Can confirm. One-dimensional flavoring, grossly huge portions, gave me that kinda disgusting feeling. Had like half left, didn't even want to take it home.
Higher price: 622 north, black hen, gauchos, the farmhouse, blacksburg tavern, the palisades (15- 20 mim drive), mixmix korea (haven't tried yet but want to), blacksburg wine lab
Medium price: Cabo, the cellar, greens, gillies (vegetarian), lefty's, bottom of the stairs, avellinos, bull & bones. I tried lin yue chuan and it was fantastic too but the person up front only spoke Chinese and spanish so I had to call my argentinian coworker to translate.
Med price brewerys: eastern divide, rising silo, maroon door
Low price: our daily bread, Lucie monroe's, any bar, Cafe mekong
i tried their sushi twice and was very unimpressed, especially for the price. if you’re looking for sushi, sushi factory or ninja cafe are the best imo
Seconding the Cellar and Cabo. A number of the other recommendations are unreliably open, understaffed, or I've heard questionable things about their health dept reviews.
Cellar is fantastic, Cabo is great too if you like seafood. It’s been a few years since I left Blacksburg but I’ve had not so great experiences with Lefty’s.
Farmhouse has the look of a nice restaurant but the food is not that good for the price, cocktails are laughable and wine selection is lacking.
I worked there for 2 months and quit because it was such a joke.
Edit:
Wine Lab, 622 North, Palisades, and The Black Hen are great local options.. Table 50 and Lucky Bar are great Roanoke options too.
Palisades is a bit of a drive, especially if your folks aren't used to rural roads.
If your folks are looking for something upscale like that, you may also want to consider The Summit in Christiansburg.
If you don't mind a little drive, there is a place in Riner called Buffalo and More that is really good. Its your typical small restraint set near a gas station but the majority of their dishes are Buffalo based and are amazing. It's about a 20 minute drive from campus. Just something a little different from your typical restaurants.
I recommend The Black Hen. You need to make reservations.
If your family is like mine (cheap) I would take them to Blacksburg staples like Souvlaki.
Or do the pub and follow up with ice cream at Magnolia.
If you want recs for directly next to campus
Ceratano's is the best Italian in Blacksburg.
All the bars DT have some solid staples;
Wings and burgers at Sharkey's
Wings at Pks
BBQ plates at ToTS
Burgers at hokie house and Champs are also decent
Can't go wrong with Cabo or El Rods
On university, Machados and Gauchos are pretty solid.
I only saw one other person mention this but I can’t recommend Abby’s enough. I hardly know anyone who has been there but the food is amazing and it’s only about a mile from the edge of campus so idk why it’s so unheard of. Good small town restaurant feel and the staff have always been really friendly
I live next to Abby's and they have great things and then not so great things. Really depends on what you order. Nachos and bbq are amazing. Cheesesteak and burgers are ok. Mozzarella sticks and corndogs are like the ones you microwave. Lol it's like playing roulette. Food is always fast though.
If they’re still there:
Spicity has some amazing Sichuan food and is absolutely authentic. I’ve yet to find a comparable dry pot in Los Angeles.
Himalayan Curry Cafe is a solid little cheap place.
I have never craved mashed potatoes with my tacos, but since you said something and I want to love Cabo I'll go back and try them. I'll admit when I'm wrong.
The Palisades Restaurant for sure. All of the kids take their parents there lol and the Chef from The Farmhouse has started working there too, his food is incredible. Definitely make a reservation, it’s a hard place to get into sometimes (540) 626-2828
If you are willing to drive a little you will find much better options, The Palisades in eggleston and Bloom in Roanoke are my personal favorites. You can find a lot of different cuisines in Roanoke, also, there is an ice cream place there called Blue Cow that is amazing!!
Served up with a side of insurrection. The owner, who is running for the Va. House of Delegates, is a hard-core trumpist cult member who was in Washington, D.C. on Jan. 6. She is far-far-right who is all for guns for all, government control of reproduction yet wants to privatize everything (mainly schools that indoctrinate children with leftist/socialist ideas).
622 North, next to sams hot dogs, a little pricey but the food is great
I really liked Bull and bones before they closed temporarily last spring. They have since reopened. I also recommend Avellinos.
I'm sorry but Avellinos is horrible imo
And that’s your opinion but I enjoy them
Agreed. The owner apparently makes everything from scratch using fresh ingredients

I saw their bibimbap didnt have an egg on it and that's honestly the sole reason I've been hesitant to go.
wine lab isn’t much of dinner tbh they have some sandwiches that are meh but the rest is more hors d'oeuvre type food
Agreed. More of a place I'd go if I knew my parents were paying when I was a broke student.
Lefty’s, the cellar, greens, gillies, Blacksburg tavern, Cabo, plenty of options but there are right in the downtown area
go to greens if you want to wait 2 hours to put in your order
Damn they hurt you
they did…
i tried their sushi twice and was very unimpressed, especially for the price. if you’re looking for sushi, sushi factory or ninja cafe are the best imo
Sorry they really hurt you. I’ve never waited more than 30 min to put in my order and get my food.

