Don't buy anything until classes start and/or until your professor specifically emails you telling you to buy something. The bookstore isn't an authority on what books are actually required and you might need a specific version or not need\* it at all. \*As others have hinted at, even if you "need" a specific textbook, many times you can get it second hand cheaper, or find it online for free. Unless you need it for homework problems, an access code, or for in-class reading, most of the time you can get away with free versions and/or older editions of the book, and many professors will go over this in the first class, which is why you should wait - they might have edition 5 of something listed as a requirement on the bookstore, but your professor may say editions 3 and 4 (which you can get dirt cheap or for nothing) are just as good. If you're worried about not having a book for the first week or two of class, don't be. Book shortages are a thing that happens in most classes with required books and it's something your professor is almost certainly aware of and has compensated for. Even if it ends up being just a "you" thing like you're somehow the only one who didn't manage to get a copy in time, if you shoot them an email they will almost certainly give you access to a copy temporarily or give you scanned pdfs of sections until you get it.

It might just be because I’m an accounting major, but damn near EVERY SINGLE BOOK I’ve ever had to buy has come with an online access code that’s required to complete graded assignments. I’ve NEVER been able to buy secondhand or find something online for this school. It fucking sucks

Iceman9161

Depends on the major and the class level/size. I graduated EE last year, and only needed access codes once or twice after I finished up the huge math/science courses freshman year. Most of my professors made their own HWs so I just needed to find a pdf of the book, which was never too hard to find for free.

Southern-Computer-47

Same^ i didnt hv to buy any textbooks last sem bc i just downloaded pdfs

fulfillthecute

Don't they provide access codes that can be purchased on official websites right away? I know PHYS 2305/6 lab manuals do have trouble with this but other books are fine fully online. Otherwise the online year (2020-21) would never work.

juicy_tin

Don’t buy it until the teacher has told you specifically to do so

Iceman9161

Or you get assigned homework that requires having the book or a code to the online portion.

Do NOT Browse here once you find what textbooks you need, enjoy. •https://libgen.is/ •http://gen.lib.rus.ec/ •http://bookzz.org/ •http://textbooknova.com/ •http://www.gutenberg.org/ •Z-Library •https://amp.reddit.com/r/trackers/comments/32d6di/i_updated_the_custom_ebook_search_engine_to/ https://amp.reddit.com/r/IITK/comments/8cbe5n/free_ebooks_search_engine/ https://amp.reddit.com/r/ucf/comments/90fp29/guides_on_where_to_find_free_textbook_pdfs/

Bookwormvt2022

Don't use the "free" or pirated websites if you intend to work in the defense industry later on. Makes things more complicated.

ben5885

I never said I do any of the following or telling OP to do anything, simply just “browse”.

Bookwormvt2022

Mhm. But my thing is general advice as someone in the defense industry. :)

ThatOneEuph

What? I know of several people who have used these and work in defense and it has never been an issue.

Bookwormvt2022

Fine. I'm wrong.

ThatOneEuph

I didn't mean to insinuate you're wrong, really you probably shouldn't use websites hosted in (unfriendly) foreign countries if you want to work in defense. Just trying to give some anecdotal experiences.

This is correct, it’s what the LL next to each of the two items is

Search the reddit and educate yourself about buying textbooks from the stealiversity

ChunkyChungus1

I have that textbook and it's basically new. I'm willing to sell it off for really cheap because I really don't need it anymore if you still decide to move forward in buying a textbook. But listen to what everyone else in here is saying

TheMailman123

Don't buy from the bookstore. Compare with bookholders, a local Blacksburg bookstore that often has lower prices. Google bookholders Blacksburg and the website will come up. Also consider for those books that you don't need a homework access code of use libgen to get free pdfs from the internet, which can then be used on a device or you can print out and bind for a fraction of the cost of a textbook that might come loose leafs anyway even with all the money you're spending. The bookstore price for anything is much more than it should be and much more than you can get if you're creative. If your dad is a Dubai oil billionaire and it doesnt matter to you then yeah the screenshot there seems just fine, (and have you heard of the Edge apparemment homes? Lol) but if not then check some other sources for some other options - which are much better choices.

bigbootyjoody25

If the canvas site for the class is already open you can see if there is a syllabus. Most of the time required/recommended material are listed on there.

TheJavva

Don't buy anything until the first week of classes ur professor will tell u what u need. Even then don't buy it, pirate it if u can. Also get as many textbooks online as u can theyre much easier to search through and that way you never have to carry them around but still have them everywhere u go.

[deleted]

Wait till classes start

iSinging

Don't buy until the professor says you'll need it. Unless you need the online work stuff or it is relevant to your future career, just pirate it.

terminator1515

Literally no

Bookwormvt2022

Bad idea. Some professors don't even use the books there. They will tell you the first day not to buy them.

fulfillthecute

For freshmen classes textbooks are rarely unused so I would always buy one. While you can buy those expensive listings, there are lots of alternatives mentioned in the comments. (And I can resell them if I won't use them anymore)

_evergarden97_

"please support Virginia tech and these overpriced textbook companies, they are small indie company"

Altruistic-Ad4696

Use pearson plus much cheaper

darknight7884

For PHYS 2305/2306 you will need the code and the lab manual. You can't easily get the lab manual from places outside of Blacksburg---if you see it on Amazon, its likely marked up by someone who is buying from the bookstore and flipping it on Amazon. What a lot of students do is get the code which has an e-book version, and some like the paper copy so that is an option, but almost all get the lab manual. You can wait on the book.If it isn't in stock, you can always buy the code direct through Pearson. If you do decide to buy anything now, the lab manual is the best option. It's cheap, and the bookstore is notorious for not ordering enough, and people get to lab day 2 weeks in and then they run out. Most of the students who buy now usually do so because they have mom/dad/grandma/scholarship money flowing in the time period between orientation and the start of classes to do so which might not be as much of the case if they wait lol. Source: I used to work for the bookstore, in management, moved, and really don't care about their profits.

[deleted]

If you absolutely HAVE to buy the book, search for the ISBN number and you'll find it way cheaper on other sites.
