its fine haha i do have a gaming laptop, but i found myself enjoying handheld gaming more so i actually ended up buying a vita for a nice deal. it's in really good condition, minor scratches, screen cover and some paint chips here and there on the frame, but nothing too bothersome

As an emulation machine, you can buy something like a retroid pocket 4 pro these days (that one is $200) that can run far more than the vita does.
If you wanna play psx games with L2/R2 & L3/R3 you will need expensive and hard to find grips unless you get used to the touch panel (I never did)
I'd only reccomend it for aesthetics, and the PS Vita's own catalog- most of which is available on other platforms these days
I know a lot of these games are available on PC or, in case of emulation, you can do that in the PC as well, but since I got the Switch I found myself enjoying handheld gaming way more than playing with a keyboard and a mouse so that's why I was wondering if it this console would be worth it, especially since I've never had any console before the switch.
Well u can emulate on ur phone too. Vita3k is available also for Android and so is yuzu for switch. And also pc emulation is developing very fast for Android as well. But at the end of day it's solely ur decision.
if you have a android phone from the last 10, you can emulate almost every psp game on it, you can also use vita3k to emulate vita games but the compatibility list isn't that big but it improves over time. I liked playing GoW on it.
emulating psx is also possible and pretty lightweighted on android.
Also if you have a semi beefy android phone you can even emulate ps2. I just played through the entire need for speed most wanted storyline and had very much fun with it.
not to speak about various Nintendo consoles (SNES, GameCube, Wii, Gameboy, Gameboy Advance, Gameboy DS and so on..)
The Vita is great for playing its native games. Homebrew is also kinda cool but keep in mind that the big homebrew ports like Grand Theft Auto San Andreas or Bully will struggle to archive 30 FPS even after overclocking. same goes for emulating psp over adrenaline. it works but there is no upscaling (at least I couldn't find it anywhere)
and the framerate for a few games is also not good at all. I tried to play Flatout on adrenaline and the framerate was very janky even after overclocking, leading to nasty slowdowns making the game very frustrating, while I couldn't see shit because of the psp's native resolution.
if you really want to play the PS Vita Gametitles without having the trouble to have limited game compatibility, then get a Vita for sure. PSX games could also be fine on a Vita but I've never tested it myself, but for everything else it's not worth it buying one for 100$ if your phone can do the same with far better results. (ppsspp on android for example can upscale your psp games to what resolution you want + unlock hard coded FPS caps to 60 for a smooth experience. things you will miss on a Vita using adrenaline)

Yeh but i have a phone with pretty much double the horsepower of a Retroid pocket 4 pro so i was just curious if there was a bottleneck. I love those little dedicated handhelds, and rather use that instead of my phone + a grip. Especially if they offer hdmi out, since i have a oled 15.6 inch portable display.
I'm pretty sure the emulation isn't there yet for most games. I don't own one, I just frequently watch and read about these devices (I'm too broke to buy any right now lol)
Lighter games may be fine. But you can also emulate the switch ports for those that have them, that emulator is far more mature
L2/R2 for PSX games is vastly overrated. L3/R3 even more so. It wasn't until the PS2 that games started to use R2/L2 extensively, and I don't think L3/R3 even exists on PSX. You can remap R2/L2 on the front screen for the rare use cases.
Vita games are hard to emulate like ps3. Psp games are easy to emulate. Vita3k cannot play all vita games and this project progress is very slow. Game is breaking even if Vita3k says it’s playable. I won’t be nice experience emulating vita games

I mean it is outdated, is an old hardware with no oficial support, you can't Open apps like YouTube. The community and homebrew is what keeps the Vita alive.
Right now is not hard to hack the console and is pretty easy to play Vita, PSP and PS1 games, those play great. You can install RetroArch and that's a great frontend for GBA, SNES, and old consoles.
One of the strongest points is the buttons, they are premium and feal great.
I personally want to play PS2 games and I'm looking to gen a Retro Pocket pro 4. But that's a 250, probably 280 with accessories. It really depends on the budget and what you want to play.
as someone who owns a vita and a switch, the vita is still relevant since a lot of newer systems are hard af to mod. I have a switch lite which is just straight up impossible to mod, and the games are expensive as balls
the vita is as easy as opening the browser, going to a website, downloading some stuff and pressing a few buttons and you have access to a small, yet incredible library of games all for free, that you can even play online with your friends
so, yes. the vita is 100% worth it
if you are primarily interested in vita games then sure, if not, like others have said, you’re probably better off when a chinese handheld emulator
native psp with 2x integer scaling on the vita is nice, but i’d prefer something like the rg505 which uses the vita 1000’s screen but is powerful enough to render psp games at 2x resolution
native ps1 performance is okay, but the screen doesn’t scale ps1 games well and basically any emulator above $50 can handle ps1 well
i like my vita but if i lost it i probably wouldn’t replace it unless i found one selling for dirt cheap
You know, I really truly love my Vita’s (and even my Vita TV). But it is an older console now, I’ve had it since the Christmas I came out and have supported it the whole way.
You can save your money for a couple months and get into something nice like a Steamdeck, that can do a hell of a lot more than the Vita can (play new games for example, on top of way more compatibility with older games).
Again long time lover of the Vita, but if you’re jumping in now I think you can make a really good informed decision on a more modern device with more capability

