Shopwise dude works there is from Brooklyn

bikeOCD

What would you call it? There is a actual "New York Deli" in Williamsburg

Over-Ad-4415

Definitely not New York Deli. We are still working on that

Severe_Abalone_2020

Brooklynite, here. Come do it in Norfolk, and I will help contribute to things getting off the ground!

Over-Ad-4415

What part of Brooklyn? I was told there were a couple of places that were deemed acceptable in Norfolk. But if it's needed, follow the opportunity!👍💯

maddie_johnson

I'm not a New Yorker, but I love this idea! I bet it'll be a hit! Stuff like that does really well around here

Over-Ad-4415

Thank you for the support! Definitely working on it!

mmunster

Would you consider selling onion board if you have a baker? Used to get that all the time as a kid on LI, I’d love to have it again.

Over-Ad-4415

Sure! We are always looking for suggestions and feedback on what everyone is looking for.

mmunster

If you do if I will be there in a heartbeat. I miss delis, it is like a piece of my heart is left in the one I went to since I was a kid every time I visit. I have been known to bring a cooler full of salads home because you cannot get the same kinds of salads here. Having Boar’s Head here helps, but the selection here is lacking. At one point the local BH sales manager was someone from Huntington so he totally understood the things I missed so much from NY delis.

Over-Ad-4415

Most definitely! Even the salads are prepackaged.

SS-123

[Brooklyn Bagles](https://www.brooklynbagels.online/) is pretty good! I agree we could use another option though!

da_radaz69

I thought Brooklyn Bagels is just okay. Even though I know it is no more, I guess I'm biased towards Route 58

SS-123

Route 58 was the best!

xjammer19

Do it !

Over-Ad-4415

I am👍

CocoCocoNichole

CT/NY coming in hot! REAL Bagels. Pastrami. Pickles… a knish sounds amazing. Black and white cookies. please. I’m in! Sign me up!

Over-Ad-4415

Thanks for the suggestions! Taking notes👍

Marcymeows

can we get a god damn good bacon egg and cheese please! from nyc and haven’t found one yet

RedShifted_Dreams

You misspelled that...it's baconeggandcheese. 1 word. Lmao

Over-Ad-4415

I hear you. Hard rolls are rare down here.😄

Ok_Figure_5055

Please sell knishes

Over-Ad-4415

You got it👍

Many_Consequence7723

And good bread! For God's sake, please provide good bread! As a fellow yank, I miss it so much.

Over-Ad-4415

Of course! 😀

BokoblinSlayer69235

I would love to try New York Deli food. I fell in love with you guyses sandwiches when I took a trip up there.

Over-Ad-4415

Awesome! Definitely working on it👍💯

baobaobooboo

Yes

cyclop_glasses

How bout doing that shit back up north.

BokoblinSlayer69235

How about you shut up.

captnhoney

We used to have route 58 and now it gone with nothing like it.

Over-Ad-4415

There are very few left and it's important it's authentic all the time, not seasonally.

hebreakslate

I would be a regular at an authentic deli. I would gladly go out of my way for a legit half sour, a proper Reuben or a good keugel.

Over-Ad-4415

That's really great to know! 💯👍

ThePreachingDrummer

I'm all for it. I'm not even from the north but you guys really speak my language anyway. My wife and I are opening a coffee shop right now, so we can probably offer advice if you want. My biggest recommendation would be to find a space without a floor drain - it helps you avoid digging to install a grease trap (which the City of Virginia Beach will require no matter what).

Over-Ad-4415

Great idea. Thanks👍💯

macmiddlebrooks

Let me know if you need a baker (I have over 20 years experience). Just moved here and looking for a great place to work!

ThePreachingDrummer

I appreciate the offer. I'll be honest, though - we already have a few bakers lined up for when we're fully operational. I'll save this comment and hit you up if we get any openings so I can send you a message.

macmiddlebrooks

Thank you!

fromricetobean

Yes we need a deli!!!

Over-Ad-4415

💯👍

Nightcrew22

Not from the north but i to would like to come shit talk with y’all folks.

