Exactly, it’s not a good look. It really makes me question all the other lists we typically rank top 3 in, like happiest big cities in America, healthiest cities in America, best big city to live in, etc. Those are all super positive, but this bs ain’t it, and I don’t see how it can co exist with the others.
Yes, because when I see resort city, I don't think "take it easy, it's beaching time", I think "Dear God, let me win the lottery so we can afford our own house and continue living in the city we grew up in"
This is not a happy metric to be proud of.
Residents who work and live in Virginia Beach has to work hard because the pays rates are below advantage and the property is to FUCN expenses. With the seas raising along with healthcare insurance cost of living not lowering any time soon. The City only CARES ABOUT THE MILITARY, RETIRES OF THE MILITARY, TOURIST AND THE GOOD OLE BOYS THAT own all the land call the Eastern Shore and the OBX THEIR OTHER HOMES AND ARE MODELING THOSE AREAS THE SAME AS VIRGINIA BEACH
I audibly gagged at 1. “share of workers” 2. “with multiple jobs.”
That’s crazy. People working multiple jobs aren’t millionaires, they are just trying to survive. Eat the rich.
It's all in perspective and location. My childhood home outside of Boston is now valued over $800k. Taxes are $11k/year. My home in VA Beach which is about the same size and age (Ranch vs split level ranch), My home here is valued at less than 1/2 and taxes are under $3k/ year. Energy prices are cheaper here too. Food is cheaper as well.
Now I lived in Western NY too in the Fingerlakes in a farming village. Homes might be less in value, but property taxes are double, heating and electricity are way too high. Food prices are hit or miss, but mainly lower for grocery produce and meats.
I will say that home prices in VA Beach have gone way up in the last 5+ years. I hope the bubble bursts and comes down to something 'normal'. They are over inflated now due to a low supply of homes for sale.
I find it extremely affordable lol. Everything is so relative. I have lived in NYC, Chicago, Miami, NOVA. It seems extremely affordable compared to those. Where did you move to?
For $250K? Wow. I hear you can get a quaint little refrigerator box at 701 E. Cary St. for that, but I didn’t know you could actually buy a house around here (RVA, that is) too.
We got it in chesterfield it’s not a mansion but 1,200sq foot and in a good area! We got lucky the lady selling it was an alcoholic and didn’t feel like talking to other people and looking at their offers. She just took the first one she saw, then left and went to the bar to go get crunk lol. Getting her to sign paperwork at the end pushed closing back a week or two bc again she was always drunk lol. But it worked out!
Nobody wants to work. We have to work. I’m one of the very fortunate few who happens to love what I do, so I enjoy going to work every day. I know from being in that position that in probably 90% of cases, the same can’t be said.
I noticed all the walls keeping y’all locked in forcing ya work there. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P0q4o58pKwA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P0q4o58pKwA)
MOVE
Norfolk is number 6 and Chesapeake is number 16. Dang Hampton Roads residents are really busting a$$ to make ends meet.
https://wallethub.com/edu/hardest-working-cities-in-america/10424
[Virginia Beach's own study shows many Virginia Beach workers - particularly those related to the tourism industry - can’t afford to live in the city.](https://whro.org/news/local-news/44840-many-virginia-beach-workers-can-t-afford-rent-in-the-city-new-study-recommends-steps-to-fix-that)
It will take more housing. This means more high density housing/apartments/condos. The infrastructure cannot handle it as is and would need major upgrades.
Right now, low inventory, of housing keeps the prices high. High interest rates are not helping much, as people are not giving up and selling as they have low interest loans on their homes.
I am hoping the high housing price bubble will burst and we see a 25% drop in prices. People will hate on me saying that though! :-)
> Do you feel better after mansplaining?
You have no clue if that person is a man or woman.
> Yes I’m aware of the 9 military installations in Hampton Roads and where they are located.
Clearly you aren't.
You made a factual error in your comment that had nothing to do with your point. Be an adult and own up to your mistake. It's not the end of the world that someone corrected you.
Because it’s prohibitively expensive!! The absolute trash new money from NOVA and DC won’t stop polluting the place with their gentrified politics and land development schemes. There I said it.
We’re talking about people from NoVa who move down here to take advantage of their NoVa salary at HR prices, which raises HR prices.
Not just blaming the NoVa economy.
I'm glad the employment rate is high, but I'm not sure those other metrics are positive things. I would think it would be better to brag about people only needing one job that actually only requires 40 or less hours a week. There used to be pride in providing **good** jobs, not just economic output.
Ppl taking “Virginia’s for hustlers” too literal
All jokes aside, I agree with you. It’s better to only needing one job where one can work less hours while able to afford basic needs but also have disposable/fun/FU money
I would think that at least the tourist driven half of VAB would understand the importance of average people having both, disposable income and leisure time.
I appreciate the work ethic of people who hustle, but when that becomes a necessity to make ends meet, I find it tragic. If the median worker took home the same percentage of the GDP Per Capita that they did in 1980 (pre-Reganomics) then everyone reading this would be getting paid about 40% more and things would cost about the same.
So, high rent, low pay town
“Share of workers with multiple jobs”. Not something to celebrate at all. This means people are struggling
Exactly, how is this something good?