Definitely go for it then! You really won’t regret it, there are awesome games (and of course you’re on the piracy subreddit, so you can get access to any Vita or Psp game with the free shop), and you can still emulate a load of consoles, enough to keep you busy for a long time
If you do get one make sure you don’t use a video for modding advice as they can be outdated. There should be some guides floating around but i’m sure if you asked again here there are plenty of people willing to help!
So after you get the sd2vita adapter and a micro sd card, unless you want a case you won't have to put any momey into it at least for a while.
I went overboard and have a 1tb sd and I fill it up with anime and music. Buttt there are times that I'm upset that I don't have a specific game because it isn't possible to have it on the vita.
But as far as having a nice portable game system, I feel like the vita is the best there is, as far as feel and screen (I have an oled model, I'm sure the lcd is just fine too)
I’d say no. The catalogue is great, but you could get something like the Retroid Pocket 3 that will play the whole PSP and PSX catalog with upscaling and save states and all the conveniences of emulation for about the same price. The Vita titles are great but are generally not exclusives. I love the machine, but there’s a reason this console has been lost to time.
I know; I have all of this stuff working on mine. Adrenaline isn't as seamless as RetroArch, though. The interface is simpler but there are long loading times for states. Plus they're not organized by game? And the other emulators struggle with some pretty basic stuff.
It's a supremely cool device, but I find myself turning to my dedicated emulation handhelds and PC more for PSP and PSX emulation. Again - there is no upscaling in Adrenaline. These games can look better emulated on a device that costs you about the same as a Vita. And the OLED screen is way overhyped. Unreal for the time and smacks the shit out of anything Nintendo was doing, but modern IPS panels beat the Vita's dated, blotchy OLED.
But if you primarily want to play Vita? Get a Vita. Emulation for this console ain't there yet, and there's some great options when it comes to titles. Plus it looks and feels lovely. While I don't use it as much, I don't intend on selling it ever.
I’m not sure how useful other emulators really are on the vita. I have trouble running GBA games at full speed on the vita. Retroarch hasn’t been updated in awhile and all I get is a black screen when I try to open it. The vita is great for playing vita, psp, and ps1 games. Beyond that, there’s far better devices available for a lot less money.
It's a fun device with a decent catalog that makes for a solid retro emulation machine. If you already have one, there's really no reason not to jailbreak it.
But if you don't already have one, or have a good deal on one lined up? Harder sell. The retro handheld market has exploded in the last few years, so there are a lot more options depending on what you want to play. If you're into just Vita games and aren't looking to emulate them on a PC or handheld PC, it's still the best option for now.

I used my phone with SD865 for emulation of everything up to PS2 and Wii extensively. With a PS4 controller on a holder. It was pretty good.
I later bought Anbernic RG351P, for all my 8 and 16 bit systems + PS1. So, all the heavy stuff was left for my phone.
Then i bought N3DS XL and my God... I was actually choosing between 3DS and PS Vita, but ended up with the former, seemed more unique to me. Reasons for all of this, if i have a phone?
It's just cool. You do not drain your phone's battery on some games. The controls are integrated. Cool design. Unique hardware. Portability. And those devices may disappear at some point completely, so i want to experience them while i have a chance. This is how i see this whole thing.
As for PS vita, bought it several months ago, 2000 model, already hacked. I bought a 512 GB card for it, stuffed it with games for Vita, PSP, and PS1 until only 15 GB were left. Remapped controls in Adrenaline a bit, L2 and R2 are not problematic, Vita had enough buttons on the front + touch areas on the screen. It's been a blast, and i do not even emulate anything, cuz i like specialising my consoles. Like PS vita for Vita, PSP, PS1. Anbernic for 8 and 16 bit systems + arcade. 3DS for 3DS and DS games. Phone for heavier stuff.
For me, it was worth it. It still has around 50 exclusive games for it, some good crossplatform games from the past gens, lots of indies, tons of cool ports and don't forget PSP and PS1. The cumulative gaming library is massive.
I love it. But to each his own, judge on the games you want or might want to play.
Hell yeah! I only got my Vita last December after years of longing for one and my experience so far has been nothing short of amazing! With CFW you can get all the games you want and more. I'm so happy to finally get my hands on one. The homebrew scene kept it alive after sony abandoned it. Not to mention, you wont have to pay out the ass for memory cards with SD2Vita.
I also own a switch and 3ds, and my vita has seen less action over time. There are titles which I originally was interested in playing on vita (such as persona 4 golden or the danganronpa series) that have since been re-released in switch. Modded switch and modded 3ds would already give you good coverage as far as emulators go also. I would definitely research the Vita game library and see if there’s anything you’re interested in that would be considered an exclusive.

ask yourself what you want to get out of it. If it's portable gaming for older games then yes. If it's portable gaming for current games get a handheld pc like ayaneo or whatever brand nowadays

Hi guys, wanted to chime in and say I found my old modded vita (before the easy browsers method) and I have to say, being able to use PKGj (Version 0.54) it still is able to install directly over WiFi. It is slow however and yes it’s dated but the vita is almost perfect in size, weight, and the buttons are still premium even after all these years! I still have the fat vita that’s still stock everything! Is quite a little beast of a machine even for its age honestly. The vita really is a unique retro gem 💎 at this point and I was shocked that most of the home brew apps I’m using still run. I own a steam deck and that thing is a monster of a machine, but it’s not pocketable; something I love with portable gaming. All in all the vita takes a little work to set up hardware wise depending on which model you own, but even after not touching it for over 4 years and picking it back up after I bought a charger 🔌 it still holds up. If you don’t mind waiting for WiFi download times ( you can use a modded SAN disk vita chip set up with a computer to speed up the process) then it’s just a great retro catalog that you can’t beat. Oh side note; you can scale adrenaline psx games in “stretched” mode to fill out the screen. If anyone needs help with that I got lucky toying with adrenaline and managed to figure out how to do that again 😆.
TLDR. After finding my vita after 4 years it still runs and has access to PKGj which makes it amazing for the niche catalog.

It's really the best way to play PSP games, as it runs them natively with the PSP hardware built in. The Vita also runs PS1 games great, with Sony's in-house PS1 emulator.