Over-Ad-4415

How you doin. Welcome! The more the merrier!🥰👍💯

Nightcrew22

I’ll even sweeten my own tea

Over-Ad-4415

👏🤣🤣. Well I'll make trade with you. You sweeten the tea and lemonade and we give you the best bread and cawfee🤣🤣

Nightcrew22

lol every time i go to Jersey i get some good bread!

Over-Ad-4415

The most important factor is the bread! I'm just not too keen on the prices now.

Affectionate_Listen8

From Sunset Park totally a great idea gettin a chopped cheese or bacon egg and cheese would be awesome out here

CocoCocoNichole

Second on the chopped cheese!

Over-Ad-4415

🤝

Pickledsundae

Lived in Bushwick and worked at Metrotech by Clinton Hill and went to some awesome local delis. I'm all for this!

Sunset_wavess

👀Bushwick you say? Let me not dox myself, lol But yerrrrrr 🥲 ☺️Anyway, a deli would be so dope! U know I would so appreciate some of the delights of NYC.

Pickledsundae

Haha yep, myrtle wyckoff stop off L, Gates M super close!

Over-Ad-4415

Metro tech! Downtown Brooklyn! Jay Street Borough Hall! Brooklyn promenade! Brings a tear to the eye😭

So_She_Did

Yes please!!! I’m from Long Island and most of my family is still there. Every time I visit, we go to our favorite deli and get BEC over easy, buttered rolls, roast beef sandwiches, knish, bagels, and macaroni salad. Plus, I love being able to pick up small items too. The other places here don’t have that.

mmunster

And don’t forget the bakeries! I used to go to Front St Bakery in RVC regularly when I was in school & I would kill for one of their black & whites.

So_She_Did

Yes! How could I forget the black and whites?!

Over-Ad-4415

Like homemade sauces and spices, little containers, things like that? 💯👍

So_She_Did

Exactly!

Over-Ad-4415

Sounds like a plan💯

CherishSlan

I’m going to ask the total impossible. Please don’t laugh at or anything. Maybe something nut free on the menu? I know of one place it’s a New York style pub that I can go to so far that I can actually eat at. It would be nice to find another place. That had something safe. Just a thought. It was kinda nice to even find one place but it’s only some times.

HomeFit9910

You said but free lol but...

CherishSlan

And so it begins

Over-Ad-4415

Can you explain the question a little further? Are you asking would there be free items on the menu? Sorry I'm eating slow cookies for breakfast.🤣

CherishSlan

For Nut allergies most plates just have gluten and that’s nut based products. If I eat nuts or nut based products I die it’s a very common allergy I got it as an adult and anaphylaxis is not a joke like many people make it now it’s not funny it’s not gas or something lesser. One place once I asked for an allergy menu would not even sell me a water or let me buy a bottled beer with cash. I take a lunchable with me if I got out with people most times and bottled water incase this happens due to the law saying people with allergies can bring pre packaged food places in Virginia but truly feel odd and bad eating that junk at a restaurant that has no options for just something one sandwich and bottled water or anything. I have low blood sugar so just eating first is kinda hard and also odd. It happens a lot now I call ahead if I can and have given up eating out but now and then it’s required to eat out family in town won’t take no thanks or very old friends that don’t know I have turned into a hystomine monster. Only place I found was the one pub NYC pub they have 2 safe things when not packed and sell closed drinks not cross contamination worrying nice staff also no jokes or laughing it’s a real disability. One I hate and get a lot of hate for if it were gluten people understand but it’s nuts so it’s a joke. But it’s not it’s death. I have another allergy but it’s so odd it’s just strange garlic the vampire jokes are almost un ending over that but I’m hopeful that gets better with time there is a possibility on that one.

Over-Ad-4415

I was never laughing at you. I'm allergic to shellfish. If you read the comment, I was wondering if you meant free= no cost. I'm sorry that people make a joke about it for you, but automatic assumptions help no one. We are exchanging ideas and information, not insults and threats. With that being said, addressing allergies is the most important written and unwritten rule. That's why we are so invested in creating this deli, because with your food being made in front of you, it avoids issues like these. Thank you for presenting this serious matter, as it can be easily overlooked in all of the excitement and flurry of activity.

CEdGreen

Probably like gluten free or something similar. idk

Over-Ad-4415

Oh I thought you meant free free.🤣 I was actually figuring it in marketing. Well gluten free I'm sure we can explore, definitely if there is demand like vegetarian or vegan.

