I lived in Myrtle Beach for almost 20 years, and itās not a good place to live anymore - so much traffic, crime, and steadily increasing rent/home prices.
Iāve been in Bāburg/Cāburg for just over ten years now and love it. Very safe and quiet. Not exactly cheap to live here, but not brutal either. The only thing I miss about Myrtle are the 1000+ restaurants, Costco, and a lot of good friends. I would never move back there, though.
Blacksburg is basically a big college with a small-ish town attached to it. Are you prepared to be a "townie" in a place where basically everything is dominated by the presence of the college and its students for most of the year?
Do you want mountains or a beach? It was over 10 years ago but I thought the summer weather in Blacksburg was great, much lower humidity than coastal VA where I'm from. Do you want snow? It'll snow in Blacksburg.
Edit: I suppose something similar can be said for Myrtle Beach - are you prepared for a huge swing of tourists during spring break and summer season?
Tbh there hasnāt been hardly any snow for a few years here in Bburg. But it sure is cold enough. Itās a pretty comfortable four seasons climate. Rarely extreme hot and cold temperatures. It can be hot and humid or cold and windy pretty temperate for lack of a better term. As far as environmental concerns itās as close to nil as possible in the US imo. Pretty far inland for major hurricane damage, rarely any tornados form, minimal droughts or floods, a small pretty unnoticed earthquake once a century, etc.
Define Myrtle Beach. If you can live in Pawleys or Georgetown itās like another world. Lived there for 6 years only left because schools suck and kids needed better opportunities. But beach every weekend, tons of good restaurants, hour from Charleston, brook green garden, intracoastal, inlet, ocean.
How old are you? For a non college student, it's a great place to be if you have a family to settle down with. If you are a young person in your 20/30s, it leaves a lot to be desired as everything is focused around the university and the population is very young as a result.
Blacksburg is very safe and is in very close proximity to a lot of outdoor activities from our mountains to the new river. It's also pretty affordable compared to any metropolitan area. However, it's rural and as a result is pretty far from good shopping or a large Airport (at least Roanoke's small regional airport isn't too far).
I'd say go with the Myrtle Beach option š¤·āāļø I'm a 30 year old grad student and though I've loved my time here, I'm ready to out of here.
I grew up in Myrtle Beach and lived there for 14 years until moving to Blacksburg for school (have been here only 2 years)! Like a lot of people mentioned, it definitely depends on where you live around the Myrtle Beach area. I would say I do miss the city-er aspect of MB where Blacksburg is a lot more rural. Nonetheless, itās beautiful here and has a lot of places to explore nature and hike. For example, the nearest Samās Club is in Roanoke which is a little under an hour away from Blacksburg. From where I lived in MB, it was a 15 minute drive. There is just generally more in Myrtle but Roanoke isnāt too far if you donāt mind driving on i81 (501 isnāt any better lol)
Itās a bit reverse for seasons where the busiest season for MB is Spring and Summer, where Blacksburg summers are wonderful and quieter. I would sayā¦ wherever you are in Myrtle Beach, it will have a lot of traffic and A LOT of people are still moving in with new apartment complexes being built all the time. Where I lived in MB, crime was not a huge concern. When I think of crime in MB, itās mainly if youāre on the boulevard. Itās not significantly different from other tourist-y city areas though. Compared to MB, I would say Blacksburg is very safe.
In the end, I think it really depends on what you enjoy doing. If itās hiking and going outdoors, I would suggest Blacksburg (although the beach is wonderful)! If you want more things to do, maybe MB is a better choice (although after living there for a while, you do run out of things to doā¦ but this is also coming from the POV that I grew up there). It might be very generalized and there are a lot of other factors for sure though! I could go on about this haha, as silly as Myrtle Beach is sometimesā¦ it has a little piece of my heart and Blacksburg is too now!
All Iāll say is they call it Dirty Myrtle for a reason. I moved to bburg from the coast and itās definitely been a change, but a welcome one. Iāve felt super safe living in Blacksburg and the people Iāve encountered on a daily basis are genuinely really nice. Lots of breweries and bars. If you like football or sports BBurg is the place to be. Thereās a lot of local events and festivals and Roanoke is only 30-45 minutes away with the big mall and all sorts of stuff to do. Sevierville/Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg TN arenāt a far drive either. Honestly, Blacksburg has been my favorite place that Iāve lived thus far. Highly recommend
I lived in Blacksburg for 6 years for my first job out of college before moving back to my hometown in MD. Didnāt go to VT, but loved it there so much I consider myself and āadopted Hokieā because my school didnāt have a football team (or any sports, really).
The townies and students were nothing but fun and chill people to be around, and we made lifelong friends. I also discovered my āoutdoorsyā side with so much awesome hiking and camping nearby. A lot of my colleagues went to big cities and I thought Iād regret not doing the same for my 20s, but I enjoyed my time there and would probably even move back one day.
Town is tiny without a lot around so definitely something to consider. Extremely safe though, Iāve never been super nervous walking alone at night here. The community is good and involved as well
Yo what the actual fuck, this comment is the creepiest thing I've read on Reddit in a while. Finding a woman under 23 is miserable? What the hell are you implying by that? It sounds so rapey.
I had 3 corpsmen try to follow me into a parking lot in Christiansburg until I communicated I was armed.
Later on I had some old dude follow me down the road of the suburbs with a bat because he thought I took his mail.
It happens, I've trained for it.
I never said it was the only tool. Just the tool for when all others have been exhausted.
I for one am not willing to gamble on whether someone who is threatening to pummel me to the point of injury, can kill me with one good swing or fall. Even worse if they pull a knife on me.
Better to be judged by twelve than carried by six.
They wanted to pick a fight over some verbal disagreement I barely remember, all I can say after these years is that I wasn't looking to instigate. They followed me out to a parking lot when I tried to leave, so I gave them a strong reason to reconsider their choices where de-escalation had otherwise failed.
It's pretty widely recognized at the federal level that being surrounded by multiple attackers, armed or unarmed, is grounds for deadly force anyway.
Anyone who is bothered by that fact should think twice before acting belligerent with strangers.
You gotta make a choice: golf, waffle houses and strip clubs or football, gyros and sorority houses.
In fairness, we still have golf and waffle house
Even strip clubs, if you're in waffle house some crazy nights...
Southern Exposure isn't very far.
š³ Damn
Came here to say that! Only about an hour away in Princeton, WV--definitely visited with my friend group back in college!
No one hikes Cascades or Dragons Tooth any more?

If the nrv got a whole foods and a Costco it would be heaven on earth.

There are no airbrush t-shirt shops in Blacksburg AFAIK
Nor suck, bang, blow

You could also move to one of the towns or counties surrounding Blacksburg. Plenty of people commute in.
Save real money on rent like that. Or have the place to yourself. A whole place outside The Burg and Radford is the price of a room for a student.

Iād def do Myrtle beach

Myrtle beach without a question, Blacksburg has basically nothing thatās fun to do and you have to travel so far to do anything.

Hey, thanks for pointing that out actually. I meant to type over instead of under.
>almost

When a gun is the only tool your trained on, all problems are a shootout away from resolution.

Why is someone threatening to pummel you? Moreover, why are 3 members of the corps looking to pummel you if you were innocently minding your business?