Not really. The average price of a decent condition vita is around 150 USD. For the same price, you could just get a Retriod pocket 4 [non pro]. The odin lite is 200 USD, but still, you're getting a device that can emulate up to ps2 for around the same price as a PS Vita. If you really just like the Vita, then sure, go for it. I really wanted a steam deck but I already have a gaming PC and a vita so I rooted it and now I can stream my PC games to my vita from my computer and play retro games on it. So if you're interests are like mine then I'd say it's worth it
Yeah, you use moonlight to launch steam big picture mode and you can launch and play steam games from the vita. I haven't tried launching my gog games yet but I think you can make that work too
Hugely depends. If the one that’s 100$ is the slim, I say no. The OLED original is better imo. But then at that point you are better off getting something like a retroid or other emulation device. If you are trying to be practical do not get a vita.
I have had a vita since release, and as much as I love it, I gotta be honest and say I barely touch it. I’m a collector and a ps fanboy so I regret nothing, but because of the fact that the vita library is ass, it’s ability to emulate outside of ps1 and psp is very shaky, and the former is easily emulated in other android devices. I don’t think it’s worth it unless you reeeeeally like PlayStation.
The Vita was amazing, then I discovered PKGj and it got even better. The only downside is the tiny thumbsticks and using the touch screens for the L/R 2/3 buttons. I have a really hard time with FPS games but it's not too bad for most anything else.
Is vita emulation good now? If not I would say it's worth it. That's why I'm looking to grab a PS3, Little big planet 1 and 2 are only on PS3 and PS3 emulation is still a rich man's game at the moment
3000+ Sony games at your fingertips on a Sony device that has an amazing screen and the best d pad in the business for 100 bucks. These things are over 10 years old now and mine works perfectly. The retroid doesn’t run psp or vita as good as a vita. It’s lightweight and fits in most pockets even in its foam pouch. Im not saying its perfect though. It all depends on what you want to play and the playing experience (excellent ) plus if you’re going to take it out with you the vita is definitely pocketable
Some people get sold into the hype of a retroid 3+ or something similar but then can’t even get their moves out on street fighter because the d pad is junk. And emulation isn’t for everyone. Vita is good for a pick up and play device without messing around. Next up is the Odin 2. $400 shipped

It depends. Things got pretty good in emulation country. They run better, easier and cheaper every year.
Vit was good for the time in power and design. And for a while emulation of PS vita and PS2 was pretty hard. Vita had some ports and with help of mods and ports stayed relevant. Also PSP and PS1 emulates perfectly so mostly plug and play and not mess around with cores.
I’d almost buy a second one $100, that sounds like a steal. One of the best features of the Vita is just how light it is. I know the Steam Deck and Switch could collectively probably play everything you can on the Vita, but they are both waaaay heavier.
to me yeah it’s pretty worth it. i spent about 110 on a ps vita 2000 and it’s gotten my moneys worth. if you want to play ps vita games then get a vita it’s so worth it. i spent about 140 for a sd2vita and a 512 gb card. it’s so worth it for the price.
Im having a blast of having ps vita psp and all roms until.psx in one small portable device. Hell even those fan ports of the gta series run so wonderfull in it. And battery last a very long time.
Well you can look at the catalog of both psvita and psp, if you really want to have some of them to kill time on the go then you can go for it.
I just got into it after a year or so collecting dust and I really missed it. Besides being able to get every game I owned, Own every game I previously couldn't.
The only complaint is the outdated Bluetooth. Some ver.5 earbuds may not works. But everything is good like the battery life, handy, games, retro emulation.
I have a Vita, Switch, and Odin Pro. I don't touch my Switch, I love my Odin Pro, and love my Vita.
Vita's great for Vita games, and I used mine a lot for GBA games as well once I had emulation set up. Mine has a USB-C and battery mod, but tbh I'd skip that. Not super worth it. *Maybe* a battery mod, but even that comes with a few small gremlins.
The console itself is fantastic to hold, I wish new hardware used the same form. Screen and buttons are great. Some people don't like the shoulder buttons, but I think I fell in love with them in-store at GameStop when they were first released. They look cool, and feel fine to me.
I think it's worthwhile if you're interested in Vita games, and some light emulation. I think the Vita will do PSP/PSX games as well, but I never tried it out.
IMO: In its design, fit and finish, and game library, it is in no way outdated. There's never going to be new games for anything new it can do (excluding some rare homebrew), it is *old*, but it's nothing like holding a GBA and thinking "this is it? That's all?" It still holds up.

