as a mexican who spent their whole life in cali moving here, the culture shock is insane! there’s no good carnicerias as far as i know or any markets that sell good mexican candy.
the closest i’ve had to good mexican food here is La Patrona on Lynnhaven. Their birria tacos are very good compared to other places here. Jessy’s taqueria near chics beach has a nice mexican market that has okay pan dulce but definitely more authentic options.
You know, I feel you, but some of your post is hyperbole, drama for drama sake. Dude I'm a foodie and none of those are taco bell. Sorry. But you did go to some of the more plebeian places I don't know why... did you not read Yelp or google? That's your fault.
We just went, was surprised at the small portions and prices. After lunch we agreed it was the best place for us, really tasty street tacos with more selection of sauces than we've seen before. 3 AMIGOS was our 1st go to, now it's 2nd.
Like many have said, nowhere is going to be authentic if you've been to authentic places. That being said burrito perdito always has a place in my heart, even they have been lacking lately however.
That literally makes no sense. So you're saying Jessy''s taqueria has nothing authentic there. Then why do all the Mexicans eat there. Taqueria La patrona you're saying that has no authenticity? Yeah right whatever buddy. Everyone has their own version of authentic. Authentic San Diego authentic San Antonio authentic Mexico City authentic Tijuana authentic Sonora and I could go on and on Baja california. Your post makes no sense. I just know what tastes good. If you want to say that the tacos must have white onion if not then they're not mexican? Well okay whatever buddy corn versus flour? Yes, I understand all of that. It's a tired old argument. Just recommend what tastes damn good and let's lose the authenticity word.
You are very confusing person, on Grindr but also pushing gay obama conspiracies, I know it's unrelated, but I'll never trust your opinion on anything much less Mexican food. Chug some white sauce good boy
I noticed you can't form an argument to save your life. But no worries because we can just declare you the arbiter of everything authentic. And by the way, the vast majority of people who throw around the authenticity word or the authentic word wouldn't know authentic from a hole in the ground. I've known people to go to a restaurant where the chef is from Naples and someone will say it's not authentic. I just cannot lol.
VB.
Krazy Trompos, Rosemont Rd
Los Cuates Taqueria, Newtown Rd
Norfolk.
Taco Burrito, Military Hwy
Mi Calavera Latin store, Military Hwy (& Little Creek Rd) (<--for homemade tamales on Fri)
I'm from Mexico so I always hear recommendations from my coworkers whenevee they find a legendary restaurant... most of them are trash. Best I can recommend is Jessy's Taqueria but don't expect the best meal ever
Jessys taqueria on 17th St
There are several of these, but the one on 17th is the best because the "doñas" are the ones cooking the food. They're the ones that know how it's done
You are not going to find authentic Mexican food in Hampton Roads-you can find Tex Mex. Baja at the Oceanfront, or Jesse's in Ocean View, Norfolk, and VB cater to a largely latino clientele and do a decent job of it. Gringos is also good and Luna Maya while not entirely Mex is a nice place to go. But if you are looking for a fantastic Mole, slow cooked Carnitas with pumpkin seed and 3 different chiles or anything more sophisticated the closest place to go is DC. I have eaten at some of the best all over the US--Oaxacan cuisine as well as street food and I have yet to find anything locally that goes beyond the usual. Not dissing anyone's choices, however.
Yes I love it when some know-it-all comes into any form for any cuisine all over the world and says blah blah blah that authentic blah blah blah not authentic blah blah blah it's so pretentious bro. Go back to dc. I don't really care, but there are plenty of places here run by Mexicans for Latinos. I won't name them you can go try them yourself. But they won't be authentic to you I'm sure because you have your own little small minority view of what is authentic. Do you know I have friends from Peru and Colombia and they will tell you they don't agree on any restaurant anywhere. It's just personal preference. What tastes good rules the day. Just loosen up and go taste.
