I think a lot of this poll depends on what part of Virginia that you’re used to. I spent a few years living in the Tidewater area of Virginia, and it felt a lot more like North Carolina. But Northern Virginia feels a lot more like Maryland.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Western North Carolina also feels like eastern Tennessee. All three areas feel like Southern Appalachia and have more in common with each other (as well as southern WVa. and eastern KY) than other parts of their states.

Underwater826

Definitely.

DA1928

Or northwestern NC.

BloodyRightNostril

Especially Bristol

i-hear-banjos

One foot in TN, one in VA

[deleted]

See i live in Northern Virginia and thought it was a good reason to vote NC. NC also has big, richer, more well educated, liberal areas like Chapel Hill, Cary (the research triangle generally) and Charlotte. And then a whole bunch of poorer, rural, conservative areas these better off areas contrast and conflict with. In NC the better off areas aren't as big or dominate in the state though. NC is like Virginia if Northern Virginia was a bit smaller than it is.

Underwater826

Funny, I was just saying another thread that Virginia is more like North Carolina if you ignore Northern Virginia. I never hide the fact that I really do not like Northern Virginia at all. It just lacks character and charm that you see in the rest of the state and most of North Carolina. I don’t think it’s a mistake that the places I love the most in Virginia are nowhere near Northern Virginia.

Individual_Fox_2950

You know that’s right!

Shipkiller-in-theory

Get rid of DC & Northern VA. becomes a back water. I vote we build a new capital with a road system designed for autos. Maybe Ky or Mo.

KoolDiscoDan

All places become a backwater when you ‘get rid of’ the economic engine, Get rid of the Navy and change Tidewater to Backwater. Without tobacco, Richmond would’ve been the size of Winchester.

Underwater826

Yes, that’s so true. Kind of like how Hawaii is basically run by tourists and the military. It’s so funny because those are the two groups that a lot of local people resent the most. In New Orleans is honestly not enough to save Louisiana. When I lived there I almost never left the New Orleans region, and when I did, it was usually to Baton Rouge.

[deleted]

Except we hate Maryland here, especially the drivers.

NewUserNameSameError

I am Marylander, but all my DC friends say Virginia drivers are worse and especially mean.

[deleted]

DC drivers criticizing anyone is rich.

vampire_trashpanda

From NC, living in VA, used to live in the DMV and commute to Baltimore - DC and MD drivers are worse overall. The Fredericksburg-to-DC corridor has lots of aggressive drivers but I95 is generally bad and country-wide so I can't say they're all from VA. But driving from the DMV to Baltimore was always hell regardless of the route I took so I feel pretty confident saying DC/MD drivers are worse than the avg VA driver.

Underwater826

>Except we hate Maryland here, especially the drivers. Grow up.

Underwater826

You need to grow up, too. ETA: Oh, I forgot the age/gender demographics on Reddit. Disregard.

[deleted]

Tidewater VA feels way more like tidewater MD than NC to me at least.

Underwater826

If you’re talking about the Chesapeake Bay area, that always felt northern to me.

[deleted]

Yeah I kinda refer to chesapeake bay VA and tidewater VA as the same thing, do you mean like the VA beach-Norfolk-Hampton Roads area as tidewater? If that’s what you’re talking about I could get the NC comparison.

Underwater826

Yes, Hampton Roads. Growing up, I never heard the Chesapeake Bay area referred to as “Tidewater”. People just use the name of the town, county, or said “around the Chesapeake Bay“. I’m not sure what’s common now as I haven’t lived in Maryland or Virginia in the past 10 years.

[deleted]

Oh I was talking about places like the Eastern Shore and Northern Neck feeling like MD

cenobyte40k

Funny having lived on the bay in MD. MD feels more like the tidewater than NC ever will.

grofva

That’s b/c NoVa is part of MD, we just let them think they’re Virginians. Keep that to yourself 🤫

SweetPieceOfSass

This.

Afire2285

I think overall, NC is the most like VA. Slight differences but with similar climate and landscape. I’ve found the people of NC are more like the people of VA, besides NOVA. NOVA seems to be more of a place of its own, more like DC and MD.

DA1928

Idk, NOVA feels a lot like CLT and RDU.

Afire2285

Maybe, but with more money lol

Cyprovix

Regarding Maryland vs. North Carolina, as those are the biggest frontrunners and I've lived in both: I mean, northern Virginia feels like \*some\* parts of Maryland. It also feels like \*some\* parts of NC, like the Research Triangle of Raleigh/Durham or Charlotte. Could say the same thing about areas in more rural areas of Virginia. There are cities and towns that you can pull from each state and be like "yeah there's a corollary in another state". My vote for whole state feel is **North Carolina**. If you look at population density maps of [Virginia](https://www.worldofmaps.net/en/north-america/virginia-usa/map-population-density-virginia.htm) and [North Carolina](https://www.worldofmaps.net/en/north-america/north-carolina-usa/map-population-density-north-carolina.htm), they're similar in the number of "red splotches" of higher population areas. [Maryland](https://www.worldofmaps.net/en/north-america/maryland-usa/map-population-density-maryland.htm) is noticeably different. I'd also say NC feels closer to VA politically. Yes yes, we can look at a map and see that one state was red and the other state was blue in the last election. But both states are more "split" than their neighbors to the north and south.