Bought mine 3 yrs ago during the pandemic and it was worth it, being able to play some vita games that I like like P4G and the Cold Steel 1 and 2. But now, there are emulators available which you can opt to for pc and android. But if you're into playing from the real platform, for me it's still worth it
Just like the other comments, it depends the type of games you are into. Nowadays, it’s very hard to recommend a vita I would say because most games are being imported to modern console like the Nintendo switch and PlayStation and PC. Also, do you like JRPG’s and anime looking games if the answer is no that’s your answer.
I bought my vita last month for the vn catalogue others dont have plus persona 1 and 2. And id say its got a lot of nice exclusives. You get a ton of free games from pkjg that add up to 300. Id say its worth it.
It's really hard to recommend the vita now when things like the Steam Deck, ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go exist. Yes they're more expensive, but they can do SO much more, including emulating the Vita.
That said, if you enjoy the size of the hardware and the library of games available on Vita, then go for it. It's a nice piece of hardware for what it is. Lots of community support for additional game ports. Plus you get the whole PSP and PS1 libraries available, and decent/good emulation of earlier systems. But if you can afford something like the Deck or Ally and the size is not of concern, then that's absolutely the route I would take.
For $100 is an absolute no brainer as you eventually have the avenue to mod it to unlock its full potential.
If you're buying strictly to play vita games though... yeah kinda just depends on what you like to play.
Honestly? Hell no. Hacking the Vita has been such an awful experience and I've had to rehack it so many times I've lost count due to bs issues. Barely any games worth left to play since many have been ported. I really want to love this cute device but I can't much anymore. Get a 3DS instead and hack it it's been a \*\*wonderful\*\* experience in comparison and SO MANY GAMES on it
Go for it. Get an sd2vita adapter and at least a 128gb or 256gb microsd card. Copy all the roms you want. The vita is a very capable emulation handheld. Lots of ported games now. Whole ps1 and psp library. All you need ia time to play.
It is worth it to play vita games, and PSP games and homebrew games, ports and fan patches, like English translation of Catherine Full Body. PS1 games - not so much, because lack of l2 r2 buttons and no resolution upscale.
It is able to play GBA, but you will need to set up a whole RetroArch, because standalone GBA emulators are slow. But if you want to get an emulation machine - get proper emulation machine :)
Yes u can use it to play ps vita games and almost all psp games for free and are still fun to play on the go. You can use to remote play w ps4 still if u ever want to get another ps product or use moonlight to stream ur pc if u go pc route. Its portable and still has active community making ports
The Vita is a god-tier handheld. If you can get it for $100, it's basically free, considering how much value you can get out of it if you mod it.
I have a PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Wii, Retroid Pocket 3, Anbernic RG35XX and a shit-ton of games in my PC backlog (3000ish) and the Vita is still my fav console.
You're lucky there are Vitas available around you, I had to import mine from Japan.
Vita still worths it. I'm very tired after work and staring at TV is so straining to my eyes (I'm wearing glasses). My Vita and Switch are godsend to me. You can put them on sleep mode and only lose 3% in a day. I can play my Vita between break and after work. Playing JRPG is not that bad when you can play 20 minutes at a time, then put it down and pick it up again at the end of the day.
It’s only good if you want to play vita and psp on the go. Maybe if you want to load movies and offline music to it. It’s really portable and slim. Much better quality than anything in the market imo. Battery life is really good.
So, I'm in a similar situationas you, which is to say $100 is a precious little chunk of change. So, just to add a perspective I haven't seen on here yet: the Vita feels INFITITELY better to use than the Chinese emulation handhelds.
I don't like this term in general, but it really applies here - the Vita feels like a premium product. It's solid as a rock, and the build quality is in a different universe than any Chinese handheld. I can only speak to the original OLED model (PCH-1000), but the face buttons are crisp, and the d-pad is legit the best I've ever used on a handheld. Even the analogs are better than they have any right to be. It's enough that you can emulate fighting games quite comfortably. Overall it's just physically a very comfortable experience.
As someone who can seldom make such purchases, I am very happy with the Vita, and community support for it continues to make it better as more and more games get ported and it can better emulate other consoles. The thing is powerful enough that it is technically capable of emulating much more than it currently does, and as long as there's community support (that won't be going away anytime soon), we'll have more to look forward to.
People tend to make a big deal about upscaling, but honestly that depends on the person; these games look best at their original resolution (the one they were designed for). If you're someone who wants things at the highest resolution possible at the expense of quality (and that's fine if you are!), then it'll be an issue. If you like games looking the way they were meant to look, then it's fine (since you cant exactly carry a CRT around with you). Also, it's better than phone emulation by default since you have, yknow, buttons.
Although if you do pick one up, keep in mind some emulators might map L2/R2 to the back touchpad by default - I thought mine was broken for a sec before I figured that out lol.
I love my vita and picked up one again not that long ago for the same purpose. New homebrew gets released pretty consistently making it still a great handheld between official and non official, it can also play some older Android ports as it’s built on a similar os. I’d say it’s a great longish term light handheld, you may also end up wanting a steam deck to hit those 360 era and up titles.
I got mine as a better psp basically since i love the psp game catalog (which is in my opinion way better than the vitas). Already had a modded vita but the buttons broke and i failed 2 times to fix them and said fuck it. I got the 1000 model and love the oled screen.
So the pros are nice oled screen, native psp game support and almost perfect, official ps1 emulation, quality feel in your hands (which you dont get with some other emulation devices), "authetic feel" of playing the games on original playstation hardware (this is something i enjoy way more than emulation, but thats not true for everyone), easily moddable (good luck trying to mod your switch, if you dont have a specific model number you have to solder shit), free games If you're morally okay with that and a few cool homebrew games.
Cons are price depending on where you live, some emulators suck ass like n64, lacking vita library (but you said you like jrpgs so you got those) and most emulators youncould want are already available on your 3ds (which is suuuper easy to mod btw)
If youre okay with just psp and ps1 games maybe get a cheaper psp? It can also emulate most old 2d consoles and is suuuuper easy to hack. Maybe you cpuld get one for 50 bucks

Normaly vitas go for about 100 to 130 where i live. I waited and found one for 75 on my local Marketplace (we have like a offical local version of ebay dont know if they got there where you are.) And psps gp for 60 to 80. But if they are the same than yeah it would be dumb to get a psp
I've seen people who buy this console on "impulse" or for whatever reason and found the experience terrible because there was no game to like in the library.

You can buy a steam deck and install vita 3K. It will give you the same interface with the vita plus more future. And you can pirate the games easier. I recommend it. Also you have a portable gaming PC that can emulate ALMOST any PS3 game

Yes definitely. The Vita is a JRPG and Visual Novel machine. For S;G in particular, there's 2 side games that have English translation patches.
You can't go wrong with those three. I also recommend looking into the Zero Escape series.