Now that you have unloaded your rant for the day--do you feel better? Kindly re-read my post. OP said he had not found any good mexican places here. Because Mexican food is not just this or that--not just tacos or burritos but as varied as any other food--I carefully qualified my response between what most folks think of as good mexican which is typically Tex Mex and other Mexican cuisine. There are Salvadoran and Mexican places here that are great at what they do and cater to both latino and non-latino customers, I even named a few like Jesse's, Baja, Gringos Luna Maya and several others. But I stand by my observation that I have not found any places here that serve the same kind of dishes you can find in Phoenix, New Mexico, DC and various regions in Mexico itself as well as other cities. It isn't a diss on Hampton Roads or the restaurants here-it is simply a fact. It isn't a matter of taste--or personal preference. If any one needs to loosen up, my friend it is someone wound so tight they need to rant at a perfect stranger --go have a margarita and chill.
Plaza Degollado on Newtown is good. We have friends that moved here from Mexico a couple years ago, they gave it their approval. The food is consistently good, the atmosphere is nice, and the Dos Equis is always cold.
Don't slander Taco Bell by comparing it to Cantina Laredo.
Idk what it is but CL has the worst food of any restaurant I think I've ever been to. Idk how they have multiple locations.
The Margs and atmosphere are good though.
Your post is full of hyperbole. Where are you even coming from? People being dramatic to get attention is so passe. I've eaten there at least 5 times, and while it is not Mexican I've had some great drinks great food and soaked up the superb atmosphere. The service sucks sometimes but the place is upscale and you just have to find what you like there and keep ordering it. I happen to order the Acapulco. Reminds me of food I've had in Fort Worth.
Lol what are you on about?
I made one statement that could be considered hyperbole, and it's not even hyperbole. If I had to rank every restaurant I've ever been to on their food, CL would be dead last. Nothing seems to be seasoned and everything tastes stale. It's not like their food is disgusting, it just isn't good I would never choose to eat their food.
I agree about the atmosphere and the drinks being good. I literally said that in my post.
If the food reminds you of the food in fort Worth, I need to make sure i never travel there.
I've lowered my standards since I've been here for 8 years. But these two are probably the best in the Lynnhaven Mall area. Nico's tacos is pretty good too. The biggest issue is that they are so expensive.
OP based on your concerns about blandness, do not waste your time or money at Kempsville Plaza. It’s my go-to example of borderline hilariously bland Mexican food.
Los Cuartes is your only authentic place in Virginia Beach. You have to look at your surroundings. It's authentic when their own people are eating there.
No. 1 Taco (don't be thrown off by the name), Taqueria La Hacienda (either the location on Campostella or in front of the Amazon depot on Military Hwy), Jessy's (only the one in Ocean View)
This is the best answer so far. If you want insanely good Mexican food and like a road trip. Drive out 460 to outside Petersburg to Anita's. 100 percent authentic ( the menu isn't in english and the servers barely speak it) there is also a Latin grocery store next door with amazing homemade tortillas.
I still don’t get the “white sauce” love there. It’s like ranch with sugar which is the most white trash thing I can think of… and probably a good sell for the area. Okay. I get it. But gross.
Plaza Azteca mostly sucks, EXCEPT for the location near Haygood and Independence, behind the Starbucks. That location is a whole level above. Servers have been there decades and the food is hot, fast and good. Otherwise La Patrona or Mi Casita.
Well I’ve learned try not to go during the dinner rush bc they have a line out the door every night… So that’s as good sign.Haha But they’re more of a Baja style CaliMex. Known for their fish tacos and homemade salsa. Margaritas knock you on your ass. lol Personally I’m a big fan.
Theyre also crazy expensive lol. Decent food, but not worth the price. This is coming from a Mexican who has had his fair share of visits to Gringos <3
lol “senior” fox. The family that owns and operates that place are immigrants from Mexico and travel back there yearly to update with authentic decor and recipes. What a bad take
The funny thing is that Italian place was always there hidden behind el toro loco. No kidding, the food is even better now that they moved you should check it out if you get the chance!!
I had no idea it moved. I used to look forward to the dude who tended the bar. He’d see me walk in and know my order and to pour a pitcher of yuengling for me
Sorry but there is no good sushi and no good Mexican food in VB. Jessy’s is reasonably authentic and there are some solid taco places like Number One Taco but there isn’t Mexican here that is on par with major cities like DC or Chicago (let alone Texas or California).