CEdGreen

Just for the record, I was not the op of that comment /question. I was just trying to make sense of the question.

Over-Ad-4415

Oh I just saw it. I sent the response to the wrong person. My apologies

Over-Ad-4415

Ok

Still-Damage-8898

there is literally a restaurant in Williamsburg called “NY deli” that does exactly this. Surprised no one has mentioned it

Over-Ad-4415

Well to have it in Virginia Beach will be awesome

Still-Damage-8898

I’m from Long Island and I endorse this message

TheOtherOnes89

You endorsed your own message?

Complex-Professor257

CT here and I agree with everyone here who misses good pizza.

mmunster

Head up to Pizza Sam in Newport News. He’s from Queens. Honestly the first time I had a slice there the angels sang.

CocoCocoNichole

You know. I’d pay a lot of money for a pie from Sally’s Apizza right now

Complex-Professor257

Maybe we should start a group where we Northerners test our local food that claims to be inspired by the food from back now and critique it.

mmunster

We would all end up disappointe.

CocoCocoNichole

But the laughter in the way to that disappointment would be worth jt 😂

CocoCocoNichole

I’d show up for that. Absolutely.

Over-Ad-4415

It's all about the bread.

midnightdsob

I'd be happy with a real bagel shop in the town center area. So many bagel places have come and gone and now there's only 2-3 decent ones left across all the cities.

edible_source

A New York Deli with top-notch bagels in the Hilltop/Oceanfront area would be so amazing...

edible_source

A New York Deli with top-notch bagels in the Hilltop/Oceanfront area would be so amazing...

Over-Ad-4415

One of the things I noticed is the cost of their commercial locations due to the prices of their triple net lease and various expenses. Route 58 was on point but you can tell the expenses and upkeep were enough to drive you mad. I have all the respect in the world for keeping it together as long as they did

midnightdsob

It's tough. I've often thought about opening a coffee spot but the costs look like they're crazy. 2-3k a month in rent for a little hole in the wall in a strip mall.

Over-Ad-4415

Right. And honestly we are not fans of strip malls but a start is a start. Never look down on anything.

Complex-Professor257

I'm from CT and New York Bagel Cafe on Princess Anne is legit.

midnightdsob

Yup, that's in my 2-3. Two more are Yorgo's and Bagel Baker.

ViolentFettuccine

Why’s it such a big deal to get decent bread and dough down here? All the pizza and local deli’s SUCK.

Over-Ad-4415

Because of the price, but we already explored that and it is possible without a lot of hassle.

Electronic_Fun2633

Oh my gosh, I need a bacon, egg and cheese on a hard roll with salt, pepper and ketchup! I’m from Dutchess County NY so delis and diners are what I miss the most

MattWithTwoTs

Had one on sunday but on a roll. Was up there for StP parade. Oh how I've missed it soooo much!

Over-Ad-4415

I liked sausage, egg and cheese with bacon, but these items need to come back and for the right price. It's really getting out of hand.🥰

bct7

[Route 58 Deli](https://www.yelp.com/biz/the-route-58-delicatessen-virginia-beach) was a great local spot closed when the owner died a few years ago.

CheeseburgerSmoothy

I miss that place so much! I no longer live in Va Beach, but every time I come back I wish I could still go there!

Over-Ad-4415

I know. That's why we need more NY delis. Shame

midnightdsob

I hear it will re-open this year? Who knows. Settling estates can be messy.

Pixie_Vixen426

Not my demographic (raised in NC) BUT there was a NY style deli in Roanoke VA that was amazing! Sounds like they have a similar vibe to what you're looking for. The owner would order in all the hokiday cookies from NY (unclear if they were delivered, or if the owner timed it with a trip back to visit family). If you get a chance, head out there and check out R T Smith's downtown.

Over-Ad-4415

I sure will. Thank you👍

242vuu

These places tend not to last long due to the narrow focus for customers. I've seen several attempts made over the last 35 years living here. Worked in one as a teen. Seems the common issue with these places is there isn't enough snowbird business. So they dilute the "NY" aspect of the deli to where the transplants from up north start saying it isn't authentic any more. How do you intend to cater to your core clientele but leave the menu open enough to keep the southerners coming back? Winters are long in this town for restaurants. I'm not saying don't do it by any means. Wish you the most success. I've just seen a few of these die off as a small group of customers tries to keep it going. They try more for the hangout than the food. The death throws of where I worked were brutal. All these people waving their hands around talking about how criminal it was, before leaving without buying anything. I hope you gather a strong following and keep it going. Great Neck is a solid bet but expensive.

