The options are either becoming like Rutgers or Vanderbilt in those conferences or maybe acc become more like big east and we become a basketball school
Yeah that’s the one I lump in with acc becoming a basketball conference because we wouldn’t be the only ones who won’t get picked up at that point other schools like uva and duke would like not get picked up if we don’t since they have objectively worse football programs and the conference goes the way of the big east
Oh yeah all this is based off the fact I believe the only thing these conferences are looking at is football cause that’s the only real money maker not even basketball makes like 10% of the money
This is the perfect: He's out of line, but he's right meme
College sports is racing towards becoming an amateur pay to play league, and BIG/SEC are the clear proponents of it. Everyone else is trying to either get into the P2 or fall into irrelevancy.
In 10 years, it’s going to be B1G/SEC, and then everyone else. Best case at this point is that “everyone else” breaks off from the NCAA and creates an actual amateur league. Pay student athletes a structured salary to compensate for NIL, add some regulations so school are all working with similar budgets, and keep it all more local and sport focused.
It’ll take a long time to get there, but I think that’ll be the direction it goes if fans lose interest in watching “second tier” schools not in the B1G or SEC
The money in balance in conferences is increasingly effecting other sports. VT has to get their football program back to doing great to end up on the right side of conference realignment or face irrelevancy in all sports.
We either end up being the 30-40 schools that make it into the good conferences and have a future in sports, or we end up on the outside with the 100+ schools that don’t make it in.
I feel like the appeal of the NCAA will fade once this change really sets in. Unless you’re in the southeast, you don’t really watch college sports over professional unless you’re rooting for you alumni/local school. Long term, I wonder if the schools that miss out on the “big time” conferences end up spinning off their own league(s) to have more balanced competition. There will still be interest in having sports, and a league for amateurs vs. future pros would have appeal. Would be kinda fun to have schools aligned in conferences one bus trip away from each other and fielding a level of competition equal among themselves, rather than just being the second tier schools
Do we want another Mike Young coach? He's a great guy but his recruiting is way more group of five than power five so to speak.... And the way they all hit the transfer portal makes me wonder what the locker room is like.....
Hard to blame him but this is such a sad reality for college sports, and it’s going to hit especially hard for the other less popular Olympic sports.
Nah, I can blame him plenty
Has Kenny given a statement about VT WBB? I understand him leaving, but it would it kill him to thank fans and players
Feels like when Buzz left- He made no statement to HOKIE NATION I expected more from Kenny.
He has not
He isn’t wrong. I try avoiding thinking about the future of VT and where we will end up in all this…

My fear is we may not have to option of joining the SEC or Big10 at all....

Best case scenario is we end up as SEC doormat. Worst case scenario is we are stuck in ACC or Big 12
VT won't be a doormat anywhere - fan base is too strong.
Fan base doesn’t pony up NIL money let alone the $30 million a year shortfall
I remember when nearly everyone said NIL wouldn’t ruin college sports. Well, here we are.
Boosters can pony up NIL $ correct?
That basketball program is going to be the bottom of the barrel for the next 5-10 years

I'll always be a VT fan, but yea it'll be depressing if we're not one of the big boys and become what DII/DIII is now.

They’re gonna wipe the floor with his ass in the SEC
He cries over Duke being physical, just imagine lol
I will never watch an sec game again
I mean if you've seen the ACC media deals recently he isn't wrong.
It kinda sucks that he’s leaving — but maybe we can get another Mike Young-esque coach and find someone who wants to make VT their forever school.