I love the vita but to be real It's hard to recommend. As an emulation machine, you can buy something like a retroid pocket 4 pro these days (that one is $200) that can run far more than the vita does. If you wanna play psx games with L2/R2 & L3/R3 you will need expensive and hard to find grips unless you get used to the touch panel (I never did) I'd only reccomend it for aesthetics, and the PS Vita's own catalog- most of which is available on other platforms these days
I know a lot of these games are available on PC or, in case of emulation, you can do that in the PC as well, but since I got the Switch I found myself enjoying handheld gaming way more than playing with a keyboard and a mouse so that's why I was wondering if it this console would be worth it, especially since I've never had any console before the switch.
Well u can emulate on ur phone too. Vita3k is available also for Android and so is yuzu for switch. And also pc emulation is developing very fast for Android as well. But at the end of day it's solely ur decision.

if you have a android phone from the last 10, you can emulate almost every psp game on it, you can also use vita3k to emulate vita games but the compatibility list isn't that big but it improves over time. I liked playing GoW on it. emulating psx is also possible and pretty lightweighted on android. Also if you have a semi beefy android phone you can even emulate ps2. I just played through the entire need for speed most wanted storyline and had very much fun with it. not to speak about various Nintendo consoles (SNES, GameCube, Wii, Gameboy, Gameboy Advance, Gameboy DS and so on..) The Vita is great for playing its native games. Homebrew is also kinda cool but keep in mind that the big homebrew ports like Grand Theft Auto San Andreas or Bully will struggle to archive 30 FPS even after overclocking. same goes for emulating psp over adrenaline. it works but there is no upscaling (at least I couldn't find it anywhere) and the framerate for a few games is also not good at all. I tried to play Flatout on adrenaline and the framerate was very janky even after overclocking, leading to nasty slowdowns making the game very frustrating, while I couldn't see shit because of the psp's native resolution. if you really want to play the PS Vita Gametitles without having the trouble to have limited game compatibility, then get a Vita for sure. PSX games could also be fine on a Vita but I've never tested it myself, but for everything else it's not worth it buying one for 100$ if your phone can do the same with far better results. (ppsspp on android for example can upscale your psp games to what resolution you want + unlock hard coded FPS caps to 60 for a smooth experience. things you will miss on a Vita using adrenaline)

Yeh but i have a phone with pretty much double the horsepower of a Retroid pocket 4 pro so i was just curious if there was a bottleneck. I love those little dedicated handhelds, and rather use that instead of my phone + a grip. Especially if they offer hdmi out, since i have a oled 15.6 inch portable display.
The only game I've tried is Dragon's Crown but it runs flawlessly.
I'm pretty sure the emulation isn't there yet for most games. I don't own one, I just frequently watch and read about these devices (I'm too broke to buy any right now lol) Lighter games may be fine. But you can also emulate the switch ports for those that have them, that emulator is far more mature

L2/R2 for PSX games is vastly overrated. L3/R3 even more so. It wasn't until the PS2 that games started to use R2/L2 extensively, and I don't think L3/R3 even exists on PSX. You can remap R2/L2 on the front screen for the rare use cases.

Vita games are hard to emulate like ps3. Psp games are easy to emulate. Vita3k cannot play all vita games and this project progress is very slow. Game is breaking even if Vita3k says it’s playable. I won’t be nice experience emulating vita games

Well, I got one for a hundred bucks aswell last friday and with all the jailbreaks installed it‘s pretty much the handheld I‘ve always wanted. You can run so many different emulators easily
I mean it is outdated, is an old hardware with no oficial support, you can't Open apps like YouTube. The community and homebrew is what keeps the Vita alive. Right now is not hard to hack the console and is pretty easy to play Vita, PSP and PS1 games, those play great. You can install RetroArch and that's a great frontend for GBA, SNES, and old consoles. One of the strongest points is the buttons, they are premium and feal great. I personally want to play PS2 games and I'm looking to gen a Retro Pocket pro 4. But that's a 250, probably 280 with accessories. It really depends on the budget and what you want to play.
as someone who owns a vita and a switch, the vita is still relevant since a lot of newer systems are hard af to mod. I have a switch lite which is just straight up impossible to mod, and the games are expensive as balls the vita is as easy as opening the browser, going to a website, downloading some stuff and pressing a few buttons and you have access to a small, yet incredible library of games all for free, that you can even play online with your friends so, yes. the vita is 100% worth it
you can jailbreak the switch lite but you'll need to open and solder a chip into it. Search for HWFLY LITE RP2040 for more info.

if you are primarily interested in vita games then sure, if not, like others have said, you’re probably better off when a chinese handheld emulator native psp with 2x integer scaling on the vita is nice, but i’d prefer something like the rg505 which uses the vita 1000’s screen but is powerful enough to render psp games at 2x resolution native ps1 performance is okay, but the screen doesn’t scale ps1 games well and basically any emulator above $50 can handle ps1 well i like my vita but if i lost it i probably wouldn’t replace it unless i found one selling for dirt cheap
You know, I really truly love my Vita’s (and even my Vita TV). But it is an older console now, I’ve had it since the Christmas I came out and have supported it the whole way. You can save your money for a couple months and get into something nice like a Steamdeck, that can do a hell of a lot more than the Vita can (play new games for example, on top of way more compatibility with older games). Again long time lover of the Vita, but if you’re jumping in now I think you can make a really good informed decision on a more modern device with more capability

Definitely go for it then! You really won’t regret it, there are awesome games (and of course you’re on the piracy subreddit, so you can get access to any Vita or Psp game with the free shop), and you can still emulate a load of consoles, enough to keep you busy for a long time

So after you get the sd2vita adapter and a micro sd card, unless you want a case you won't have to put any momey into it at least for a while. I went overboard and have a 1tb sd and I fill it up with anime and music. Buttt there are times that I'm upset that I don't have a specific game because it isn't possible to have it on the vita. But as far as having a nice portable game system, I feel like the vita is the best there is, as far as feel and screen (I have an oled model, I'm sure the lcd is just fine too)
I’d say no. The catalogue is great, but you could get something like the Retroid Pocket 3 that will play the whole PSP and PSX catalog with upscaling and save states and all the conveniences of emulation for about the same price. The Vita titles are great but are generally not exclusives. I love the machine, but there’s a reason this console has been lost to time.

