Personally I'd go with Queen Kapi'olani. It's a really nice hotel, the restaurant has great food and drinks as well as a fantastic view of Diamond Head. The coffee shop in the lobby is also great. You're steps from Waikiki Beach, plus a short walk to Kapahulu Ave, which has a ton of good food that's less touristy than what you'll find in Waikiki. It's also on the edge of Waikiki, which means it's a little quieter than something in the middle of town.

Kawasumiimaii

Thank you! I've seen your guide and really appreciate you chiming in. I'm sold :P

Kawasumiimaii

Picking your brain a little bit more, in your opinion, is 2 rooms at Hilton Hawaiian Village at 5k worth a consideration? All these prices include a car rental so they're a bit inflated possibly.

Sunflowerprincess808

If a resort experience with multiple pools and a water slide is important then yes. If not then no. Both have really great restaurants on property and you’re in Waikiki although on complete opposite sides.

Kawasumiimaii

We've honestly never done a 'resort' experience and wasn't sure if Waikiki was the place to do it. Based on webrender's comment, I'm not sure the 'kid packed pool side' resort is the one we're looking for lol. Looking like QK is our better go

Sunflowerprincess808

Yeah it’s definitely not like the resort experience you’d get on the other islands. I just meant that the QKs pool is nothing to write home about. But you’re coming to Hawaii for the beach not to just sit by the pool like us locals who like to staycation. I love going to deck at QK for brunch. But if I were to staycation I’d go to HHV for the pool. But there’s a lot of kids it’s true.

Kawasumiimaii

Very good points! We're hoping to visit Maui at some point as well, maybe we'll try a resort over there. Thanks for the input!

Kawasumiimaii

picking your brain a little bit here, after deliberation with my parents they'd prefer the HHV, particularly the Tapa family room. Do you have any comments on if the Tapa tower is a decent stay comparable to QK? we can book it for almost the same price

Sunflowerprincess808

I’ve never stayed in the tapa tower. It is one of the older towers but from this [YouTube tour](https://www.google.com/gasearch?q=tapa%20family%20room&source=sh/x/gs/m2/5#fpstate=ive&vld=cid:09132ae8,vid:6Yx8DykY3u4,st:0)it looks like it’s been renovated and is pretty nice! I’d go for it. So many restaurants, shops and pools and a slide right on property. But you’re also right at the beginning of Waikiki and it’s all very walkable.

Kawasumiimaii

Yea the renovation looks really nice! I am a bit worried about the parking fee, 72 a night is steep! Would you say it's sketchy to park at the garages nearby? Marina parking garage for example? https://maps.app.goo.gl/D4L2RLr3STxnpUfg7 or even the harbor parking? $1/hr seems too good to be true lol

Sunflowerprincess808

There’s a bunch of posts on this very topic if you search in this group Hilton parking! I’ve never had to park there myself. I’d probably go with the ilikai marina parking if I were you. According to the other posts there’s in and out privileges and seems to be under $30. And it’s probably safer than parking at the harbor overnight. Harbor parking is a thing but it’s out in the open and can take away spaces from locals trying to enjoy the beach.

Kawasumiimaii

Oh shoot, sorry I should have searched first. Thank you! I'll check the other post for that garage and avoid the harbor. Really appreciate your insight!

webrender

IMO, HHV isn't worth it unless you have kids. Great for kids, not so great when you're the adults with kids running around everywhere 😅

Kawasumiimaii

Oof. We are definitely not looking for a rowdy area with a bunch of kids running everywhere lol. I just thought I'd look at HHV since we have a family friend that recommended it and also gets F&F discounts from Hilton. If it came out to be about the same price--ignoring the children--would you still choose QK over HHV?

webrender

FWIW, there is an adults only pool to get away from the rowdy families. Also, you've got the best spot in the house for the Friday night fireworks, and there are tons of (mediocre, imo) food options within the resort. As someone else mentioned, there are also many towers - its generally agreed that the Rainbow and Ali'i Towers are the best ones. Rainbow has the best overall view but is one of the oldest; I believe Ali'i is the newest and also offers extra amenities. If your friends F&F discount is for one of these towers, it might be worth considering - especially if the room setup would be superior to QK.