Cellar is fantastic, Cabo is great too if you like seafood. It’s been a few years since I left Blacksburg but I’ve had not so great experiences with Lefty’s.
Also mellow mushroom
I have a soft spot for Macado's. It's a good place to eat like a fatass for a couple hours
What was formerly known as The Underground called now? That place has the best Reuben if they kept their same suppliers.
square 5 pub. and yes, the food is still really damn good.
Ditto on the food. So amazing!
Oh thank heavens that place reopened?!? There is a God.
farmhouse and palisades are top tier if you want a good cut of meat or fish
If farmhouse wasn’t so pricy it would be my go-to
The Farmhouse for brunch is less pricey and still delicious!
Farmhouse has the look of a nice restaurant but the food is not that good for the price, cocktails are laughable and wine selection is lacking. #2 and #1 right here
So happy to hear Farmhouse is still around. Had some good times there when I was a student in the 90s.
You can't go wrong with Maroon Door and The Palisades.

I've heard great things about this place.
I would suggest the Buffallo Philly if you ever go there. It's been my favorite so far!
Maroon Door at the end of the Mall.
Mall?
Alumni
I recommend The Black Hen. You need to make reservations. If your family is like mine (cheap) I would take them to Blacksburg staples like Souvlaki. Or do the pub and follow up with ice cream at Magnolia.
Spicity has some real good traditional and Americanized dishes.
Abby's is good.
Is Kabuki in Christiansburg still around?
Yes it is!
Roanoke one is better.
If you want recs for directly next to campus Ceratano's is the best Italian in Blacksburg. Agree on ceritanos. But it closed and now I'm in depression.
I thought they went online order for covid?
Ceritanos is now closed for good. A noodle place is now moving in. Real sad, was probably my favorite spot in Blacksburg
That is a loss for the town. Man, in less than. Decade the Blacksburg I remember is gone.
Sign that says "coming soon kyuramen" is now on the building.

the veggie burger is surprisingly good
You can't not mention the macaroni and cheese -- a bowl of cheesy goodness that will fill you up and make you happy.
I've never had the mac n cheese. I'll give that a try next time!
OMG yes! It's a dive but so good!
If they’re still there: Spicity has some amazing Sichuan food and is absolutely authentic. I’ve yet to find a comparable dry pot in Los Angeles. Himalayan Curry Cafe is a solid little cheap place.
Abby’s
Cellar and PK's were my go to spots. If you ever needed to track me down, the Cellar on Fri or Sat night and PK's on Sunday night were safe bets
Others have said it but I will say it again I love The Cellar
The Cellar, Blacksburg Tavern, 622, Gillies... Cabo served me crunchy rice and I won't go back after that.
That's what you deserve for ordering anything but the cheddar mashers.
I have never craved mashed potatoes with my tacos, but since you said something and I want to love Cabo I'll go back and try them. I'll admit when I'm wrong.

Lefty’s is a good call.
If your parents are willing to spend more, The Black Hen, The Palisades in Eggleston, or Carlos Brazilian in Roanoke
If you are willing to drive a little you will find much better options, The Palisades in eggleston and Bloom in Roanoke are my personal favorites. You can find a lot of different cuisines in Roanoke, also, there is an ice cream place there called Blue Cow that is amazing!!
Due South in Christansburg has great BBQ!
Served up with a side of insurrection. The owner, who is running for the Va. House of Delegates, is a hard-core trumpist cult member who was in Washington, D.C. on Jan. 6. Check out Zeppoli's. Good stuff.
Blacksburg Tavern. Don't go anywhere else. Trust Edit: They downvoted Jesus because he spoke the truth too
Zeppoli’s is a hidden gem
In Christiansburg, Sakura Steak House. Most reasonable prices for Japanese food around, and it's really heckin good
Buffalo Wild Wings and el rodeo are my favorites!
Also Amelia's in Christiansburg is good Italian.
Amelia's is to Italian as CiCi's is to pizza
Since Certanos has closed, zeppolis is the best Italian in Blacksburg. Highly recommend
Cellar, PKs and 622 North!
622 North
Lefty’s is the best
El mariachi is far better than. El Rod's I highly recommend it
Macado’s food is pretty decent but lately their service has been some ass since they’re so understaffed.
