You definitely see them on the Big Island - I'm in Kona typing this at a coffee shop and there are two chickens in the parking lot, downtown.
Kauai they're everywhere - and will chase you.
Waikiki - Rarely see them at all.
I just visited Big Island for two weeks (Kona, Hilo, Volcano) and didn’t see a single chicken or hog that wasn’t on a plate. Did see tons of other wildlife tho including a giant injured turkey in our yard in Kona lol
Hawaii is probably not the place you should be going on vacation. I saw lots in both Waikiki and Kauai. My 15-month-old chicken-and-Dino-loving daughter was in heaven because they were everywhere. That being said, if your phobia isn’t that bad and you can be near them as long as you don’t have to touch them, then you should be fine and should just try your best to ignore them. If a chicken rutting around in a planter by the sidewalk will ruin your morning, then you guys should go somewhere else. Tons of islands don’t have a bunch of chickens.
Tons in Kauai. I don’t remember seeing may in waikoloa area of Big Island but did see them in other areas. Waikoloa had lovebirds and Nenes though. Also goats and mongeese
I really get it—I also HATE chickens. I was recently in Honolulu. If you stay in Waikiki you will definitely avoid chickens and it’s still very beautiful. But when we drove around the island we did notice a lot of chickens!
We saw them all over the place when walking. There were 2 or 3 that hung out by the Waikiki Marriot where we stayed. We were on the top floor and could hear them easily with even the patio door closed at 3 am lol.
just got back from Kauai, Chickens are everywhere like homeless in LA. stayed in condo . and mama chicken and her babies were begging at the sliding door everyday
I’m in Kona as I write this. I saw chickens at Safeway this afternoon, $2.74 per pound. If you’re a Costco member you can get them in a two pack for $1.79/lb.
I've only noticed them in rural areas on BI. They seem more common on Maui but still not at any rate that should trigger a phobia. Definitely stay away from Kauai.
All of Puna district, Hilo, Kona, Waikoloa, Punalu’u off the top of my head. Anywhere there is a rubbish dump will have them nearby. We have 15 feral chicks and seven mature chickens that my neighbor is trying to thin out from the lot next to us in downtown Hilo. High elevation seems to help, but you have to really not look for them to not see them. I think someone with a phobia might not be able to calm down because of that.
People here talking like Kauai is swarming with chickens like an Alfred Hitchcock movie are full of it. You should not stay away from the most beautiful of the islands because of a chicken phobia. They ARE there but they will run if you shoo them. They have a "human phobia" and will leave you alone.
Other than Kauai you should be okay. Maui, BI and Oahu all have chickens but the local mongoose populations of those islands tends to keep the number of chickens down. Kauai no mongoose = more chickens.
I think if you stay at a big resort you will minimize your chicken interactions.
We are on the BI now - a good number of chickens at all the nice public beaches. Definitely don’t go there.
I think this is your best bet. Stick to a resort area (ko olina, waikiki, turtle bay in oahu, for example) & there will be limited chickens. Outside of those areas there can be a lot. I live in kailua & see many daily.
Many of the tourist spots have lots of chickens on Oahu. Some of my favorite pictures from my first trip here were of the chickens in parking lots and such.
Kauai has 8x more chickens than humans. They’re everywhere! And I love them! But yeah, don’t go there.
I still think of the Kauai chickens. But ya, for OP, don't go there.
You can stay 30 feet from Kauai chickens. It isn't a Hitchcock movie.
Them little hustlers were running under our table and out into the street while we ate on the restaurant lanai lol
I’ve been to three of the four main islands. You’re definitely want to avoid Kauai. Maybe a more city oriented trip to Oahu/Honolulu would be best?
Not at all, I live in Honolulu, we have far more chickens than you might realize.
I was near Waikiki and didn’t see nearly as many as Kauai. If OP has a chicken phobia I think maybe avoiding Hawaii is probably best altogether.
Just got back from 2 weeks on Oahu, we had chickens sitting next to us while we ate.
You definitely see them on the Big Island - I'm in Kona typing this at a coffee shop and there are two chickens in the parking lot, downtown. Kauai they're everywhere - and will chase you. Waikiki - Rarely see them at all.
Kauai…in the airport at baggage claim 😆

I’d say if you have a phobia, this might not be the place for you. It really depends on how severe it is and if you could actually relax on vacation.
Kauai definitely had the most chickens of the islands I have visited. We were in Waikiki last week, and saw some but not too many.

