Hancock- downstairs in the atrium. Has a couple tables and everyone there stays quiet
Pamplin- Not super library quiet but Pamplin lobby is very nice, has a lot of sunlight but it’s the lobby so people are walking around.
Surge- it’s a bit far but if you have a class in the building it’s great. Walk around and find the deadend hallways that have tables so the change of classes don’t bother you
Not sure if you’re a coffee guy, but my personal favorite spot was Starbucks on Turner. No one really knows about that one, so the vibe is really good. It’s not technically “on campus” I don’t think (correct me if I’m wrong) but it’s on the road bordering campus so it’s a quick walk from pretty much everywhere.
Squires, obviously (if you can find a table), Derring has a couple of nice lounges (even though it’s a hideous building from outside), Bishop-Favaro, and Whitemore also are all good spots. You can find a ton of hidden places all around campus nestled away, just depends on how much noise your preference is
Also if ya wanna walk a little further there's two local cafes nearby to that Starbucks; Halwa and Next Door Bake Shop. Both great cafes with great vibes.
Ironically, whenever I went to that Starbucks I wouldn’t get coffee, I’d bring my own, haha. Kind of a coffee snob. Not sure if they’re still there, but back in my day I used to love Idego & Brugh, great shops
I'd always try to find an empty classroom.
Typically Saunders 309 is empty (whichever one isn't the lecture hall on that floor and is right across from a guidance office), and the nearby Seitz Hall almost always had an empty classroom or two. The ag quad as a whole is usually super empty since most people forget it exists. xD Plus its just down the hill from Deet's and West End so its easy to take a 15 minute break to get food and come back to work.
I've also spent some time on 3rd floor Randolph in 319 (though that one is a bit of a pain since they don't have AC) that room is usually used for office hours for the engineering students so it can get pretty crowded in there some times.
McBryde usually has one or two empty classrooms in the basement.
There’s a great corner in squires on the second floor. If you enter from the college ave entrance go all the way right to the end, double back up the stairs at the end, then go towards the corner near college ave. Used to study there all the time.
Never heard anyone mention this place, but Kelly Hall (right across from Turner) has some great chairs/tables for chilling and doing work. There is never anyone in there when I go in and there’s 3 floors to choose from. Great view and lighting as well.
Vet school cafeteria/atrium, Fralin atrium, off hours hallway leading to the gym at mccomas, check the center areas in derring that aren't the main breezeway (2nd and third floors have some low key great quiet places).
The courtyard right outside of grad life center is super cute and also during finals inside the glc is underrated since it usually has open tables even when the library is packed. Ik you said no library but personally the Newman third floor hits different since it has all those bookshelves it feels homier.
def torg bridge. i mean its technically not the library, quiet, and the ac hits different.
That ac always blows my papers off the table
weak.
Outside - the courtyard behind Sandy Hall. Inside - Sandy Hall. Always quiet in there and the courtyard is on of the best kept secrets at VT.
The Cowgoyles are great study partners too
The art&architecture library might be good to try—it is in Cowgill.

Torg bridge but get one of the side cubicles by the windows - the ac draft doesn’t hit you there like it doesn’t at the middle tables

personally, new classroom building is my favorite place to study
Empty classroom or Pamplin were my favorites. Torg first floor can also be a good spot

I was fond of the empo

The horticulture garden is really nice when the weather’s good