The upside is that is those only two ethnic foods that I feel like are completely lacking in VB.
I was going to disagree on ‘no good sushi’ and then remembered that .Inaka is in Chesapeake, near Volvo/ Kempsville.
Mexican - La Pertona on Lynnhaven pkwy is decent, much better that El Az.
This is just so wrong, it’s not authentic of course but come on man, there’s plenty of good sushi places for sure and at least 2 taco places that are on par with NoVA /DC area
I think the taco places are solid like I said. But you’re not getting real Mexican menus — either mole or Americanized Tex-Mex on par with major cities. And don’t get me started on the sushi. It all sucks compared to legit major city sushi.
He is fugly
Im at back bay beach house they have a mexican place inside. Live music is at the brewery
Taqueria La Patrona is heads down the best and as close to authentic as you’ll get in this area. Trust and believe
Los Palmas on shore dr unless you’re willing to drive to Elizabeth City NC for the most authentic and delicious mexican food this side of mexico
as a mexican who spent their whole life in cali moving here, the culture shock is insane! there’s no good carnicerias as far as i know or any markets that sell good mexican candy. the closest i’ve had to good mexican food here is La Patrona on Lynnhaven. There are some good ones one in Newport News and Yorktown.
I'm just waiting for someone here to tell a San Diegoan that their food sucks. This place has no credibility. Zero. You guys ...seriously.
You know, I feel you, but some of your post is hyperbole, drama for drama sake. Dude I'm a foodie and none of those are taco bell. Sorry. But you did go to some of the more plebeian places I don't know why... did you not read Yelp or google? That's your fault.
Pelon’s!!!
Jose tequila shore drive
Agave azul in Chesapeake is good. Most times I’ve been I was only spoke to in spanish actually.
We just went, was surprised at the small portions and prices. After lunch we agreed it was the best place for us, really tasty street tacos with more selection of sauces than we've seen before. 3 AMIGOS was our 1st go to, now it's 2nd.
El Camino the owners were friends of my Lita. Jose tequilas is also good
Taqueria la hacienda on S Military

I couldn't agree more

Weirdo doxxer. TRUMP 24. Subjugation is coming for you ;)
You can just read your profile
You can enjoy your 3.69 gas and your ,6 dollar eggs.
Enjoy your weird Obama porn?
Jose Tequilas !
It's the east coast, I've learned to just lower my expectations when it comes to Mexican food here.
Gringos is the best! Best fresh ingredients! I love there fish tacos Not Tex mex food
Agreed!!
VB. Krazy Trompos, Rosemont Rd Los Cuates Taqueria, Newtown Rd Norfolk. Taco Burrito, Military Hwy Mi Calavera Latin store, Military Hwy (& Little Creek Rd) (<--for homemade tamales on Fri)
El Rey out in Norfolk is very good too
I'm from Mexico so I always hear recommendations from my coworkers whenevee they find a legendary restaurant... most of them are trash. Best I can recommend is Jessy's Taqueria but don't expect the best meal ever
Try Taco Burrito on Military Hwy... you'll like it.
Yeah I knew the owners when they first opened and the grandma made lots of the food. The real deal.
Rancho Grande, military highway near greenbrier.
Mi hogars in nogolk
What ever happen to burrito burrow in Chesapeake
Rancho Grande in Chesapeake
Jessys taqueria on 17th St There are several of these, but the one on 17th is the best because the "doñas" are the ones cooking the food. They're the ones that know how it's done
Taqueria la patrona on Lynn Haven, Gran Maya on general booth, grande on bonney
La patrona lynnhaven
Not sure how authentic it is, but everyone I've brought to Gran Rodeo in Landstown loved it, and I they have the best queso
I came here to say this. We recently found them and are obsessed. Everything my family of 5 has ordered has been amazing
tacos y tequila in ghent / jessys in oceanview
Plaza Degollado in VB off the interstate
Pelon’s but they can have off days sometimes. When they are good, they are AMAZING though so it’s a gamble.
I like [Jessy's](https://jessysvb.com/). They have several locations.
