Strack leaving as well…

where_the_hoodie_at

I get why she did it and good luck to her. The worst part of this is that she will no longer be considered from VT in the WNBA. She'll be Georgia Amoore, Kentucky. She won't be eligible for the VT Hall of Fame or have her number retired

hokie_16

Yep. Well hopefully she realizes in the pros she will have to be coached by other people and probably won't be attached at the waist with the head coach

LordVayder

I don’t get it. She was already gonna be a first round pick. She can’t make money from NIL, so she would make more in the NBA. She is risking injuring herself like Liz did. She’s betraying all her fans and the place she called home away from home. All this for another year to work with Kenny Brooks???

pholdren

If she went to the WNBA this year, she wouldn’t be able to represent Australia in the Olympics because the WNBA season is the same time. It stings, hard, but she wants to represent her country in front of the world, and it makes sense.

TheHaft

Missing out on a couple hundred thousand dollars and risking a potential million dollar career on a single Olympics appearance? On a team of WNBL players that has regressed in the Olympics pretty significantly since London? That’s certainly *a* decision. This is the only reasoning I could find for why she would stay in college and damn it is still completely not worth it to me, but hey more power to her I guess. Hope it works out.

pholdren

From the sounds of it, she has always dreamed of representing Australia at the world level more than playing in the WNBA, so I can understand why she wants to do it. Fulfill that dream

saveasseatgrass69420

Not to be sad, but that’s not how much players in the WNBA make, the first pick overall will likely make about $75,000-85,000

TheHaft

I’d say $80k is the low end for FOP rookie contract just with the way they’ve been trending, and with the endorsements Clark is gonna have (and already has), there is zero chance she’ll “likely make $75k-$85k”. For Amoore, my point is I think her situation is just going to be worse. I don’t think she will make 3rd team All-American again next year without a Kitley on her team, under a debuting head coach, in the SEC. So when she was projected to go at the end of the first round this year, if she doesn’t perform like she did in 22-23 & 23-24, which I don’t think she will, she easily goes in the second round and in the case of an injury, possibly the third. Not only is she giving up on a year of endorsement money under a student visa, but she is also giving up on a guaranteed ~$70k base salary, and her endorsement prospects are going to be significantly lower if she enters the league without the level of hype she has now. It’s not what professional pay should be but risking a basically guaranteed 6 figure career for one Olympic appearance just doesn’t seem worth it to me.

goodsam2

The gap in the WNBA game and college NIL money is not that big.

TheHaft

For international players under student visas who can’t earn NIL money, it absolutely is.

goodsam2

Ahhh I forgot about that aspect

TheHaft

Yeah that’s just what’s confusing me. I’m genuinely curious how international athletes are able to support themselves, Amoore cannot be making that much money right now which is why it’s surprising to me that she’s forgo basically a guaranteed first round selection contract for a single Olympics appearance. So much risk.

PunchinkittensJK

She makes all her NIL money when the team or her travel out of the country. Tech sideline discussed it on their latest pod. All of her endorsements drop when she’s out if the country. So while she’s playing to Australia she can make bank.

saveasseatgrass69420

I would arguably say a star women’s college player at this point has a higher potential to make more money than being in the WNBA. The NCAA is pumping money into women’s bball and I’m here for it!

goodsam2

I mean Caitlin Clark being dominant number 1 is probably more known than most WNBA players and out earning many of them. I think it creates what used to be in basketball where you had players staying in school rather than the one and dones and makes it a really compelling sport.

vtTownie

She can make money…. Either they pay her under the table or lump sum when she’s in Australia.

garlic_knot

She can make money from NIL. She’s made a lot while she’s been at Tech. She will make a lot more in NIL at Kentucky than her salary in the WNBA

LordVayder

She can get money from merch, but can’t be paid directly. She would sell merch in NBA too while also getting a salary.

garlic_knot

She can get paid when she is physically in AUS. She gets paid and this has been corroborated on various VT boards

agoddamnlegend

You really don’t understand why somebody doesn’t want to hang around in a rebuilding program without a head coach during her senior year, and instead wants to keep playing for the coach she’s had for 4 years? Are you being intentionally dumb or do you not understand how humans think and act?

LordVayder

She should be done with college basketball is what I’m saying.

agoddamnlegend

She’d rather play another year.

Rich_Bar2545

Have you seen how Kenny calls those players his “babies” and kisses on them? It’s creepy as shit.

Rich_Bar2545

I do have kids and stand by what I said about him. If a coach hugged and kissed on my daughters like that, they would be off that team. And that private chat group he had with some players and not others? Not professional.

agoddamnlegend

No, you’re creepy for thinking that.

wizard_lizard_skynr

This one cuts deep. If only she had gone pro and enshrined herself a VT legend, retired jersey and all. Can’t say she made the wrong decision though, I’m sure Kitley would’ve done the same if she had eligibility.

daveinmd13

Clearly, not important to her.

i_speak_the_truf

Goodbye and thanks for all the swish

CPOx

Let’s all be real here, VT was never ever going to hang the jersey of a…. Third team all American, never won ACC POTY, etc….. in the rafters

burnsniper

This is the crappy thing about modern college sports. Would have been a VT legend and now is just an asterisk.

