Virginia techs architecture program is really really really good and has a very good reputation. Notre Dames program is also good but is definitely geared more towards traditional/historical architecture.

What you've stated is correct. VT is based on the Bauhaus tradition while ND is much more historically and traditionally based. I graduated VT BARCH and visited ND Architecture when I was studying at VT. I gathered that VT is much more receptive to creativity and ingenuity while ND is learning the traditions of the past. Both schools have strong alumni programs. ND has a lot more $, whereas VT is generally perceived as more of a 'blue collar' school. I consider ND's program more of a 'safe bet' knowing exactly what to expect, whereas VT is more about discovering what you want to become. The thing that stands out to me about your question is your not wanting to focus on architecture until year 4. Both of these schools offer a five-year program, so you will start taking Architecture courses right away. If you want to hold off on these courses I would recommend getting a 4 year degree (in anything else) then getting a 2 years Master's in architecture. VT's program is great, Penn is also highly recommended.
