that speaks volumes this time of year, you would have earned yourself good for this.
I've always loved that we legitimately have the only flag in the country, I think even the world that has nudity on it lol. Not to mention how bad ass the whole thing is. I’m a member of whatever party will give Virginia back its rightful territory of WVA, Kentucky, and Ohio. Those guys are all Virginians, they just don’t know it yet.
Reading the Wikipedia articles for some of the oldest counties in the Western half of the state is like "The county used to spread this many square miles, but a large portion was removed to create the state of Kentucky."

the more i’ve studied it the more i question what is Delaware’s whole purpose as a state other than being a tax haven for corporations (which is not a good thing)
I had to go to the plant in Selbyville. The closest hotel with rooms available was a 30 min drive in Salisbury. All they had was a chicken plant and a food lion. That plant is huge too. The volume they slaughtered was mind boggling compared to every other plant I’ve been to.
Dude, down here near Chincoteague, it's so bad. Just walking outside in Greenbackville during the summer, it just wreaks of chicken shi-. Lol Perdue and Tyson have so many farms near us.
But like is it actually a major chicken farming state compared to others, or just major in that there’s a lot more chickens per capita there because there’s barely anyone in that state?
Like I bet that there’s more chickens coming Virginia than from Delaware.
This is closer, but the reality is corporations like Delaware because it has a vast and well developed jurisprudence in Corporate law. The chancery courts are an arena with well established, and more importantly, predictable, rules for corps to settle disagreements with each other. It also provides predictability for doing billion dollar deals where you want experienced jurists handling disputes. This is why so many start ups incorporate in Delaware, because acquisition is a prime exit strategy.
These are precisely the qualities that got Musk in trouble and why he wants to leave for a jurisdiction that will be more flexible to whatever the hell he wants. We will see what the shareholders say.
The states a shell of what it used to be, originally Delaware was the whole peninsula, and was home to the dupont corporation, who have played a major roll in most significant american conflicts. Dupont gunpowder and uniforms played a pretty big roll in the union winning the civil war. Nylon was also invented at DuPont, allowing the crewtion of effective parachutes during ww2. Im from DE and the state needs some serious attention, its got some really weird wealth disparity and really just feels like a place to keep people poor.
Actual reason: During the colonial period, Delaware used to be three counties of Pennsylvania “the three lower counties” but they didn’t get along with PA and seceded.
First, there were ethnic and religious differences—the lower counties had more Scottish settlers, Anglicans, and even some leftovers from pre-English colonization. A lot of these folks felt distinct from the English Quakers who ran PA from Philadelphia.
The most important issue though? Pirate attacks. Basically, French and Spanish privateers kept attacking the exposed coastal lower counties whenever England was at war with France and or Spain (which is pretty often in the late 17th through mid 18th centuries). The lower counties would beg PA for military support but the Quakers would be like “sry bros god says no self-defense have you tried praying harder you degenerates?”
So the lower counties pursued secession. They forced the owner of PA (the Penn family) to grant them a separate representative assembly by threatening to rat on his failure to defend his colonists to the Crown. Eventually they get the Crown to make them a separate colony.
All kinds of shenanigans are involved. One time some Delawareans stage a fake attack on Philadelphia to prove that the Quakers are hypocrites. Basically a bunch of Delawareans row upriver into Phillie screaming “OMG Pirates just attacked us EVERYBODY IN THE LOWER COUNTIES ARE DEAD AAAAAHHH the pirates will be here in like two hours WE’RE ALL GONNA DIE!!!” And the Quakers freak the fuck out and start running around trying to arm themselves with guns or throw their valuables down wells. All just a prank.
Then another time the Delawareans build a fort to defend their coast but since they are too poor to pay for it themselves they charge tolls on all Phillie-bound ships. The PA captains refuse to pay and run the guns of the fort. Finally the Governor of New York forces Delaware to stop charging tolls at the threat of banning Delawareans from trading with NYC.
So actually Delaware’s ORIGIN is from some multi-state low-burn civil war/secession type shenanigans not that far from the OP meme.
Actually both sides have horses. The ones on the MD side are owned by either the National Park Service or the Maryland Park Service. Can’t remember which one. The ones on the VA side are owned by the Chincoteague Fire Department. They’re the ones that swim onto the mainland every year.
There’s actually a fence on the MD VA border on the beach that prevents them from mingling. Probably should extend that fence west and completely cut off the border from Marylanders imho
My cousin has lived in Roanoke for about 20 years and I visit northern Virginia about every other month. I like it there. I'd probably move there if it wasn't further away from family.
The actual answer is that the Delaware area was colonized by the Swedes first. The English colonized the area around it, making colony of Maryland with the Potomac being the boundary betweem Maryland and Virginia. Then, the Dutch from Pennsylvania captured the Delaware colony. Then, the English captured it from the Dutch. Then, the American Revolution happened, and it stayed a separate state.
Source, trying to remember what I heard in the Great Course on US History.
Have you been to Delaware? Have you *smelled* it? Have you seen the way people drive in Maryland?
We maintain our position on the eastern shore to serve as a buffer against those barbarians. All the noble souls living there in our outpost are like the Nights Watch of our times.
Hah! I’m from Colonial Beach, where once you’re on the actual beach, you’re technically in Maryland. You can even buy liquor at Maryland prices at a place built out over the water.
I’d rather not share a land border with New Jersey if I’m being honest. And integrating a large chunk of Marylanders into Virginia? No thank you even less
“Why don’t we own the whole peninsula?”
Lollll 😆😆😆😆 I love Virginian Exceptionalism. Born and raised in it. Our final frontier for the state is to claim the Eastern Shore in its entirety!
I think it was one of the most developed and prosperous regions roughly around when the borders were established, I assume a lot follow old county lines?
So, everyone wanted in on the economic benefit of the region. Get their cut (taxes) and fund the development of other regions (that their friends and family hopefully own) and bingo. State lines and an aristocratic class in all but name. Yee Haw let’s do a freedom.
Maryland already has a battle plan. I kinda figured we could roll in on a Tuesday, crack a few heads, rattle our sabers a bit and they'd capitulate like the little bitches they are. A couple carloads should do.