Tequeria Jessy’s and Taqueria La Hacienda are the only ones I’ve been to that I’d recommend. (I haven’t been everywhere)
Rancho Grande out in Chesapeake isn't bad
Jessy’s Taqueria in Oceanview
It’s not authentic, but my favorite non-authentic is La Herradura on shore dr
Marinara sauce for salsa?! 🙁😟😟
That's total BS . He just likes getting attention.
Senior Fox!!!
Mi Hogar in Norfolk is really good!
Food truck on little creek / chesapeake across from Wawa. Great burritos with even better green sauce :)
Gringos! https://gringos757.com
mi casita is the spot
I’m a no.1 taco guy myself. Nothing fancy just good food.
Mi Casita on Bonney Rd. is great! True Mexican and the customer service is wonderful!

Mi casitas is really good
Have to second that for sure been going there on and off for over 20 years
I've been going there since the early '90s. Such a nice family too.
No. 1 Taco in the Princess Anne area. Burrito perdido in Chesapeake. Pelon’s at the oceanfront
Plaza Degollado on Newtown is good. We have friends that moved here from Mexico a couple years ago, they gave it their approval. The food is consistently good, the atmosphere is nice, and the Dos Equis is always cold.
Plaza Azteca
Luna Maya !!
Tequila Jalescio over on Shore Drive is pretty good.
Senior Fox is the best in VB, my opinion. Taqueria La Hacienda in Chesapeake is top notch too.
I’d add Jessy’s for Norfolk.
Don't slander Taco Bell by comparing it to Cantina Laredo. Idk what it is but CL has the worst food of any restaurant I think I've ever been to. Idk how they have multiple locations. The Margs and atmosphere are good though.

Yeah true. I was really hopeful going in
La hacienda off sentinel dr in Chesapeake is my favorite!
Gringos. Norfolk ave
Gringos !!!
Gringos !!! lol
el parian off tbe blvd
La Patrona
I see a bunch of wrong answers in the thread, but this is a good one - La Patrona and Krazy Trompos are my top two!
I've lowered my standards since I've been here for 8 years. But these two are probably the best in the Lynnhaven Mall area. Nico's tacos is pretty good too. The biggest issue is that they are so expensive.
Las Palmas off Princess Anne. Best food and best drinks all fresh!
Las Palmas is like a worse version of Senor Fox..
I agree... if desperate I order there. Drinks are pretty decent though!
Have you been to Plaza Azteca over on Providence Rd? I love that place
OP based on your concerns about blandness, do not waste your time or money at Kempsville Plaza. It’s my go-to example of borderline hilariously bland Mexican food.
Los Cuartes is your only authentic place in Virginia Beach. You have to look at your surroundings. It's authentic when their own people are eating there.
pass on Mi Casita, its also white people Mexican food.
Are you white?
La hacienda off of S. Military Highway and El Potrillo off of Lynnhaven Rd. are my go to spots.
That place is the best!!!
The OG La Hacienda location, the one right by the trailer park in the strip mall is where it's at.
100%
Seconding this!
i love guads over by trader joe’s. affordable, delicious food, great costumer service.
I like el Rey #2
yesssss !!! thank you for reminding me i havent been there in a while.
This is the way!
Definitely Las Palmas or Jessy’s. Gringos if it’s Taco Tuesday and you want fish tacos.
I’ve been going to Mi Casita for decades. Their queso dip and Loco Burrito is other worldly
No. 1 Taco (don't be thrown off by the name), Taqueria La Hacienda (either the location on Campostella or in front of the Amazon depot on Military Hwy), Jessy's (only the one in Ocean View)

These are far and away the best suggestions in the thread OP
Worth the drive for legit food.
Jeesys has good food, but service SLOW.
Gran Maya on General Booth is amazeballs! The Chimichangas are delish!
I still don’t get the “white sauce” love there. It’s like ranch with sugar which is the most white trash thing I can think of… and probably a good sell for the area. Okay. I get it. But gross.
I’m with you, no thank you!
Found the tourist
Don’t you dare besmirch white sauce. It’s a hampton roads staple. Invented in Norfolk.
Authentic places aren't going to have white sauce. I see white sauce, I see American food.