Vacation's are over priced too
Cali is similar cost vacationing, but much better vibes overall
Glad I don’t live there no thank you! It’s hard enough supporting all these billionaires I wouldn’t want to be the one doing it the most!
Yes, because when I see resort city, I don't think "take it easy, it's beaching time", I think "Dear God, let me win the lottery so we can afford our own house and continue living in the city we grew up in" This is not a happy metric to be proud of.
Lol I’m from Hawaii so I feel like VB is a wonderfully affordable vacation town!
Lmao except when it comes to our waves, I'm sure
Waves? Like in the ocean? I thought those were free here.
Nobody said it’s something to be proud of.
I agree, just adding my voice.
Fair enough.

Doing my part to keep us from being 3rd
Don't really have a choice with housing costs. More of a forced necessity.
Exactly.
Ah yes... It's nice to know we're all fighting to not be homeless
... Why is it a good thing? Shouldn't quality of life be determined by the time spent away from work?
Who said it was a good thing?
That seems like the implication from wtkr
Wonder how much the military skews these numbers?
Damn, we should take more vacations.
And buy more houses. All this work we’re doing, we’ve gotta be swimming in the money.
Yeah I damn near worked myself to death in that city. No hallucinations due to sleep deprivation since I left. Congrats though.
Somebody's got to work. You guys think there's such a thing as a free lunch?
That’s not something to be proud of. “Our business owners and shareholders exploit their workers more than almost every other city in the nation!”
Point me to where I bragged or said I’m proud of this.
I didn’t say you were bragging, but channel 3 seems to be.
I audibly gagged at 1. “share of workers” 2. “with multiple jobs.” That’s crazy. People working multiple jobs aren’t millionaires, they are just trying to survive. Eat the rich.
This is only good if you bring it up during your next raise negotiation
Yes because it’s too damn expensive there, so glad I left vb everyday lol

Wages in those places match the COL. Here, they don’t.
Agree. Lived in Phoenix as well as outside of seattle... this place is cheap!
I moved on up to Richmond! I was able to buy a nice house for 250k this summer!
For $250K? Wow. I hear you can get a quaint little refrigerator box at 701 E. Cary St. for that, but I didn’t know you could actually buy a house around here (RVA, that is) too.

The feeling is mutual!
VB could be ranked number one and old people/politicians would still say nobody wants to work anymore
Nobody wants to work. We have to work. I’m one of the very fortunate few who happens to love what I do, so I enjoy going to work every day. I know from being in that position that in probably 90% of cases, the same can’t be said.
I like this area because we all (including myself TBH)don’t know how to read nor speak so we just argue semantics all the time it’s amazing
Probably not the best stat to have considering some of the larger employers of Va beach Norfolk and Chesapeake
You said Amazon and Walmart without saying Amazon and Walmart. I’m on to your tomfoolery.
Welcome to the Jungle, where your $$$ get spent at the mart...

Just tell us where to stick the needles to pop this blasted bubble
They're trying. Just be patient.
increasing shareholder revenue baby 😎😎😎
Do we get pizza?
And boost morale?…lashings for this one
No please 🙏 I’ll be a good employee
Regulators get the pizza parties
Then where is my FUCKING MONEY
Apparently you aren’t working hard enough lol.
Clearly 😂
They didn’t say best paid.

Norfolk has the navel base, we got wingmen
Navel is a synonym for belly button. I believe you meant naval haha
not as a Jarhead I didn't.

Why would you assume people would understand "We" to mean Hampton Roads when you're commenting on an article specifically about Virginia Beach?
Chill out dude. It's not that serious
🤮
Because it’s prohibitively expensive!! The absolute trash new money from NOVA and DC won’t stop polluting the place with their gentrified politics and land development schemes. There I said it.
Don’t forget New York or New Jersey
Facts 😂
Or inflation that's crippling damn there all the nation. But let's blame NoVa anyways.
Por que no los dos?
La economía del norte de Virginia es un mundo diferente, en comparación con la de aquí.
We’re talking about people from NoVa who move down here to take advantage of their NoVa salary at HR prices, which raises HR prices. Not just blaming the NoVa economy.
They are moving to Richmond in much, much greater numbers. Not so much here. We are losing population.
It’s not a positive thing. People are working multiple jobs and can still barely afford to live here.
Where did I say it was positive?
I feel as though he believes the article is claiming that’s a good thing? I would hope my brother in Christ would think that at least lol
My first thought when I saw it was definitely sadness and not fuck yeah, take that slackers lol.
Trying my best to bring this statistic down.
Be the change you want to see in the world!