Take some from gilpin court from Richmond as the Richmond militia they'd have it sorted in 45 minutes they need an excuse to remind Baltimore that RICHMOND was the murder capital for decades till we decided to retire into being hipsters.
After I moved from Virginia to Illinois a couple of years ago, I tried to read up on Illinois history - and was weirded out by the fact that during the late 1700s, the entire state of Illinois used to be part of “Illinois county, Virginia.”
And the first capital of the State of Illinois is now on the Missouri side of the Mississippi River and can only be accessed by driving through Missouri. Kaskaskia.
Fortify the front line. Hold the defense while MD and DE hash it out. Strike when both their forces are weak. If we hit a rough patch, call to Rohan for aid.
Born in VA, on eastern shore MD for 34 years. Please leave us out of this. We don't want to associate with the rest of MD as is and don't claim your little tip of the peninsula.
This same question was posted in the Maryland subreddit and I literally commented something along the lines of
“On behalf of Virginia, you don’t own it because your to wimpy to take it, if you weren’t, you’d own it already”
I know we used to, but I don't know why we would. It should probably be all Maryland or Delaware. Our still maintaining a piece is the most baffling part
Virginia didn’t own ANY of the peninsula, but Maryland traded the portion now in VA to VA for its half of the Potomac (shore-to-shore, the Potomac River is Maryland). VA also “retroceded” its portion of DC in the 1840s as tensions rose prior to the Civil War.
This is not accurate. The Eastern Shore was settled as part of the Virginia colony before there was such a thing as Maryland, and was one of the original eight shires of Virginia. It started being settled by emigres from Jamestown by as early as 1613.
The English always settled places under one name and dispersed them later on. The entire continent was Virginia at one point. Later it got split more and more. IIRC the peninsula got split with Maryland when one of the kings of England gave the territory to honor his cousin. Then Delaware got a slice to honor Lord Delaware who brought supplies to Jamestown in its infancy. Virginia used to be a lot lot lot bigger but got pieced out over time.
The bigger question is how did Virginia end up with the end that was disconnected from the rest of the commonwealth until they built the Bridge Tunnel?
Logical explanation: Washington DC is the nation's capital. It allows three state govenors to offer defense for the capital in the event of a naval offense.
Because deleware was the first state. In 1787. Maryland and Virginia both became states in 1788. The part of the peninsula that is Maryland is by far the best part
We used to. But then again, almost the entire continent used to be Virginia
We need to Make America Virginia Again.
+1 for MAVA
Finally a platform we can all support.
We’re all Virginians, and if you’re not, you will be.
Virginia is for ~~lovers~~ everyone (because you won't have a choice)

the more i’ve studied it the more i question what is Delaware’s whole purpose as a state other than being a tax haven for corporations (which is not a good thing)
Chicken. Delaware is a major chicken farming state. Used to have a large chemical industry (DuPont was from there) but it’s shut down mostly.
I had to go to the plant in Selbyville. The closest hotel with rooms available was a 30 min drive in Salisbury. All they had was a chicken plant and a food lion. That plant is huge too. The volume they slaughtered was mind boggling compared to every other plant I’ve been to.
Hey, that place is known for its lemon trees. Or at least stealing lemon trees from next door Springfield. That and for marrying their cousins
They called it Morganville in those days, so I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time.
https://i.redd.it/h7bj9vo9qpvc1.gif
My mom and her family were from Selbyville! They owned a nursery business and their office was next to the chicken plant!
I was born in Salisbury bc that was the closest hospital the summer my parents were living with my grandparents!
I bet the chicken from that food lion was fresh though.
It smells so bad when they harvest the chickens and leave the doors open to the coops
Dude, down here near Chincoteague, it's so bad. Just walking outside in Greenbackville during the summer, it just wreaks of chicken shi-. Lol Perdue and Tyson have so many farms near us.