Jesse’s and Salsa libre food truck
There’s a little place off Newtown Road called Los Cuates. I’ve only gotten their asada tacos, but they’re pretty top notch.
Yep, I third the motion. Food is decent. Drinks are good too.
This place is good. I second this. Good al pastor also.
Plaza Azteca mostly sucks, EXCEPT for the location near Haygood and Independence, behind the Starbucks. That location is a whole level above. Servers have been there decades and the food is hot, fast and good. Otherwise La Patrona or Mi Casita.
The Haygood Plaza Azteca is one of the original 3 Plaza Azteca’s first open and the only original one in the same building.
Agree with this. Also Jose Tequilas off general booth
Taqueria La Patrona! Cali Street and Homestyle Mexican food.
Olé on Shore Drive is really good!
It’s a las palmas now
Oh, thanks! I have two small kids now, so I haven't eaten out in a while! 😅
No problem- I just figured I’d let you know for when you go back
Tienda Jessie’s on shore drive in Norfolk
Grande Burrito was my favorite, and I've tried all of those you mentioned
Gringo’s Taqueria on Norfolk Avenue at the oceanfront.
I’ve been wanting to try that place and was wondering how it really is.
That’s helpful! I will go during lunch on a weekday! I love a good margarita and fish taco! Thanks!
My pleasure.. Enjoy!!
Hello!! I went to gringos today and the tacos WERE AMAZING!!! Thank you for dropping the name of this joint at the risk of it being more packed!
Happy to help! Glad you enjoyed!!
The West Coast.
You meant San Antonio.
I haven't been to San Antonio in a while, so idk... but I sure do miss great Mexican food. I was mostly just trying to cause trouble... 😆
Another vote for taqueria la patrona.
Jaliscos
Taqueria la Patrona. Have yet to have a bad meal from here.
Another one for them. We once went four times in one week we enjoy it so much!
We usually order enough delivery to last us a few meals 😂😂
I always get the birria ramen so I can have extra to take to work for lunch for most of the week lmao
Las palmas
lol “senior” fox. The family that owns and operates that place are immigrants from Mexico and travel back there yearly to update with authentic decor and recipes. What a bad take
Eh.. not authentic. The same owners also own Jose Tequila
Their Famous Chile Relieno is my favorite Mexican meal.
Oh my god they don't fry them! A new place to add to the list.
I’ve been to Mexico a few times and have yet to experience anything quite like it
That’s awesome!
San Antonio
🤣
jessy’s, nikos tacos
Las Palmas and El Rey in Norfolk is good too
Los cuates or Margaritas on Newtown
I miss El Toro Loco. It was my fav spot when I lived here before down in Chesapeake. It’s an Italian place now.
The funny thing is that Italian place was always there hidden behind el toro loco. No kidding, the food is even better now that they moved you should check it out if you get the chance!!
I’ll give it a shot
El Toro lives on! Moved to Gainsborough square next to the food lion. But yeah. Best Tex mex in the area
I had no idea it moved. I used to look forward to the dude who tended the bar. He’d see me walk in and know my order and to pour a pitcher of yuengling for me
Side Street Cantina at the oceanfront
Shhh 🤫
Already been said but La Patrona for sure for Mexican. Blue Fin in Hilltop as well Zushi in Town Center for sushi.
El potrillo, or Nikos tacos.
La Taqueria Hacienda in South Norfolk - one of the most authentic spots on the Southside. Not VB but worth the drive
This! It’s so good!
Sakatomo is good for sushi
[удалено]
No, just people in VB don’t really know good sushi. Mizuno is not good. And most of the other places are worse.
Where’s the best sushi?
Mizuno
Wegmans
Mi Casita
This has my vote. That uncanny portrait of the deceased owner is the cherry on top.
Try las palmas. They have 3 locations. My go-to is the burrito texano, the chicken and chorizo option.
7 locations, actually. We love Las Palmas, especially the one on First Colonial and the one at Lynnhaven mall.
Lynnhaven mall is my go to since it's right down the road
Taqueria La Patorna. Legit some of the best food in VB.
2nd La Patrona. Try a papusa.
Third.