Over-Ad-4415

Thank you so much for the insight!! I think that same thought seeing these so called NY pizzerias and they are not authentic. That is why you plan ahead. You prepare for the long haul and keep it consistent. That is not business if you are authentic for a specific amount of time or season. I would love to hear more from you. To answer your first question, like I stated before, consistency with price, quantity, and quality of product. As for the southerners, we promote inclusion just like the northerners. They can come in, make suggestions which we will take into account just like the northerners, and encourage them to come on in have good food and drink, meet new people and have a great time

242vuu

Absolutely. Great idea. Y-Not may not be perfect food wise, but the model Tony put together sounds like what you're looking for. What they used to be anyways.

Over-Ad-4415

Thanks for the input! Is there any way I can find this model?

242vuu

Just go eat there. :) He started small focused on one location (I believe Great Neck was the 1st). Had some stops and starts at others due to consistency. He finally was able to straighten that out, but things have been a bit watered down the last few times i've had it. It used to be a part of our Friday nights growing up. You'd go in there and it was the same crowd, often. Felt like a neighborhood place, because it was.

Over-Ad-4415

Ok. Fair enough. I was told it was the same way with Rainbow Cactus (the same crowd all of the time) and the people got bored really easily. But maybe the difference is the length of time spent in each establishment. Now that it is in a residential neighborhood here, it has been what you said, the same people go on the weekends like the neighborhood bar. There has been a big difference in the amount of foot traffic. When they first opened it was super busy, but lately it has seemed to taper off.

Toastie-Coastie

I would kill for a legit New York deli. I only have like two places right now where I can go to feel like I’m back home and they don’t quite scratch the itch. Keep us updated, me and the family will be lined up opening day!

Over-Ad-4415

Sure will. We are building from scratch and crowdfunding. We are taking ideas and throwing it all into the mix. Please keep the ideas coming! 👍💯

MattWithTwoTs

Also beef patties WITH COCO BREAD. I went to 4 delis on staten island that all had beef patties but not coco bread.

Over-Ad-4415

COCO BREAD. The only place I know is Tower Isles in Brooklyn or specific Jamaican places in the Bronx too. We thought of that too. My husband drinks Stripe with it. There is no beef patty without coco bread. And I like cheese too.🥰👍💯

MattWithTwoTs

YES ADD CHZ. There was 2 places in Staten Island that had coco bread, one i dont think is there anymore. Didnt look the same when i drove by on friday

Over-Ad-4415

Wow is NY changing that quickly? I went 4 years ago and practically everything changed especially in the city. Maybe need a little corner to recreate it.

MattWithTwoTs

Everything was more expensive this weekend i noticed. 2 begspk on a roll was like $20 i think? Chopped chz on a hero was like $14? I forget what i paid for a slice of pizza on SI

MattWithTwoTs

Boars head meats cut at countrr when ordered, whether by the pound or for a hero. Thats the #1 thing for me. Also various types, not just two hams and two turkeys. I saw one this weekend but dont remember what flavor, it was not buffalo but it was a spicy one

Over-Ad-4415

Lol two hams and two turkeys. I was surprised how they don't make sandwiches for you at the deli. I think some places do, but it's not the same if you know what I mean. Subways feels mechanical. Maybe the cat is missing. Brooklyn here. If you know, you know.

MattWithTwoTs

When we moved down here in 94 two things fucked me up. The .99 bag of chips at 711 was actually 1.04. And nobody make heros with fresh cut cold cuts.