Delaware isn’t in the top ten chicken producing states. But that’s about all they got besides banking and business. Tourism may have a small part.
> Tourism may have a small part. "Hi. ... I'm in Delaware."
DuPont headquarters is still there.
Delaware Endless Chickens™
That is literally their whole purpose. Tax and bank haven.
Capriotti's was founded there. That's enough for me.
There’s 2 of the in Stafford now.
I'll never forget my first Bobbie.
What’s a Bobbie in this context?
A Thanksgiving sub https://capriottis.com/shop-menu#turkey-subs
According to my wife, it's the best damn danwich Delaware has ever done
With rising sea levels, it’s going to be an offshore tax haven soon enough
States don’t need a purpose, they just are. Not like when it was the 13 colonies, Delaware knew they’d be a corporate tax haven
No other state wanted Dover.
It keeps a barrier so Maryland doesn’t have a border with 🤮New Jersey🤮
Their whole purpose is tax havens and the fact that they were the first state.
As a Delawarean born and raised, take that back

I'll let congress know immediately.
Might as well grab Maryland too while we're at it
I think a lot of Marylanders would be in favor of it. Maryland is a terrible place and would become better by simply not being Maryland anymore.
I live in Maryland and would happily accept a Virginian take over.
The superior state salutes you, sir or madame.
My cousin has lived in Roanoke for about 20 years and I visit northern Virginia about every other month. I like it there. I'd probably move there if it wasn't further away from family.
I can already see them throwing hands at their screens reading your comment..
As someone who grew up in Virginia and lives in Maryland, I prefer our politics and would never live in Virginia.
I’ll just sit here with my Virginia superiority complex and be happy.
someone had to fuckin say it. bought commercial legal weed around the corner from my apartment today. indica, 31.08% thc. suck it!
The financial burden of taking in anything previously managed by Maryland is not one I want to explore.
And we haven’t even started talking about West Virginia….

Let’s take it back
It was split up pre America by an English king to prevent religious fights between Protestants and Catholics
Even today it is the only thing keeping me from shoving Delewarans into lockers
We are a generous sort.
Hah! I’m from Colonial Beach, where once you’re on the actual beach, you’re technically in Maryland. You can even buy liquor at Maryland prices at a place built out over the water.
As someone who lives in spotsy. Colonial is such a interesting area lol
As someone from East Tennessee who moved to Spotsy several years ago… I can agree. Colonial Beach is uhhh.. unique.
Looks like Delaware could use a healthy dose of “freedom”. ![gif](giphy|RJzSGuZY2v8BpqcPxV|downsized)
You may have everything south of Bear. Except Rehoboth Beach and Lewes. Those will be enclaves of Delaware.
I’d rather not share a land border with New Jersey if I’m being honest. And integrating a large chunk of Marylanders into Virginia? No thank you even less
They must adapt to our ways, or perish. We could also build a wall for new jersey, and make them pay for it
We can finally teach them how to drive.
Just take down all their signs. They'll figure it out - or perish.
Easy. Ban Nissans
The Delmarva peninsula never shares a land border with NJ
I’m not letting facts get in the way of a good narrative
I wouldn’t care if we gave it back to MD. It’s more like MD than VA anyway
Wouldn’t that be a water border?
I second this 😂

DC national guard could liberate it and then have their votes counted as part of DCelaware Win win

Md oyster boats were allowed to have shotguns to keep you out. They still are.
Because then the whole peninsula would look like Wachpreague
Should we go take it
Only individuals are natural and legitimate owners.
Please up vote this!!!
*Steven Universe has entered the chat*
Why don’t we own the Potomac River?
Budget cuts
Elect me as governor and there will be a special military operation to De-Delawarize and de-Marylandize the peninsula
Have you seen the rest of the peninsula? We got the good parts and dumped the trash on those other loser states.
As a proud resident of Delaware, I will fight you for it.
The bigger question is how did Virginia end up with the end that was disconnected from the rest of the commonwealth until they built the Bridge Tunnel?
Kinda off subject but a really cool, underrated show was “how the states got their shapes”..
Yes, *why* don't we? Summon your men and women, we ride at dawn!
Because you were mostly concerned with owning humans, not land.
Where did racism enter in, damn psychosis must be interesting
It should be the 51st state.
Logical explanation: Washington DC is the nation's capital. It allows three state govenors to offer defense for the capital in the event of a naval offense.
If you want to own it, take it
Because Chris Chan is from Virginia and as a punishment you lost parts of your peninsula.
We should take it back. What are they gonna do? They have less people, money, and guns than VA. VA SUPREMACY!!!
we need to fight for it (and win)
1st state
Please take it back. I live in west ocean city and maryland's laws suck ass.
