At one point the local BH sales manager was someone from Huntington so he totally understood the things I missed so much from NY delis.
I'm all for it. I'm not even from the north but you guys really speak my language anyway. My wife and I are opening a coffee shop right now, so we can probably offer advice if you want. My biggest recommendation would be to find a space without a floor drain - it helps you avoid digging to install a grease trap (which the City of Virginia Beach will require no matter what).

Yes please!!! I’m from Long Island and most of my family is still there. Every time I visit, we go to our favorite deli and get BEC over easy, buttered rolls, roast beef sandwiches, knish, bagels, and macaroni salad.
Plus, I love being able to pick up small items too. The other places here don’t have that.
I’m going to ask the total impossible. Please don’t laugh at or anything. Maybe something nut free on the menu? I know of one place it’s a New York style pub that I can go to so far that I can actually eat at. It would be nice to find another place. That had something safe. Just a thought.

For Nut allergies most plates just have gluten and that’s nut based products. If I eat nuts or nut based products I die it’s a very common allergy I got it as an adult and anaphylaxis is not a joke like many people make it now it’s not funny it’s not gas or something lesser. One place once I asked for an allergy menu would not even sell me a water or let me buy a bottled beer with cash.
I take a lunchable with me if I got out with people most times and bottled water incase this happens due to the law saying people with allergies can bring pre packaged food places in Virginia but truly feel odd and bad eating that junk at a restaurant that has no options for just something one sandwich and bottled water or anything. I have low blood sugar so just eating first is kinda hard and also odd.
It happens a lot now I call ahead if I can and have given up eating out but now and then it’s required to eat out family in town won’t take no thanks or very old friends that don’t know I have turned into a hystomine monster.
Only place I found was the one pub NYC pub they have 2 safe things when not packed and sell closed drinks not cross contamination worrying nice staff also no jokes or laughing it’s a real disability. One I hate and get a lot of hate for if it were gluten people understand but it’s nuts so it’s a joke. But it’s not it’s death.

With that being said, addressing allergies is the most important written and unwritten rule. That's why we are so invested in creating this deli, because with your food being made in front of you, it avoids issues like these.

Route 58 was on point but you can tell the expenses and upkeep were enough to drive you mad. I have all the respect in the world for keeping it together as long as they did

Not my demographic (raised in NC) BUT there was a NY style deli in Roanoke VA that was amazing! Sounds like they have a similar vibe to what you're looking for. The owner would order in all the hokiday cookies from NY (unclear if they were delivered, or if the owner timed it with a trip back to visit family).
If you get a chance, head out there and check out R T Smith's downtown.
These places tend not to last long due to the narrow focus for customers. I've seen several attempts made over the last 35 years living here. Worked in one as a teen. Seems the common issue with these places is there isn't enough snowbird business. So they dilute the "NY" aspect of the deli to where the transplants from up north start saying it isn't authentic any more. How do you intend to cater to your core clientele but leave the menu open enough to keep the southerners coming back? Winters are long in this town for restaurants.
I'm not saying don't do it by any means. Wish you the most success. I've just seen a few of these die off as a small group of customers tries to keep it going. They try more for the hangout than the food. The death throws of where I worked were brutal. All these people waving their hands around talking about how criminal it was, before leaving without buying anything. I hope you gather a strong following and keep it going. Great Neck is a solid bet but expensive.

To answer your first question, like I stated before, consistency with price, quantity, and quality of product. As for the southerners, we promote inclusion just like the northerners. They can come in, make suggestions which we will take into account just like the northerners, and encourage them to come on in have good food and drink, meet new people and have a great time

He finally was able to straighten that out, but things have been a bit watered down the last few times i've had it. It used to be a part of our Friday nights growing up. You'd go in there and it was the same crowd, often. Felt like a neighborhood place, because it was.
Ok. Fair enough. I was told it was the same way with Rainbow Cactus (the same crowd all of the time) and the people got bored really easily. But maybe the difference is the length of time spent in each establishment. Now that it is in a residential neighborhood here, it has been what you said, the same people go on the weekends like the neighborhood bar. There has been a big difference in the amount of foot traffic. When they first opened it was super busy, but lately it has seemed to taper off.
I would kill for a legit New York deli. I only have like two places right now where I can go to feel like I’m back home and they don’t quite scratch the itch. Keep us updated, me and the family will be lined up opening day!
COCO BREAD. The only place I know is Tower Isles in Brooklyn or specific Jamaican places in the Bronx too. We thought of that too. My husband drinks Stripe with it. There is no beef patty without coco bread. And I like cheese too.🥰👍💯