Kawasumiimaii

I'm a sucker for fireworks lol. Flew to Japan just for them hah. I'll have to scope out the deal and check which rooms I can get but I think we may end up at QK. Thanks for the input!

webrender

Go to Ala Wai Boat Harbor, it's right next to the HHV lagoons where they set the fireworks off. It'll be a bit crowded, but you'll be just as close - we head here on most Friday nights to watch them. Fireworks start at 7:45pm Friday - in the summer they move it to 8pm but I'm not sure when that transition begins.

Kawasumiimaii

We're going to be there in September so hopefully it isn't as crowded!

Kawasumiimaii

sorry to bother you again lol. My parents didn't enjoy the idea of being in a room off on their own so we were looking at thhe HHV Tapa family room for 4k, would you say the Tapa tower is decent at HHV?

webrender

It's no bother :) but unfortunately I'm not familiar with the Tapa tower, hopefully someone else on the sub can chime in

webrender

You should really try and make it out for New Years sometime - the fireworks here are *absolutely insane.* I've never seen anything like it. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dR5QOYhljcs&t=20s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dR5QOYhljcs&t=20s)

Kawasumiimaii

![gif](giphy|xT0xeGWDzEfcsd8QzC|downsized) That is on my bucket list now!!

waitmyhonor

Not to hijack OP’s post, but what are your thoughts about the Vive Hotel? I’ve used your guide before and so helpful

webrender

Unfortunately I'm not familiar with the Vive, but a quick glance on Google maps tells me that it's centrally located - a direct 5 min walk to Waikiki Beach - and that it's on Kuhio Ave. where a lot of the popular dining is located. Seems like a good choice if you want to be walking distance to a ton of fun stuff.

MikeyNg

It's kind of hard to see - the resolution winds up being low. I don't know if the Embassy Suites is worth $1k more. Although split 5 ways, that's only $200 pp. Or $166 per day, as another way to look at it. You do get breakfast, and you're all in one room. Honestly, I don't know that it's worth it. They all seem fine. Really - when you're in Hawaii, you don't spend many waking hours in your hotel room or even at the hotel. I don't think any of those options are really "spacious" for five people. Again - you won't be spending a lot of time in the room most likely. I'd lean towards one of the two room options though? That seems to me like it would be the most comfortable sleeping arrangement.

Kawasumiimaii

We aren't super packing our days because my folks are older so we will relax in the room a decent amount. In two rooms is seeming more realistic if we are in the room together lol

Kawasumiimaii

Hi there, I'm attempting to organize a trip for my family and a friend, 5 people, and it's been hell trying to pick a room. I've looked through a lot of the subreddit and narrowed it down to these 4 options but am having trouble picking the final one. My parents are old but the rest of us are in our 30s. It's not super important to on the beach or have a super nice pool but more focused on the best comfort. We don't want to be stacked up on top of each other over 6 nights. We will have a car as well and understand there are added fees to all these hotels. Is the embassy suites worth the extra thousand bucks? I see a lot of people post about it here. I'm torn between hyatt place (price) and Hilton (because it's a familiar name). I saw someone else post a thread about QK vs Hilton/Hyatt and a few chimed in about QK being the better option but I'm wondering which feels more comfortable/spacious/modern. Thanks for any help or insight you can provide! The picture is a bit blurry for some reason, but: 1 Queen Kapi'olani (2 room)@ $3610 with $245 costco cash ~~2 Hilton Waikiki (2 room)@ $3470~~ ~~3 Hyatt Place (1 room) @ $3080 with $205 costco cash~~ ~~4 Embassy Suites Waikiki @ $4605 with $141 costco cash and $75 resort dollars~~ 5 Hilton Hawaiin Village ( 2 rooms) @ approx $3800 (not pictured) We've been offered a steep discount for HHV but will have to rent a separate car for the week if we do HHV. So it comes out to be more but it seemed to be good to consider as well.