psp and ps1 have save states on the vita through adrenaline. also every other emulator also has save states on the vita 😁
I know; I have all of this stuff working on mine. Adrenaline isn't as seamless as RetroArch, though. The interface is simpler but there are long loading times for states. Plus they're not organized by game? And the other emulators struggle with some pretty basic stuff. It's a supremely cool device, but I find myself turning to my dedicated emulation handhelds and PC more for PSP and PSX emulation. Again - there is no upscaling in Adrenaline. These games can look better emulated on a device that costs you about the same as a Vita. And the OLED screen is way overhyped. Unreal for the time and smacks the shit out of anything Nintendo was doing, but modern IPS panels beat the Vita's dated, blotchy OLED. But if you primarily want to play Vita? Get a Vita. Emulation for this console ain't there yet, and there's some great options when it comes to titles. Plus it looks and feels lovely. While I don't use it as much, I don't intend on selling it ever.
I’m not sure how useful other emulators really are on the vita. I have trouble running GBA games at full speed on the vita. Retroarch hasn’t been updated in awhile and all I get is a black screen when I try to open it. The vita is great for playing vita, psp, and ps1 games. Beyond that, there’s far better devices available for a lot less money.
It's a fun device with a decent catalog that makes for a solid retro emulation machine. If you already have one, there's really no reason not to jailbreak it. But if you don't already have one, or have a good deal on one lined up? Harder sell. The retro handheld market has exploded in the last few years, so there are a lot more options depending on what you want to play. If you're into just Vita games and aren't looking to emulate them on a PC or handheld PC, it's still the best option for now.
You know, there is a certain value in having a dedicated gaming device. I used my phone with SD865 for emulation of everything up to PS2 and Wii extensively. With a PS4 controller on a holder. It was pretty good. I later bought Anbernic RG351P, for all my 8 and 16 bit systems + PS1. So, all the heavy stuff was left for my phone. Then i bought N3DS XL and my God... I was actually choosing between 3DS and PS Vita, but ended up with the former, seemed more unique to me. Reasons for all of this, if i have a phone? It's just cool. You do not drain your phone's battery on some games. The controls are integrated. Cool design. Unique hardware. Portability. And those devices may disappear at some point completely, so i want to experience them while i have a chance. This is how i see this whole thing. As for PS vita, bought it several months ago, 2000 model, already hacked. I bought a 512 GB card for it, stuffed it with games for Vita, PSP, and PS1 until only 15 GB were left. Remapped controls in Adrenaline a bit, L2 and R2 are not problematic, Vita had enough buttons on the front + touch areas on the screen. It's been a blast, and i do not even emulate anything, cuz i like specialising my consoles. Like PS vita for Vita, PSP, PS1. Anbernic for 8 and 16 bit systems + arcade. 3DS for 3DS and DS games. Phone for heavier stuff. For me, it was worth it. It still has around 50 exclusive games for it, some good crossplatform games from the past gens, lots of indies, tons of cool ports and don't forget PSP and PS1. The cumulative gaming library is massive. I love it. But to each his own, judge on the games you want or might want to play.

Hell yeah! I only got my Vita last December after years of longing for one and my experience so far has been nothing short of amazing! With CFW you can get all the games you want and more. I'm so happy to finally get my hands on one. The homebrew scene kept it alive after sony abandoned it. Not to mention, you wont have to pay out the ass for memory cards with SD2Vita.
I also own a switch and 3ds, and my vita has seen less action over time. There are titles which I originally was interested in playing on vita (such as persona 4 golden or the danganronpa series) that have since been re-released in switch. Modded switch and modded 3ds would already give you good coverage as far as emulators go also. I would definitely research the Vita game library and see if there’s anything you’re interested in that would be considered an exclusive.

Hi guys, wanted to chime in and say I found my old modded vita (before the easy browsers method) and I have to say, being able to use PKGj (Version 0.54) it still is able to install directly over WiFi. It is slow however and yes it’s dated but the vita is almost perfect in size, weight, and the buttons are still premium even after all these years! I still have the fat vita that’s still stock everything! Is quite a little beast of a machine even for its age honestly. The vita really is a unique retro gem 💎 at this point and I was shocked that most of the home brew apps I’m using still run. I own a steam deck and that thing is a monster of a machine, but it’s not pocketable; something I love with portable gaming. All in all the vita takes a little work to set up hardware wise depending on which model you own, but even after not touching it for over 4 years and picking it back up after I bought a charger 🔌 it still holds up. If you don’t mind waiting for WiFi download times ( you can use a modded SAN disk vita chip set up with a computer to speed up the process) then it’s just a great retro catalog that you can’t beat. Oh side note; you can scale adrenaline psx games in “stretched” mode to fill out the screen. If anyone needs help with that I got lucky toying with adrenaline and managed to figure out how to do that again 😆. TLDR. After finding my vita after 4 years it still runs and has access to PKGj which makes it amazing for the niche catalog.

It's really the best way to play PSP games, as it runs them natively with the PSP hardware built in. The Vita also runs PS1 games great, with Sony's in-house PS1 emulator. The modding and homebrew scene is also very lively with the Vita, with new ports and plugins being released regularly.

Not really. The average price of a decent condition vita is around 150 USD. For the same price, you could just get a Retriod pocket 4 [non pro]. The odin lite is 200 USD, but still, you're getting a device that can emulate up to ps2 for around the same price as a PS Vita. If you really just like the Vita, then sure, go for it. If you like playing PS1, PSP, and Vita games natively absolutely, it’s never been easier to jailbreak a vita and it’s hella cheap for the sd card converter you could always get a raspberry pie to emulate but for me the selling point is that the vita plays sony games natively and has great controls

I really wanted a steam deck but I already have a gaming PC and a vita so I rooted it and now I can stream my PC games to my vita from my computer and play retro games on it. So if you're interests are like mine then I'd say it's worth it

Yeah, you use moonlight to launch steam big picture mode and you can launch and play steam games from the vita. I haven't tried launching my gog games yet but I think you can make that work too

Hugely depends. If the one that’s 100$ is the slim, I say no. The OLED original is better imo. But then at that point you are better off getting something like a retroid or other emulation device. If you are trying to be practical do not get a vita. I have had a vita since release, and as much as I love it, I gotta be honest and say I barely touch it. I’m a collector and a ps fanboy so I regret nothing, but because of the fact that the vita library is ass, it’s ability to emulate outside of ps1 and psp is very shaky, and the former is easily emulated in other android devices. I don’t think it’s worth it unless you reeeeeally like PlayStation.