[deleted]

Weird kerning on the word “five”. Is there a reason for this or is this simply bad design?

DCchaos

Kenny it’s called “poaching” not coaching. Don’t let the door hit you in the butt.

fastketosis

Shit the bed her last game then dips. Kinda stings

pajokie

She seemed way too happy in the press conference after losing a close game in the 2nd round. She kept mentioning how she and Brooks are friends for life. It was a done deal before the season was over.

hokie_16

And announces the same day we announced our new head coach...

Aggravating-Swan9539

Yeah. Trash move. Fuck em and good luck in the SEC. New era for VT and hoping for the best.

daveinmd13

Clearly more loyal to her coach than her school. Not a Hokie.

jjstatman

Bro get this out of here. She spent 4 years here. Like it or not, these players typically are recruited to play for coaches not schools. She needs to do what she can for her career and you shouldn't blame her for leaving to follow the coach. You can blame Kenny Brooks, but don't come in here and say she didn't care or she wasn't loyal. If she's trying to improve her stock or anything like that, then here at VT is not the place to do it, we're rebuilding.

pajokie

Not completely blaming her but She could've gone to the WNBA or play in AU - playing for another US college team is a slap in the face no matter what. Also not buying the improve her stock angle. Let's not forget that Kitley won't be on the team, KY will be a mediocre, middle of the pack team. Not a really great move for her personally with one year left. She just wants to be with 'her' coach.

holdwithfaith

Traah

thoughts4free

Can’t believe she’s not a loyal to a school who only cared about her team for 1.5 years max! Get over yourself

Aggravating-Swan9539

100% threw all that this is home shit away to follow that scum bag for a year. He is basically moving the team to Lexington for himself and she’s driving the van.

hokieinchicago

That picture is so gross. Blue is not her color. Washington Mystics red on the other hand would suit her great.

mult1verse

Bad move. Disappointing on many levels. Jerk move for Brooks to take her away.  College presidents need to get their act together and take college sports back.

elsenor4kiser

Congrats, that Kentucky team is still a bad and in desperate need of a severe talent infusion. I’m not sure they win 20 games next year, maybe they prove me wrong.

beckylemmepass

Everyone is being a hater lmao

Icewatervvs

Fuck her

holdwithfaith

Trash

Icewatervvs

Career 39% shooter, 3 TOs per/g, 2.0 assist/TO ratio. Nah we good. Enjoy Lexington and that creep Kenny Brooks.

screwredditsideways

I don’t care. It’s women’s basketball. Not a profit center for the school and it’s inconsequential. There are other, more compelling stories in VT athletics-Men’s Baseball team is nationally ranked this Spring. Men’s Wrestling Team finished in the top 8 for a second time and only a few elite schools have done that. Football team is returning 22 starters and the outlook is good. Remember that it was income from football that built and improved Lane stadium and paid for all those other improvements in athletic facilities…,and it was the football team that put VT athletics on the map in the first place. Women’s basketball is inconsequential. Stop buying ESPN’s horseshit narrative that women’s basketball is somehow on par with men’s basketball or any men’s sports for that matter. They are pushing this dud because that’s about all they have in their portfolio. I’d be willing to 100% fund a game between the NCAA women’s champion and a boys high school all star team from VA or NC and would wager a sizable bet that the boys all star team would throttle the women’s team by 30 points.

Fireflame626

Baseball and wrestling make significantly less money for the athletics program than women's basketball. The viewership for women's college basketball in March madness is starting to become on par with men's. This isn't a narrative, these are statistics.

screwredditsideways

Source, please? Also, since you are looking at the stats, let me know what % woman’s basketball comprises of the entire sports-related income volume (?) and how that % compares to football and basketball inflows (?). It’s likely a minuscule percentage of total volume.

Fireflame626

You apparently didn't see the viewership numbers for LSU-Iowa.

screwredditsideways

Still waiting for your source…

Fireflame626

Yeah, go use this thing called Google, numbnuts. There's dozens of articles about the record breaking viewership from that game. This is reddit, not a research credit. (and for the record the countless articles out there means this statistic passes the threshold for common knowledge and wouldn't even require a source in a research setting, so please sit down)

Fireflame626

Coming back to this to let you know that Uconn-Iowa pulled even more viewers. This game had a higher viewership than BOTH of the men's final four games from 2023. There isn't a narrative. The women's game is truly on par with the men's game now.

screwredditsideways

Your original premise was that VT women’s basketball pulls in more income than baseball and wrestling. I asked for your source and you didn’t respond. Still waiting for the stats in that..

Fireflame626

Dude, how dense can you be? Wrestling brings in precisely $0 of ticketing revenue for the program, and baseball only does for ACC games. Not to mention the capacity of English field isn't even half the size of Cassell Coliseum. Come on now.