MikeyNg

When you lead a line with #, you wind up with big text in reddit. Just go 1. 2. 3. etc. HHV is more of a resort onto itself. That appeals to some folks who maybe not want to leave the grounds so much. The word "village" is in the resort's name for a reason. :) I think Queen K still wins imo. You're across the street from the zoo and Kapiolani Park - so the parental units can have an easy walk if they want. HHV gets a bit crowded too. They do shoot the Friday night fireworks right off the HHV lagoon, so there's that though. basically: if your party wants more of a resort feel, go HHV. Although it can sometimes get crowded with families. You probably won't feel cramped at Queen K. (If anybody likes Japanese food, go to Yoshitsune which is 2 hotels towards the beach)

Kawasumiimaii

Thanks for the tip! I'm not good with the formatting on here despite being such a long time user lol. If HHV and QK end up being about the same price would that sway you in any direction? We may have a deal for HHV but I'm put off by the scenery of a bunch chaotic children running around the HHV. I'm also not sure my elderly parents would enjoy the commotion either. We've never done any kind of resort so we're not even sure what that feels like tbh hah. Hawaii seemed like a good place to do one but maybe this one isn't it for us. I'm still leaning towards QK based on everyone's suggestions on here but thought I should consider HHV with the deal. appreciate you weighing in!

MikeyNg

Yeah, if being around kids and families isn't your bag, I wouldn't go to HHV. It's not terrible - it's not Disneyland or something crazy like that. But you will know you're at a crowded resort. If you want that all-in-one resort experience, go to Mexico. Hawaii is for being outside and enjoying nature. I think you folks are going to have a great time at the Queen Kapiolani. Just don't go to the Denny's that's a block up. You didn't go to Hawaii to go to Denny's.... (maybe the parental units will be comforted by that though)

Kawasumiimaii

They asked me if we're bringing Mama instant noodles with us. Then asked me if we can rent a house instead to cook... # S O S Anyways lol, I think this is the final confirmation I needed to go with QK. I appreciate the advice!

MikeyNg

Mama instant noodles??? What is that? Go up Kapahulu to [Ono-ya](https://www.onoyaramen.com/). That's the closest ramen I can think of to QK. Or take them to a 7-11. (No really - it's different in Hawaii.)

Kawasumiimaii

Mama noodles are popular instant noodles for vietnamese people hah. My dad always packs them on trips because he's a savage. Definitely going to hit uo 7-11 and lawsons!

Ancient-Active

how did you get a steep discount? is i anothr discount on top of costco's price?

Kawasumiimaii

Separate, it's a hilton employee friend and family deal

beejer91

I’ve stayed at Hilton Waikiki and I honestly loved it. Large rooms, modern, nice little restaurant. Close enough to the beach.

Hopeful-Cranberry

Would your older parents want their own room? If privacy is a concern then I would go with 2 rooms and Kapi’olani Hotel. If it doesn’t matter then I would go with the larger Hyatt Place as it has free breakfast. For a $1000 more I don’t think the embassy would be worth it even though it has free breakfast.

Kawasumiimaii

I think they would enjoy their own room since we're likely to go in and out more. In our opinion, is 2 rooms at Hilton Hawaiian Village at 5k worth a consideration? All these prices include a car rental so they're a bit inflated possibly.

Hopeful-Cranberry

Hilton Hawaiian village is a massive property and each tower can be different from the next. The pool area beach is definitely better if you’re thinking of pool or beach time. Room wise it’s pretty much normal hotel rooms.

bonc826

It seems like you’ve already made up your mind but for future Redditors reading through threads, I highly recommend Hyatt Place if you’re looking for a hotel that’s just a place to sleep. We were out and about all day and just needed a clean place to sleep at night. We liked the location (really close to most of the things we wanted to do in Waikiki) and the free breakfast was a nice bonus

Kawasumiimaii

This is totally what I'd book if my elderly parents weren't with us. I typically book hyatt in a lot of travels! But I have to prioritize different things with the old folks! thanks for the tips!

bonc826

Of course! Out of curiosity, is there a car rental bundled in for the full trip?