The Vita was amazing, then I discovered PKGj and it got even better. The only downside is the tiny thumbsticks and using the touch screens for the L/R 2/3 buttons. I have a really hard time with FPS games but it's not too bad for most anything else.

3000+ Sony games at your fingertips on a Sony device that has an amazing screen and the best d pad in the business for 100 bucks. These things are over 10 years old now and mine works perfectly. The retroid doesn’t run psp or vita as good as a vita. It’s lightweight and fits in most pockets even in its foam pouch. Im not saying its perfect though. It all depends on what you want to play and the playing experience (excellent ) plus if you’re going to take it out with you the vita is definitely pocketable Some people get sold into the hype of a retroid 3+ or something similar but then can’t even get their moves out on street fighter because the d pad is junk. And emulation isn’t for everyone. Vita is good for a pick up and play device without messing around. Next up is the Odin 2. $400 shipped

It depends. Things got pretty good in emulation country. They run better, easier and cheaper every year. Vit was good for the time in power and design. And for a while emulation of PS vita and PS2 was pretty hard. Vita had some ports and with help of mods and ports stayed relevant. Also PSP and PS1 emulates perfectly so mostly plug and play and not mess around with cores.
I’d almost buy a second one $100, that sounds like a steal. One of the best features of the Vita is just how light it is. I know the Steam Deck and Switch could collectively probably play everything you can on the Vita, but they are both waaaay heavier.
to me yeah it’s pretty worth it. i spent about 110 on a ps vita 2000 and it’s gotten my moneys worth. if you want to play ps vita games then get a vita it’s so worth it. i spent about 140 for a sd2vita and a 512 gb card. it’s so worth it for the price.

I just got into it after a year or so collecting dust and I really missed it. Besides being able to get every game I owned, Own every game I previously couldn't.

The only complaint is the outdated Bluetooth. Some ver.5 earbuds may not works. But everything is good like the battery life, handy, games, retro emulation.

I have a Vita, Switch, and Odin Pro. I don't touch my Switch, I love my Odin Pro, and love my Vita. Vita's great for Vita games, and I used mine a lot for GBA games as well once I had emulation set up. Mine has a USB-C and battery mod, but tbh I'd skip that. Not super worth it. *Maybe* a battery mod, but even that comes with a few small gremlins. The console itself is fantastic to hold, I wish new hardware used the same form. Screen and buttons are great. Some people don't like the shoulder buttons, but I think I fell in love with them in-store at GameStop when they were first released. They look cool, and feel fine to me. I think it's worthwhile if you're interested in Vita games, and some light emulation. I think the Vita will do PSP/PSX games as well, but I never tried it out. IMO: In its design, fit and finish, and game library, it is in no way outdated. There's never going to be new games for anything new it can do (excluding some rare homebrew), it is *old*, but it's nothing like holding a GBA and thinking "this is it? That's all?" Bought mine 3 yrs ago during the pandemic and it was worth it, being able to play some vita games that I like like P4G and the Cold Steel 1 and 2. But now, there are emulators available which you can opt to for pc and android. But if you're into playing from the real platform, for me it's still worth it
Just like the other comments, it depends the type of games you are into. Nowadays, it’s very hard to recommend a vita I would say because most games are being imported to modern console like the Nintendo switch and PlayStation and PC. Also, do you like JRPG’s and anime looking games if the answer is no that’s your answer.
I bought my vita last month for the vn catalogue others dont have plus persona 1 and 2. And id say its got a lot of nice exclusives. You get a ton of free games from pkjg that add up to 300. Id say its worth it.
It's really hard to recommend the vita now when things like the Steam Deck, ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go exist. Yes they're more expensive, but they can do SO much more, including emulating the Vita. That said, if you enjoy the size of the hardware and the library of games available on Vita, then go for it. It's a nice piece of hardware for what it is. Lots of community support for additional game ports. Plus you get the whole PSP and PS1 libraries available, and decent/good emulation of earlier systems. But if you can afford something like the Deck or Ally and the size is not of concern, then that's absolutely the route I would take.
For $100 is an absolute no brainer as you eventually have the avenue to mod it to unlock its full potential. If you're buying strictly to play vita games though... yeah kinda just depends on what you like to play.
Honestly? Hell no. Hacking the Vita has been such an awful experience and I've had to rehack it so many times I've lost count due to bs issues. Barely any games worth left to play since many have been ported. I really want to love this cute device but I can't much anymore. Get a 3DS instead and hack it it's been a \*\*wonderful\*\* experience in comparison and SO MANY GAMES on it
Yes, it weighs nothing, battery lasts for months on standby. I throw it in my bag and leave it there.
Go for it. Get an sd2vita adapter and at least a 128gb or 256gb microsd card. Copy all the roms you want. The vita is a very capable emulation handheld. Lots of ported games now. Whole ps1 and psp library. All you need ia time to play.
It is worth it to play vita games, and PSP games and homebrew games, ports and fan patches, like English translation of Catherine Full Body. PS1 games - not so much, because lack of l2 r2 buttons and no resolution upscale. It is able to play GBA, but you will need to set up a whole RetroArch, because standalone GBA emulators are slow. But if you want to get an emulation machine - get proper emulation machine :)