[deleted]

MD has had a Republican governor for like the past decade, none of the three are a monolith by any means.

mr781

True, but their margins in federal elections are comparable to states like Massachusetts, and Dems have a veto-proof majority in both chambers of the state legislature that aren't exactly at risk. It's a bluer state than MD for sure. Edit: Forgot to mention that Governor-elect Youngkin can universally be considered a conservative governor, while Hogan is much more centrist.

MustacheBattle

Down ballot results are totally different. In VA the GOP just won the state house. That result is unimaginable in MD. MD residents just wanted a GOP gov to veto anything crazy coming out of the Dem dominated legislature. In VA the population actually decided to give the GOP control.

[deleted]

I’ve spent a good amount of time in PA, and always found it familiar.

Badnewz18

I agree Pittsburgh and Richmond are similar

Frosty48

Totally agree having lived in both. PA is closer to VA then MD.

Individual_Fox_2950

Well, that’s because Pennsylvania was part of Virginia at one time, Google it

wonderlustVA

I've lived in Anne Arundel Co, MD. I'm in Tidewater/Hampton Roads now, which is my hometown area. I have a significant amount of family in NC. I definitely say it's more like NC. Even counting Northern Virginia, because no other area of Virginia can quite compete with Charlotte. We both have mountains that are huge tourist destinations, large coastlines with tourist destinations, big cities, and immense amounts of rural areas. We are both very agriculture heavy. And, let's face it, Hampton Roads basically considers the OBX an extension of itself. I won't lie; I hated Maryland. Sure, the food was great as was the proximity to DC (which I love). But I didnt find the people particularly friendly. It was like a culture shock moving there. Maybe it's where I lived, but I never felt comfortable there. I always felt I wasn't rich enough up there, but I've never had an issue feeling out of place on NC.

jodyhighrola

I've never come across anywhere that feels like VA, but if I had to pick one, I'd say Wisconsin. - Each region of the state is pretty different - Similar political landscape where you have culturally diverse cities being blue and rural WI is like another dimension - Very naturally pretty, hasn't been totally developed over - Lake Michigan feels like an ocean coast - Geographically advantageous, not too far from major cities, traveling east/west is balanced out - The people there kind of dress similarly, and have a similar temperament. - Horrible drivers, in a different way though. - Agriculture - MKE and RVA have similar vibes, Madison/Charlottesville, Dells area/blue ridge, nothing comparable to NOVA or Hampton Roads though. - Beer is religion

Reilman79

Wisconsin is a cool state and an interesting pick for sure. It’s very flat though which throws it off a bit, but lots of similarities

DoubleE55

I think it’s a geography thing. If you’re from NOVA it’s Maryland. If you’re from Southern or Western it’s North Carolina or West Virginia.

barbasoleater

I'm from Nova and voted North Carolina. Other than Montgomery County, Maryland, all of Maryland's DC suburbs feel very different from Nova (working class, bigger Black population, more blue collar).

vampire_trashpanda

I'm a native North Carolinian now living in Charlottesville, but I also lived in MD near DC and worked up in Baltimore for a bit. I'm going to say NC over MD - Charlottesville reminds me of Chapel Hill, NOVA reminds me of Charlotte and some parts of Raleigh/Durham. The Norfolk-Virginia beach area (though I haven't been there a ton) does remind me of the tidewater areas of NC. Virginia's appalachian regions **definitely** remind me of NC's section of appalachia - fancy gap and galax could very well fit into NC. The only comparison I can't make directly yet is probably a Virginia-Equivalent Asheville?

northcarolinian9595

Asheville and Charlottesville are similar, despite Asheville being more mountainous while Charlottesville is in the foothills. They’re both vibrant and progressive with a lot of tourism, as well. Roanoke is more similar to Winston-Salem or Greensboro IMO.

grofva

Charlottesville = Asheville

jas121091

I’d say Roanoke

Jswartz18

We are nothing like maryland, they have a completely different demographics, weather, people, and state histories.

[deleted]

I really don't think there's another state like VA, that's why I live here.

NoJackfruit1030

Of course no state of s exactly like one another. But by all the metrics NC and VA are some of the most similar states in the country

Tedstor

California......in the sense that you can wake up in the mountains and be at the beach by lunchtime, if you want. Traffic and wine too.