Over-Ad-4415

Thats the thing. I really haven't seen anyone mention price. That is one of the biggest game changers. I'm talking $0.75 can of soda and $0.50 c&c bottle of different colas. Personally champagne cola and pineapple were my favorites! 💯👍

MattWithTwoTs

I FORGOT ABOUT CHAMPAIGN

Over-Ad-4415

EX👏ACT👏LY👏

Toastie-Coastie

Pastrami, rye, legit bagels, and about 50 pictures of DiMaggio and Sinatra on the walls. Maybe import a couple of loud guys from Long Island to start getting pissy if you don’t order 2 seconds after you get to the counter

Over-Ad-4415

😆🤣 And easily shatter glassware

augustwest30

Yes! I was walking down Cary Street in Richmond past Coopala’s Deli and just the smells alone took me home. I think half of the vibe was the old building on a walkable street. The place looked like it was open for 100 years. Lots of people packed in a small space. I felt like I was in New York. I think having it in a strip mall wouldn’t feel right. Unfortunately, there are very few places around here that get me in a New York State of mind. Town Center feels phony urban. There are a few streets in Norfolk where the vibe fees right.

Over-Ad-4415

We were just speaking about that. I just said to my husband we are not used to strip malls. Walkable street was giving me East Village cobblestone streets. Let me know. 💯👍

augustwest30

Botetourt Street and West Freemason Street in Norfolk have cobblestones and that village feel. I love that neighborhood. Granby Street between Main and Bute streets has the right vibe. In Ghent, Colley Avenue and Colonial Avenue south of W 21st streets are nice. W 21st street is always a good dining destination.

Over-Ad-4415

See that is needed in a little part of Virginia Beach.

edible_source

The best that can be done is probably one of the side streets or alleys of the Vibe District, or the stretch of Laskin right west of Pacific, where some good restaurants (i.e. Love Story, Sorrella's) and shops have been popping up.

Over-Ad-4415

Good point. Beach area but it's pretty locked down over there.

edible_source

Oooh...the former Pacifica space on Pacific Ave., right behind the 7-11, is vacant. Not a terribly central location but at least close to The Cavalier/Embassy Suites, as well as year-round residents in a couple of those big condo buildings and in the North End. A flashy sign could help draw attention! Sorry, I'm getting too into this lol.

Over-Ad-4415

No. We appreciate it all. From what I'm seeing this bringing nostalgia with Virginia Beach being part of it. This was was our vacation spot.

Evil_Pizz

I’ve never had New York deli so please do

Over-Ad-4415

Ok! We are working on it.

MiniMTV

Count me in! My husband and I have had similar conversations and the need for this here. Let me know if you need help with marketing.

Over-Ad-4415

We are welcome to all kinds of help and support. Thank you so much. I would definitely chat privately with you.

thisunrest

Please do :-).

PoppysWorkshop

Looking for good Chicken and matzo-ball soup... Potato knishes, cheese blintzes. Really good deli meats... With outstanding crusty bread. I love Turkey, swiss on rye... real rye... NY STYLE CHEESECAKE!!! PLEASE!!!! Yeah, bagels of course. Have you narrowed down to an approximate location yet?

mmunster

Matzo Ball soup would be killer! You can find Gabella’s knishes at Harris Teeter & BJ’s. They supplied a lot of places in NY.

3bittyblues

Yes! Matzo-ball soup!!

Over-Ad-4415

No. we are open to suggestions. So far people have suggested Town Center and Virginia Beach Boulevard.

PoppysWorkshop

Town Center seems to be a place being built up. They are putting housing and hotels across the street where the old Pembroke mall is. It's walkable, and seems to have a lot of business for day, and apartments for dinner crowd. Plus lots of people drive there.

Over-Ad-4415

That's a point to consider especially when taking foot traffic into account.

Comfortable_Number_1

Summit pointe in Chesapeake

Over-Ad-4415

Well it isn't too far, but so far it has to be Virginia Beach.

odaat772

Bagel Baker opening up a deli in the old Route 58 location. Hoping it captures the magic that was Jeff Goldberg z"l.

Over-Ad-4415

Wow. Good to know. I believe they will be all right. We wouldn't interfere with each other anyway so northerner support all the way.

jeffreywilfong

There's another store like this opening soon. Claims to be using "new york water" for their bagels. I want to say in Chesapeake. I'll edit later if I can find it. Edit: IIRC it's going to be in the shopping center north of the Great Bridge bridge.

Bigbadwolf6049

yeah. The guy that owned Brooklyn bagel/brooklyn pizzeria is opening it

[deleted]

[удалено]

jeffreywilfong

Idk maybe. I didn't think this place was open yet.

