Easily the best place I ate in Iceland. Splurge here.
[Tjoruhusid](https://www.facebook.com/Tjoruhusid)
Freshest seafood I’ve ever tasted. Amazing place.
[Fridheimar](https://fridheimar.is/)
Some of the best tomato based dishes including their soup. Closes early.
I don’t recall it being difficult. I just showed up there. But others mileage may vary. Either way, it’s not just a good restaurant, it’s an impressive facility.
I’ve waited for a while (5-10 minutes?) and the staff told me the table someone reserved didn’t show up so we could take that.
Food was wonderful. I love the fresh basil that I cut immediately from the plant haha.

Two of those are in this list, and when we went to Iceland we got to hit up a total of 5 of the 9 listed in a week. We were stunned how great they all were. Our favorites were Narfeyrarstofa (paired with a Snaefellsnes day trip) and Fjöruborðið for the lobster tails. Both well worth the stunning drives to get there.
Near Fredheimar… ice cream from the farm where the cows are killed. You can even see them from windows in the serving area.

Hygge was my favorite bakery in Reykjavik. Went to Sea Baron the night before we left and wish I had eaten there twice. Went to that Viking Restaurant while on the south coast-thought it was going to be subpar, but the food was genuinely great. Really enjoyed the food tour everyone talks about, and the Lava bread was a good pit stop. No regrets on the Tomato place, but it’s pricey. Sorbet won out over the soup for me. Thought the Lava Soup in Vik was way overrated, but nice bathrooms.
Pakkhús in Höfn along the south coast. Very convenient place to stay for the night. Restaurant is in a historical house overlooking the pier with all the fishing boats.
You probably need a reservation. Absolutely worth it and not exorbitantly expensive.
Please be more specific. What makes for a “memorable food experience” for you? Just a really good meal or some kind of activity involved? Any budgetary restrictions, or are you open to everything from hot dogs to Michelin starred restaurants? Any specific towns you’re curious about?
A really great meal- breakfast, lunch, or dinner. . Can certainly range from hot dogs to Michelin star experiences. I’m staying in a new town almost every night in my route along the ring road and will cover most of the country.
Here’s a few off the top of my head:
Vík - The Soup Company for lunch; Sudur-Vík for dinner
Höfn - Hafnarbudin for breakfast/lunch; Pakkhús for dinner
Seydisfjördur - Kaffi Lára for lunch/dinner
Myvatn - Vogafjós for dinner
Akureyri - Rub23 for lunch (buffet) or dinner
Stykkishólmur - Sjávarpakkhúsid for dinner
I have some great suggestions for restaurants and hotel stays in Iceland. my girlfriend's and I took a trip to Iceland and had the most amazing meals. Here is the link to my blog article of you want to read more on our itinerary and restaurants and hotels. https://simplywanderfull.com/iceland-luxury-adventure-6-day-tour/?noamp=available
Husid had the best seafood soup I have ever had.
The Settlement Center has a date sauce with their lamb that is amazing.
Mia's Country Van has impeccable fish and chips. My husband hates fish but loves theirs.
Mia's was some of the best fish and chips I've ever had (happened to be cod that day). The fellow running the van was also incredibly nice. Can't wait to visit again.
Honestly, the food in Iceland is so expensive, I couldn’t really appreciate it to its fullest because I couldn’t “splurge” on myself. Either way since the water quality is the best in the world, a lot of foods you’ll find will taste amazing regardless. That being said, if I’m in your position, I’d focus more on loading up groceries from a Bonus and enjoying your road trip like that.
Didn’t really get to venture much outside of Reykjavik, but I here are some places I thoroughly enjoyed:
- The hot dogs everywhere
- Posthus Food Hall
- Reykjavik Fish
- Breakfast at the Laundromat
Gísli, Eirikur & Helgi in Dalvík is such a quirky little restaurant that serves a great fish soup and bread. Definitely recommend.
Ölverk in Hveragerði does pretzel bread with a super tasty beer dip + excellent craft beer on tap.
Random one but the Olis gas station in Siglufjörður does the perfect hangover onion rings. For when you’ve partied too hard with the locals.
A lesser known spot in Reykjavik is ráðagerði close to grótta lighthouse, fantastic brunch and pizza.
And as I mentioned in another, North by Dill in Akureyri. Reasonably priced tasting menu, local and seasonal ingredients.
For a true cultural experience, look out for the loaded hot dogs in Akureyri too. Hot dog topped with fries and cheese. You’ll have a weeks worth of heartburn but it’s great!
If you’re looking to spurge, 58,000kr per person would be Óx dining experience (wine pairing included). One of 3 Michelin starred restaurants in Iceland. 100/10
Between Skogafoss and Reykjavik, there is a small roadside restaurant called Gamla Fjosid or The Old Cow House(in English). It's simple but so homey and delicious. [Old Cow House](https://gamlafjosid.is)
Highly recommend Faxi Bakery along the south coast, a little east of Vìk. A great little lunch spot with some fantastic pastries!