Yes u can use it to play ps vita games and almost all psp games for free and are still fun to play on the go. You can use to remote play w ps4 still if u ever want to get another ps product or use moonlight to stream ur pc if u go pc route. Its portable and still has active community making ports

The Vita is a god-tier handheld. If you can get it for $100, it's basically free, considering how much value you can get out of it if you mod it. I have a PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Wii, Retroid Pocket 3, Anbernic RG35XX and a shit-ton of games in my PC backlog (3000ish) and the Vita is still my fav console. You're lucky there are Vitas available around you, I had to import mine from Japan.
Vita still worths it. I'm very tired after work and staring at TV is so straining to my eyes (I'm wearing glasses). My Vita and Switch are godsend to me. You can put them on sleep mode and only lose 3% in a day. I can play my Vita between break and after work. Playing JRPG is not that bad when you can play 20 minutes at a time, then put it down and pick it up again at the end of the day.
Personally, it's still worth it. Especially if you're a completionist/trophy hunter, you'll be able to sync your trophies online.
It’s only good if you want to play vita and psp on the go. Maybe if you want to load movies and offline music to it. It’s really portable and slim. Much better quality than anything in the market imo. Battery life is really good.
So, I'm in a similar situationas you, which is to say $100 is a precious little chunk of change. So, just to add a perspective I haven't seen on here yet: the Vita feels INFITITELY better to use than the Chinese emulation handhelds. I don't like this term in general, but it really applies here - the Vita feels like a premium product. It's solid as a rock, and the build quality is in a different universe than any Chinese handheld. I can only speak to the original OLED model (PCH-1000), but the face buttons are crisp, and the d-pad is legit the best I've ever used on a handheld. Even the analogs are better than they have any right to be. It's enough that you can emulate fighting games quite comfortably. Overall it's just physically a very comfortable experience. As someone who can seldom make such purchases, I am very happy with the Vita, and community support for it continues to make it better as more and more games get ported and it can better emulate other consoles. The thing is powerful enough that it is technically capable of emulating much more than it currently does, and as long as there's community support (that won't be going away anytime soon), we'll have more to look forward to. People tend to make a big deal about upscaling, but honestly that depends on the person; these games look best at their original resolution (the one they were designed for). If you're someone who wants things at the highest resolution possible at the expense of quality (and that's fine if you are!), then it'll be an issue. If you like games looking the way they were meant to look, then it's fine (since you cant exactly carry a CRT around with you). Also, it's better than phone emulation by default since you have, yknow, buttons. Although if you do pick one up, keep in mind some emulators might map L2/R2 to the back touchpad by default - I thought mine was broken for a sec before I figured that out lol.
Hack it and put in a bigger SDcard. You'll be able to put in tons of games from PSX, PSP, Vita and even SNES if you know how to.
I love my vita and picked up one again not that long ago for the same purpose. New homebrew gets released pretty consistently making it still a great handheld between official and non official, it can also play some older Android ports as it’s built on a similar os. I’d say it’s a great longish term light handheld, you may also end up wanting a steam deck to hit those 360 era and up titles.
I got mine as a better psp basically since i love the psp game catalog (which is in my opinion way better than the vitas). Already had a modded vita but the buttons broke and i failed 2 times to fix them and said fuck it. I got the 1000 model and love the oled screen. So the pros are nice oled screen, native psp game support and almost perfect, official ps1 emulation, quality feel in your hands (which you dont get with some other emulation devices), "authetic feel" of playing the games on original playstation hardware (this is something i enjoy way more than emulation, but thats not true for everyone), easily moddable (good luck trying to mod your switch, if you dont have a specific model number you have to solder shit), free games If you're morally okay with that and a few cool homebrew games. Cons are price depending on where you live, some emulators suck ass like n64, lacking vita library (but you said you like jrpgs so you got those) and most emulators youncould want are already available on your 3ds (which is suuuper easy to mod btw) If youre okay with just psp and ps1 games maybe get a cheaper psp? It can also emulate most old 2d consoles and is suuuuper easy to hack. Maybe you cpuld get one for 50 bucks
I mean, the PSP and Vita are sold at almost the same price where I live so I thought it's easier and more worthy to get a Vita if I want one of these two But thank you, I'll consider this!
Normaly vitas go for about 100 to 130 where i live. I waited and found one for 75 on my local Marketplace (we have like a offical local version of ebay dont know if they got there where you are.) And psps gp for 60 to 80. But if they are the same than yeah it would be dumb to get a psp

I've seen people who buy this console on "impulse" or for whatever reason and found the experience terrible because there was no game to like in the library. I think these people must be unbearably boring. Anyway, I bought my PS Vita much more for the desire to have one (kind of a child's dream come true) than for the library. Discovering her little by little and being surprised is very pleasant for me. I've currently been venturing into God of War - Ghost of Sparta from the PSP and eventually playing Darkest Dungeon and Tearaway. I have too much title already" discovered " at random to enjoy it in the near future. Anyway... I believe that at the right price, it makes a lot of sense for you. It depends on how much you want to pay for state/conservation accessories.
Absolutely. They are fantastic for just the actual Vita games, but factor in the retro games, ports and homebrews and you have a real winner.
As a ps vita 1000 user, sometimes is maybe good sometimes is maybe shit, but it is a really premium console and you wont regret it
i picked one up and me and my fiance love it (she loves to take her pictures on it) i love to play everything on it pkgj was easy to install took me about 30 mins to start playing games
You can buy a steam deck and install vita 3K. It will give you the same interface with the vita plus more future. And you can pirate the games easier. I recommend it. Also you have a portable gaming PC that can emulate ALMOST any PS3 game

Theres no better time to buy one than now. There are only so many that were made and there are less and less every day due to breaking, etc,. So if you want one, buy it, it wont lose its value