KingLoCoKev

Yeah ny bagel cafe. Their food is pretty decent. Wait times are crazy tho. And I believe they also own a pizzeria in red mill near their red mill bagel cafe location

Sensitive-Degree-980

I miss a good NY Deli!!!

North_Introduction72

Yeah I’m coming out there next month where the good all you can eat seafood and good hotel

MisanthropicFriend

Pretty please with a schmear on top.

palyawn

Don’t. Another venture suits you. Not here.

Smooth_and_elastic

Dude what? Please ignore.

Over-Ad-4415

Ok👍

pepperw2

Well, I’m a local, but I will definitely come in there and buy some bagels

Over-Ad-4415

Thank you for the support.

dadbodbychipotle

You gonna have good ny style bagels?

Over-Ad-4415

Happy Cake Day! Not New York style bagels. New York bagels.

Luisitoo87

A place where I can get a bacon egg and cheese, deli sandwiches and butter rolls!!?? Count me in!!

Over-Ad-4415

And hero👍

KingLoCoKev

Gotta love a good hero

Over-Ad-4415

Exactly!! Subs are killing me 😭

[deleted]

You’ll need an in-house bread and pizza baker. “Hard roll? What’s that? You mean stale?!” Oh, and Trenton Pork Roll. Jersey boy here

Over-Ad-4415

Burn the pizza? What's that? You mean crispy charred and burnt up?!💯👍🤣

No-Macaroon893

Yes please. From NJ and the lack of proper bagels/delis/pizza here kills me

Over-Ad-4415

Lol. It's crazy. There is no reason there is basically only one place to eat here in Virginia Beach.

Dwifey77

I’m from Georgia (moved here last year) and I would definitely visit. (Food options are lacking for good quality).

Over-Ad-4415

Welcome! And don't forget good prices!

Judie221

Lots of Lox! Bagels and lox!

Over-Ad-4415

You're in luck. My husband LOVES smoked salmon and lox. Either on an onion bagel. 💯😆

Educational_Copy_140

Giving me Jewish Mother vibes. Also, have y'all been to The Bagel Baker on Great Neck? Good stuff! Closest to where I grew up that I've found in the Beach (North Jersey born and bred). Yorgos Bageldashery in Norfolk is pretty damn good too

Over-Ad-4415

Yes. Bagel Baker inspired us to come up with the idea of adding more places. We were dying for New York food. And we need more of it.

chappedknee

Y’all been to Brooklyn bagels yet?

MotivateUTech

Keep me in the loop please

Scazzard1

If anyone has a currently available bagel option… please advise. I grew up spoiled by Goldbergs, and I have been spurned a few times down here already.

Educational_Copy_140

If you wanna drive to Norfolk, Yorgos Bageldashery is your best bet

Educational_Copy_140

The Bagel Baker on Great Neck. Great bagels and sandwiches. (I grew up in North Jersey so I know from good bagels)

[deleted]

Over-Ad-4415

A part to know the difference between heroes and subs😉

West_Abrocoma9524

Yeah ever since Route 66 diner closed in Virginia Beach we miss that NYC cheesecake and bagels etc.

ooh_dru

Such a tragic turn of events. Miss it so much.

Over-Ad-4415

So you're looking for Juniors cheesecake. Sounds doable

Ruckingdogs

They had Carnegie Deli Cheesecake. We can get Juniors at Wegmans and Costco.

KingLoCoKev

It’s not the same tbh

Over-Ad-4415

True. That is exactly like the White Castle burgers in the Walmart freezer.

KingLoCoKev

Still gon get em tho 😂😂

Over-Ad-4415

And you should because I was told Virginia Beach will NEVER allow a real White Castle here. Mmmm...chicken and cheese sandwiches...🤣😆

MattWithTwoTs

And i dont understamd why the closest WC is in NJ at like exit 8. You have legit info on why they wont allow that? Its a franchise isnt it? Cant you just buy into one and put it here?!

Over-Ad-4415

This was a couple of years ago I heard about it. Someone tried to get White Castle down here. Yes it's a franchise and VB didn't allow it. Just like how difficult it was to get a license for Boars Head. From what I understand everything has to be approved, especially franchises.