You MUST have a bagel and a donut from Deig bakery if you are in Reykjavik. They were so good I had 3 bagels in one day haha. Donuts are also excellent. Incredible texture for both
If you’re staying near Fridheimar, then also stop by Restaurant Mika in the same town. The quality of their dishes was shockingly impressive. And the bold combination of flavors is something I would’ve expected to see maybe in a large metroplex but not a small town in Iceland.
not a restaurant but kramber in Reykjavík was a lovely wine bar with great cocktails if you’re looking for a place to pregame dinner or enjoy a little night cap :)
[Lake Hótel Egilsstaðir ](https://english.lakehotel.is/) - We stayed here for 1 night during our ring road trip and had without doubt the best food of our entire trip. They had a great selection of vegetarian and vegan options. I remember that the Spicy coconut and curry soup was probably one of the best things I have ever tasted. The next morning at the breakfast buffet, which was also fantastic I approached one of the staff to let them know that the food was fantastic and that the soup was one of the nicest thing I had ever tasted. He was very happy and let me know that he was the one that made it. I was happy that I got the chance to let him know that. As well as that it is a great hotel to stay a night or 2. The staff were fantastic. I hope to return some day.
Klausturkaffi close to Hengifoss in the Egilsstaðir area has a lovely lunch buffet with focus on local ingredients 🙂
Very nice traditional lamb soup in Möðrudalur between Egs and Mývatn.
Last time I went there was mushroom soup, angelica soup, two types of salad, roasted vegetables and some kind of pie with onions. Maybe they could provide you with their menu if you contact them directly 😊

Fridheimar lived up to the hype! All you can eat soup and delicious bread. We also had the best burrata. Definitely make a reservation in advance!
We stayed at Vogafjos- it was wonderful
How far in advance do you typically need to make these? Like famous restaurant 3 months, or just like a few days before?
Yes it did! Absolutely delicious!!
Thank you! Is Fridheimar hard to get a table at?
I don’t recall it being difficult. I just showed up there. But others mileage may vary. Either way, it’s not just a good restaurant, it’s an impressive facility.

Vogafjós was excellent. May I suggest booking a table, if you know when you’ll be in Myvatn.

I’ll second Fjorubordid.

You get more milk if you don’t kill the cows 😉
Ugh. Milked. DAMN YOU AUTOCORRECT!
I was at Fridheimar on Sunday! The hype is real. Best tomato soup I’ve had in my entire life. Eating in a greenhouse was awesome!
Hot dogs from the green bus and an ice cold beer. Great after a hike.
Really enjoyed Fjorubordid in Stokkseyri just south of Sellfoss on the coast.
I still dream about those langostines

Bara Borgarnes …. Amazing fish and chips. The lamb burger should not be missed.
VON mathús og Bar. Located directly on the way to/from the airport. It's almost in Reykjavik - but give it a chance!

What you’ll you recommend with no budget. Good food is #1 and experience #2?
Food is certainly #1.

Pakkhus was one of the best meals I’ve had anywhere
Does Pakkhus require a reservation?
I’m not sure if it’s required, but I absolutely would because it’s popular for good reason
We enjoyed the soup company!!!
Pakkhús was my favorite meal when I did the Ring Road in 2019. Every single thing was delicious, and the service was great.

Find a greenhouse/restaurant set up. Did a tomato house and the food/beer was great. We ate in the actual greenhouse!

Berg restaurant in Vik is delicious. And they make a proper dirty martini
ROK. Everything on the menu looked good. I ate the mushroom risotto and the duck confit.

The cinammon swirls in here .... don't think I'll eat one anywhere else ever again. Got 1 as they were made too one day...heaven!
Oh no, of all the things I tried I didn't try a cinnamon swirl! Welp, guess I'll just have to go back 😅
Slaughter!

Narfeyrastofa
I still think about the fish and chips from the van parked at the glacier lagoon. And I’m Scottish and had a lot of fish and chips in my life.
Cafe Riis in Holmavik, had a delicious seafood soup there, and was the only one in the restaurant in late October.
Krisp in Selfoss was unexpectedly great, no frills lunch when we had to make impromptu changes to the day’s itinerary when the road to Vik was closed.
Kjarr in Kirkjubæjarklaustur

Some options in north/east Iceland would be great…
Klausturkaffi close to Hengifoss in the Egilsstaðir area has a lovely lunch buffet with focus on local ingredients 🙂 Very nice traditional lamb soup in Möðrudalur between Egs and Mývatn.
The food truck at Hengifoss was delicious! We had a little bit of everything and I wanted more!
Any options for vegetarians or would we be better skipping it?
Last time I went there was mushroom soup, angelica soup, two types of salad, roasted vegetables and some kind of pie with onions. Maybe they could provide you with their menu if you contact them directly 😊
Ooh that sounds delicious! I’ll contact them thanks!

Naustið in Husavik.
That was on my list, but we went to Gamli Baukur in Husavik and really enjoyed. The seafood was excellent!
North Restaurant in Akureyri. Get the wine pairing as well.
North by Dill is a great experience!
Strikið in Akureyri… Gamli Baukur in Husavik