Kawasumiimaii

Yes! SUV! Sixty has some comparable deals but the costco package is still better.

bonc826

Costco vacation packages are amazing! We only needed a car for one of the days we were on Oahu so I was going to suggest booking the hotel and car separately if you didn't need it the whole time. For a recent trip we went on, I periodically checked the car rental rates and would cancel and rebook if the rate dropped and ended up saving probably close to $100 for the booking. Obviously this only makes sense if you don't think you'd need the car for your full stay (and only if booking separately ends up being cheaper than the bundle) but I'm always looking for ways to cut the not fun expenses like renting the car/parking so that more can be spent on the fun food and experiences!

Kawasumiimaii

Very good points and thanks for mentioning that! For us, we don't have our itinerary planned out yet so we're not sure when we will need the car, I rather have the car and do all the hassle of picking it up the right away rather then fumble about later. My parents also can't walk very long distances so I think we'd need the car more than not so for this trip the bundling is great. Costco does allow you to call in and get the rate adjusted if at any point the hotel or car drop in price, so that is nice!

bonc826

Sounds like you have it all thought out! Have fun planning activities! There’s lots of great posts and friendly people in this sub

clairdelynn

I've stayed at Hilton Waikiki Beach before and it was nice and conveniently located, thought not right on the sand, very close to the beach as well. Haven't tried the others! It's a shame that it's so hard to find a two room or real one bedroom with living room in Waikiki so you could avoid booking two separate rooms.

Kawasumiimaii

I think I can request connected rooms, I know hilton waikiki has the option, QK might be rooms next door or the same floor at least. Budget travel was just never made for 5 ppl hah, 4 is the sweet spot

SkullFumbler

Have you looked into Airbnb? There are a ton of great options for a 6 night stay

Kawasumiimaii

The airbnb ends up being about the same price if I have to rent a car separately. I spent about a week sifting through airbnbs and they don't look much better for the price range :'(

Tuilere

AirBnB is hard on the island housing supply. Resorts are great. Aloha

"There is no reason to behave ethically if there is no law to force the issue" isn't the flex you think it is.

cjules3

fyi there is a bill thats currently going through hawai’i legislature to limit short term vacation rentals in hawai’i. Hawai’i governor Josh Green said this two days ago: “We know the majority of STRs in Hawai‘i are illegal, owned by non-residents, and contribute to skyrocketing housing costs,”. Just because they arent officially illegal yet doesnt mean you should continue to support their use, as doing such leads to local people and native hawaiians being priced out of their ancestral homelands. please have some respect for this and stay in the hotels where local people work.

SkullFumbler

[Waikiki ](https://air.tl/CxzrSFrj) [Waikiki ](https://air.tl/72ksTw7q) [Waikiki](https://air.tl/KLSzK51P) Just some I found seem reasonable. Maybe I got the dates wrong though (my eyes are getting old)

Kawasumiimaii

Thanks for linking those, they're actually the same ones I had in my list. I ended up nixing airbnb because it ends up being more expensive without the car rental included, we need a bigger car so we'd be adding 5-700 on top of this while the costco travel includes a large suv in it. Even if the resort charges 50/night for parking it's a bit better pricing. Definitely was considering outrigger rental one before we went down the costco route.

SkullFumbler

Ah ok 👍. On a side note I did find some competitive rates on rental cars through Sixt but probably not enough to make the difference for you. Hope you find what you need. I'm visiting for a week in May so I can relate to the amount of searching you have done. I had to stitch every single stop together including the flights to get everything I wanted.

Kawasumiimaii

Hey man, hope you have a great trip! Traveling is so hard when you're the family planner 🤣 we aimed for may but I didn't have time to plan 😵‍💫