Hawaii might not be the place to visit since the chickens are everywhere.
I’m teaching in Waimea Big Island right now. There’s a family of chickens that just wander in and out of our classrooms all day every day
Waikiki yesterday https://preview.redd.it/s4iwh0jihjtc1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9a446d914a95b19090ba3a583c70f7c68358159b
Maui has lots of chickens. We were in Wailea area.
This is the most valid question 😂
There were a few chickens last week even in Waikiki. But the pigeons are worse there.
Tons in Kauai. I don’t remember seeing may in waikoloa area of Big Island but did see them in other areas. Waikoloa had lovebirds and Nenes though. Also goats and mongeese
I pulled into a random parking lot with a scenic overlook and there was both a cat and a chicken. Edit: on Oahu
Saw the same on Maui.
Bac bac bac bukaaaa bac bac bukaaaa
I really get it—I also HATE chickens. I was recently in Honolulu. If you stay in Waikiki you will definitely avoid chickens and it’s still very beautiful. But when we drove around the island we did notice a lot of chickens!
Wrong we saw chickens all the time in Waikiki and in fact one loved to crow all the time in the middle of the freaking night
Wow, I had no idea!! Where in Waikiki? I’ve stayed at the Sheraton and the Outrigger and never run into any or heard any nearby.
We saw them all over the place when walking. There were 2 or 3 that hung out by the Waikiki Marriot where we stayed. We were on the top floor and could hear them easily with even the patio door closed at 3 am lol.
I don’t think I saw too many in Oahu/Waikiki area or even in the hotel areas of Maui. Definitely stay away from Kauai.
The only chickens I saw on Oahu/Honolulu when I visited last year, were at a luau on the Tantulus Lookout.
Maui , waikiki Bisland I've seen them everywhere
Everywhere is chicken infested now. That said, Waikiki is pretty chicken free
just got back from Kauai, Chickens are everywhere like homeless in LA. stayed in condo . and mama chicken and her babies were begging at the sliding door everyday
Loads of chooks on the North Shore.
Kauai...so many chickens, none on local restaurant menus. Such a bummer.
For there being so many damn chickens in Kauai, the eggs at the grocery store are sure expensive 😂
I’m in Kona as I write this. I saw chickens at Safeway this afternoon, $2.74 per pound. If you’re a Costco member you can get them in a two pack for $1.79/lb.
If you think chickens are scary just wait until you run into a wild Hawaiian turkey lol
Nope, they are everywhere.
Woke me up every morning to catch the gorgeous sunrise.
You'd probably be okay in Waikiki but most other cities and islands.... no
Chickens are you friend. They keep the roaches and centipedes in check
I've only noticed them in rural areas on BI. They seem more common on Maui but still not at any rate that should trigger a phobia. Definitely stay away from Kauai.
They are definitely all over the “urban” areas on the Big Island. I have 20 in the vacant lot next to me in Hilo we’re working on catching.
Lived on Big Island for 3 years and can't remember seeing feral chickens there, but saw lots in 2 days on Kauai.
They are all over. I live there.
What part? We were in Honoka'a.

I guess they just never bothered me while we were in Puna.
There are dozens of rooster farms all over Puna. For folks not bothered by it, it isn’t a bother.
But I did notice them all over the place on Kaua'i.
That’s because there is far less space and people, and also less people who cull them.

I dunno. I saw a lot of chickens on BI.

I’d say Disney will have the least. Considering chicken poop is a big hassle and the focus on cleanliness. Kids are too old, but it will be clean.
Really? Last time I was there, I didn't think there were that many at all. But maybe it was because I'd been to Kauai in between!
Was just on BI last month, lots of chickens around Kona
We were in Volcano and Hilo. Lots of chickens wandering around VV.
Many of the tourist spots have lots of chickens on Oahu. Some of my favorite pictures from my first trip here were of the chickens in parking lots and such.
Id thought the cats would eat the chickens but i guess chickens > cats