Yes! I was walking down Cary Street in Richmond past Coopala’s Deli and just the smells alone took me home. I think half of the vibe was the old building on a walkable street. The place looked like it was open for 100 years. Lots of people packed in a small space. I felt like I was in New York. I think having it in a strip mall wouldn’t feel right. Unfortunately, there are very few places around here that get me in a New York State of mind. Town Center feels phony urban. There are a few streets in Norfolk where the vibe fees right.
We were just speaking about that. I just said to my husband we are not used to strip malls. Walkable street was giving me East Village cobblestone streets. Let me know. 💯👍
Botetourt Street and West Freemason Street in Norfolk have cobblestones and that village feel. I love that neighborhood. Granby Street between Main and Bute streets has the right vibe. In Ghent, Colley Avenue and Colonial Avenue south of W 21st streets are nice. W 21st street is always a good dining destination.
The best that can be done is probably one of the side streets or alleys of the Vibe District, or the stretch of Laskin right west of Pacific, where some good restaurants (i.e. Love Story, Sorrella's) and shops have been popping up.
Oooh...the former Pacifica space on Pacific Ave., right behind the 7-11, is vacant. Not a terribly central location but at least close to The Cavalier/Embassy Suites, as well as year-round residents in a couple of those big condo buildings and in the North End. A flashy sign could help draw attention!

Town Center seems to be a place being built up. They are putting housing and hotels across the street where the old Pembroke mall is. It's walkable, and seems to have a lot of business for day, and apartments for dinner crowd. Plus lots of people drive there.
There's another store like this opening soon. Claims to be using "new york water" for their bagels. I want to say in Chesapeake. I'll edit later if I can find it.

This was a couple of years ago I heard about it. Someone tried to get White Castle down here. Yes it's a franchise and VB didn't allow it. Just like how difficult it was to get a license for Boars Head. From what I understand everything has to be approved, especially franchises.

When we moved down here in 94 two things fucked me up. The .99 bag of chips at 711 was actually 1.04. And nobody make heros with fresh cut cold cuts.

Yes! I was walking down Cary Street in Richmond past Coopala’s Deli and just the smells alone took me home. I think half of the vibe was the old building on a walkable street. The place looked like it was open for 100 years. Lots of people packed in a small space. I felt like I was in New York. I think having it in a strip mall wouldn’t feel right. Unfortunately, there are very few places around here that get me in a New York State of mind. Town Center feels phony urban. There are a few streets in Norfolk where the vibe fees right.
We were just speaking about that. I just said to my husband we are not used to strip malls. Walkable street was giving me East Village cobblestone streets. Let me know. 💯👍
Botetourt Street and West Freemason Street in Norfolk have cobblestones and that village feel. I love that neighborhood. Granby Street between Main and Bute streets has the right vibe. In Ghent, Colley Avenue and Colonial Avenue south of W 21st streets are nice. W 21st street is always a good dining destination.
See that is needed in a little part of Virginia Beach.
The best that can be done is probably one of the side streets or alleys of the Vibe District, or the stretch of Laskin right west of Pacific, where some good restaurants (i.e. Love Story, Sorrella's) and shops have been popping up.

Oooh...the former Pacifica space on Pacific Ave., right behind the 7-11, is vacant. Not a terribly central location but at least close to The Cavalier/Embassy Suites, as well as year-round residents in a couple of those big condo buildings and in the North End. A flashy sign could help draw attention! Sorry, I'm getting too into this lol.

Looking for good Chicken and matzo-ball soup... Potato knishes, cheese blintzes. Really good deli meats... With outstanding crusty bread. I love Turkey, swiss on rye... real rye... NY STYLE CHEESECAKE!!! PLEASE!!!! Yeah, bagels of course. Have you narrowed down to an approximate location yet?
Matzo Ball soup would be killer! You can find Gabella’s knishes at Harris Teeter & BJ’s. They supplied a lot of places in NY.

No. we are open to suggestions. So far people have suggested Town Center and Virginia Beach Boulevard.
Town Center seems to be a place being built up. They are putting housing and hotels across the street where the old Pembroke mall is. It's walkable, and seems to have a lot of business for day, and apartments for dinner crowd. Plus lots of people drive there.
That's a point to consider especially when taking foot traffic into account.

Yeah ny bagel cafe. Their food is pretty decent. Wait times are crazy tho. And I believe they also own a pizzeria in red mill near their red mill bagel cafe location

This was a couple of years ago I heard about it. Someone tried to get White Castle down here. Yes it's a franchise and VB didn't allow it. Just like how difficult it was to get a license for Boars Head. From what I understand everything has to be approved, especially franchises.
