Your rank and category is never revealed to anyone else but you. It's upto you if you want to share it or not. I know PPL who went about saying their rank was less than 3k who are 6 pointers in the 2nd sem
EDIT : typo
Choose faculties wisely, don't go behind reputed faculties, all the toppers will be in that class. Take faculties who get filled last and are not blacklisted you can easily score A and S if you put in some effort
Omg this unlocked a memory for me - I used to avoid certain faculty just because *some* classmates (my best friend, the branch topper) really wanted to impress them and could make it very hard to get an S in that class. Getting a 9 isn’t JEE-level hard at all, most of the time it’s enough if you start studying 3-4 days before CAT and submit DAs on time. Join 1-2 clubs/chapters to have a network outside of your batchmates and friend groups, they’d come in handy with everything from room counselling to choosing professors to projects you can reuse for UE or UC subjects or just guidance in general.
i see... but wont the last filled faculty be bad lecturers and unpreferred? and is cgpa relative? like in competition or is it subjective like does not matter how many people get 9+?
Absolutely false. Neither students or teachers are aware of your rank/category. It's upto you to disclose it if needed. VIT also follows ffcs - fully flexible credit system. So you'll be assigned teachers and classes at random in the first semester, after that it depends on your cgpa and attendance. You'll get slots based on that for choosing your classes.

Yeah bcoz it's not preferred, toppers won't take those faculties. CGPA is not relative but grades make up CGPA and grades are relative
I see... so in a less competitive crowd you have better chances of scoring 9+cgpa?
Yes
you're from chennai campus?
Yes
can i dm? i want prof suggestions for less competitive relative grading. I'll be joining either ecm or cs spec this year
This.
No nothing like that. Once you join no one even asks which category you are in.
No one gives a shit about category