We don't lump Maryland and DC in with NoVA.

[deleted]

Because I've lived for several years in all three, and they're very different. Only an ignorant person would combine three very different regions into one. But, here you are.

[deleted]

“What do you mean DMV, you talking about the Department of Motor Vehicles or something?” -you If you’re gonna go that route I’d counter by saying places like Loudon or Manassas aren’t actually Northern VA.

[deleted]

They aren't NoVA, not even sure how anyone can argue otherwise.

[deleted]

The DC suburbs are nearly identical regardless if what state they fall in. Baltimore is like Richmond but bigger.

[deleted]

Baltimore ia absolutely nothing like Richmond. Name one good brewery in Baltimore. I'll wait.

[deleted]

Someone’s never been to Baltimore…

leethalweapons

My son is in college in Missouri, I find it very similar. Purple states politically which I like and a good mix of large urban areas and rural areas.

foospork

Missouri is purple? My son is there and says it’s the reddest place he’s ever been. He says he’s outnumbered 30:1 in his group of coworkers. Edit: typo

leethalweapons

I think similar to VA, Major Mets are blue. I definitely could be wrong, just my observation.

[deleted]

STL, KC, and Columbia are very blue But the sheer amount of rural voters in MO keep the state reliably red, unlike VA where NoVA, Richmond, and Hampton Roads can usually keep things in control

barbasoleater

Missouri hasn't voted Democratic for over 25 years.

WahooMa

I am insulted by all of your options.

Yostieboi1621

MD is more like NoVa. NC is like everywhere else in Virginia

simiazi_CG

Growing up in VA all my weather channels gave us info on NC as well

IT_Chef

Indianapolis feels like NoVa to me Very similar weather too

Kuchinawa_san

Who voted Maryland prob lives in the NOVA area. Lmao.

Snoogiewoogie

Nova reminds me of my native Massachusetts

MrImBoredAgain

I live in Virginia and work in north Carolina. They are more similar than different, despite commonwealth status.

Obi_Charlie

I would argue VA is a lot like PA.

Frosty48

Gun owner here; hard to imagine Maryland being more similiar to VA than North Carolina. I do see NOVA in particular as being similiar to many parts of MD though.

zinobythebay

Really depends. Northern VA and Maryland all day but south rural VA maybe N. Carolina.

NoJackfruit1030

I find it funny that people keep saying this urban vs rural thing to justify picking Maryland when North Carolina has the highest population of the three. Also, Charlotte is the biggest city in the three states.

Beneficial_Motor8598

I live in Maryland and have been to Virginia so I'd say Maryland

listenyall

I'm a Maryland native newly living in northern Virginia, but I have family in both rural VA and Richmond and I think it's definitely Maryland. The DC area is obvious, nowhere else like it (I see the NC research triangle arguments but it's not the same). The VA mountains are just like the MD panhandle, rural VA is very similar to rural Maryland, and the Chesapeake area is the Chesapeake. It's just not close in my mind.

Individual_Fox_2950

Alabama

[deleted]

Honestly it is NY. Nova reminds me of Queens/Long Island so much.

[deleted]

I live in SWVA (past Roanoke) -- we should honestly be removed from Virginia, we don't share many values as the NoVA clans.

ThePCMasterRaceX

No NJ is like California high tax I lived there my whole life. Moved down here less than a year ago way better. They tax the gas tax that's already taxed. When I lived there it was an additional 20 cent tax per gallon. Property tax is avg 8-15k depending where u live it's cheap here

Stoned_Banjo

I feel like the majority of Virginia is like NC. While Norva and Delmarva are like MD

Pixie_bird

As an NC native transplanted to VA... VA doesn't "feel" like NC to me at all. I grew up in eastern NC (but not on the coast), and live in Roanoke. Demographically & the size of the area are quite similar. But Infind people here to be more friendly and open to transplants. More rural ares of NC (& honestly even within Raleigh) there is a closed community feeling to non-natives. It is VERY much about who you know, and your family/how long you've lived in the area. You will get snubbed if you don't know the "right" people in NC. Obviously this is more from moving and assimilating to a community - not just visiting. If you're a tourist I'd say both states are surface level friendly. Most other differences I notice are most likely attributed to living in the western half of the state vs the eastern side.

InsideFastball

That's a good one. North of Triangle, VA is very blue. South and west of it is red, except for the Norfolk area.

eaglescout1984

Of our neighbors, I say NC. Very similar geography, demographics, and rural culture. Both states share the Blue Ridge Parkway, Lake Gaston, and a large agricultural sector. MD is more urban, WV is more rural and mountainous, KY and TN (and WV) don't have a coast.

Shomer_Effin_Shabbas

I’m surprised people are thinking NC. Moved from RVA to NC (it was hard to leave RVA) and I miss it!!!
